Logan cross country teams run at East
Ten Logan County cross country runners competed in the Warren East Raider Twilight Run Saturday. The teams have no seniors and six of those who ran are eligible for middle school events. The top finishing Cougar was junior Sam Larson, who placed 49th among 196 male runners with a 19:13.03. Other Cougars, in order of finish, were eighth graders Garrett Lawson & Wyatt Lennon, and freshman Landon Crocker. Freshman Adison Connelly led the Lady Cougars by placing 68th among 153 female runners with a 25:02.64. Placing behind her, in order, were sophomore Hailey Burgess, sixth grader Avery Thompson, freshman Ella Lawson, and sophomores Neoma Masterman & Lexus McMurray.

Local families highly interested
in Little League World Series
Two Logan County families have felt a close connection to this year's Little League World Series. The runner-up team, Ohio, had lost to the Warren South team in multi-state Great Lakes competition preliminaries, but when South was scheduled to play Ohio for a trip to Williamsport, Penn., the Kentucky team had to forfeit because a South player tested positive for COVID. The mothers of two South players are originally from Logan County. Dylan Fair is the son of Russellville High School graduate Jamie Page Fair and her husband Derick. He is the grandson of Becky Page and of Charlie Page, both of Russellville. Justin Capps is the son of Logan County High School graduates Andy and Jennifer Harlan Capps. He is the grandson of Joe and Linda Harlan of Olmstead and the late Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Capps of Lewisburg. Also from Kentucky's Great Lakes region, Michigan beat Ohio 5-2 in Sunday's championship game. There were no international teams in this year's World Series because of health concerns.

Soccer Panthers beat Butler County 11-1
From Russellville boys soccer coach Jeramy Rust: The goals came from everywhere Thursday night as we played Butler County. Dalton Gilbert scored 3 goals, Avery Flener 1 goal and 2 assists, Jeremiah Smith 1 goal and 2 assists, Dustin Brown 2 goals and 2 assists, Akshar Patel 2 goals, Milo Brooks 1 goal, and Samuel Cruz 1 goal. Nick Bollenbecker had 3 saves against 1 goal allowed. Final score 11-1 #RVKSoccer with the win.

Glasgow wins 49-35 shootout
over RHS at Rhea Stadium
After Russellville came back to tie visiting Glasgow 35-35 midway through the fourth quarter, the Scotties scored 14 points in a few seconds, thanks to a couple of Panther turnovers and big plays by the Glasgow offense, led by quarterback John Carter Myers, a former Panther. The visitors won the thriller 49-25. Lennon Ries, Jaquis Todd, Javari Gamble, Josh McMurry, Chevis Elliott and Dustin Brown all had big games on offense for the Panthers, who have scored 80 points in their first two games this season. Ries, who had a 60-yard touchdown run, finished with 100 yards rushing and 125 passing. The 1-1 Panthers of Coach Mikie Benton entertain Logan County in next week's Clash of the Cats.

Russellville releases COVID
numbers before break
From Russellville District Program Coordinator for Safe Schools/Public Relations Conrad Reding: These numbers are accurate as of 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27: Students Positive = 44 (up 22 from Wednesday); Students Quarantined = 115 (down 47 from Wednesday); Total students involved in active COVID cases = 159 (down 25 since Wednesday); Staff Positives = 9 (up 4 since Wednesday); Staff Quarantined = 10 (up 3 from Wednesday); Total staff involved in active COVID cases = 19. Russellville schools will be closed for 10 days until Tuesday, Sept. 7, to allow students and adults to get healthy.

Cougars blow out Christian County
through another running clock
Davin Yates demonstrated clearly Friday the importance of a quality backup quarterback. When Logan County starting QB Corbin Rayno left the game at Christian County immediately after completing a crucial pass to Yates early in the second quarter, Yates went behind center and led Coach Todd Adler's team to five second-quarter touchdowns, a running clock early in the third quarter and a 49-6 win over the Colonels--traditionally one of Western Kentucky's premier high school football programs. Ryan Rayno ran for two touchdowns. Wyatt Blake set up several scores with his kick returns and caught five passes in the first half, Cade Johnson was strong on defense and ran 23 yards for the final touchdown. Dayton Blackford caught a pass to the Colonel three-yard line, and JunVontrae Dillard scored from there. Mattia Giubilato kicked all seven conversions, repeatedly kicked off into the end zone, and executed a perfect onside kick that was fielded in the air by Ryan Rayno. The Cougars have now outscored Warren East and Christian County 86-6 with two running clocks going into next week's Clash of the Cats at Russellville.

From Logan County Athletic Director Greg Howard: There will only be one game tonight at Cougar Stadium. The team will now play an eighth grade game against James Bazzell Middle School on Thursday. That game will be scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. and gates will open at 5:30.

Ribbon cutting for Flint Ridge
to be held on Saturday
The Logan County Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon cutting for the historic Flint Ridge-The McCuddy House this Saturday at noon. It's located on Bores Road, which leads to Red River Meeting House. Adam and Becky Scales, who have devoted much time and work to Red River, have restored this important piece of Logan County history.

