Benton to play for Cats against Tops at Titans' field
Former Russellville High star athlete Mikie Benton is expected to see action tonight when the Kentucky Wildcats plays the WKU Hilltoppers at Nashville's LP Field. Here's the lead to the UK Press Guide's profile of Benton: "Moved from cornerback to free safety during the spring ... Capable walk-on began earning playing time last season at cornerback and on special teams ... Provides quality depth in the defensive backfield ... Has a reputation for his attitude in practice and a phenomenal work ethic ... Scout Player of the Week three times during his career." Benton started for Coach John Myers' Panthers on both sides of the ball for three years, 2006-08.
The Guide continues, "Selected to Kentucky's East/West All-Star Game ... Totaled 38 tackles, three interceptions and 11 pass breakups on defense as a senior ... As a running back, gained 749 yards on 76 carries scoring 14 touchdowns ... At quarterback, completed 37 of 76 attempts through the air for 852 yards and 14 touchdowns ... Chamber’s Women in Business luncheon today
The Logan County Chamber of Commerce's Third Annual Women in Business Luncheon will be Wednesday at the Logan County Extension Office, with doors opening at 11:30 a.m. The speaker will be Grace Lichtenstein, life coach and corporate trainer. Her message will center around the theme of "Live, Love, Laugh -- Yes, It Is That Simple." Tickets are available at the Chamber office for $10 each. Seating is limited. Call 726-2206.

Wall of Heroes to be in Festival; submissions sought
In connection with the Tobacco & Heritage Festival theme “Small Towns. Big Heroes.” the Leadership Logan Alumni group is spon-soring a Wall of Heroes. The Wall will be available for public view-ing in the old Courthouse Oct. 2-8.The focus of the Wall is limited to military and civil servants. Those with questions or who need additional information can call the Chamber at 726-2206. Each submission will consist of an 8x10 photo and a standardized information form.
Notes: 8x10 photo copies are preferred. Items will not be returned so submitters should make copies before turning them in. After the festival, items will be donated to the library and preserved for historical reference. Forms are available for pick up at the Cham-ber office and the library and can also be found on the Chamber web site at www.loganchamber.com Photos and forms can be dropped off at the Chamber and library. Drake Duncan to play golf for Middle Tennessee
The grandson of a Russellville couple has announced he will play golf for Middle Tennessee State University. Drake Duncan led South Warren High School to its biggest sports success as a first-year school last year when the Spartans qualified for the state tournament as regional runner-up. The Daily News reports he had a top-15 finish and a pair of top-25 placements in national events in summer action. The presence of former Russellville High golf star Paul Sansom on the MTSU team helped him choose the Blue Raiders. A Greenwood golfer his first two years of high school, he is the son of former RHS golfer David Duncan and the grandson of Buddy and Mattie Duncan of Russellville.

Rone, Lancaster lead Cougars to first Gregory victory
Justin Rone threw two touchdown passes and made a key interception to to help the Logan County Cougars beat visiting South Warren 24-13 Friday. It was the first win of the Dain Gregory Coaching Era at LCHS. Rone, who was laptop the area in passing yards going into the game, threw for 171 yards in this one, including touchdown passes of 60 and 70 yards to Aratan Martin and Twin Lancaster. The first touchdown had come on a 21-yard run by Lancaster. Landon Stratton kicked a 26-yard field goal and Korey Jaynes kicked an extra point.
The Barrett Croslin-led Russellville Panthers got good play from their offense but a breakdown in special teams played a big role in the Panthers' 57-28 loss to visiting Fort Campbell Friday.

Jay Campbell marketing choice beef cuts at market
A unique vendor at the Logan County Farmers' Market on Satur-days has been Logan County High School agriculture teacher Jay Campbell. Campbell's Choice Cuts LLC. sold its first retail meat cuts on July 9 at the farmers' market. He offers retail cuts and 1/4 beef sales to the public. A 1/4 of a beef cost around $475 for 100 pounds. Retail cuts range from $3.50/lb. for ground beef to $12/lb. for T-bone, sirloin, and ribeye steaks. "Our product is all natural, vacuum packaged, USDA inspected, frozen, and ready to be thawed for all grilling occasions," says Campbell. "Come by to see us on Saturday's from 8-12 a.m. and many of the venders at the farmers' market." Campbell has three beefs available this fall and 10 beefs on feed for the spring of 2012. The Farmers' Market is located off the U.S. 68-80 North Bypass in the UK Ag Complex.

