Both Chandler’s School and Lewisburg School were recently awarded $5,000 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) grants. The grants were provided by the Tennessee Valley Authority and its retiree organization, Bicentennial Volunteers Incorporated.
Grants totaling $600,000 were awarded to educators in public schools to develop science, technology, engineering, and math education projects all across the Tennessee Valley. The competitive grant program, operated in partnership with Battelle Education, received more than 290 grant requests from six states across TVA’s service territory.
At Chandler’s, the funds will be used to create a STEM lab for all grades. Items to be purchased include robots, drones, and supplies for coding. The grant application was written by teachers Holly Carpenter, Brianna Hopkins, and Marty White.
At Lewisburg, funds will be used to purchase two 3D printers and supplies to use in project-based learning across all grade levels. The grant was written by teacher Grace Harris. Earlier in the year, Harris was also awarded a $5,000 grant from Toshiba for the creation of an outdoor classroom.
