The Russellville Independent School Board of Education has named veteran educator and former Panther Superintendent Leon Smith as acting superintendent of the southcentral Kentucky school district. Smith had a very successful tenure as Russellville Independent School superintendent beginning in 2009 and serving until his retirement date in June of 2017.

Smith will direct the Russellville public schools until the board selects a permanent replacement for outgoing superintendent Bart Flener, who will complete his duties June 30 before transitioning to his new role as Green River Regional Educational Cooperative (GRREC) Executive Director.

Chairman James Milam stated, “We are honored that Mr. Leon Smith has agreed to serve as acting superintendent. Since serving us for eight years, he has continued to support the Panther nation. His interest in our students and community has continued. Mr. Smith will accompany us as we meet new challenges.”

Smith said, “I feel humbled to have been asked by the Russellville Independent Board to serve for a brief period of time during this transition period. This is a district which is near and dear to my heart and I’m honored to contributeonce again on behalf of the Panthers.”

Flener added,“The district is in wonderful hands with Leon Smith at the helm. I reflect with great appreciation on the mentorship he has provided for me during my tenure here in Russellville Independent Schools and I’m happy to hand the reins back to him”