Both local football teams to play home openers tonight
A first will be recorded tonight at Logan County High School. Either the Cougars will get their first win as Coach Dain Gregory at the helm or South Warren will win its first-ever varsity football contest. The Cougars came close last week at Butler County, losing by 2. This is the Spartans' first varsity season. Russellville will entertain an old foe and a great program in the Fort Campbell Falcons. Cancer takes beloved educator Belinda Morris Ray
A moment of prayer in which school, church, and business friends of Belinda Morris Ray were planning to participate was planned Wednesday at noon. However, the Russellville director of Gifted Education and speech therapist died in the early morning hours, She was in the Hospice Center in Bowling Green. Mrs. Ray bat- tled cancer for years. Donna Gholson, who is head of public rela-tions for the system, says, "She was one of the kindest, most giv-ing, and positive people I’ve ever known and we want to cover her family with comfort and prayer." The 1978 graduate of RHS was the wife of businessman and civic leader Charlie Ray. They have two college-age children, Taylor and Cooper Ray.

Democratic rally featuring Abramson set Saturday
The Logan County Democratic Executive Committee and the Logan Democratic Woman’s Club will sponsor on Saturday, Aug. 27 a Democratic rally and fund-raiser, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the National Guard Armory in Russellville. The featured speaker will be Jerry Abramson, the party's nominee for lieutenant governor. Other Democratic candidates or their representatives will speak. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for ages 5-12. A Kindle ebook reader will be raffled as well as other items.

Lady Cougars beat RHS for 57th straight district win
Coach Steve Lyne's Logan County Lady Cougars won at Russellville 2-0 Tuesday for their 57th straight 13th District win. The JV also won by the same score. The last time Logan lost a district game was seven years ago today, Aug. 17, 2004. That was to Franklin-Simpson in the season opener. Logan has been to the regional finals 8 of the last 8 years.

Community Ed: Basic Spanish for Beginners offered
Learn to speak the Spanish language in nine weeks! This program will teach the basics of conversational Spanish. There are 8 weeks of class, and a special ninth session at a local Mexican restaurant, where students will put your knowledge to work while enjoy-ing a celebratory meal, in Spanish, of course! Sessions will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 13 and end on Nov. 22. There will be no class on October 4 or 11, due to fall break. Classes will be held at Russellville High School, in room 7, from 6-8 p.m. The instructor will be Myrah Duncan, who works for Logan County Schools, and whose native language is Spanish. Davis Pardue's summer included golf wins
Russellville senior Davis Pardue had a winning summer on the links. He won a Pepsi event at Hopkinsville Country Club with a 73 and another on the Iroquois City Course wth a 77. He tied for 10th place in a tournament at Ashland and was in the top 20 in an SJGA event. He qualified to play in a major junior tournament at the famed Sawgrass course in Ponte Vedra, Fla. Joining him in a practice round were his brother Daniel and his dad, Dennis Pardue, who is also his coach at RHS. They were on the course with PGA tour veterans Vijay Singh and Davis Love III. Davis Par-due, who qualified for the Kentucky Amateur at Fort Knox, and fellow seniors Caleb Wills and John David Reeves will lead the Panthers this year. Cameron Tisdale and Travis McDaniel are also members of the team.

McConnell's appearance at Chamber Meal a sellout
No tickets remain for the Logan County Chamber of Commerce Membership Luncheon today, according to Cathy Maroney of the Chamber. U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell will be the speaker.

Lady Cougars finish 4th in Apollo v'ball tournament
The Logan County Lady Cougars beat Owensboro and Kentucky Country Day by 2-0 each Friday to advance to the Gold Bracket of the Owensboro Apollo volleyball invitational Saturday. The Ladies won their opener Saturday 2-0 over Green County in the quarter-finals before losing 0-2 to host Apollo in the semifinals and 1-2 to Caldwell County in the third-place match. Key player Jessica Anderson was injured and had to visit the emergency room.

Middle School Football Jamboree set at Rhea Stadium
A Middle School Jamboree will be held at Rhea Stadium: today, Among other games, the Logan County Cougars will face Wayne County at 10 a.m. while the host Panthers will entertain Browning Springs, Miss., at 5:30. Daniel Elliott is the new RMS head coach.

WRUS Stuff the Bus event generates funds, food
WRUS sponsored the second annual Stuff the Bus event for all Russellville and Logan County schools on July 29 and 30. The generous people of Russellville and Logan County donated over $1,000 and approximately 3,900 items. All the funds and supplies donated were divided among eight schools’ Family Resource and Youth Service Center.directors are Emily Cassetty, Carol Kees, Melanie Manley, Jama Richardson and Debbie Browder. Their efforts are supported by Hope Strode, Kathy Wagoner, Charlotte Stratton and Deborah Elliott, according to Chris McGinnis of WRUS.

