Little Cougar Academy
registration underway
Youngsters who will be kindergarten students in the Logan County Schools next year and their parents are invited to attend the Little Cougar Academy’s two sessions this spring. They will be held March 16 and April 15 at the Logan County Career & Technical Center. Meals will be served from 5-5:30 p.m. with sessions following on being prepared to start school. Lady Cougars finish
a point short in OT
After trailing throughout the first 28 minutes of the game by as many as 11 points, the Logan County Lady Cougars fought back to take a brief lead and force an overtime in their Fourth Region game at Diddle Arena Monday. They tied the score twice in OT, but Metcalfe County’s Aubrey Glass hit three late free throws that proved to be the difference in the Lady Hornet’s 56-55 win. The Lady Cougars got a huge lift off the bench from eighth grader Reese Wetton, who hit a pair of 3-pointers on the way to 11 points. Trying her for team scoring honors was junior Emerson McKinnis, who recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Emily Borders scored her team’s last two points and finished with 10. Freshman Aubrey Jolly scored 15 for Metcalfe while eighth grader Josie Allen and sophomore Kassady London added 11. The Lady Hornets (19-9) will now play Coach Calvin Head’s Bowling Green Lady Purples (21-10) Friday.

Lady Panthers beat Logan
for district championship
Russellville’s Lady Panthers built a 17-point lead early in the second half, saw it reduced to a single point late in the fourth quarter, and held on for a 45-40 win over Logan County for the championship of the 13th District Tournament Thursday in Elkton. Freshman Ja’eda Poindexter, who had only hit two free throws all season, banked in one with 18 seconds remaining to put RHS up by three. Then the Lady Panthers’ defense, which had been rugged all night, forced the Lady Cougars into a turnover that resulted in a Jordin Morris goal at the buzzer. LaReesha Cawthorn, who joined Poindexter with four fouls in the third quarter, finished with 14 points while Brinley Mason and A’miyah Collier added 12 points each. Nora Epley scored 9 points for Logan with TaKayla Mason and Gracie Borders adding 8 each.

Friday fish fry to raise
Funds for Haiti Missions
A fish fry will be held this Friday at Watson Metals just west of Auburn on U.S. 68-80 to raise money for Mennonite Haiti Missions. Three pieces of fresh fish, hushpuppies, French fries, cole slaw and a choice of beverages and pies will be on the menu. All plates are by donation. Fifth Grade boys district
to be played Saturday
For the first time, a 13th District Tournament for fifth grade boys will be played at Logan County High School Saturday. It will begin with one of the earliest Clashes ever as Logan County and Russellville playing at 9 a.m. The last scheduled game before seeding features the Cougars against Franklin-Simpson. The seeded games will begin at 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. with the championship game at 6.

Collier and McKinnis ranked
high in softball region
They will play against each other in the district basketball finals Thursday night, but two local stars will soon begin what should be another great softball season. The top 10 players and teams in the Fourth Region were announced Wednesday. Russellvile senior A’miyah Collier is ranked fourth and Logan County junior Emerson McKinnis is seventh in a vote of regional coaches. Collier has already signed to play NCAA Division I softball. Collier’s teammate and cousin, Jaylah Kees, also got votes. Three players from South Warren were in the top eight, and that helped the Lady Spartans be ranked as the top team. Russellville and district rival Franklin-Simpson are ranked sixth, and Logan is next in eighth place.

Todd Central dominates
second half, beats Panthers
The Russellville Panthers led host Todd Central 22-18 with two minutes remaining in the first half Tuesday. The Rebels outscored RHS 45-23 the rest of the way for a 61-43 romp in the 13th District Tournament. Todd star Jamison Glass had 27 points and 8 blocks. Preston Rager added 13 points. A.J. Woodard got the start for the Panthers and responded with a team-high 11 points. Eli McMurry scored RHS’ first seven points to tie the score, but he added only two more the rest of the game. No one else scored more than five points. After beating Franklin on Feb. 1, Coach Phil Todd’s Panthers lost their last eight games to finish 7-21. Todd and Franklin will play in Friday’s finals.

