Former LCHS cheerleaders
now on college squads
From LCHS Athletic Director Greg Howard: Logan County High School is proud to announce two former LCHS cheerleaders have been selected to area college teams. Aaliyah Townsend is now a part of the Tennessee State Cheer Squad. Tyra Boisseau has been selected to the Western Kentucky All Girls Cheer Team.

Logan schools asking for
donations of child-sized masks
Logan County schools are asking people to donate child-sized masks. Those who can are welcome to make them and those who don't sew are encouraged to donate materials. They should be dropped in boxes at the Logan County Extension Office by Aug. 15.

Russellville Alumni Association to meet
From Greg Owens: The Russellville Alumni Association will hold a meeting on Monday, July 27, at 5 p.m. at the Southern Heights Baptist Church's Fellowship Hall on Nashville Road. We urge all members and interested alumni to attend. We have a few projects in the works and we need everyone's help and input to keep our good work going. Our goal is to support our Panther students past and present.

Logan now has 2nd most
COVID-19 cases in district
With 10 new cases today and 16 the last two days, Logan County has moved into second most confirmed COVID-19 cases in the eight-county Barren River Health District, passing Butler County for the first time. Logan also has the second most deaths (16) and recoveries (195). Bowling Green/ Warren County leads in all categories. On April 30 Butler County had 102 confirmed cases with 23 recovered and 5 deaths while Logan had only eight confirmed cases with 8 recoveries and no deaths. Two weeks later (May 15), totals were Butler 201-53-6 and Logan 82-14-2. A month after that (June 15) the gap had narrowed considerably, showing Butler at 242-118-13 and Logan 206-104-9. Another month has passed, and Logan’s numbers have continued to grow while Butler County’s have leveled off.

Dust Bowl basketball scheduled
The annual 8th of August Dust Bowl basketball tournament will be held at Russellville’s Hampton Park Aug. 8-9. The entry fee is $275 per team with an Aug. 1 registration deadline. A cash prize goes to the winning team. For information or to register a team, contact Patrick Temple at 270-202-3511.

Stuff the Bus to be aired at IGA
Chris McGinnis of WRUS will broadcast live Saturday from 11-1 at Priceless IGA, on Armory Drive, in Russellville's Logan Square. He'll be there to encourage monetary donations to Stuff The Bus Foundation of SOKYduring the Houchens Industries Inc. 2020 Summer of Giving. Everything that is raised here, stays here...and will be distributed to the FRYSCs at the Logan County Schools and Russellville Independent Schools.

Logan golfer Elijah Forbes takes
first place at Kenny Perry course
Elijah Forbes fired scores in the 30s on each side of the golf course to take first place Tuesday at the GO Junior Golf Series stop at Kenny Perry’s Country Creek Course in Franklin. The Logan County senior shot a 2-over 38 on the front nine and a 3-over 39 on the back nine for a final score of 77, which was two shots better than Owensboro’s J.T. Payne in the 16-18 age division. Russellville’s Daylan Roberts shot a round of 85 to finish tied for fifth place.

Cougar Golf Scramble set Saturday
The LCHS Booster Golf Scramble to benefit Cougar golf and soccer will be held this Saturday at Rolling Hills Golf Course from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Playing costs $60 per person, $240 per four-person team. Adairville Principal Selection
Committee to meet Thursday
The Adairville Principal Selection Committee will attempt to choose a new principal for the K-8 school in a called meeting Thursday at 1 p.m. in the school library. The committee has been working on choosing a successor for Kristina Rice, who is now the Auburn principal, but has not yet come to a consensus. The committee is expected to go into closed session for discussion of candidates. If a decision is made, then a public vote on hiring the principal will come in open session.

Death claims Dr. C.H. Mathis

Numerous people are reporting the death of Dr. C.H. Mathis, the dean of Logan County health professionals. Dr. Mathis would have celebrated his 90th birthday this fall. He was still practicing medicine in his Hopkinsville Road office in May after having been hospitalized earlier this spring. He had been hospitalized recently after reportedly falling at home and breaking his hip. Dr. Mathis was not only a veteran but a former Prisoner of War. He is survived by his wife Jane and four grown children. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

Logan adds 20 confirmed COVID-19
cases over holiday weekend
The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 grew dramatically over the Fourth of July weekend. After having had the total reduced by one case two straight days last week, the new total released Monday after a three-day weekend had increased by 20, from 222 to 242. The number of deaths had grown by 2 to 17. The Barren River District Health Department never announces ages or any other demographics of those who die. Two months ago today, the total confirmed cases doubled from 15 to 30 with one death. Many Logan Countians apparently believe the threat of contracting the virus has ended, since a large number of people are not wearing face masks in public.
