Panthers earn running
clock at Barren County
The Russellville Panthers ran their sparkling season record to 5-1 Friday with a 43-7 win at Barren County, a school with hundreds more students than RHS. Athletic Director Ryan Davenport says the Panthers scored on their first two offensive plays, one of them a 50-yard pass from Lennon Ries to Anthony ‘Rooster’ Woodard. The lead moved to 28-7 in the first quarter via Chevis Elliott interception return for a touchdown. The running clock came with 10:43 remaining in the game. Cougars score late to beat Hoptown
A Davin Yates-to-Wyatt Blake 4th down 49-yard touchdown pass with 1:15 remaining in the game and then two missed field goal attempts by Hopkinsville with no time showing on the clock highlighted a 13-12 win by the Logan County Cougars Friday at the Stadium of Champions. The Cougar defense played hard and well all night with Cade Johnson and Elijah Hawkins being especially impressive. Ryan Rayno ran for 101 yards in the game, and Jack Delaney made a clutch catch that kept the winning drive alive. Star Cougar kicker Mattia Glubilato wasn't available to kick in the second half because of being injured trying to make a tackle. The Cougars are now 4-1 overall and 1-0 in their Class 4A district.

Cougars and Tigers to claw
it out at Hopkinsville
Two of the state’s top-ranked Class 4A teams will collide in Hopkinsville tonight when the sixth-ranked (according to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s RPIs) Logan County Cougars face the seventh-ranked Hopkinsville Tigers. The Cougars are 3-1 on the season. Like the 2-3 Tigers, the Cougars have won with ease over Christian County. They have also romped over Warren East and edged Franklin-Simpson. Their loss came last week to undefeated 5A school Greenwood. Hoptown’s other win was over Caldwell County. Coach Craig Clayton’s perennial powerhouse has lost to contenders Louisville Ballard (6A), Mayfield (2A) and Bowling Green (5A). Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and will be aired lived on WRUS.

Logan Middle Girls B’ball tryouts set
Tryouts for the Logan County Girls Middle School Basketball team will be held Oct. 18 and 19th from 5-7 p.m. at the Chandlers School gym. Those trying out must have a current Sports Physical statement with them. They must wear their own athletic clothing and bring their own water bottle. RHS and Med Center teaming for community vaccination clinic
Russellville High School will offer a vaccination clinic through a partnership with The Med Center in Bowling Green this Friday. This clinic is open to ANYONE 12 and up in Russellville/ Logan County seeking to become fully vaccinated. The first round of the Pfizer vaccine will be administered on the 24th and then the second dose on Oct. 15. Appointment details are in the attached flier. Participants simply call and schedule themselves and then show up at their time on Friday. "When folks see this they may think it's only for our staff and students, but we would love to have a huge turnout for the good of our entire community!" says school spokesman Conrad Reding.

Younger Logan v'ball teams win
their divisions at Paducah
The Logan County Freshmen and JV Lady Cougar Volleyball teams both won their Gold Divisions in Paducah Saturday. No players' names, statistics or scores were announced, but video clips of several matches can be seen on the Logan County Lady Cougar Volleyball Facebook page.

Logan County Farmers' Market
offers summer veggies in fall
Even though fall has officially begun, the Logan County Farmers' Market will continue to offer summer vegetables Saturday morning. Patrons can expect to find tomatoes, greenbeans, purple hull peas, squash, cucumbers, candy onions, mutti-colored peppers, okra, potatoes and more along with fall items like pumpkins, gourds and butternut squash. Breads, fall flowers and jellies will also be available. The market is located behind the Logan County Extension Office under the pavilion, so rain should not be a factor. It opens at 7:30 a.m.

Panther soccer to host Aces
in All A sectional Saturday
From Russellville boys soccer coach Jeramy Rust: After a slow start we got things going and downed the Trigg County Wildcats 4-1 Thursday to improve our record to 10-3-1 on the season. Avery Flener (2 goals), Dustin Brown (1 goal, 2 assists), Dalton Gilbert (1 goal, 1 assist), Jeremiah Smith (1 assist), and goalkeeper Nick Bollenbecker (7 saves, 1 allowed). We have Owensboro Catholic Saturday morning at 11 with a trip to Frankfort for the Elite 8 of the All "A" Classic on the line. Everyone please come out cheer loud for these guys; they deserve to have the stands packed.

Panthers shutting out
Franklin at halftime
The Franklin-Simpson Wildcats had to punt the first three times they had the ball tonight, and visiting Russellville took advantage each time to build a 21-0 lead. After Chevis Elliott intercepted a pass in the end zone to end the first half, the Panthers are still leading 21-0 at the break. Coach Mikie Benton's team scored on long runs by Javori Gamble & Jaquis Todd along with a 55-yard halfback pass from Rooster Woodard to Jackson Hampton. The Panthers held the Wildcats to 80 yards total offense in the half.

