Panthers beat LCHS in OT despite Rooster's 35 points

Despite giving up 35 points to former teammate Rooster Woodard and trailing much of the game, the Russellville Panthers shut out Logan County in overtime for a 56-50 district win Friday in the Mullen-Meguiar Clash of the Cats. Woodard scored 22 of his points in the first half and hit a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime, but Russellville's Jovari Gamble shut him down much of the second half before fouling out and Jaquis Todd made big play after big play late in the game. Todd finished with 24 points and Xavier Coleman added 12. Free throw shooting was atrocious for both teams with RHS hitting 10 of 25 and the Cougars 1 of 8.

Lady Panthers win Clash

The host Lady Panthers trailed Logan County only twice in the Clash of the Lady Cats Friday by 3-0 and 6-5 counts. The Lady Cougars fell behind 30-19 midway through the third quarter, cut the lead to 33-27 and then lost to RHS 47-36. Amiyah Collier led Russellville with 13 points and Chloe Whitescarver added 12. Anastasia Dowlen dominated the boards. Gracie Borders led LCHS with 13 points but no one else scored over 6.

WRUS to feature LoJo's Jim Turner

on 50 years of sports journalism

Jim Turner, editor of The Logan Journal, had his first column published 50 years ago today as sports editor of the News-Democrat & Leader and The Logan Leader. He spent 31 years with the print newspapers, 5 as sports director of WRUS, 2 with Logan & Beyond, and the last 12 with The LoJo. He has also taught 9 years at Russellville High School, 5 at Logan County High School, and 12 at WKU, and he is in his 12th year at SKYCTC, almost always while writing sports at the same time. Turner will be the guest of Don Neagle on WRUS' Feedback (610 AM, 104.9 FM, www.wrushradio.com) at 9:05 Friday morning to discuss his career in sportswriting.

Panthers shoot their way to win over Caldwell County

With Jaquis Todd and Chevis Elliott leading the way, the Russellville Panthers shot the basketball beautifully in a 72-63 win over Caldwell County Jan. 19. Todd hit 7 of 10 two-pointers and 2 of 4 three-pointers on the way to 25 points. Elliott hit both of his field goal attempts and 10 of 11 free throws for 14 points. Coach Carlos Quarles’ team went 20 of 34 from short range, 3 of 6 from behind the arc, and 20 of 34 free throws. The Tigers hit 14 of 22 from two-point and 11 of 17 free throws, but got only 8 of 24 three-pointers in the loss.

Olmstead wins Middle School Academic Cup

PQ Perez won first place in two events to lead Olmstead to first place in the Academic Team Middle Grades Governor’s Cup competition. Third places went to Ashley McIntosh, Eli Warden and Luke Azzinnaro. Earning fourth places were McKenna Mayhew, and Anthony Azzinnaro. Taking fifth places were Kinley Durbin and Anthony Azzinnaro. Their events show in the chart. Kerri Hayes is the coach.

Lewisburg School able to stay on face-to-face schedule

Lewisburg Elementary School has several first grade students and teachers in quarantine. Originally, the first grade was going to be moved back to virtual learning for two weeks. After working with other Lewisburg faculty members, administrators are able to offer half days in-person for any first graders not in quarantine. Lewisburg also has several eighth grade students and teachers in quarantine, but administrators were able to secure substitute teachers. Therefore, Lewisburg eighth grade will not be moving to virtual. Lewisburg School's administration and teachers have been in contact with the parents.

Concerned Citizens giving away heaters to qualified people

Concerned Citizens of Logan County will give away a limited number of electric heaters. Recipients must 1) receive SSI, welfare, food stamps, subsidized housing or other federal government assistance, 2) not have central heat and air, 3) agree to use heaters at the place of residence listed on the application and 4) provide proof of federal assistance. Those qualified can call 270-725-8271 Monday through Thursday to give information. The heaters are through 365 Goods-Walmart.

