The names of 4,127 people appeared during the third year of publication of The Logan Journal. Of that group, 1,268 were named in more than one story, bringing the total to 6,827 names. The LoJo came into existence on Feb. 1, 2009, so Year Three ran from Feb. 1, 2011 to Jan. 31, 2012.

All of these numbers come from my statistics obsession that almost forced me into being an accountant before I realized what I really wanted was to figure earned run averages and free throw percentages, not assets and liabilities.

And that love of sports, along with the number of games played in the Land of Logan, means that those whose name appeared in the most stories were athletes and coaches. Of the Top 25, all but were one were involved directly in sports. The other, radio personality/evangelist Lon Sosh, has a rich sports background, culminating in his being inducted into the Russellville Alumni Sports Hall of Fame just before The LoJo year ended,

The top three in terms of number of stories were Logan County High athletes. Leading the way with 24 different stories was senior Twin Lancaster, who had a good football season and was named Fourth Region boys basketball Player of the Year. Following him was three-sport Cougar Avrey Collier, whose best sport is track, with 21. Right behind him was Matt Harper, who started the year as an eighth grader at Olmstead where his team won the middle school basketball tournament. Before he finished middle school, he was a varsity starter for the Cougars in baseball. Then this winter, he was on the LCHS basketball varsity.

The next four top storymakers were from Russellville High School. They were golf and basketball coach Dennis Pardue with 19 and basketball players Jordan Kennedy, Davis Pardue and Amber Sydnor with 17 each. All of this came a month before the season ended. Sydnor was the most mentioned female subject.

Rounding out the Top 10 were LCHS athletes Torin Graham, Jaylin Jones and John Logan Dockins along with D.J. Quarles, who was the top story subject at the end of two years and still found his name in 16 stories, even though he spent half the year as a walk-on football player at the University of Kentucky.

Also in the Top 25 (actually 28 counting ties) were Barrett Croslin, Lon Sosh, Coach Harold Tackett, Dustin Cartas, Ryan Harper, Sye Head, Coach Scot MacAllister, Barrett Rogers, Sajuan Watkins, Coach Dedra Adler, Meg Brown, Evan Harris, Aratan Martin, Coach John Myers, Markita Pheal, Noah Thomas and Ben Wright.

Gov. Steve Beshear, who was reelected in 2011, just missed the Top 25 by one story. Also near the top were non-sports figures Donna Gholson and Rep. Martha Jane King.