Panthers head to Franklin Friday
Coach Mikie Benton's Russellville Panthers will take their 3-1 record to face their oldest rival, Franklin-Simpson, on the road Friday at 7 p.m. They will try to win their second straight game at the Wildcats after last year's 14-12 thriller. Coach Max Chaney's Wildcats are 1-3, including 0-3 against Kentucky teams, following last week's 29-27 loss to Logan County. The game will be carried live on WRUS (104.9 FM. 619 AM, and on the station's website and mobile app).

Services to be held at RHS for 'Johnny C'

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The service will start at 1 p.m. The family is asking that everyone wear black & gold. COVID takes life of RHS
football great Jonathan Cage
One of Russellville's most outstanding football players has died. Travez Hampton says his uncle, Jonathan 'Johnny C' Cage, died from COVID. Cage was the leading rusher on Russellville's great state champion 1983 team coached by Ken Barrett. He was first team all-state on both offense and defense. He was part of the Panthers' super backfield that included quarterback Andy Woodall and running backs/blockers Clay Parrish & Rodney Gordon. Logan Journal editor Jim Turner once described the speedster as a "racecar wearing cleats."

Deadline for Festival Queen's
Pageant registration Friday
The first event of the 2021 Logan County Tobacco & Heritage Festival is the Queen’s Pageant, which will be held Thursday, Sept. 23. The deadline for registering is Friday, Sept. 17. Applications are available at the Tobacco Festival website. They can be returned to the Logan County Chamber of Commerce office or the front offices of Logan County High School or Russellville High School.

Flener leads Panthers back
to reach All A regional finals
From Russellville Athletic Director Ryan Davenport: Down 4-0 in the first half, the RHS Boy's soccer team stormed back to defeat the Todd County Rebels 7-5. Avery Flener scored seven goals in the win to put his career total at 109 goals scored. Russellville advances to the 4th Region All "A" Championship game against Glasgow this afternoon.

Panthers dominate East in
second half of 41-7 win
After a sluggish first half, the Russellville Panthers dominated the third quarter on the way to a 41-7 win at Warren East's Homecoming Friday. Jovari Gamble had an awesome offensive game, rushing for three touchdowns and catching a screen pass from Lennon Ries into a 62-yard score. He rushed 13 times for 158 yards and caught 2 passes for 70 yards. Ries threw a 25-yard TD pass to Josh McMurry for another touchdown. Dustin Brown kicked 5 extra points. Chevis Elliott intercepted 3 Raider passes and Jaquis Todd picked off another. Fifth-year senior transfer Braxton Baptiste was all over the field on defense and Gamble's lead blocker on offense.

Cougar field goal with 1:13
proves to be winner over F-S
A 16-play, 66-yard drive ended on a 20-yard field goal by Mattia Glubitato to give the Logan County Cougars (3-0) a 29-27 win over visiting Franklin-Simpson (1-3) Friday. A 2-yard run by Omar Harrison had given the Wildcats a 27-26 lead in the middle of the fourth quarter before the winning drive. Quarterback Davin Yates had scored two touchdowns, one of them on a 96-yard interception return. Ryan Rayno's run had given the Cougars a 13-7 lead, but F-S quarterback Luke Richardson led his team to a go-ahead score with 4 seconds remaining in the half. Wyatt Blake scored on a touchdown pass by Yates. The Cougar defense shut the Wildcats down on a final, last-gasp possession to end the game. Flener scores 4 goals
to lead win, set record
Scoring four goals in his team’s 11-1 win over Allen County-Scottsville Thursday, senior Avery Flener became Russellville Soccer’s all-time leading career scorer. His 102 goals total surpasses the 98 Hall of Famer Nathan Thompson scored at the end of the 20th century. Dalton Gilbert scored two goals with Samuel Cruz, Cameron Lewis, Taylor Gwynette, Milo Brooks & Dustin Brown adding one each. Lazaro Lopez and Akshar Patel joined Brown with two assists each. The win ran the Panthers’ record to 7-2-1.

Family decides to postpone
memorial service for Marcia Fuqua
During his regular weekly appearance on WRUS' Feedback Thursday, Justice William G. Fuqua announced that his family has decided to postpone the planned memorial service for his late wife Marcia. Bill and Marcia Fuqua made their home in his hometown of Russellville for most of their 65 years of marriage, where both have been active in a wide range of civic activities. Mrs. Fuqua, 87, died at their home on Aug. 20. A memorial service was planned for Saturday, Sept. 18, but Judge Fuqua said he and their three grown children decided Wednesday to postpone the service because of the resurgence of the COVID pandemic and health/travel issues of some of their relatives. The children—Rene Kilgore, Ann Harr & Randy Fuqua—live in three different states. A new date has not yet been set.

