Lady Panthers headed to All A state again
For the fourth straight season, the Russellville Lady Panthers have qualified for the state All A Softball Tournament. Coach Ryan Davenport’s team won a doubleheader Saturday to win the regional championship once again. It too three extra innings, but the Lady Panthers edged homestanding Cumberland County 4-3 before 10-run ruling Todd Central 13-2 in five innings. Todd had squeezed past Monroe County 2-1. Akiah Bell, Reese Croslin, Chloe Penrod, and Madison Penrod were named All-Tournament. RHS will play at state in Owensboro the last weekend in April.

RHS' Addy Wright and Bri Maguire earn state STLP honors
STLP State Competition was held this week in Lexington. Russellville High School had two students that received awards for their submissions. Addy Wright won 1st place for her reimagined Book Cover created in Adobe Illustrator, and Bri Maguire won 2nd place for her AI On-Demand Challenge using Adobe Firefly to create a product that aligned with the 2024 Theme: Past Meets Present. The Kentucky Department of Education's Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) uses project-based learning principles to empower student learning.

Nine local band members earn WKU Honors Jazz Band seats
Band members from both Russellville and Logan County high schools have been selected to participate in the 2024 WKU Honor Jazz Band on April 13. From LCHS are Solomon Weiss and Claire Dayton, both on alto sax, Austin Phelps and Micayla Doyle, both on trumpet, Lane Bibb on vibes and Jaden Rager on baritone sax. From RHS are Caleb Ragland on alto sax, Grayson Beard on trumpet and Aliza Wilson on piano.

Auburn Adult Easter Egg Hunt Saturday evening
The annual Auburn Adult Easter Egg Hunt will begin at 5 p.m. this Saturday. The No Deposit Band will begin playing at 5 p.m. while registration is going on. This event is for ages 21 and over. No one younger will be allowed on the property. The $35 ticket includes egg hunt participation and a glass of wine or beer. DD Tickets are $30. Over 8,000 eggs will be hidden and each will have something in it. Cash and prizes will be found. Food trucks will be available. Tickets are limited and admission will be cut off when they are gone. Stevenson Preschool screening starts
Screenings for Russellville Preschool at Stevenson Elementary will be held for the 2024-2025 school year this Friday, March 29, and Friday, April 19. Notes Over Noodles tonight
A few tickets may be available for Notes Over Noodles, a pasta dinner and musical showcase presented by the RHS Panther B nd Boosters. After the dinner, the band will present the music. There will be a live auction of donated items with Brent Summers as auctioneer. It all begins at 6:30 at Russellville High School.

Lady Panthers win over Clarksville team
Rayleigh “Ray Ray” Roberts hit her first career homer, Crissy Higgins doubled among her 2 hits, Alexis Triplett doubled in a run and scored one, Ja’eda Poindexter singled and drove in two runs, Kayelynn Davenport singled and scored and Chloe Penrod pitched a complete-game 4-hitter as the Russellville Lady Panthers beat Clarksville Kirkwood Tuesday. Akiah Bell worked the only walk RHS recorded. Coach Ryan Davenport’s team is 2-1 on the season.

Lady Cougar tennis beats Muhlenberg
On a cold, windy evening, the Logan County Lady Cougars beat visiting Muhlenberg County 4-1 Tuesday at home. Winners were number one Maddie McGinnis 8-4, number three Hannah Britt 8-2, and the doubles teams of Bella Gaddis/Juliana Vargas 8-0 and Addison Hughes/Jocelyn Shimp 8-3. Muhlenberg won the boys match 4-1. The lone Cougar winner was number three Joshua Clark 8-2. Greta Winchester coaches both teams.