Jacob Naylor stars in season opener

Former Russellville star multi-sport athlete Jacob Naylor finally got to play his team's college basketball season opener this week in a pandemic-marred season. Naylor scored 22 points as Roane State defeated nationally 22nd ranked Columbia state this week. According to his coach at RHS, Rex Booth, Naylor scored 11 points "down the stretch," hitting a pair of 3-pointers, a couple of 2-pointers and 4 free throws on 4 attempts.

School personnel vaccinations planned

From Russellville Superintendent Larry Begley: I met with Logan Memorial Hospital staff and Logan County Schools officials this morning to discuss vaccinations. They are in and approximately 70 percent of our staff has signed up to get the first round administered tomorrow. We are thankful for this group of leaders and the priority they have placed on helping us keep our community healthy at school." Logan County School officials haven't released any information on this.

Primary Academy students to receive food deliveries

With the Russellville Primary Academy in virtual learning for at least two weeks because of COVID 19 protocol, there is concern for students needing food. Transportation Director Michelle White has made the following announcement: "We will be delivering meals Tuesday at 9:30 to Pre/K students. Hopefully by Tuesday afternoon we will have everything set up so we can deliver two days worth on Wednesday, and then Friday we will deliver enough for the weekend. The following week will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Delivery will be at 9:30 each time."

Tickets for the Clash of the Cats to be limited

From Russellville High School Principal Ben Bruni: There will be NO GENERAL SALES tickets for the Jan. 29 Logan County Clash of the Cats game. Tickets will not be available to the public. RHS will stream the game live via Facebook Live. Due to the circumstances brought on by COVID and COVID related needs, RHS will unfortunately be limiting ticket availability considerably. Logan County High School will be allotted tickets for their players and school members. RHS players and cheerleaders will be allotted a limited number of tickets as well. More ticket information will be made available to players and personnel the week of the game.

Logan games to be streamed Friday

Local teams drop close twinbills in 27-hour span

The four high school basketball teams from the Land of Logan lost the closest of games in a 27-hour span in gyms less than five miles apart Monday and Tuesday night. The outcome of every game was still in doubt in the final 30 seconds, and each one ended in favor of the visitors. In fact, the Cougars led Allen County-Scottsville with less than half a second remaining. In the All A regional Monday, the Glasgow Lady Scotties won 45-39 and the Scottie lads won 65-62. At LCHS Tuesday, AC-S' girls escaped 42-39 and the Patriots 43-42. The LoJo will have detailed stories on each game this week.

Lady Panthers romp past Trinity

Several Lady Panthers contributed as Russellville romped past visiting Whitesville Trinity 68-41 Saturday. Anastasia Dowlen scored 16 points and had 6 rebounds. Hitting 2 of 4 three-pointers, Chloe Whitescarver scored 12 points, as did Amiyah Collier. Brinley Mason went 2 of 3 from long range, scoring 10 points and adding 6 rebounds. Macaria Hines scored 6 points, mostly on 4 of 6 free throw shooting. Aliyah Kennedy had a team-high 10 rebounds and scored 6 points. Jasmine Patel added 4 points.

Primary class shut down for COVID at Stevenson

From Russellville Superintendent Larry Begley: I was notified about 1 p.m. today by our district health coordinator that we have a staff member at the Primary Academy that has tested positive. As a result, we will have that staff member and 13 students in quarantine protocol. I can not properly express my gratitude for the efforts made by our entire staff for the plans and actions to keep our kids and staff as safe as possible. Our staff is nothing short of amazing given the circumstances.

Demolition begins on Barnes-Campbell Hall

For over half a century, WKU students have spent their underclass years as residents of Hugh Poland, Bemus Lawrence and Barnes Campbell dormitories on what was still known as Russellville Road when they were built. Now demolition is underway to make room for The First Year Village, which includes the construction of two new residence halls, Normal Hall and Regents Hall. These new halls will utilize space in a way that enables deep faculty and peer engagement around important ideas that connect directly to student success and learning. Demolition of Barnes Campbell Hall began today.

