Parents, children can 'shop'
for free gifts at Concerned Citizens
From Dorris Vick, Executive Director of Concerned Citizens of Logan County: "With the help of, Feed The Children, Feeding America, Wal-Mart Corporation, Goods 360 and A local Restaurant (Ski Daddy’s), we will sponsor “A December to Remember”. During this event. parents will be allowed to shop for Christmas gifts at The Concerned Citizens for each of the children in their household on Friday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Then, on Saturday, Dec. 5, the children will come and shop for gifts for their parents from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. We will be able to serve as many as 1000 or more these two days.
"We are just trying to make Christmas a little brighter for both the children and their parents who might not otherwise have a Christmas. The event will take place at 428 East 5 St., Russellville. We will practice safety by requiring mask, six feet apart and the event will be held outdoors. So, dress accordingly."

WKU opens men's basketball
season on ESPNU this afternoon
WKU Hilltopper Basketball opens its 102nd season against Northern Iowa at 3:30 p.m. CT today in the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Hilltoppers will open their campaign with three games in as many days – the start of six games in 10 days at two locations on a slate drastically changed by COVID-19. The game will be shown on ESPNU. This will be the Toppers' first game following the death of 97-year-old player, coach and administrator legend John Oldham, who is pictured with former Auburn High School coach Jim Richards, who followed him as coach of the Toppers.

Cougars score 50 points in first half
Despite giving up 14 points in the first 10 minutes of the game, the Logan County Cougars ignited a running clock in the first half of Friday’s Class 4A playoff game against Hopkins County Central. With Ryan Rayno and Davin Yates running for touchdowns and Corbin Rayno connecting with Rooster Woodard on a 49-yard touchdown pass, Coach Todd Adler’s Cougars added 18 points to the 28 they had scored in the first quarter. Lucas Arevalo and Addie Corder each kicked their second extra point before Jaden Sells ran in his second 2-point conversion to make it 50-14 with 2:09 remaining in the half. That’s the 36-point margin needed for the mercy clock. The Cougars will entertain the Hopkinsville-Calloway County winner in next week’s district championship game.

Cougars lead playoff game 35-14
After a first quarter which lasted 47 minutes, the Logan County Cougars lea visiting Hopkins County Central 28-14. Rooster Woodard has scored two touchdowns and Jaden Sells and Maurice Gordon one each. Lucas Arevalo and Addie Corder have each kicked an extra point while Sells has run for a two-pointer. Wyatt Blake has had some long runs, including a 50-yarder. Ryan Rayno added another touchdown on a 14-yard run early in the second quarter. Veteran Cougar linebacker Cade Johnson was injured on the opening kickoff.

Logan County's COVID-19
cases growing dramatically
The count of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Logan County has grown dramatically overnight and over the past week. According to the Barren River District Health Department, Logan County had 1,135 cases Friday afternoon. That is a record 47 new cases since Thursday and a staggering increase of 151 in the past week, an average of 21.6 new confirmations a day. Also growing dramatically is the number of active cases. That has grown from 819 on Nov. 13 to 911 today, Aug. 20—almost 100 more people who are infected than a week ago. Active cases are determined by adding the number of those recovered to those who have died subtracted from total confirmations.

Eight Cougars named All-WKC
among large area schools
Eight Logan County Football Cougars have been named All-SKY Conference in the Large School division. First teamers are linebacker Zack Yates, defensive lineman Logan Gipson, offensive lineman Thomas Kash and receiver Anthony ‘Rooster’ Woodard. On the second team are defensive back Aaron Hinton, running back Wyatt Blake, offensive lineman Jonah Oliver and receiver Jaden Sells.

Todd County Schools are switching from the Face-to-Face format to Non Traditional Instruction beginning Tuesday and lasting at least through Friday, Dec. 4 because of health concerns, WRUS News reports.

Fulton County decides to forfeit game at RHS
From Russellville High School Principal Ben Bruni: Fulton County has notified RHS that they are forfeiting their first round football game in the interest of health and safety. RHS will now advance to the second round where they will play at Crittenden County on Friday, Nov. 27.