Signups begin for Summer Youth League
After-hours registration sessions for Summer Youth League diamond sports in Russellville begin this afternoon at the Russellville Rec Center on Winter Street. Sports involved are Tee Ball for boys or girls ages 4-6, Softee Ball for girls ages 5-8, and Coach Pitch for boys ages 7-9 and girls age 9. Players can be signed up during regular office hours of Russellville Parks and Recreation or during extra hours (2-6:30 p.m.) on March 19, March 26, April 1, April 2, April 9 and April 11. Logan tennis dominant in
twin 4-0 wins over East
Both tennis teams representing Logan County High School not only beat Warren East 4-0 last week, but all the singles matches were one-sided. Cougar singles players Trapper McCarley, Pablo Celadiila and Matteo Accorsi and Lady Cougar singles players Maddie McGinnis, Rhyan Curry and Juliana Vargas each combined to win their matches by 24-3 each. The lone doubles match for both teams won in extra play. Joshua Clark and Aidan Hughes won their match 8-7 by going 7-2 in the tiebreaker. The girls played it out with the team of Bella Gaddis-Addison Hughes winning 9-7. Coach Greta Winchester’s teams will entertain Muhlenberg County Tuesday afternoon.

Fire Departments awarded high-tech cameras
Three fire departments in Logan County have been awarded a thermal imagining cameras through a grant program overseen by the Kentucky Fire Commission. They are Auburn City Fire Department, Auburn Rural Fire Department and Russellville Rural Fire Department.

Diamond sports seasons beginning
Baseball and softball teams from Russellville and Logan County will start their 2024 seasons today or tomorrow. in baseball, the Logan County Cougars will entertain Ohio County at 5:30 today and will go to Greenwood tomorrow. The Russellville Panthers will lead off the season at 6 p.m today at Edmonson County and then entertain Clarksville Northwest at the same time Tuesday. The Lady Panthers will be on the road for a 5:30 first pitch tomorrow at Warren East. The Lady Cougars will join their baseball counterparts by also hosting Ohio County today at 5:30. Regular seasons last through the middle of May before district tournaments begin.

Todd girls reach regional finals
The Todd Central Lady Rebels will play in the Fourth Region championship game today at 7 p.m., following their come-from-behind 51-49 win over Metcalfe County in the semifinals last night. Abby Williams totaled 18 points and 6 rebounds, Alexis Taylor a double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points, Jordyn Shemwell 14 points and Chloe Collins 5 rebounds. The finals will not be a 13th District rematch, however. Coach Nick Suttle's Lady Rebels will go against Bowling Green instead of tournament favorite Franklin-Simpson was handed only its second loss of the season 52-39 by Coach Calvin Head's Lady Purples.

headed to NAIA nationals
The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team has earned an at-large bid into the 2024 NAIA Women's Basketball National Tournament. The Blue Raiders advanced to the Mid-South Conference tournament semifinal. Gracie Borders, who was Fourth Region Player of the Year while breaking the 1000-point barrier for the Logan County Lady Cougars last season, is a member of the team. Lindsey Wilson travels to Ashland, Ore. where the (RV) Blue Raiders will face No. 23 Menlo (Calif.) on March 15. Also in the Ashland quadrant are 18th-ranked Southern Oregon and Antelope Valley (Calif.).

Defending state champs end Cougars' season
Warren Central, which won the state boys basketball championship last year, beat 13th District champion Logan County 72-42 in the first round of the Fourth Region Tournament at Diddle Arena Wednesday. Coach William Unseld's Dragons scored the first 11 points of the game, but the Cougars turned on their defensive pressure and played Central even the rest of the half, which ended 29-18. Central took control in the second half. Junior center Samson Hightower was impressive with 25 points and Nick Blann played excellent defense against Dragon standout Kade Unseld. No other Cougar scored more than three points, though. Coach Josh Frick's Cougars finished with a 16-16 record, including 5-3 in the district.

LCHS Band Spring Concert Thursday
The Logan County High School Bands will present their Spring Concert on Thursday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the LCHS Main Gym. This concert will feature the LCHS Jazz Band and the LCHS Symphonic Band. The concert is free and open to the public and should last approximately an hour.

