Franklin holds off Cougars
4-2 for district baseball title
Macon Barrow, who had the game-winning RBI in a 6-5 win over Todd Central on Saturday, hit a 2-run homer (his fifth of the season) in the seventh inning to give his Logan County Cougars a chance to beat Franklin-Simpson in the 13th District Tournament finals Monday at Russellville. Kruise Newman had led off the inning with a single when Barrow went deep, and F-S' lead slipped to 4-2. But Wildcat ace Dalton Fiveash struck out the Cougars' Chance Sweeney & Wyatt Blake to make the Wildcats district champs. Starting pitcher Blake Woods walked on a ful-count in between. Blake fouled off two 2-2 pitches, but Fiveash made him his 11th strikeout victim to end the game. Dawson Owens had hit a 2-run homer for F-S in the fourth inning. Coach Matthew Wilhite's Cats (20-13) will play a home regional game Saturday while Coach Ethan Meguiar's Cougars (19-14) will have to play at a district champ's home field.

Cougars edge Todd to advance
Beginning in the early 1970s with Greg Shelton playing for Lewisburg and continuing with Ethan Meguiar starting for Logan County's state quarterfinalist team in 1989 to them coaching against each other in both the 2000 district and regional championship games. and then facing each other in many other tournament games with Shelton coaching Franklin-Simpson, Russellville and now Todd Central, the two Hall of Fame coaches have been an important part of 13th District Baseball history. It happened again Saturday night with Meguiar's Cougars edging Shelton's Rebels 6-5 in the second semifinal. The Cougars now advance to Monday's district championship game against F-S at Kelly Russell Field.

Lady Panthers bounce back to beat F-S, reach region
A very young Russellville softball team appeared to be on the verge of ending its season. After a great start, the Lady Panthers were playing without injured senior Chloe Whitescarver, had lost five games in a row, and were facing a Franklin-Simpson team in the district tournament which had beaten them twice. Instead, Coach Ryan Davenport's team bounced back Saturday night to beat visiting F-S 10-7. The victory sends them into next Tuesday's 13th District championship game against Logan County and into next Saturday's regional tournament. The Lady Panthers got four home runs from underclassmen--two by sophomore Amiyah Collier and one each by sophomore Jaylah Kees and freshman Madison Penrod.

Top seeds advance in 13th District
The top seeds were winners in the opening round games of the 13th District Tournaments being played at Russellville High School today. The Logan County Lady Cougars beat Todd Central 16-8 to start the softball tournament. Franklin-Simpson eliminated Russellville 10-0 in baseball. Statistics are not yet available. The baseball championship game will be played Monday evening, while the Lady Cougars await the Russellville vs. Franklin-Simpson winner Tuesday. Isaac Stanley earns archery honor
Logan County High School's Isaac Stanley has been named the 4th Region Athletic Directors Association Male Archer of the Year. The Cougar sophomore was the KHSAA co-state archery champion this year.

Chamber's Annual Dinner slated June 29
The Logan County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Dinner, which has the theme “Back to Business Around the World,” will be held Tuesday, June 29, at the Logan County Extension Office. Invitations are being sent out to Chamber members. Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. with the program starting at 6:30. The Annual Dinner is usually held in early March but was postponed because of the pandemic.

for Class 1A state track in 3 events
From Russellville track coach Mikie Benton: Long night, but well worth it! A lot of work has been put in, and it was showcased last night at the regional meet! A few spots guaranteed to State for Jermani Morris; the freshman showed out last night with three second place finishes! Jaquis Todd, Chaun Cheaney, A.J. Woodard, Rolando Pacheco, Henry Graves, and Aubreanna Evans all had solid performances that we have to play the waiting game on until June 5 when all regions have run to see if they qualify for state, but we are confident that they will make it!

Chloe Whitescarver undergoes
surgery for multiple jaw breaks
Chloe Whitescarver's spring roller coaster ride took a sudden downturn Monday. Only a few days after signing to play softball for Brescia University, the Russellville senior passed out at work, landing hard on her face. She had to have multiple stitches in her chin at Logan Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Skyline Medical Center near Nashville. According to her mother, Cass Whitescarver, she was to have surgery Monday evening to repair the breaks. She is expected to have her mouth wired shut for at least two weeks, which most likely will keep her out of postseason play. She is expected to stay at Skyline a couple of more days for tests on why she fainted. Earlier this spring, she suffered a hamstring injury that sidelined her temporarily, but she was honored last week as the Lady Panthers' lone senior on a 20-12 team. She is the program's all-time home run leader.

Auburn Tourism's Party on the Square on June 12 will feature the Jazz and R&B group Tyrone Dunn & Kinfoke. Admission is free but bring lawnchairs. Concessions will be available for sale. It begins at 7 p.m.

