Logan is one of three area counties put on alert about possible winter weather problems on local roads, one day after rare New Years Day tornado activities plagued the Land of Logan.

After a long several weeks battling severe weather aftermath, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 3 crews are shifting focus to the incoming winter weather system. The southern portion of the District is expected to be impacted the most.

The U.S. National Weather Service out of Louisville has put counties from the southern part of the District under a Winter Weather Advisory. Allen, Simpson and Logan counties fall under the advisory in the District 3 area. Other counties in the District and outside of the District 3 area could be impacted as well.

Motorists are advised to expect slick driving conditions during the overnight and morning hours. Temperatures are expected to drop to in the mid-twenty degree range overnight. Motorists should plan extra travel time as well as time to clear ice from windshields.

The District 3 Snow & Ice team has been monitoring the forecast and has called for KYTC District 3 crews in the southern counties of the District to report in tonight. Crews are expected to treat roads to improve conditions. Other counties will be on stand-by and ready to respond should those counties need to be out. Please adjust driving behavior for the possible hazardous conditions and also be on the lookout for KYTC vehicles.

Saturday, tornado watches and warnings abounded in 60-70 degree temperatures. Heavy winds and rains struck in the early afternoon, damaging several buildings and vehicles in the southern half of the county.

Parts of downtown Hopkinsville and the Greenwood Mall area in Bowling Green suffered major damage in what is believed to have been tornado touchdowns.

Sunday afternoon, temperatures dropped by about 30 degrees and huge snowflakes fell for hours.

Rainfall that measured two and a half inches and more Saturday had the ground soaked with warm water, keeping the snow from sticking on the ground early, but trees and bridges were covered.
