On May 22, Adairville School welcomed Dr. Wayne Lewis Jr., the Kentucky Commissioner of Education, and Gary Houchens, a state board member. Also, in attendance were Superintendent Paul Mullins, Logan County Chief Academic Officer,Contessa Orr, and two Logan County Board members, Johnny Dawson and Kenny Robertson.

During this visit, students and staff at Adairville School were able to showcase the great things happening at their school.

Mrs. Corum’s class started the day by providing each of our visitors with coffee and refreshments through their Coffee Shop. Then, Ridge Holman and Sophia Corbin presented their Kindness Project that they developed in Mrs. Cindy Beason’s 5th grade Language Arts class. The students had read the book Wonder by R. J. Palacio, and it inspired them to spread more kindness at Adairville School and in the Adairville community. During their presentation, Ridge and Sophia shared their class Kindness Instagram page, and they talked about different Kindness activities they had completed throughout the school year.

Adairville staff also informed their visitors about several exciting initiatives, such as their career academies for middle school students, personalized learning plans for all Kindergarten-8th grade students, and their goals to increase experience-based learning for all students. After learning about Adairville’s vision and long-term goals, Dr. Lewis visited several classrooms.

In Mrs. Kristine Potter’s Kindergarten class, students were engaged in a variety of activities. Some students were on their iPads on Lexia, an interactive Reading program. Others were reading books about dinosaurs, and another group was with Mrs. Potter practicing reading aloud. Our next stop was Mrs. Tara Cox’s class, and they were doing Camp Out Reading. Mrs. Cox had a tent and “fire” pit set up for students to read and relax.

Next, we visited our 5th grade teachers, Mrs. Heather Mowles and Mrs. Beason. They were collaborating with Mrs. Kerry Holloman to help our students learn about the history of Adairville. Each year, our 5th grade students go on a walking tour to learn about Adairville’s past, and during Dr. Lewis’ visit, our students were using interactive google maps to learn more about Adairville’s history before going on the walking tour.

Mrs. Carrie Shanklin’s 3rd grade class was highly involved in a variety of STEM activities. Within this classroom visit, Dr. Lewis was able to observe our students effectively communicating, collaborating, and problem-solving.

Our final classroom visit was to our middle school Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Lori Bouldin. In this class, students were using technology to create videos and feature articles to present to our 5th grade students to help with transitioning from elementary to middle school. 

We ended our visit with Dr. Lewis, Dr. Houchens, Mr. Mullins, and Mrs. Orr playing an Academic Team match against Eva Bouldin, Elijah Corbin, Taylor Corbin and Sam Duncan, some of Adairville School’s Academic Team students. These students were able to showcase their in-depth content knowledge and problem-solving skills.

We also had the privilege to take our 8th grade Lighthouse Leader students to hear the commissioner speak to our community about the future of education in Kentucky.

After the visit, Dr. Lewis was very complimentary of Adairville School, telling Principal Kristina Rice that Adairville School has a lot to be proud of and that many great things are happening at Adairville School.