Tickets for RHS playoff games for sale
Tickets for Russellville's home football playoff game Friday will be available only in advance. They will be sold Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Russellville High School. No tickets will be sold at the gate. The Panthers will entertain Fulton County, The winner will go to Crittenden County the following week for the district championship game.

Hughes and Holloway win contested Logan races
Logan County joined the state of Kentucky in voting overwhelmingly for President Donald Trump and Sen. Mitch McConnell in Tuesday's 2020 General Election. Meanwhile in heavily contested races in Logan County, Mayor Mike Hughes was reelected in Auburn and Ethan Holloway was elected to represent the Olmstead school district on the Logan County Board of Education, marking the first time in many decades that a Dawson will not be a member of that board. (Johnny Dawson did not seek reelection.) Eliminated in city council races were Douglas Dasch in Auburn and Albert Head in Russellville.

Panthers hold on at Fulton County 21-20
Had the Russellville Panthers not held on for their 21-20 win at Hickman on Halloween Eve, they would have been haunted by ghosts of penalties incurred and opportunities squandered. Coach Mikie Benton's Panthers scored 21 points against Futlon County Friday in the first 18 minutes of the game. When the Pilots scored on a touchdown pass with no time remaining at halftime, they pulled within 21-18. A pass interference call on the Panthers on the conversion, allowed the home team to come within in a point at the intermission. Both teams had ample opportunities to score in the second half but couldn't do it. RHS kept intercepting Pilot passes, which often were overturned on penalties. But the Panthers (4-3) won and now will host these same Pilots in the opening round of the playoffs on Nov. 13.

Final session of Farmers' Market Saturday
The final session of the Logan County Farmers' Market will be held Saturday morning at the UK Ag Complex adjacent to the Farmers' Market Pavilion. Some summer vegetables including tomatoes, greenbeans, peas, squash, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini and potatoes will be available along with fall items like cabbage, broccoli, sweet potatoes, pumpkins and gourds. The Bread Lady (Kris Partlow) will have her goodies available, and Elaine Turner will offer jellies and preserves. This will also be the last time to use Senior Vouchers, since they can't be accepted at home markets. The market is located behind the Logan County Extension office and begins at 7:30 a.m.

Panthers head to Fulton County for crucial district game
The Russellville Panthers are favored on the road Friday night to pick up an important district win, despite a disappointing performance against Crittenden County Friday. RHS was never competitive in a 47-6 district loss to Crittenden County last week in a game that had been a toss-up going in. The Panthers (3-3) have a KHSAA RPI of .56739 while the Pilots (1-5) have an RPI of .43079. The winner of this game most likely will get a home game in the playoffs against the other. The game will be carried live on WRUS.

Lady Cougars win regional opener
Logan County swept Barren County 25-7, 25-12, 25-9 in the opening round of the 13t4th Region Volleyball Tournament Tuesday at Russell County High School. Now Coach Caleb Sheffield’s team (14-9) takes on Bowling Green (16-7) at 8 p.m. tonight, also at Russell County. Greenwood (9-6) and Russell County (9-9) are the other semifinalists. BGH (.62470) and the Lady Cougars (.56267) have the top two remaining RPIs in the tournament. The finals will be played Thursday at 6 p.m. Logan has not posted individual statistics for the past five matches.

Final Tuesday session of
Farmers' Market this afternoon
The final Tuesday session of the Logan County Farmers' Market will be held today, beginning at 3 p.m. It is located in the UK Ag Pavilion behind the Logan County Extension Office. This is the 22nd straight Tuesday of the market. Customers will be able to find a mixture of summer and fall vegetables and fruits for sale. The final day to use Senior Vouchers is Saturday morning. They can't be accepted at home markets.

Already very ill, Larry Forgy contracts COVID-19
Sen. Alice Lynn Forgy Kerr has asked for prayers for her brother and fellow Lewisburg High School graduate Larry Forgy, who has been diagnosed with COVID-19. Kerr told The LoJo last week that the Lexington attorney has been in poor health most of this year and was in intensive care last week. His wife Fran died 10 days ago. Forgy, 81, is a former vice president of the University of Kentucky and a member of Gov. Louie Nunn’s cabinet in the 1960s. He was the Republican nominee for governor in 1995, narrowly losing to Gov. Paul Patton.

