Volunteer cleanup day set

at Coon Range Fish & Game

Volunteers are welcome to help clear up a North Logan landmark Monday. A Facebook group has been formed called Save Coon Range Fish & Game Club. From 1-5 p.m., volunteers are asked to come help mow, weedeat and clear brush. Work is already underway on the clubhouse, which has deteriorated over the years with a lack of use.

Logan has added 133 COVID-19 cases in May

With 29 new COVID-19 cases confirmed this week, Logan County has added 133 cases the first four weeks of May, rising from 10 on April 30 to 143 on May 29. That's an average of 33 per week. A fourth death was added this week. On a brighter note, the number of people who have recovered this week (18) is the largest so far. Still, 97 Logan Countians are considered to have active cases. The Barren River District Health Department releases no information about the demographics of those who have been struck with this disease, unlike some other area heath departments.

Arts Council cancels summer drama camp

From the Russellville Arts Council: We are very sad in this decision, but will have to postpone our Summer Youth Drama Camp for 2020 due to the continuing uncertainty that the Covid-19 virus has given to our community. We will reschedule our production of Disney's FROZEN to NEXT SUMMER of 2021. We hope that we will have an outstanding group of kids to come out to make this musical an experience to remember.

City school board meeting today

to begin superintendent search

The Russellville Independent Schools Board of Education will meet in closed session today at 6 p.m. as the process begins to choose a new superintendent. Last week, current superintendent Bart Flener announced he is resigning to accept the leadership position of the educational cooperative which works with local schools. In the meeting announcement, the agenda includes "CLOSED SESSION FOR DISCUSSION OF PERSONNEL WHICH MAY LEAD TO APPOINTMENT OF AN INDIVIDUAL UNDER GUIDELINES OF KRS 61.810(1)f)." That could involve naming an interim superintendent until a permanent hire can be made. The board has relied on educational consultant Phil Eason in past key personnel searches. Leon Smith, who retired three years after a successful and popular tenure as superintendent, continues to live in Russellville.

Post Oak pastor tests positive for COVID-19

Post Oak Baptist Church Pastor Nick Stamps told his congregation Saturday that he has tested positive for COVID-19. "I will have to continue my quarantine for the time being, but that will not hinder our online worship services from continuing. I will be recording my message later this evening or in the morning and posting it along with worship by our team... I ask that you continue to pray that this will not spread any further, that my family and others would be protected from it, and for healing for others who have contracted it. Thank you ahead of time for your prayers, and I look forward to worshipping online with you tomorrow morning."

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Logan County has grown by 32 in the last week. According to a report from the Barren River Health Department Friday, Logan County now has 114 cases, up from 82 last Friday, May 15. On Thursday, April 30, the number was 10. That's an increase of 1040 percent in three weeks. Three deaths have been recorded, even though Creekwood Nursing and Rehab is listed with five deaths. That's because at least two of the deceased were from other counties.

Kevin Birdwhistell achieves theatre arts milestones

Kevin Birdwhistell, the son of Logan County High School graduate Joe Birdwhistell and the grandson of Bob and Donna Birdwhistell of Lewisburg, has earned made notable achievements in theatre arts. In addition to graduating from Northern Kentucky University, he is serving as intern for AthensWest Theatre Company in Lexington and has a leadership role with the Governor's School of the Arts this summer. He participated in that program a few years ago as a South Warren High School student.

Med Center nurse from Auburn dies of COVID-19

The Medical Center of Bowling Green has announced the death of CNA Wanda Ann Hines Johnson of Auburn as a result of COVID-19 at the University of Kentucky Hospital Monday. She had worked in the Med Center's 4A inpatient unit since 2016, says CEO Connie Smith. The 60-year-old was married to Robert Johnson and had three children, three step-children, 17 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. WNKY reported over a week ago that 95 Med Center employees had tested positive for COVID-19 with 38 having recovered. Tuesday the Barren River Health Department reported 98 confirmed cases in Logan County with three deaths, but Gov. Andy Beshear said in his Tuesday press conference that an 88-year-old man has also died, bringing the Logan death total to four.