Bill Webb's cousin among
today's Hall of Fame inductees
When Major League Baseball inducts the newest members of its Hall of Fame today in Cooperstown, there will be a Logan County Connection: Former St. Louis catcher Ted Simmons was chosen for the Hall by the Veterans Committee. He is the cousin of Dr. Bill Webb of Russellville. Also to be inducted are former players Derek Jeter of the Yankees and Larry Walker of the Expos and Rockies along with the late players' union head Marvin Miller. The induction ceremony can be seen live at 12:30 p.m. on the MLB Network.

Kaylee Silvey graduated in May of 2021 and was hired this fall by the Carlisle County Schools to teach music at Carlisle Middle School. Congrats on the job, Kaylee!

Logan Middle Softball beats
Bowling Green 15-6
After some tough losses over the last couple weeks, Logan County Middle School Softball recorded an impressive 15-6 win over Bowling Green, The team as a total had 15 hits. Sydney Newman, Reese Wetton, Caris Taylor, Kallie Taylor, and Anne Owen had multiple hits. Sydney Newman led the team with three hits in four at bats. Owen was the winning pitcher, surrendering six runs on ten hits over five innings, striking out five and walking zero. Coach Victoria Cates says, "The win was definitely a confidence booster for the team and prepared us to get ready for our district games this week against Franklin-Simpson and Russellville."

Funeral services today for real
estate broker Bobby Blackford
Funeral services will be held today for real estate broker Robert L. Blackford at Summers and Son Funeral Home. The Auburn area native built a large real estate business headquartered in Russellville but active in multiple states. He was a bigger-than-life figure with his booming voice and outgoing personality. He was a talented auctioneer and his business centered around fast-paced auctions that were streamed live often in his latter years. He often donated his talents to conducting fund-raising auctions for local non-profits. He was especially associated with Russellville Rural Fire Department and the Adairville Strawberry Festival. His obituary appears on the Logan Journal.

Panthers grind out 10-0
win over Todd Central
After a big defensive play by Chevis Elliott got the ball back for the Russellville Panthers near the RHS goal line with 8:06 remaining in the game, the Panthers used a rugged running game to eat up those final 486 seconds of a closely contested game to beat the visiting Todd Central Rebels 10-0 Friday. Dustin Brown kicked a first-half field goal and an extra point, and Elliott caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Ries. The Panthers rushed for 220 yards and Lennon Ries threw for another 122 while the RHS defense held the Rebels to 34 yards total offense, according to WRUS statistician supreme Mark Reynolds, Gamble carried the ball 19 times for 97 yards and Ries 14 for 98. Jaquis Todd and Gamble each caught three passes. These two teams combined for 101 points in season-opening wins but only had 10 in this one. The Rebel cause was hurt when versatile junior Nate Reding was injured early in the second half. Omarion Riddick did much of the ball carrying for the Rebels and Gavyn Nolan was the quarterback.

Panthers lead Todd 3-0 at half
A 27-yard field goal by Dustin Brown with 3:17 remaining in the second quarter was the only score of the first half as Russellville leads Todd Central 3-0 at Rhea Stadium. The Panthers had one long drive, one close call and one big break, but couldn't take advantage of them on touchdowns. After neither team managed much offense in the first quarter, Todd intercepted a Lennon Ries pass and had a first and goal inside the 10, but the Panther defense held. RHS moved the ball 65 yards primarily behind the running of Jovari Gamble, but Ries threw another interception. The Panthers got the ball on a fumble recovery at the Rebel 15-yard line, but penalties moved them back before Brown's kick. Then the half ended when Jaquis Todd was stopped at the Todd Central four after he made a long run. Penalties dominated with RHS having 13 flags converted into a negative 98 yards. The Rebels lost 65 yards on 8 penalties. Two more penalties were offsetting, bringing the total to 23.

Clash postponed six weeks,
RHS to host Todd Friday
The Clash of the Cats football game has been postponed from this Friday until Oct. 15, and the Panthers have scheduled a new opponent for this week. Russellville Athletic Director Ryan Davenport wrote on Facebook, "Logan had to cancel." The Kentucky High School Athletic Association's Scoreboard calls it a COVID cancellation. Logan County Schools reported 107 students and 25 adults with active COVID cases Tuesday. A total of 463 students were quarantined in the system's seven schools. Russellville is already out of school this week for COVID. Tuesday 221 of the estimated 1,100 students (20 percent) in the city school had either tested positive or were on quarantine. The Panthers will entertain Todd Central Friday instead of the Cougars with a 7 p.m. kickoff. Coach Josh Robins’ Rebels are 3-0, having doubled the score on Trigg County 56-28 and getting COVID forfeit wins over Fort Campbell and Webster County. RHS is 1-1.