Lady Cougars score 22
straight, beat Todd in district
A magic number proved to work magic for the Logan County Lady Cougars tonight. Trailing 18-12 early in the second quarter, Coach Dedra Adler’s team scored 22 straight points to take a 34-18 lead in the final minute of the half. Meanwhile, Lady Cougar star Gracie Borders, whose availability was in doubt following an ankle injury that had sidelined her for two games, scored 22 points to lead the winners to a 66-52 win over homestanding Todd Central in the 13th District Tournament.
TyKyla Mason, Emily Borders and Brenley Adler also scored in double figures with Emily hitting 8 of 10 free throws and the team 17 of 24. Nora Epley played key outside defense, and Kyla Bilyeu, Emerson McKinnis and Adler dominated the interior on defense and on the boards. They held Lady Rebel star Alexis Taylor to 6 points. Abby Williams scored 13 and Jamaia Burks 12 to lead the Lady Rebels. It will be a third Clash of the Lady Cats in Thursday’s 7 p.m. finals. They split their regular season games.

Franklin boys end Cougars' season 56-40
The Logan County Cougars kept the game fairly close in the first half Monday against heavily favored Franklin-Simpson, but the Wildcats blew the game open in the third quarter. Logan’s reserves outscored the F-S bench, but the top-seeded Cats ended Logan’s season 56-40 in the opening round of the 13th District Tournament at Todd Central. Jack Delaney scored 11, Kade Wall added 9 and sophomore reserve Samson Hightower hit a pair of 3-pointers on the way to 8 points for Coach Josh Frick’s Cougars. For F-S, Jalen Briscoe, Gabe Jones & DeMarcus Hogan scored 16, 13 and 10, respectively. Franklin hit 12 of 20 free throws and Logan 2 of 3. Zane Batten and Taylor Corbin are Logan’s only seniors.

Lady Panthers upset F-S in district
The stars were not only out tonight but they were aligned in Russellville’s favor. With star players LaReesha Cawthorn & A’miyah Collier dominating the second half and especially the fourth quarter, the Lady Panthers knocked off top-seeded Franklin-Simpson 51-47 Monday in the opening game of the 13th District Tournament. Cawthorn scored 16 of her 25 points in the second half, including 12 in the final period. Collier, who took only two shots the first half, scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half. Both had huge rebounds and steals. Numerous big plays were made by Brinley Mason, Jordin Morris & Ja’eda Poindexter. Coach Orlando Hayden’s defense shut down virtually all of the undefeated in the district Lady Kats except Lee Lee Partinger, who scored 15. RHS will now await Tuesday’s game between Logan County and Todd Central to see who they play in Thursday’s finals.

Carpentry teachers featured
The Logan County Career & Technical Center is highlighting the Manufacturing and Carpentry programs at the school. All four teachers studied at the school or its predecessor, Russellville Area Technology Center. They are Barry Bond, who has taught electricity and Industrial Maintenance for 23 years. He was taught by Bob Matthews. Welding instructor Lee Wells has taught there for 17 years after learning from Chris Warner. Jeramy Rust has taught Construction for six years. His teacher was Luther Bagwell. Machine Tool instructor Andy Parker is in his fifth year teaching after being taught by Mitch Cundiff, Chris Hoffman and his current colleague, Barry Bond. to honor Evelyn Richardson
Evelyn Richardson is the Colonel Benjamin Logan Chapter Son of the American Revolution's 2022 Patriot Award recipient. The Award Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Logan County CTC at 6 p.m. Mrs. Richardson is a retired regional librarian and a volunteer in countless community activities. The annul Agriculture Appreciation Luncheon will be held at the Logan County Extension Office on Friday, Feb. 24 in conjunction with the Logan County Chamber of Commerce. Rebels complete sweep of RHS
The Todd Central Rebels earned the number two seed in the 13th District Tournament by completing a sweep of the Russellville Panthers this week 58-46 Friday in Elkton. The Rebels had also won at RHS Monday. These teams will play again in the district, which also will be at Todd. Preston Rager scored 21 for the Rebels with Jamison Glass scoring 17 and Hayden Strader 10. Coach Phil Todd's team had eight players score, but Layne Steele, Jayden Russell & Noah Stovall tied for top scorer for the Panthers with 7 points each. Logan County lost both games at Franklin-Simpson.

Gracie Borders injured
in Lady Cougars' win
Lady Cougar star Gracie Borders was injured on her Senior Night Tuesday as she helped Logan County crush visiting Christian County 62-38. She suffered a low ankle sprain, according to her grandmother, Phyllis Borders, who says the goal is to get her ready to play in district tournament, which starts a week from Monday. The win was Coach Dedra Adler's team's fourth straight and ran their record to 16-10, the fourth most victories in the region. Borders is the only 13th District player--boys or girls--to be named First Team All-Region. South dominates 2nd half
in win over Lady Panthers
Russellville was ahead by three points at halftime at South Warren Tuesday, but the Lady Spartans dominated the second half 27-13 to beat the Lady Panthers 50-39. A'miyah Collier led the Lady Panthers with 15 points. LaReesa Cawthorn added 14 points and, according to WRUS' Will McKenzie, she recorded her 19th double-double as one of the state's leading rebounders. Freshman Ja'eda Poindexter added 7 points. Coach Orlando Hayden's team was without two veteran seniors, the injured Jaylah Kees and the sick Brindley Mason.

