Williams-Farmer to campaign in Logan County
The Republican nominees for governor and lieutenant governor, Senate President David Williams and Commissioner of Agriculture Richie Farmer, will be in Russellville Monday. They will be available to meet with voters at Republican Headquarters on the Carrico Park Square at 11 a.m. and then will greet diners at Roy’s Bar-B-Q, beginning at noon.

WRUS' Stuff the Bus continues at Wal-Mart Saturday
Stuff the Bus, which is organized by WRUS radio, continues and concludes today at the Russellville Wal-Mart. from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Donated items and items which have been purchased from donated funds will go to needy children in both school systems. For convenience, items can also be dropped off at Mighty Dollar, Family Dollar, Chamber of Commerce and Walgreen's in Russellville, plus, Dollar General in Lewisburg, Adairville & Russellville.

RHS girls softball team to meet with new coach
A meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday for any girls interested in playing softball for Russellville High School or Middle School. Any-one with questions can call new head coach Greg Meacham at 847-2481.

Victor Shifflett named Russellville Police Chief
Captain Victor Shifflett has been chosen as Russellville's new chief of police, according to WRUS News. Shifflett will begin his duties Monday upon the retirement of Chief Barry Dill. Shifflett,
a Russellville native, has been with the department since 1993.
He has been married since 1994 to the former Tracey Wood, a graduate of Logan County High School & a Todd County educator.

Koller 2nd overall, top am in state Women's Open
Russellville High School grad Nikki Koller, who was state champ as a Lady Panther, finished 2nd overall and was top amateur in the Kentucky Women's Open golf tournament Wednesday. She fired an eagle on #17 of Standard Country Club to tie professional golfer Taryn Durham of Glasgow for the lead, but Durham followed with an eagle herself, Both parred number 18 and Durham won by two strokes by playing even par for the 36 holes. Koller, Durham and Hebron's Martha Leach had all shot 73s on Tuesday to tie for medalist. Durham had also won the Tennessee Open a few days earlier. Koller plays golf for the University of Arizona.

Faith & Family Coalition to have guest speaker
Tara McGuire , youth program advisor for MADD, will speak at a gathering Thursday of those interested in reducing the use of alcohol and drugs by teens in Russellville and Logan County as part of the Faith & Family Coalition. The gathering will be held at Russellville High School from 7-9 p.m. following the Russellville Junior/ Senior High School Open House. The Faith & Family Coalition is active throughout the year in the county through the leadership of Berea Christian Church and the sponsorship of First Southern National Bank. Anyone interested in working on projects to steer youngsters away from harmful substances in urged to attend.

First Southern collecting supplies for local students
First Southern National Bank branches across the state are gearing up for the coming school year by inviting customers & com-munity members to join employees in giving school supplies and words of encouragement to local teachers and students. First Southern’s Giving Tree initiative encourages bank customers, employees and community members to donate much needed school supplies and write short notes of encouragement to local school teachers and staff, all of which will be delivered to local schools at the end of August.
The bank is collecting supplies for elementary, middle and high schools in both local school systems - Logan County Schools and Russellville schools. Customers and community members are invi- ted to pick up supply wish lists and drop off donations at local First Southern branches in Russellville at 138 North Main Street &104 South Bethel Street. AARP Driver Safety Program at Crittenden Drive
An AARP- Sponsored Driver Safety Program will be held Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Crittenden Drive Church of Christ off the Clarksville Road in Russellville. The four-hour course is designed to meet the needs of drivers over 50 and covers age related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, rules of the road, and local driving problems, but there will be no test. Insurance companies in Kentucky are required to provide a premium discount to graduates of the course. Cost of the program is $12 per person for AARP members who have a member card and $14 for non-members. Also, all retied educators will be able to take the course free with voucher from the NTRA (log onto NTRA website and print voucher, also voucher can be copied). ACE program to be used at R'ville alternative school
Russellville is implementing a revamped alternative school program, called ACE, which stands for Alternative Center for Education. The acronym indicates the focus of the program, which in-cludes Academics, Character, and Effort. The program, which is multi-leveled and proactive in approach, will stress teaching replacement behaviors and student transitioning to a regular class-room. Through establishing a structured environment with many incentives, students will be guided through a multi-tiered process. Students will be closely monitored in an environment of positive rewards, mentoring, behavior modification & developing a trusting relationship with the ACE teacher, Lisa White will lead the new program, which starts this school year. She told the school board at its July meeting that she has been working to develop the pro-gram and is very enthusiastic about its implementation.

Birthday gala for Mrs. Carpenter, Mrs. Hadden Sunday
On Sunday, July 24 from 2-4 p.m. at the Auburn Museum a party will be held celebrating the birthdays of two Auburn ladies born 10 days apart who have been friends for over 60 years. They're Eloise Hadden and Elsie Carpenter. Their party will be a fund raiser for the Auburn Museum. Gifts should be donations to the museum of an amount with 80 in it, 80 cents, $8 or $80 or anything else in between. Anyone else born in 1931 is welcome to be honored at the party as well. Attendees see all the collections at the muse-um, the old Auburn Jail, Greenwood School House, the old barn, and now a new addition, a log cabin on the grounds. Old timey refreshments will be served: lemonade and cookies.