Cougars win at Calloway 14-6
The Logan County Cougars built a 14-6 lead at Calloway County in an important district game and then held throughout the second half. Coach Todd Adler's team is 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the district. Chris McGinnis of WRUS reports that the win clinched the top seed in the district playoffs for LCHS, which has another district game remaining next Saturday (Halloween) at noon at Hopkins County Central.

Logan exceeds 700 confirmed COVID-19 cases
By adding 21 new confirmed cases between Friday and Monday, Logan County surpassed the 700 plateau of COVID-19 cases Monday. According to the Barren River District Health Department, Logan's numbers grew from 692 Friday to 713 Monday. Since 583 who has the virus have recovered and 30 others have died, Logan now has 100 active cases. The peak had been expected because the coronavirus is ramping up all over the United States and a number of local families went on vacation to other states during fall break.

Chandlers cookbook features recipies from local favorites
Chandler’s School is having a cookbook sale. These will be pre-order. The Chandler’s School Cookbooks are $10 each and will include a short history of the school and over 300 recipes including cafeteria recipes from Eva Sanders, Helen Ashby and Audrey Webb. Cookbooks will also include recipes from Sheriff Stephen Stratton, Jailer Phil Gregory, Judge Logan Chick, former magistrate Jo Orange, tax official Sue Carol Marshall, the late Vivian Neagle and Dr. Paul Kerr. These are a wonderful collection of recipes submitted by alumni, students, staff, family members, community members & some of the school cafeteria “favorite recipes” from years ago. All proceeds go to purchasing outdoor picnic tables through the Chandler’s PTO. Contact Chandler’s School at 270-542-4139 for ordering information. Cougars shocking Hoptown 17-0 at half
With their second quarterback of the season down with an injury, the Logan County Cougars have turned to a pair of highly experienced and versatile seniors to run their offense, and it's paying off beautifully. With Wyatt Blake and Anthony 'Rooster' Woodard sharing quarterbacking duties, the Cougars have piled up 225 yards total offense while the defense has held the Hopkinsville Tigers to 18 total yards on the way to a 17-0 lead at intermission. Blake has run for 118 yards and a touchdown and has thrown a 47-yard touchdown pass to Woodard. Another senior, Zach Yates, is joining the offensive line in blocking effectively for the runners. And a fourth senior, Luis Arvelo, has kicked two extra points and a 22-yard field goal. The game is being played at LCHS and being carried live on WRUS' many platforms.

The Logan County Cougars (1-2), who have played only one game in the last three weeks because of the coronavirus, entertain district rival Hopkinsville (2-1), at 7 p.m. tonight in an important district game. The Russellville Panthers (2-2) are heavily favored on the road at Caverna (0-4), which is losing by an average of 54-10. The Cougar game will be carried live over WRUS (104.9 FM, 610 AM and on the internet). The RHS game will be recorded and aired on WRUS Saturday shortly after 1 p.m.

Hometown Manor holding Pumpkins Decorating Challenge
Hometown Manor Assisted Living in Russellville is holding its first Pumpkin Decorating Challenge. Entries are not due until next Friday, Oct. 22, but participants should register with Melinda Page by this Friday, Oct. 16, at 270-427-8969. After the decorated pumpkins are brought in, the residents of Hometown Manor will vote and the winners announced on Monday, Oct. 26.

FFA Alumni to grill during Farmers' Market Saturday
Agricultural products at their very best will be available Saturday morning at the Logan County Extension Office/UK Ag Complex when the FFA Alumni grilling team is in action along with the Logan County Farmers' Market. The Farmers' Market runs in the back pavillion while FFA will be turning out delicious meat sandwiches and sides in drive-through fashion. At the Farmers' Market, customers can choose from pumpkins, gourds, turnip greens, tomatoes, peas (both shelled and whole), greenbeans (both broken and whole), peppers, squash, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, jellies and preserves, sunflowers, and great eats from The Bread Lady. The Farmers' Market begins at 7:30 a.m. and the FFA Grill at 8.

