BGH ends Lady Panther season at region
Powerful Bowling Green overwhelmed the 13th District runner-up Russellville Lady Panthers 70-32 Monday in the Fourth Region Tournament at Diddle Arena. When Lady Panther guard Amiyah Collier was assessed her third foul only a minute and a half into the second quarter, the Lady Purples were already ahead 17-5. They led 34-10 at the half. Tanaya Bailey topped BGH with 24 points. Meadow Tisdale scored 14 and Saniyah Shelton 13. Collier scored 10 of her team-high 12 points in the second half, but Coach Calvin Head's defense held talented RHS freshman Lareesha Cawthorn to a single point. It was the third time in four years that the Lady Panthers have drawn the Lady Panthers in the opening round at region. Senior Anastasia Dowlen and juniors Jaylah Kees, Brinley Mason and Collier have played key roles on all of those Russellville teams under three different coaches.

Auburn Banking Company President Brian White has announced the addition of Russellville businessman Brent Crabtree to the bank's advisory board. He joins Auburn area farmer Marcus Huffman, Chris McGinnis of WRUS, realtor Tim Haley, and Logan Aluminum IT manager Chad Hardison on that group.

Panthers and Cougars named all-district
Three Russellville Panthers—Jovari Gamble, Lennon Ries and Jayden Russell—and two Logan County Cougars—Zane Batten and Kade Wall—have been named to the 13th District All-Season Boys Basketball Team. They join from champion Franklin-Simpson Jalen Briscoe, Gabe Jones, Andreyas Miller and Connor Vincent and from runner-up Todd Central Jamison Glass, Mareka Johnson and Preston Moore.

LCHS graduate Clark returning
to Hoptown as football coach
Marc Clark, who was known by his middle name Adam Clark while attending Auburn Middle School and Logan County High School, is returning to Hopkinsville High School as head football coach. He held that same job from 2011-2015 and went 21-34, including 10-2 his last season of Class 5A football. From there he became head coach of Class 6A McCracken County, where he put together a 39-29 record, 27-20 before last season. YourSportsEdge.com reports he was District Coach of the Year three times and WKC Coach of the Year in 2016. A former Cougar assistant coach, he succeeds the retiring Craig Clayton. The Tigers are Logan’s biggest rival in their Class 4A district. Clark has never coached against LCHS or Coach Todd Adler.

LCHS to present Shrek The Musical Jr.
Tryouts begin Monday for the Logan County Schools’ production of Shrek The Musical Jr. Open auditions for sixth graders through seniors in Logan schools will be held Feb. 28-March 31. Logan's coronavirus incidence
rate drops into Orange Zone
The coronavirus incidence rate for Logan County has dropped to 19.5 per 100,000 people, which places the county in the “Orange Zone” instead of its long-time residence in the “Red Zone.” Only 47 new cases were reported this week, bringing the total for the past two years to 8,381 with 112 deaths, two of them new. A week ago, Logan’s incidence rate was 53.8. Slightly less than a month ago, Logan had 540 new cases and an incidence rate of 243.5. This is a drop of 91.3 percent in cases and 92 percent in the incidence rate.

Lady Cougars & Lady Panthers honored
Six players from the Land of Logan teams were named to the 13th District Girls All-Season Team. They are Emily Borders, Gracie Borders & Kadyn Costello of Logan County and Lareesha Cawthorn, Amiyah Collier & Anastasia Dowlen of Russellville. Also selected were Alera Barbee, Katelyn McAlister, LeeLee Partinger & Hadley Turner of Franklin-Simpson and Alexis Taylor & Abby Williams of Todd Central. It was obvious that the vote was taken before the district tournament, since Lady Panther Jasmine Patel was omitted.

Lady Panthers draw BGH at region
The Russellville Lady Panthers will play one of the favorites, Bowling Green, in the last game of the first round of the Fourth Region Basketball Tournament Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Diddle Arena. Coach Calvin Head's Lady Purples are 25-7 overall and are second rated in the region by the KHSAA RPI listings. Coach Dennis Pardue's Lady Panthers (9-15) are 10th rated but beat fourth-rated Logan County (21-12) in the district and led first-rated Franklin-Simpson (22-3) at the half of last night's district finals. Third-rated Barren County (21-6) and 14th-rated Clinton County (12-19) are also in Russellville's bracket.

After starting strong, Lady Panthers
fall in district championship game
The Russellville Lady Panthers started strong in the 13th District Tournament finals Thursday, leading heavily favored Franklin-Simpson 14-8 after a quarter and 22-19 at the half. But the Lady Cats, who have the best record in the 4th Region, outscored RHS 13-1 at one juncture and went into the final quarter ahead 42-34. The final eight minutes was all Franklin, and the Lady Cats won 65-41. When F-S fifth-year senior star Alera Barbee left the game so reserves could play, she had 40 points, the same total as the Lady Panthers. Freshman Lareesha Cawthorn, who was named third team all-region for the season, scored 17 points for Coach Dennis Pardue's Lady Panthers. Jasmine Patel added 7 points and Amiyah Collier had 6 points before fouling out with 6 minutes to go. Both teams will play at region next week.