First four Cougar games canceled for COVID

All four Logan County boys basketball games which were scheduled this week to start the season have been canceled because of COVID. Coach Nathan Thompson's team was to play South Warren, Edmonson County, Martin Count and Clarksville Christian through Saturday. Athletic Director Greg Howard said most of the Kentucky opponents either had a coach or player with a confirmed case of the virus. He said he has chosen not to play teams from Tennessee where the pandemic is raging. The first Cougar game still on the schedule currently is a girl-boy doubleheader with visiting Allen County-Scottsville next Tuesday, Jan. 12. Logan adds almost 100 COVID cases over long weekend

Logan County added 98 confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the New Years holiday break. The total announced in the county by the Barren River Area Health Department Monday, Jan. 4, is 1,795 with 39 deaths. On Wednesday, Dec. 30, the total was 1,697 with 37 deaths. A month earlier, on Dec. 4, totals were 1,302 cases with 35 deaths. That's an increase of 493 cases in the month of 37.9 percent. Active cases (total minus those recovered and deaths) increased from 217 to 260 in these five days and by 106 over the month (68.8 percent).

Auntie Annie's Food Truck to aid RHS Band

Auntie Annie's Food Truck will be set up Tuesday from noon to 6 p.m. at Lost River Creamery, 245 Hopkinsville Road, Russellville. Proceeds will go to the Russellville Marching Panthers band. Antie Annie's is known for its pretzels.

Death claims original Cougar football coach Steve Eans

Steve Eans, who was the founding coach of Logan County Cougar football, was found deceased in his Friendship Road home outside Auburn Wednesday. He lived alone and had experienced health problems in recent years. He would have been 66 in January. Eans spent a year teaching the game of football to young students--many of them farm boys--when Logan County High School began as a consolidation of five high schools which had never fielded football teams. He coached them as a team the next five years and taught industrial arts at the school for 31 years, from Aug. 16, 1982, until May 28, 2013. Coach Eans was the last member of the original LCHS faculty to end his tenure on the staff. Mr. Eans is survived by his daughters, Leslie and Stevie. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

A ribbon cutting will be held Tuesday, Dec. 22, at noon for Family Liquors on North Main Street in Russellville. It will be conducted by the Logan County Chamber of Commerce.

Larry Begley named Russellville superintendent

Larry Joe Begley, who has been director of district wide services in the Floyd County schools, was officially elected and introduced as the new superintendent of Russellville Independent Schools at Tuesday night's meeting. He will follow Interim Superintendent Leon Smith and former superintendent Bart Flener in the position. He was accompanied by his wife and some of their children in Russellville Tuesday. Prestonsburg is the county seat of Floyd County, which is located in Eastern Kentucky adjacent to Pike County and near the West Virginia and Virginia state lines. There are 13 schools and 6,050 students in the system.

Russellville to name new superintendent

The Russellville Board of Education plans to elect officially and then formally introduce its new superintendent at Tuesday evening's meeting. The process of selecting a new superintendent has been underway since this summer when then-superintendent Bart Flener resigned to become executive director of the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative. Former Superintendent Leon Smith, who has continued to live in Russellville since his retirement, has been serving as interim superintendent. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the former Technical Center, which is located across East Seventh Street from the Central Office in the former location of Russellville Middle School.

Dr. James McCaslin, provost of Southcentral Kentucky Community & Technical College, will appear on Feedback on WRUS this morning at 9:05 as the guest of LEAD Executive Director Tom Harned. He will talk about SKYCTC and the high quality educational opportunities the community college has to offer at a much lower cost than universities and private colleges. Students earn Associate of Arts, Associate of Science and Associate of Applied Science degrees which qualify them for specific job skills or eliminate the need to take general education courses at a higher cost at four-year schools.