Cougars win 37-0 at Warren East
With Ryan Rayno running wild, the Logan County Cougars built a 30-0 halftime lead at Warren East and ignited a running clock with 6:30 remaining in the third quarter on an 82-yard scoring drive capped off by a touchdown run by Jesse Buchanan. Rayno, a junior, rushed for 182 yards on 14 carries in the first half, scoring touchdowns on runs of 4, 15 and 69 yards. Junior Mattia Giubilato kicked a long field goal and four extra points. Coach Todd Adler later let him a 53-yarder that was on line but a little short. Wyatt Blake ran 21 yards for one of the touchdowns. Sophomore Davin Yates, junior Corbin Rayno and freshman Brady Hinton quarterbacked the Cougars. Logan totaled 443 yards in offense and won the game 37-0. The defense held the Raiders to 139 yards.

Panthers build 31-0 lead at half
After a delay of almost an hour for lightning, the Russellville Panthers returned to the field with another touchdown against visiting Butler County. Lennon Ries threw his third touchdown pass and went 4 for 5 in the first half for 124 yards. Jackson Hampton, who caught the final TD of the half, pulled in two scoring passes for 90 yards, and Jaquis Todd caught the other. Coach Mikie Benton's team totaled 327 yards in offense in the first half and held the Bears to just 24 yards in the 31-0 RHS lead.

Logan's active COVID cases
increase by a third this week
Logan County has added 262 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the past week, bringing the total for the past year and a half to 3,596 cases, according to the Barren River Health Department. There are currently 521 active cases, up from 394 on Aug. 13, an increase of almost a third (32.2 percent).

Panthers up 24-0 as
lightning delay strikes
Russellville's season-opening football game is in a lightning delay at Rhea Stadium, where the Panthers lead Butler County 24-0 with about 4 minutes remaining in the first half. Jovari Gamble has already rushed for over 100 yards, and scored the season's first TD on a 50-yard run. A 34-yard pass reception by Jaquis Todd from quarterback Lennon Ries was the first of two scoring strikes. Jackson Hampton has also caught a 54-yard pass for the other. Dustin Brown has kicked a 32-yard field goal and connected on three extra points. Todd's points. Todd's interception set up the first touchdown. Every player named is a senior, some of them fifth-year seniors. Ries' two TD passes (in only three attempts) have gone for 88 yards. Logan County has not yet started its game at Warren East, which is the second match-up of the night there.

High school football begins tonight
The Kentucky high school football season begins tonight. The Russellville Panthers kick off first with Butler County the opponent for the Linton-Wren Kickoff Classic at Rhea Stadium, named for late, great assistant coaches Buddy Linton and Howard Wren. At 6:45 p.m. a ceremony will be held to retire the 24 number of the late RHS athlete Shawn Edmonds of the Class of 2004. The game will be aired live on WRUS, with pregame starting at 6:30. Coach Mikie Benton and Panther fans have great hopes for this season because of the large number of fifth-year seniors returning, thanks to a ruling by the KHSAA to allow students to repeat the 2020 school year without penalty.
The Logan County Cougars will be on the road for a bowl game against host Warren East. It's expected to kickoff about 8:30 p.m. Coach Todd Adler believes this year's team will continue the success his Cougars have known the past four years while compiling a 34-10 worksheet. WRUS will switch to this game when the Panthers' contest is over. It will also air in its entirety Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.

Senior Panther sports passes

With Russellville's home football season starting Friday night, Alumni guru Greg Owens says "New RHS principal Rex Booth and Athletic Director Ryan Davenport want to remind everyone about the Senior Panther sports pass. If you are 60 years old and a graduate of RHS you are eligible to get a pass to attend all Panther home games free of charge. This does not include playoff or tournament games. All you have to do is call the Central Office at 270-726-8405 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. M-F and make an appointment to get your badge. This program was started in 2016 and our new administrators want to make sure all of us "Old School" Panthers are taken care of. Let's all get out and support our Panthers!"

Logan County Athletic Director Greg Howard has announced that today's softball games have been canceled. Head Coach Victoria Cates and Assistant Coaches Kristen Rodgers and Sarah Montgomery field a very young team, including eight graders Hailey Henson, Caris Taylor and Kinsley Taylor; seventh graders Rylie Fulcher, Addison Holloway, Sydney Newman, Anne Owen and Reese Wetton; sixth graders Brenley Adler, Paisley Burton, Reece Bush, Ellie Celsor, Blake Curry, Rylee Grayson, Alissa Hampton and Kallie Taylor; and fifth graders Maci Clinard, Britt Wetton and Allie Kitchens.

Lewisburg's Toby Crafton
named to WKU Alumni Board
The WKU Alumni Association recently elected nine new board members for 2020-2021 who will serve three-year terms. One of them is Retired Lt. Col. Toby Crafton of Lewisburg, a 1980 and 1981 alumnus of WKU and Lifetime Member of the WKU Alumni Association. The Owensboro native is retired from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, where he worked for 15 years and served as its deputy director. He is also retired from the United States Army, in which he served 20 years, ending at the start of 2001.