Lennon Ries surfers torn ACL
Russellville multi-sport standout Lennon Ries had to be taken from the floor in the first half of the Panthers' two-point loss to Todd Central Tuesday night in the 13th District Tournament. Ries suffered a torn ACL in his knee, Greg Owens reports in his The R Club blog. Ries--a ferocious defender for RHS football for four years and the starting quarterback on the Panthers' state finalist team this fall--is scheduled to play football for Murray State University this year along with football/basketball teammate Javori Gamble. He has also been a solid contributor in basketball throughout high school. Owens did not discuss treatment plans for Ries.

Lady Panthers end Logan's season
Amiyah Collier had missed six games with an injury, and Jasmine Patel had been a complementary player most of her career, but they came up big for the Russellville Lady Panthers Tuesday in their 13th District Tournament 44-42 win over favored Logan County at LCHS. Patel, who only recently became the team’s post player, scored all 14 of her points in a 5-minute span of the third quarter. That flipped a 25-18 Logan lead to a 32-29 RHS advantage. Then Collier scored the final three points of the game for the win. Brinley Mason hit a crucial 3-pointer late in the game. Logan rebounded well, but there were a lot of rebounds to be had with the Lady Cougars struggling to put the ball in the basket. Logan missed four straight free throws in the final minute. Coach Dennis Pardue’s Lady Panthers will play Franklin-Simpson for the third time in two weeks in Thursday’s championship game.

City schools show single COVID case
In its latest COVID-19 Numbers Update on Mnday, Russellville School District reports only one active case of coronavirus. A student has tested positive, but no faculty/staff member currently has an active case of the pandemic. Six students are quarantined but no staff member is. Just a month ago on Jan. 21, the report showed 31 active cases (17 staff, 14 students) and 94 people quarantined, 87 of them students, for 125 total.

Cougar footballers to play
for 7-on-7 travel teams
Seven is the magic number. Seven local players have been chosen to play for 7-on-7 football teams. They are returnees from Logan County’s Class 4A state semifinalist team. Zane Batten, Eli Hawkins, Dayton Blackford & Chandler Snorton will be teammates of DSP Elite 18U. Ridge Holman & Damani Goodlue will be together on DSP Elite 14U. Flying solo will be Hunter Holloway on Indy Select 14U. “They will be traveling and competing this spring against some of the best competition around. The work never stops; proud of you guys,” says Cougar Coach Todd Adler.

Community Ed adds song writing class
Beginning Song Writing: Learn to write songs! This class will present the basic concepts of popular songwriting and how to write memorable lyrics. It will cover copywriting, publishing, and any other questions. The instructor is Travis Bryan. Parks & Rec gauging interest
in holding girls softball league
Russellville Parks & Recreation is considering offering a girls softball league for ages 9-12. The season would involve games in May and June. The staff is trying to determine if there is enough interest in playing to offer the league. Logan's Dedra Adler named
region's Coach of the Year
From Athletic Director Greg Howard: Logan County High School is proud to announce that our Girls Basketball Coach has been named 4th Region Girls Basketball Coach of the Year by the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches. A prestigious honor by her peers. Coach Dedra Adler is in her second season as the head coach of the Lady Cougars. In their first season under Coach Adler, the Lady Cougars went 5-22 overall, 3-16 in regional play, and 2-5 in the district. In her second year at the helm the Lady Cougars are currently 21-11 overall, 10-6 in region play, 3-3 in the district, and the number two seed in next week's 13th District Tournament hosted by Logan County. The Lady Cougars are currently touting the 4th best record in the region. Coach Adler also garnered her 100th win last week.

Each of the five Logan County Middle Schools has been recognized nationally as Schools to Watch! This year, Adairville, Auburn, Chandler's, and Lewisburg joined Olmstead in being redesignated. The Logan County School District is one of only 15 districts in the nation to achieve the honor of having all our district's middle schools recognized.

Logan County hosting Senior Night
In addition to playing a doubleheader against visiting Allen County-Scottsville tonight, the Logan County basketball teams will honor the program's four seniors between games. Kadyn Costello, Sierra Seiber and Samarah Dowell are the Lady Cougars' twelfth graders while Dakota Clinard is the lone senior on the Cougar squad. Senior cheerleaders will also be recognized. Middle school teams are also to be honored. WRUS will broadcast both games live.

Little Panther Academy to meet Friday
Russellville Independent Schools and the Logan County Public Library are teaming up to host the Little Panther Academy. The Little Panther Academy will occur once a month at Russellville Schools in the former RMS library at 210 East 7th Street in front of Rhea Stadium. Our next session is Friday, Feb. 18, from 10-11:30 a.m. This is open to ages birth to 5 years old not currently enrolled in a childcare/school setting in the Logan County and Russellville community. Families can learn right alongside their littles through music, movement and crafts! A light snack and drink will be served to the families as well. Each family will go home with a storybook, as well as fun take home activities and learning toys. The LPA is made possible through grants and community partnerships.