Junior Pro, Pee Wee Football registration, combine today
Registration for Junior Pro and Poe Wee Football will be held at the Russellville Recreation Center today, July 23, and next Saturday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and July 26 and 28 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Players must be present for equipment fitting. A $45 dollar fee per player will be charged plus parents or guardians are also required to sell $20 worth of raffle tickets or must pay the additional $20. Player evaluations are also being held today at Rhea Stadium from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. A second one will be held at the same times next Saturday at the Logan County High School field. Pee Wee football is for third and fourth graders and junior pro for fifth and sixth graders.

RHS soccer practice underway each evening
Russellville High School soccer practice is being held each day at 7 p.m. for any boy or girl who wishes to play soccer in grades 5-12. Students must have a completed physical examination. For more information, call Coach Nathan Thompson at 270-893-1831.

Logan County Fair Quilt Show
The Logan County Fair concludes Saturday at the UK Ag Complex with the Quilt Show and Bake Sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. In the Extenstion Office along with a Craft & Flea Market. The charge for a 10X20 outside booth is $15. The Farmers' Market will have is regular 8 a.m.-noon Saturday session in the pavilion at the rear of the complex.

McPherson plans to resign from R'ville Council
Russellville City Councilman Lanny McPherson is resigning his office as of Aug. 2, WRUS News reports. McPherson, who is in his 4th term, served as interim mayor last year after the resignation of Mayor Gene Zick. McPherson said he is going to work in the Electric Plant Board's new fibre optics program and wants to avoid a conflict of interest. City Attorney Neil Kerr said the council will select McPherson's interim replacement.

Masons part of national basketball championship
A father-daughter combination from Logan County helped their team win a national basketball championship this weekend in Clarksville. Lonnie Mason, a former multi-sport standout at LCHS who has been part of several coaching staffs at his alma mater, is the assistant coach of the Kentucky Blast 12-and-under AAU girls’ basketball team. His daughter, Olmstead's Taleia Mason,is a player on the team, which won the seventh-grade Division II national championship .Under head coach Cornelius Faulkner, rhe Blast beat the Ponchatoula Hurricanes 52-49 in the finals. They won 43-34 over the North Georgia Heat, 62-29 over Shining Stars-Schwartz in the quarterfinals and 56-29 in the first round over the Missouri Rockets. The Blast also went 3-0 in pool play.

Republican Women to honor essay winners
The Logan County Republican Women's Club will welcome the winners of its "What America Means to Me" essay contest to its meeting Tuesday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The 1st place winner is Madison Alvis, 2nd Chase Williamson, and 3rd Jarred Long, all 8th graders from Olmstead School, and Sam Cundiff, who tied for 3rd, is a 6th grader from Stevenson Elementary. Auburn Fall Ball signups offered next week
Auburn Fall Ball Machine Pitch and Kid Pitch 9-10 and 11-12 sign-ups will be held Tuesday, July 26, and Thursday, July 28, from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Machine Pitch Field at Auburn Park. Machine Pitch is for those who will be 8 and under as of May 1, 2012. Kid Pitch is for those who will be 12 and under next summer. The registration fee is $35. Morris, Ben Slack lead SKY swimmers at state
Lilly Morris , a student at Olmstead Elementary School, led the way for SKY Swimming Friday at the Ken-tucky 8 & Under State Championships. She earned high point honors by winning four individual events (200 IM, 50 back, 50 fly, 100 free). On the boys side, Stevenson Elementary School student Ben Slack finished in 2nd place in the 200 IM and 50 Fly, 3rd in the 100 free, and 5th in the 50 free. Conner Kingery of Glasgow placed 5th in the 50 breast, 11th in 100 free, 13th in 50 back, and 17th in the 50 Free. Southern Kentucky Swim Club is headed by former Russellville coach Dee Wilkins.

Warren County wins Babe Ruth games over Logan
Warren County teams won games over host Logan County in the first two nights of action in the Babe Ruth District Tournament. Monday the Warren 14s won 15-11. Devon Johns & Tyler Sago each scored 3 runs for the winners. A highlight for Logan wasWes Stratton's 3-run triple, driving in Jordan Hendrix, Dillon Brown & Trent Deberry. Getting a pair of hits each for Logan were Ben Wright & Dalton Clark.
Warren's 13-year-olds won 10-4 with Austin McElwayne & Taylor Perdue scoring 2 runs each. Matt Guinn scored 2 of Logan's runs. Jacob Decker had two hits for Logan.
The tournament continues through Sunday.

TVA study shows Adairville site ready for data center
A site located in Adairville has favorable attributes to attract a data center project according to a recent economic development study sponsored by TVA..
Designation of the site, which is located on North Nashville Road in Adairville, is a result of a project conducted by TVA & Chicago-based Deloitte Consulting. Criteria for selecting the sites include accessibility, strong telecommunications infrastructure, and the availability of reliable electric power.
“This ready-for-development primary designation gives our community a competitive edge when the next data center project is looking for an optimal site,” said Tom Harned of LEAD.

