SKYCTC's Allied Respiratory Care
lends ventilators to Med Center
Healthcare professionals on the front line are struggling to find enough equipment. The Medical Center at Bowling Green can now breathe a sigh of relief in preparation for more Covid-19 patients. Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College came to the rescue, lending the hospital 13 ventilators. “It’s very difficult now for hospitals to get the equipment that they need. We’re just thrilled that we can help them out,” said SKYCTC respiratory care and allied health program director Dwight Austin. Med Center Health partners with the SKYCTC program, and the ventilators are used to train the medical students. Ventilators like these tend to cost around $14,000. A statement from the hospital reads: “Med center health is grateful to our friends at SKYCTC and many other organizations that have generously reached out to offer their assistance and support. It is critical that we all come together to support our community at this time. This is a great example of just that”.

Lewisburg City Clerk dies unexpectedly
Lewisburg City Clerk Angela Swinney died unexpectedly in her sleep during the night Friday/Saturday. The 52-year-old wife, mother and grandmother had held the clerk's post for almost three decades. Price Funeral Home will follow pandemic rules and hold a memorial service when public gatherings are allowed. Her obituary can be found in the Obituary section of The Logan Journal.

Logan has 3rd confirmed COVID-19 case
The Barren River District Health Department currently has 29 cases of COVID-19 in the Barren River District, four of which have recovered. Barren County has one, Butler County has one, Edmonson County has two, Logan County has three, Simpson County has nine, and Warren County has 13. Our district has one death reported from COVID-19. We stand in solidarity with those affected during these difficult times. It is the personal responsibility of each Barren River District resident to continue taking social distancing measures in order to help slow the spread of the virus.

The Board of Directors of the Logan Economic Alliance for Development (LEAD) and the Logan Industrial Development Authority (IDA) will not meet during the month of April. From WRUS News: The Barren River District Health Department is investigating 15 cases of COVID-19 in the Barren River District: Warren County has ten cases; Simpson County has four; Logan County has one. The Muhlenberg County Health Department confirms 7 cases of COVID-19. In neighboring Tennessee counties, Robertson County, reports 20 cases, 6 in Montgomery County, and 293 in Davidson County.

Frank Cardwell among COVID-19 patients
Retired Franklin-Simpson basketball coach and principal Frank Cardwell Sr. is hospitalized in Bowling Green after having been confirmed to have a case of COVID-19, according to his son Frank Jr. Coach Cardwell is one of the most popular former rivals among Logan County sports fans. He also served as principal at Beech High School in Sumner County, Tenn. after retiring in Kentucky.

COVID-19 case in Logan
From WRUS News: Gov. Andy Beshear's Monday Coronavirus update included new cases in Warren, Simpson and Allen Counties in South Central Kentucky. While the governor did not mention Logan County, the state website is showing a positive test result in our county. The Barren River Health Dept. has confirmed the positive result is a 55 year old Female. https://govstatus.egov.com/kycovid19
The governor also introduced a new hotline available to report those who are not abiding by state orders. You may call 1-833-KYSAFER that's 1-833-597-2337.The hotline will be staffed from 7a.m.-9 p.m. daily, and you may leave a message outside of these times. Emerson closes because of a sick employee
From WRUS: In a company statement provided by an Emerson spokesperson, we’ve learned an employee at Emerson’s hermetic motors manufacturing facility in Russellville, KY has been diagnosed with symptoms that are consistent with COVID-19 and is awaiting test results. Out of an abundance of caution, employees at the facility were sent home on Friday afternoon and no shifts are working over the weekend as a professional deep cleaning and disinfecting of the facility is done. Employees will be notified by phone later this weekend if they can report to work on Monday.

BG attorney David Broderick
first confirmed area virus patient
The Bowling Green law firm of Broderick & Davenport has announced that senior partner David Broderick was the first person in this area to test positive for the Coronavirus. He has been treated and now is recuperating at home. The 73-year-old Broderick worked frequently in Logan County in the late 20th century, often being an attorney for one side or the other in cases involving governmental entitiess.

Second COVID-19 case
confirmed in Warren County
The Barren River District Health Department is investigating its 2nd case of COVID-19 (2019 novel coronavirus) in a Warren County resident. The patient is an 80-year-old female. Health officials are working with the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) to identify and contact all those who may have been exposed to the infected person. These individuals will be monitored for fever and respiratory symptoms. Dr. Matthew L. Hunt, Health Department Director, says, “With more labs on board for testing, we were prepared for the number of cases to rise. This increase reinforces the need to follow Governor Beshear’s recommendation for Kentuckians to avoid gatherings both large and small.”