Summer Art at the Saddle Factory Saturday
A chance for artists and craftspeople who want to show and sell their creations will be held in Russellville Saturday on the grounds of the Saddle Factory on East Fourth and Breathitt streets where the Kentucky Artisans at the Saddle Factory outlet is located. John Logan Dockins to play baseball for Faulkner
After watching his sister Lee win the gold in Greece and perform for large crowds in Switzerland, John Logan Dockins returns to the spotlight Thursday at 2 p.m. when he signs to play baseball for Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala. Dockins was a four-year starter at quarterback for Logan County High School and three- plus years in baseball. He had 39 hits and 32 RBIs for the district champion Cougars this season. His dad, Harris Dockins,said he was offered scholarships in both football and baseball by Campbellsville University. Murray State wanted him to play junior college baseball first. "Faulkner coach Patrick McCarthy made it clear they need a power hitter and a first baseball, and he really wanted him," Harris Dockins said.
Faulkner went 48-15 this spring and qualified for the NAIA World Series for the first time in school history. Two Eagles were drafted into professional baseball and a third signed a pro contract as a free agent.

Thursday deadline for BG Tech fall registration
This Thursday is the deadline for registering for one or both Bow-ling Green Technical College courses being offered in Russellville this fall. Barry Kennedy will teach History 109 on Mondays from 5:30-8:15 and Jim Turner will teach COM 181 (Public Speaking) on Tuesdays at the same time. Both classes will be at the Extension Office. The three-hour courses will cost $405 plus books. BG Tech does not charge admissions fees. The courses will transfer to WKU and other four-year colleges in Kentucky. Dust Bowl continues in 8th of August tournament
Some well-known basketball players will continue play Sunday in the 8th of August Dust Bowl at Hampton Park, which has its largest field ever. Among the visitors are former UK player Brandon Stockton, former state tournament, Morehead and Georgetown standoutVincent Crutcher, former Franklin-Simpson post player Matt Morris and veteran F-S coach Defray Holts. Former Russellville players include Tony Key, Michael Morris, Teco Dickerson, Cedric Offutt, Orlondo Woodard, D.J. Quarles, Victor Hampton, DeVonta Bryant, & Kevin Temple along with current RHS player Zac Hines and Logan County standout Twin Lancaster. Michael Elliott, Lonnie Mason & Tyrone Kennedy are in charge with Reggie Gough the head official. Games will begin at 10 a.m. and last all day. A large crowd attended Saturday's festivities that included many family reunions.

8th of August Emancipation Celebration opens today
Although events leading up the opening have been going on for two days, the 8th of August Emancipation Celebration will officially begin at 10 a,m. today at Hampton Park. Tournament games begin at Hampton Park at 8 a.m. They include men's softball, cornhole and Dust Bowl basketball. A golf scramble tees off at 8 a.m. at Rolling Hills Golf Course. The Black Widow Band will entertain with a free concert in the park, starting at 5 p.m., providing a variety of music for three hours. Food, fellowship, family and fun will contin-ue for many hours as well as during the day Sunday.

Grief over teens' deaths centered in Logan, Todd
The deaths of teen-aged cousins in a Bowling Green auto accident Wednesday morning is being grieved from Bowling Green to far Western Kentucky, maybe even Lexington. The nucleus of the young men's families is the Olmstead-Allensville area. Benton Page and Will Mallory were the grandsons of Victor and Henry Etta Page of Allensville and Bill Mallory of Olmstead. Both out-standing and well-known high school athletes, the teens were the sons of brother-sister Henry Page of Bowling Green and Jenny Mallory of LaCenter and their spouses, Amy Page and Mike Mallory. Will was the nephew of Logan Countians Billy Mallory, Donna Bush, Melinda Hendricks and Bebe Noe, Benton was a spring graduate of Bowling Green High and was enrolled at WKU. Will graduated from Ballard Memorial and was a student at UK.

Don Firchow, Fellowship Church earn state award
Stevenson Elementary School’s Family Resource Center director Carol Kees' two nominees for the Bridges over Barriers Best Partner Award have earned state honors. The Bridges over Barriers Award is presented by the Family Resource and Youth Service Centers of Kentucky to a non-profit organization, a for-profit organization, and an individual who significantly support the goals of Kentucky FRYSC. Nominees must have provided on-going support in helping a center meet one or more core/optional components. The winners of the award this year are Don Firchow, who was nominated in the Individual category, and the Fellowship Church of Christ in the Non-Profit Organization category. Tee Dee Young headlines Blues concert Friday
Tee Dee Young and Scandalous, the newly crowned Beale Street Blues Kings, will be the featured act in the Mary Ann Fisher Summer Concert Series, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday on the grounds of the African American Museums at Sixth and Morgan streets in Russellville. The Rev. Charlie Edmonds will be the opening act. All Russellville Blues performances are free.

WKU, BG Tech to sign joint student agreement
An historic Joint Admissions Agreement Signing Ceremony between Bowling Green Technical College and Western Kentucky University, The signing will take place at the KATI Campus of Bowling Green Tech on Tuesday, Aug. 8 at 10:30 a.m. in the Round Room. This initiative will allow students to enroll jointly in both institutions, giving them access to more resources and create a smooth transfer process.

Alex's Lemonade Stand, which is now organized by Debra Gensheimer and her family, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Auburn at Masters Printing Company on the corner of Wilson and Main across from Minit Mart.