Todd holds off Panthers in OT
For the second straight district road game, the Todd Central Rebels had to go into overtime, and Monday they won again at Russellville. Coach Phil Todd’s Panthers scored the final 14 points in regulation to tie the game at 55-55. A three-point goal in the final minute of OT by Trayvon Foster proved to be enough for a 64-61 Rebel victory. Tutu McKeage scored 15 for the Panthers and Nick Woodard added 14, all but 2 in the first half. Jayden Russell led the comeback with 10 late points, and Layne Steele scored 8 while playing tough defense on Todd star Jamison Glass throughout the game. These same two teams will meet again in Elkton Friday.

Todd girls edge Lady Panthers 60-58
Russellville came ever-so-close to beating Todd Central Monday, but the Lady Rebels escaped with a 60-58 district win. Todd standout Alexis Taylor hit a pair of free throws with 2.8 seconds remaining for the winning points. Poor free throw shooting cost RHS the win. The Lady Panthers were a dismal 11 of 29 at the line, missing at least 18 points (it would have been more if they had hit the front end of bonus situations.) The home team also had turnover troubles. The Lady Panthers had made 23 floor errors with over 6 minutes remaining.
Those negatives overshadowed big games by Lady Panther stars A’miyah Collier (25 points) and LaReesha Cawthorn (17 points, double figure rebounds). Brinley Mason scored all 9 of her points in the fourth quarter. Taylor led the Lady Rebels with 18 points. Abby Williams and Jamaia Burks added 14 each. The Lady Panthers were without senior veteran Jaylah Kees, who had dealt with ankle injuries all season. The Lady Panthers must win at Todd Friday to avoid being the number four seed in the tournament.

Drainage repairs to be made
on Iron Mountain Road
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet today announced Logan County Fiscal Court will receive $12,120 in County Road Aid emergency funds for drainage structure repairs on Iron Mountain Road in North Logan. Repairs on Iron Mountain Road are being done at the drainage structure about two miles north KY 106. Logan Fiscal Court is responsible for administering the work.

They are Austin Rayno and Koby Wall, both of Lindsey Wilson College; Dylan Penick, Harding University; Braxton Meguiar, Georgia Gwinnett College; Parker White, Kentucky State University; Kruise Newman, Walters State Community College; and Blake Wood, Kentucky Christian College. Meguiar helps Grizzlies win
opening baseball series
Former Logan County baseball standout Braxton Meguiar played a big role in Georgia Gwynette College's 5-3 win over Indiana Wesleyan University Friday n season-opening series. The Grizzlies, who have played in the last two NAIA World Series, are ranked seventh in the nation this year. The college's sports information staff wrote this: Sophomore Braxton Meguiar extended GGC's lead to 5-1 with an RBI single that scored junior Jon Ponder in the sixth inning. Earlier, Meguiar had put the team on the scoreboard with a two-out single in the third inning.

RHS splits close games at Franklin
Two super ball games resulted in a district split Wednesday at Franklin-Simpson. Coach Phil Todd’s Panthers led the entire game, hit 7 of 8 three-pointers, and canned 10 of 12 free throws in the final 92 seconds on the way to a 55-44 upset of the Wildcats. Eight Panthers scored, led by Eli McMurry with 16 points and Nick Woodard with 12. Five players hit those treys, and the Panthers recorded 12 assists.
The Lady Panthers came ever-so-close to Lady Kats team that’s ranked third in the region. RHS led 23-16 at the half and went up 33-20 on freshman Ja’eda Poindexter’s third 3-pointer of the game. F-S, however, scored 15 straight points. Russellville tied the game on a 3-pointer by Jordin Morris with 21 seconds remaining. A Franklin player was fouled with 3.6 seconds. Coach Ashley Taylor’s team ran a perfect inbounds play, and Jasmine Savage hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the 45-42 win. LaReesha Cawthorn scored 12 and Poindexter 11 for RHS. Katelyn McAlister scored 12 and. Lee Lee Partinger 10 for the winners.
The same four teams will be in action Friday at Russellville’s Homecoming.