Health Department looking for
contacts of BG COVID-19 patient
On March 18, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Warren County’s first positive COVID-19 case. The Barren River District Health Department (BRDHD) is working in consultation with Kentucky Department of Public Health to conduct a case investigation to determine people who may have been in contact with the patient. The BRDHD will identify, find, and assess contacts. Individuals identified as contacts to the case will be notified by the health department with instructions to self-quarantine to prevent possible spread of the virus if indicated.

Logan County Good Samaritan, Inc. is in desperate need of cereal, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, soups and fruits for their clients. The office staff needs antibacterial /antiviral wipes to sanitize the carts after each use. They are trying to protect staff and clients, who are both mostly elderly. If you have an extra one or two of these, please share with the people that have almost nothing.

Logan food service continuing
From Logan County Schools Food Service Director Jaime Fair: Logan County Schools will be serving FREE meals to all children 18 and under again tomorrow. Pick-up times for breakfast are 8-9 a.m. and lunch and lunch 11 a.m.-1 p.m. We plan to expand our program starting Wednesday, March 18 with additional meal sites. We will send site info out soon. If anyone has circumstances where they are unable to pick up meals now, please contact your school office with the name of your student.

Auburn Bank closing lobbies,

Because of COVID-19 concerns, Auburn Banking Company has decided to close its lobbies in Auburn and Russellville beginning Wednesday, according to President Brian White. Chamber's Megan Paschall
has new baby daughter
Logan County Chamber of Commerce Executive Assistant Megan Paschall gave birth to her second child, Millie Kay Paschall, Monday. Millie weighed 9 pounds and 14 ounces and was 20.5 inches. Megan and husband Alex Paschall have an older child, Witten. The Chamber recently added Ann Page McReynolds to the staff, and she will be able to assume many of Megan’s duties in assistant to Executive Director Karen Logan while Paschall is on maternity leave.

Casey's stores taking steps
to prevent virus spread
Casey's General Stores President and CEO Darren Rebelez has announced Casey's is "...temporarily discontinuing the use of refillable mugs and cups in our stores in the interest of the wellbeing of our guests. Disposable cups are available and we appreciate your patience." Many long-time Casey's customers have 52-ounce and smaller mugs that have been refillable at a lower price. Regular size styrofoam and plastic cups have also been used for refills. Rebelez also talked about Casey's employees' enhanced and more frequent cleaning of counters, food preparation areas, restrooms and gasoline pumps in reaction to the spread of coronavirus. Casey's has store locations in Russellville and Auburn.

Russellville Board deals with virus
The Russellville Independent Board of Education will have a special called meeting this evening (Thursday) at 6 p.m. in the Central Office Board Room, under the provisions of KRS 61.823(5). The Board will be approving a temporary application for a Non-Traditional Instruction [NTI] program and asking permission from the USDA to serve student meals in the event of school closure. Russellville Independent School District does not have any plans to close in response to COVID-19 at this time. These steps are being taken in order to be proactive in the event of future mandates.

All sports practices and games have been canceled this afternoon for Russellville High School and Middle School, Logan County High School, and Logan County Middle School Football because of “impending severe weather.” LCHS Athletic Director Greg Howard says all Jr. Pro Basketball games and practices “are postponed until further notice.” RHS Principal Ben Bruni says the meeting for current RHS freshmen parents has been canceled and will be rescheduled in the near future.”

for Donelson Christian School
Russellville Christian School has decided to conduct a school supply drive for Donelson Christian Academy. The school suffered major damage in the Nashville storm, and its eight preschool rooms and five Pre-K rooms lost everything. Anyone wanting to help with the effort can donate the following items: books, puzzles, crayons, glue sticks, chalk, baby wipes, Play Doh sets, washable paint, blocks, tissues, Lysol, hand sanitizer, and toys for center playtime. Paige Vanzant to sign with Brescia
Paige Vanzant, who was named First Team Season All-Region and is a three-year starter for the Logan County Lady Cougars, will sign to play basketball for Brescia University Friday at the Logan County CTC this Friday at 3:30 p.m. Vanzant finished her Lady Cougar career impressively with over 1000 points and over 350 each of steals, assists and rebounds. Totals are 1,156 points, 388 rebounds, 372 assists and 356 steals. Coach Finley Baird’s team won three district championships, three regional games and 60 games overall during Vanzant’s three seasons as the starting point guard.