Panthers impressive in 41-29 win
Leading by only five points three times, the Russellville Panthers were impressive in a 41-29 win at Edmonson County Friday. Trailing 9-0 early in the second quarter, Coach Mikie Benton's team scored 21 points in the second quarter and another 20 in the second half to run its record to 2-2. Javori Gamble rushed 13 times for 228 yards and 3 touchdowns on runs of 80, 55 and 7 yards. Chevis Elliott sped for a 75-yard touchdown when the Panthers really needed it. Quarterback Lennon Ries threw a touchdown pass to Jaquis Todd and bulled his way in to the end zone with the clinching touchdown. Dustin Brown kicked five conversions and boomed several punts and kickoffs. The defense made several impressive stands, including withstanding a successful Wildcat onside kick to start the second half. The Panthers rushed for 372 yards, compiled 444 yards total offense, and held the Wildcats to 257 total yards.

Panthers lead Wildcats 21-9 at half
After managing only 11 yards total offense in the first quarter and trailing 9-0 early in the second quarter, the Russellville Panthers piled up 219 yards and 21 points in the second quarter to take a 21-9 lead into the intermission at Edmonson County Friday. Jovari Gamble ran for an 80-yard touchdown on the first RHS play of the quarter and for a 7-yard score on the last play of the half. Jaquis Todd caught a 12-yard TD pass from Lennon Ries in between. Dustin Brown kicked all three conversions. The Panther defense held the Wildcats to 27 yards in the second quarter and 81 for the half. John Brett Reynolds & Chris McGinnis are calling the game live on WRUS (104.9 FM).

No Cougar game tonight
Logan Athletic Director Greg Howard has announced that no opponent could be found to come to Cougar Field tonight following Madisonville-North Hopkins' cancellation Thursday. He says ticket payments via phone app are being refunded, but it may take up to 10 days. This is the second straight week the Cougars have been idled by COVID-19 News.

M-NH cancels Friday's football game with Cougars
From LCHS Athletic Director Greg Howard: Logan County High School was informed by officials at Madisonville North Hopkins early Thursday evening that due to their county going in red they would not be able to play us tomorrow night. Our football staff is still looking for an opponent for tomorrow night if possible. We will keep everyone posted. Refunds through GoFan will be worked out and communicated to our fans.

Injury-plagued game goes to Glasgow
Each team lost of one of its best players, but Glasgow's star had helped the Scotties build a lead at Logan County Friday on the way to a 19-11 win. Glasgow quarterback John Carter Myers, who has spent much of his life living in Logan County, threw a 45-yard pass to set up a Scottie touchdown, one that he scored himself on a 10-yard run. He then made a huge tackle on Logan's Maurice Gordon. But Myers was injured early in the second quarter and didn't return to the game. Defensive standout Jacob Moore scored a Cougar safety to make the Glasgow lead 7-2 at halftime. Then Cougar star defender Zack Yates, who was the team's Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore and who had carried the ball most in the first half, suffered a chest injury early in the third quarter and sat out most of the second half. Sophomore quarterback Corbin Rayno in his first start completed five passes to Rooster Woodard for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Although The LoJo has not been notified, reports are that Fulton County has postponed tonight's game against visiting Russellville because of COVID-19 concerns. The game will need to be played at a later date, since it's a district contest.

Drive-Thru Flu Vaccine Clinic set for Logan
The Barren River District Health Department is hosting Drive-Thru Flu Vaccine Clinics. Vaccines are free with insurance, and $30 without insurance (cash or check only). No appointment necessary. The one in Logan County will be held Thursday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. until vaccines run out. The site will be the Logan County Extension Office.

Concerned Citizens holding yard sale
Concerned Citizens of Logan County are holding a yard sale this weekend, starting today. Concerned Citizens headquarters is located on East Fifth Street in Russellville. Executive Director Dorris Vick expects the sale to last through Saturday. Funds raised will be used for the group's charitable outreaches.