Robin Cornelius to serve
as Stevenson interim principal
Robin Cornelius, who was an administrator at Russellville's Stevenson Elementary School for eight years, including being principal from 2017-21, is returning to the school as interim principal, it was announced Friday afternoon. Cornelius moved up to the Central Office this year as director of pupil personnel. This school year began with Heather Carden, who had spent her previous teaching career in Ohio County, as principal. No reason was announced for the change. Cornelius, an Auburn native, will begin her near tenure at Stevenson on Monday, Feb. 21.

Lady Cougars clinch #2 seed at Todd
By beating Todd Central 55-51 at Elkton Friday, the Logan County Lady Cougars locked up the number two seed in the 13th District Tournament and guaranteed the Russellville Lady Panthers won’t have to play Franklin-Simpson in the first round. Todd’s loss means the Lady Rebels have to face F-S first. Todd played well in the first and fourth quarters, but Coach Dedra Adler’s Lady Cougars dominated the third quarter, turning a 3-point halftime deficit into a 9-point lead going into the third quarter. Senior Kadyn Costello hit some clutch free throws to seal the win. Gracie Borders scored 16, Emily Borders 12 and Costello 11. Jamala Coleman led Todd with 18 points while Abby Williams scored 12 and freshman Alexis Taylor, who dominated the offensive board, added 10. Russellville, which was missed four key players, was beaten 65-28 at Franklin.

District doubleheaders affect seedings
Tonight's 13th District doubleheaders--especially the girls games-- could play a big role in seedings for the district tournaments, which will be played at Logan County High School in two weeks. Russellville's teams are at Franklin-Simpson and Logan's at Todd Central. A Lady Cougar win would mean that Todd Central is the four seed. If the Lady Panthers win at Franklin-Simpson, Coach Dennis Pardue's team will have a chance to tie F-S for the number one see in a makeup game Tuesday. But if RHS and Logan lose, three teams could be tied for second place. The boys district pairings are set with Franklin playing Logan, but it's not clear yet whether Russellville or Todd Central will be the two seed. Portions of all four games tonight will be aired on WRUS.

Clash of the Lady Cats set Monday
The second Clash of the Lady Cats will be played Monday on Phil Todd Court at Russellville's Jim Young Gymnasium. When the game was to be played in early January, RHS had to forfeit because of COVID. That was officially declared a 1-0 win for Logan County. According to Russellville Athletic Director Ryan Davenport, that forfeiture will count on records, but Monday's outcome--rather than the forfeit--will be used in determining seeding. Coach Dennis Pardue's Lady Panthers (8-10 overall, 2-3 district) helped their standings by winning at Logan (17-10, 2-3) 10 days ago but unexpectedly lost 46-44 to Todd Central (7-12, 1-4) after beating the Lady Rebels by 20 points two days earlier. Franklin-Simpson (15-5, 5-0) appears headed toward the number one seed. Game time is 6 p.m. Monday.

Russellville band awarded music grant
Russellville Band Director Trevor Cardwell and the Panther Band have been selected as one of 25 honorees from across the country who will receive a Music & Arts Micro-Grant. The grant application was an extremely competitive process, and the Russellville Panther Band was the only band from the state of Kentucky to receive the grant.

Guests scheduled during Black History Month on WRUS’ Feedback include William Woodard, president of the Russellville-Logan County NAACP, on Monday, Feb. 7, and Dr. Mitchell Forte, president of Hopkinsville College of the Bible, on Monday, Feb. 21. Even though he has retired as the morning air personality on WRUS, Don Neagle continues to host Feedback.

New Friendship to host MOPS meeting
New Friendship Baptist Church is inviting all mothers to a MOPS gathering in the church’s Small Fellowship Hall on Monday, Feb. 7, at 5:30 p.m. This will be an information meeting about MOPS International to share with all mothers in the area about this exciting new outreach opportunity. MOPS was only for mothers of preschoolers when it began, but it now is for mothers of all ages of students.

RHS Cheerleaders holding Cheer Clinic
Russellville High School’s cheerleaders plan to offer their Spring Cheer Clinic this Saturday from 1-2:30 p.m. for ages 3-13 in the Russellville Junior High gym. Those attending will learn cheers and a dance to perform with the cheerleaders at a home game next Saturday, Feb. 12. The cost is $10 per participant.

Dr. Jim Dodson retires as a physician
From Logan Memorial Hospital: Dr. James Dodson has retired after 45+ years as a physician. Dr. Dodson was not only a respected doctor, he was a beloved friend to many of his patients and a admired colleague to those who were honored to work along side of him for so many years. Dr. Dodson will truly be missed in the halls of LMH, but we know he will be enjoying playing tennis, walking his dog, and polishing up on his already phenomenal trumpet skills!
