Concerned Citizens Giveaways

Concerned Citizens of Logan County will give away three different types of items Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of their headquarters at 428 East Fifth Street in Russellville. Available will be sleeves of paper and foam cups, Edge shaving cream and incontinence bed pads. Each patron can choose three items, which are being provided by Feed the Children. Masks and social distancing are required.

Logan students' food pickup Monday

Logan County Schools Summer Meals Program will continue to distribute weekly meals on Mondays through the month of July, and will also continue bus delivery for those who have already been receiving it. The next pick up day is tomorrow, June 29, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at all schools. These meals are for any children 18 and under. If you need any assistance in meal service for your student, please call your school.

Logan County Farmers'

Market open this evening

The Logan County Farmers' Market is underway with more vendors and more vegetables. The market is held on Tuesdays (including today) from 3-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m.-noon. It's located at the UK Ag Complex in the pavilion behind the Logan County Extension Office.

Growth of Logan COVID-19

cases lower, deaths increase

Only five new confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported in the past week. A day after announcing a total of 206 confirmed cases last Monday, June 15, Barren River Health Department lowered that number by one the next day. That total stood unchanged for most of the week, but increased to 210 Monday. On the other hand, the number of people who have died from the virus grew dramatically from 9 to 14.

Concerned Citizens to give

away women's shoes Thursday

Concerned Citizens of Logan County will give away summer shoes for women this Thursday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at 428 East Fifth Street in Russellville (the KP Hall). Shoes are from Feed the Children Avon Shoes and Goods 360 Wal-Mart, sponsored by Ski-Daddy’s. Several tables will be set up outside. There will be a variety of sizes. Three people at a time can go to the tables. People not wearing a mask cannot approach the tables.

Logan's COVID-19 cases grow

At the halfway point of June, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Logan County has grown by 63 and by 5 deaths from the last reporting date in May, including by 15 between Friday and Monday. The current total, according to the Barren River District Health Department, is 206 confirmed cases with 9 deaths.

Carpenter Center opening

delayed for COVID-19

The scheduled opening of the Carpenter Fitness and Aquatic Center has been postponed another two weeks, according to Russellville’s Director of Parks and Recreation Kenny Gregory. The scheduled opening after a three-month shutdown for COVID-19 was this Thursday, June 18, but Gregory says two of the five employees of the Center have tested positive for the virus. A quarantine of the entire staff is required. Gregory says the new scheduled opening date is Tuesday, June 30, depending on state guidelines at that time.

Senator Kerr recommends replacing Jeff Davis statue with Dunnigan

Sen. Alice Lynn Forgy Kerr (R-Lexington) is recommending replacing the vacant spot in the Kentucky State Capitol where the statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis has stood for decades with one of Logan County native Alice Allison Dunnigan. A Hall of Fame, barrier-breaking journalist, Dunnigan has been honored with a statue has been erected at the West Kentucky African American Museum on Sixth and Morgan streets in Russellville. The Davis statue is being moved from Frankfort to the site of the giant Jefferson Davis Monument on the Todd-Christian counties line at Fairview just off U.S. 68-80.

Work on U.S. 68 in Warren set

Work is planned next week on what people in Warren County know as Russellville Road, which is called Bowling Green Road in Logan County. This is the announcement from the Kentucky Transportation Department with a Warren County perspective: U.S. 68 Russellville Road - A project to create a left turn lane from U.S. 68 Russellville Road to Old Tram Road is expected to begin Monday morning. There will be lane closures during the day while crews are working.

Peaceful protest march,

speeches planned today

A peaceful protest has been organized for Sunday afternoon in Russellville. The wearing of masks is encouraged. A march will begin at 4 p.m. at the intersection of Sixth and Morgan streets near the West Kentucky African American Museums. The group will march around Carrico Park Square to the Historic Courthouse. SYNCC Original Freedom Charles Neblett will sing, and then various speakers will make remarks, including Russellville Police Chief Todd Raymer.

NAACP awards scholarship

to Kennedy Nichols

Due to the CORVIF-19 pandemic, the 42nd annual Freedom Fund Banquet scheduled for June 13 is cancelled. The NAACP Branch has announced the award of a $1,000 scholarship to Kennedy Marie Nichols. Kennedy is a graduate of Logan County High School and will attend the University of Kentucky in the fall of 2020. President William Woodard says, “Please join the NAACP in wishing Kennedy the best, and a bright future as she continues to pursue higher education.”

Logan COVID-19 cases

increase by 27, deaths by 1

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Logan County grew by 27 this week, from 143-170. The number of deaths increased from 4 to 5. These statistics are from the Barren River District Health Department, which does not announce anything about the people who are struck by the disease.

LEAD, IDA meetings to be online

The Logan Economic Alliance for Development (LEAD) will hold its   regular monthly meeting Wednesday, June 10, at 7 a.m. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, the public will not be allowed to attend in person. The meeting will be streamed live and can be viewed through the City of Russellville YouTube channel.  The link to the live stream is located at www.russellvilleky.org. The Logan Industrial Development Authority (IDA) will hold its regular monthly meeting following the LEAD meeting using the same format.For more information, please call the LEAD office at 726-9575.

Southern Heights to hold

Summer Supplies Walk

 

A Summer Supplies Walk will be held at Southern Heights Baptist Church this Wednesday, June 3, from 10 a.m.-noon. Families are invited to park their cars and be guided through the parking lot to gather “some fun summer supplies,” including popsicles, water games, crafts, toys, snacks and more. The event is sponsored by the church along with IMPACT Ministries and the Family Resource Centers of Adairville, Auburn, Olmstead and Russellville schools. Southern Heights is located at 1400 Nashville Street.