Greg Shelton coaches thousandth high school baseball win
Lewisburg native Greg Shelton has recorded his 1000th win as a high school baseball coach while heading the Todd Central Rebels this season. After graduating from LHS in 1971, Shelton had a solid career as a college relief pitcher at WKU while coaching Post 29 American Legion baseball in Russellvile in the summers. After graduation, he became the head coach at Franklin-Simpson High School, a position he held for 29 years. He coached the Wildcats to a state championship and another Final Four, earned Hall of Fame honors, and saw the F-S baseball field named for him. He then had a successful run as the coach of Beech High School in Sumner County, Tenn. After retirement there, he came home to coach Russellville for three seasons, winning 65 games in three seasons. (The Panthers have won only 30 games in the six seasons since he left.) Shelton left for Christian County and now is coaching the Rebels, who are 19-9 this year. Long-time Russellville councilman Jack Whipple dies
Long-time Russellville Councilman Jack J. Whipple, 78, of Russellville, passed away May 19, 2021 at Field Stone Place in Clarksville after a long illness. Mr. Whipple was retired as a drafting engineer for Rockwell Manufacturing Company and its successors. He was the son of the late Rockwell founding plant manager Harry Whipple. His mother, the late Vonnie Whipple, was involved in countless community activities. In addition to city government, Jack was a leader in obtaining the funding for City-County Park over 50 years ago, was the first president of sanctioned Russellville (now Logan County) Little League, was involved in community service activities as a founding member and officer of Russellville Optimist Club, and served for decades as official clock operator for RHS basketball. He is survived locally by a first cousin, Fred Whipple. Funeral services will be Saturday in Russellvile.

Tickets required for Whitescarver signing
Wednesday's scheduled 2:30 p.m. signing for Russellville's Chloe Whitescarver to attend Brescia University and play softball there has previously been announced on The LoJo. Principal Ben Bruni and Athletic Director/Softball Coach Ryan Davenport have notified us that tickets are required for the signing and can be reserved by contacting Davenport at Russellville Middle School. Davenport notes, "Chloe joins the Bearcat Softball team with a .375 career batting average in high school, 75 career RBIs, and as RHS’ record holder for home runs in softball with 18 (and counting!). She is a Softball All-District selection several times over as well as being a standout multi-year starter for the Panther Volleyball and Basketball teams. Chloe is the daughter of Shane and Cass Whitescarver and her younger sister Milly (8th Grade) is a member of the Panther Softball team as well."

Logan Golf Scramble set June 5
The Logan County High School golf teams and the boys soccer team will host the LCHS Golf Scramble Saturday, June 5, at Rolling Hills Golf Course, beginning at 8 a.m. with registration starting an hour earlier. The cost is $240 per team of $60 per player. Hole sponsorships are available, starting at $100. Lunch will be provided. For information or to register, contact Coach Drew Teel.

Free paper shredding offered at library
The shred truck will be back at Logan County Public Library on Saturday, May 22, from 9-11 a.m. Everyone is welcome to bring their documents for free shredding, but there is a limit of five bags/boxes per vehicle. The company has changed names (from LandShark to Underground Vault & Storage), but the event will still work the same way.

Jonah Oliver to run track for Campbellsville
Logan County High School has announced that Jonah Oliver will be signing his letter of intent to further his track and academic career at Campbellsville University. Jonah's signing will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, May, 18, at 3:30 p.m. in the LCHS library.

Whitescarver to sign with Brescia
Russellville multi-sport standout Chloe Whitescarver will hold a public signing to play softball for Brescia University Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at deGraffenried Auditorium. Her basketball and softball coach, Ryan Davenport, says, “She did this the non-traditional way. No travel ball, no camps, and she didn't start playing softball until she was in the 6th grade. Shows you how hard she works and how naturally talented she is. Above of all she has a 4.0 GPA, tremendous work ethic, and respect for her coaches and teachers. Her talents and work ethic have earned her a $70,000 scholarship.” Whitescarver has had to mss some softball games recently because of a hamstring injury.

Carriage House Vineyard to host
“Night at the Museum” Saturday
A fun fundraiser for the Auburn Museum will be held this Saturday. Carriage House Vineyard will host “Night at the Museum” at their Longview Lane location in the Auburn area. Admission to see the movie is $5 per ticket and can be purchased at the door. Popcorn and beverages will be available to purchase. All of the ticket sales and 25 percent of drink and snack sales will be donated to the Auburn Historical Society and Museum. Seating begins at 6:30 p.m., and the movie will start 30 minutes later.

Three Logan roads closed for high waters
The first two reports issued by the Kentucky Transportation Department's District 3 Wednesday about flood waters over area roads did not include any from Logan County. By late afternoon, however, three Logan roads had been added--KY 107 - Closed at mile point 3, KY 1153 - closed at mile point 4.2 and KY 1151 - closed at mile point 6.9. The department does not include the names of roads in its releases.

Logan sports events canceled today
The Middle School Baseball Clash of the Cats has been postponed from today because of rain, Logan County Athletic Director Greg Howard has announced. Also the softball game with Christian County has been canceled.