WKU offers 4-H Horse Camp
The Southcentral Kentucky 4-H Horse Camp will be held at the WKU Ag Expo Center in Bowling Green April 16-18. Registration is now available for young people who were ages 9-18 on Jan. 1. Cloverbuds ages 5-8 can be part of a Saturday-only program. A Horse Lovers Program for ages 9-18 without a horse will be held Friday and Saturday. Fees are $98 for the three-day program, $82 for the Horse Lovers, and $25 for Cloverbuds. Special Needs accommodations will be available.

BGH ends Cougar season
After Logan County led over 20 of the 24 minutes of the first three quarters, including by 40-33 with 3:25 in the third, the Bowling Green Purples outscored the Cougars 31-12 the rest of the way. BGH won the regional semifinal game 64-52 at Diddle Arena Monday, ending Logan’s 24-game winning streak at 28-4 on the season. The Cougars were effective in shutting down BGH star Isaiah Mason until the fourth quarter, but sub Dorian Morrison scored 23 points, with three coming on a halfcourt shot at halftime, cutting the Cougar lead to 30-28. Rooster Woodard led LCHS with 21 points while Jose Nazario & Dalton Thompson each added 12. Mason, Dezmond Wilson & Turner Buttry scored 9 each for the 26-7 Purples.

Head's Lady Purples headed to state
For the second time in his three years at the helm, Coach Calvin Head and his Bowling Green Lady Purples are headed to the state basketball tournament. BGH has met Barren County in the regional finals three straight years, splitting the first two titles. The Lady Purples won 58-48 Saturday. BGH is 28-6 on the season, 18-1 in the region. In five postseason games, the Lady Purples have averaged winning 61-37. Head was athletic director, softball coach and girls basketball coach at Russellville before taking a job at BGH. Assistant Coach Chloe Elam is a former RHS star point guard. Bowling Green plays Russell in its state tournament opener this week.

Barren County ends
Lady Cougar season
Defending regional champion Barren County proved again in the regional semifinals Friday to be better than the Logan County Lady Cougars. The Trojanettes beat Logan at this stage last year 71-41; this time it was 72-43. Barren led 10-0 before the Lady Cougars got a shot to fall. The scores at the first three stops were 19-6, 38-14 and 60-30. Elizabeth Bertram led the winners with 30 points, hitting 6 of 10 three-pointers. Carly Delk added 14. For Logan Kennedy Nichols Nscored 17 and Peyton Vanzant 13 in their final high school game. Addie White hit her two final three-point attempts. Barren County will play Coach Calvin Head’s Bowling Green Lady Purples for the third straight regional finals Saturday night. Each has won once.

The Logan County High School Bass Fishing team will compete at Lake Beshear Saturday. This tournament is being sponsored by Muhlenberg County High School. Cougars win 79-51, set up
showdown with BGH
The Logan County Cougars scored the first 15 points of their Fourth Region opener Tuesday and maintained a margin in that range for most of the evening on the way to a 79-58 win over Cumberland County. The Cougar defense forced the Panthers into 11 first-quarter turnovers, a sign of things to come. Six Cougars scored 8 or more points—Josh Nazario 20, Dalton Thompson 16, Dylan Basham 12, Anthony Woodard 10, Jay Hardison 9 and Nathaniel Vick 8. Brady Griggs ran the offense from his point guard slot and hit a 3-pointer when his team needed it. The Cougars (28-3, 18-0 in the region, 24 straight wins) must wait almost a week before meeting Bowling Green (24-7, 13-2) in Monday’s semifinals.

BGH ends Lady Panther season
The Russellville Lady Panthers built a first-quarter lead, played excellent first-half defense, and rebounded well in their Fourth Region Tournament game against heavily favored Bowling Green Sunday. Although RHS often worked to get in position for makeable shots, the ball wouldn’t stay in the basket. BGH won 61-29. Despite missing 10 minutes of the second quarter with three quick fouls, Lady Panther Anastasia Dowlen scored 12 points, but no other RHS player came close to that. Freshman point guard Amiyah Collier couldn’t get a field goal to fall, but she had 14 rebounds. With Dowlen out, Chloe Whitescarver, who usually spends a lot of time around the perimeter, had 7 rebounds at halftime. Freshman Saniyah Shelton scored 22 points for Coach Calvin Head’s Lady Purples in the first three quarters. Coach Cameron Jackson’s Lady Panthers won 19 games for the second straight year. BGH improve to 26-6.