District Babe Ruth tournament underway at LCHS
District Babe Ruth Tournaments in three age groups are being played this week at Logan County High School. The 13-year-old team starts action Monday night at 8 against Warren County. Russellville High School Soccer Camp this week
A soccer camp for those going into 2nd grade through 8th grade will run Monday through Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. daily. The fee is $12 per session or $30 for all three. Summer Art at the Saddle Factory Saturday

Cross seeks funds to Rural Journalism endowment
Former Russellville newspaperman Al Cross is director of the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues headquart-ered at the University of Kentucky. Kentucky Wonders garden market opens Thursday
A new garden market will open in Russellville Thursday. Kentucky Wonders Market will be located at the Historic Russellville building on East 4th Street next to Red Tree and across from the Saddle Factory. It will run from 12:30-5 p.m. Thursdays to start the 2011 season. A highlight will be the arrival of Jackson's Orchard's fresh fruit truck. Burchett Greenhouses will have a variety of flowers for trans-planting. Turner Valley Produce will be among the vegetable vendors..

Officials, builder, architect break Creekwood ground
Officials from corporate headquarters in Orlando, including President Michelle Givens, were on hand for groundbreaking of the $11.2 million facility that will be the new home of the Creekwood Nursing and ReHab Center. It's located on the former farm of the late Hilton and Myra Boyles between WRUS and BHI assisted living facility. Also taking part in the program were Administrator Elizabeth Gettings, architectDavid Allen of Louisville, contrac-tor JimSchafer of Louisvlle, Adventist vice president Kevin Ev-ans, chaplainDave Ondrejka, and maintenance director Roger Nelson. Russellville Councilman Lanny McPherson was one of those manning a shovel. Chuck Rassenboss will be project manager and Henry Reed site superintendent for the massive build-ing, which will be triple the size of the present one and will overlook Rolling Hills golf course.

Mike Hoots to be assistant principal at LCHS
Upon the retirement of veteran educator Mike Haynes, another coach has been named assistant principal at Logan County High School. Mike Hoots, who has taught and coached at LCHS for six years, will join Alisa Todd as assistant principals underCasey Jaynes at LCHS.

Little Leaguers win again, go 4-0 in district tournament
The Logan County 9-10 All-Stars beat Bowling Green West 16-6 Monday morning and have earned the top seed among the final 4 teams which survived preliminary play. They will play Wednesday night at Kereiakes Park.

Logan 9-10s run District Little League record to 3-0
The Logan County 9-10 All-Stars ran their District Little League Tournament record to 3-0 with a 4-0 win over Bowling Green East Sunday in Bowling Green. Tanner Baldwin was the winning pit-cher. Nick Wooden was the starting pitcher in the other two wins, 14-1 over Muhlenberg County and 12-2 over the East 9-year-olds. Also seeing time on the mound have beenKoby Wall, Parker White, Nate Woodall, Braxton Meguiar and Jagger Hales. Other team members are Bradley Taylor, Kelby Epley, Dalton Dean and Dylan Borders. The team will be a number one seed if they win over BG West at 10 a.m. Monday. Coaches are David Woodall, Kyle Wall and Ethan Meguiar.

James Henry Duncan featured speaker for the 4th
An Independence Day celebration will be held Monday at the 4th Street Theater at 10 a.m. Some of those participating will includeBro. Joe Carrico, the Fort Campbell Color Guard, Russellville Mayor Mark Stratton, Felicia Bland and Linda Hatler, James Henry Duncan will be the featured speaker. The 4th of July celebration is sponsored by Main Street Russellville and the city of Russellville. The ceremony has been moved from the square because of weather, WRUS reports.

Kids' 4th of July Parade to begin at Guions' again
A Russellville 4th of July tradition continues Monday when the Kids' 4th of July Parade will be held in downtown Russellville. Bob and Joyce Guion began organizing the parades when their own children (Carol Switzer, Janice Threlkeld, Julie Steele and Andy Guion) were young in the 1960s. The Russellville Kiwanis Club now is in charge with the gathering still beginning at the Guions' home on West 8th Street. Children and adults are invited to deco-rate bikes, trikes, wagons, and themselves. Walkers are welcome, too. The gathering begins at 9:30 a.m. with the parade beginning at 10. Participants will circle Carrico Park Square and go back up Winter Street to the Guion home for refreshments.

Clay Bilyeu wins awards at Auburn Cruise-In
Clay Bilyeu , who owns and operates a vehicle body shop in Russellville, dominated the Auburn Cruise-In Saturday, taking top honors among the approximately 75 vehicles. He received the Ma-yor's Choice Award from Mayor Dewey Roche, the Auburn Tour-ism Choice Award, and Best Paint. A motorcycle which Bilyeu had painted won Best Bike honors for Ricky Hankins. Bilyeu is the driving force behind the popular Summer Nights series in Russellville and also provides entertainment at events around the area. J.R. Cundiff was in charge of the Auburn Cruise-In and long-time event leader Bob Wylie cooked the beans for participants