Logan's COVID-19 confirmed cases multiplied by 8 in half a month

On May 15, Logan County has more that eight times as many confirmed COVID-19 cases than it did April 30, according to statistics provided by the Barren River Area Health Department. The total today was 83 cases with 14 recovered and 2 deaths. On April 30, the total had grown from its long-time resting place of 8 to 10 with 8 recovered and no deaths. A week later on May 8, the total had ballooned to 53 with 9 recoveries and the two deaths. After being among the top five among Kentucky's 120 counties with new cases three straight days this week, Logan has added two and three new confirmed cases Thursday and Friday. Gov. Andy Beshear, announced Friday that he will not conduct this weekend his daily briefings, which have become known as "Afternoons with Andy."

Kirbys donate 5,000 gloves to Creekwood

Creekwood Nursing & Rehab received a donation of 5,000 pairs of nitril gloves Tuesday from Justin and Kevin Kirby to help deal with the growing problem of Coronavirus cases at the facility. The Kirbys, who are in the funeral home business, say they will facilitate getting more gloves to Creekwood if others would like to make a donation. Thirty-three people have been confirmed with COVID-19 at Creekwood, including 26 patients.
This spring young Liam McGinnis donated surgical masks to people in health care and other frontliners instead of asking for birthday presents himself.

Kentucky's Long-Term Care and Other Congregate Facilities Update for Monday shows Creekwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Russellville with 26 residents and 7 staff members with confirmed COVID-19 cases. Two of those diagnosed have died, Creekwood is part of NursingHomes.com. Auburn Healthcare has registered no confirmed cases. Neither has Hearthstone Place in Elkton. Both of those are owned by locally based companies led by Russellville native Nancy Humphries Bolster.

Logan COVID-19 cases grow again

The number of confirmed Conoravirus cases in Logan County as grown again. According to the Barren River Health Department, the county had 53 confirmed cases Friday afternoon. The last three days the total has grown by 15, 10 and 13 from 10 to 53. No details were released. Gov. Andy Beshear said in his daily press conference Friday that one of the new cases in Logan County is a 20-year-old man.

Logan County Fair canceled for 2020

The Logan County Fair board has announced that because of Covid-19 the 2020 Logan County Fair scheduled for June has been canceled. Plans currently are being made for three days of animal shows that will be sprinkled out between now and Oct. 1 whenever restrictions allow. Posts will be made when those dates have been set. A board announcement says, “We plan to try to have next year's fair around the same week of June. We hope that everyone will come out then. Letters will be sent out to our sponsors with more details.”

Logan adds another 10 COVID-19 cases

Ten more confirmed cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Logan County between Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, according to a press release from the Barren River Area Health Department. Than means the number of cases has quadrupled from 10 to 40 in the first week of May. A second death has also been recorded. The health department does not release any details on the age, gender or contact area of those affected. Logan County's COVID-19

confirmed cases multiplying

After staying steady at 8 for weeks, Logan County's total of confirmed COVID-19 cases has suddenly begun multiplying rapidly. The total tripled in the first six days of May, growing from 10 on Thursday, April 30, to 30 on Wednesday, May 6. In fact, the total doubled from 15 to 30 between Tuesday and Wednesday. The Todd County Health Department goes into detail about the demographics and contact area regarding cases it announces, but the Barren River Health Department, which includes Logan County, offers no details. The LoJo has learned that the only confirmed death as a result of coronavirus has been a 79-year-old Russellville resident, who years ago was a nurse at Logan County Hospital. She died at Skyline Hospital in the Nashville area.

Scott's offers Free Dump Day May 23

From Logan County Solid Waste Coordinator Nathan Cockrill: On Free Dump Days, Judge Logan Chick has worked hard with Scott Waste on a plan, and we intend to start those again Saturday, May 23. Here will be some rules on the free day for its return: 1. You must wear a mask or other facial covering. You will be turned away without a mask. 2. Keep social distancing of at least 6 feet from other customers, including when dumping material out of the vehicle. 3. Don't come if you have been recently ill or are a part of a vulnerable population. 4. Follow all instructions of Scott Waste personnel. No free dump day May 9 due to Gov. Andy Beshear's orders still being in effect, but there will be free dump day May 23 from 8 a.m. to noon at 55 Pleasant View Drive in Auburn.