Registration is now going on for young baseball and softball players at Auburn. Youngsters ages 4-6 can play teeball. Coach pitch baseball is for ages 6-8. The two divisions of softball are coach pitch for ages 6-8 and player pitch ages 8-12. The fee is $65 per player. Paige Vanzant named all-conference
Brescia University senior point guard Paige Vanzant has been named all-conference by the River States Conference. She has started 23 of 27 games, averages 6.7 points per game and is second on the team in assists. Vanzant and her twin sister Peyton Vanzant played key roles for three straight district champion/regional semifinalist Logan County teams which won 62 games under the direction of Hall of Fame coach Finley Baird.

BGH ends Panther season at region
Bowling Green High built a 32-17 lead at the end of the first quarter on the way to an 85-62 win over the Russellville Panthers in the first round of the Fourth Region Tournament at Diddle Arena Monday. The Purples' lead was 49-28 at the half. Coach Phil Todd's Panthers played much better in the second half. The BGH margin in the second half was just two points, 36-34. RHS' only senior, Eli McMurry, ended his Panther career with 15 points and several assists, but the leading scorer for both teams was RHS junior Too Two McKeage. Coach D.G. Sherill's Purples (27-5 and number 1 in the region), who were led in scoring by Deuce Bailey with 13, will play in next Monday's semifinals against Cumberland County, which upset Barren County in Tuesday's opener.

13th District teams win
girls regional openers
Both girls teams representing the 13th District won their Fourth Region Tournament openers this week. District champion Franklin-Simpson (30-1) breezed past Allen County-Scottsville (12-18) Monday with LaReesha Cawthorn totaling 21 points and 7 rebounds. Runner-up Todd Central (18-12) upset Warren East (26-5), the region’s second-rated team, 70-64 with Abby Williams scoring 24 and Alexis Wilson 23. JaMya Kay pulled down 8 rebounds and Jordyn Shemwell 7. The Lady Rebels will play Metcalfe County (20-12) in Thursday’s semifinals. Franklin takes on always competitive Bowling Green (21-10) in the other semifinal.

Shaker Village receives
Grant for replication
South Union Shaker Village has been selected as an Americana Corner Preserving America grant recipient. “With this grant, we will be replicating the brick range in the kitchen of the 1824 Centre House. Having this back in the kitchen will reflect a more accurate depiction of this historic space to visitors,” says a Shaker Village announcement. The Americana Corner program was established to assist non-profit organizations like South Union Shaker Village in telling the incredible story of America from its founding era through its first century as a nation.

Death claims RHS golf
legend Gerry Switzer
Russellville Hall of Fame golfer Gerry Switzer, 71, has died, Summers and Son Funeral Home has announced. Mr. Switzer was the number one player on the 1970 Panther team which won the state championship with a then-record low team score. It was RHS' first state championship and the only one so far that's overall, not by classification. After graduation, he played golf for Western Kentucky University while getting the education he needed for his career, accounting. The Logan Journal will have a complete obituary on Gerry Switzer when the funeral home release it.

Logan teams draw Warren teams
Once again, the 13th District basketball teams have drawn 14th District teams in the Fourth Region Tournament, which begins Tuesday night at Diddle Arena on the campus of Western Kentucky University. The 14th District consists of all the teams in Bowling Green/Warren County except Warren East. On Tuesday at 7:30, 13th District runner-up Russellville will play 14th District champion Bowling Green. On Wednesday at 6 p.m., the 13th District champion Logan County Cougars go against 14th District runner-up Warren Central, the defending state champion. Winners of those games will play in the semifinals almost a week later on Monday, March 11.

Cougars hold off Panthers to win district
Kade Wall gave the Logan County Cougars a lead they would never relinquish with 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter Friday. With 0:09 remaining in the game, Wall hit two free throws to clinch a 54-49 win over Russellville for the 13th District championship. In between, the lead was never more than 8 and seven times the Panthers drew within three or fewer points. It was that close a game, befitting a finals. Whenever RHS closed in, Brady Hinton, Davin Yates or another teammate rose to the occasion, which Coach Josh Frick termed “finding a way to win on both ends of the court.” Big men Samson Hightower of Logan (16-15) and Too Two McKeage of RHS (6-26) tended to nullify each other with great defensive performances. Hightower was held to 12 points and McKeage to 7. Wall scored 17 and Hinton 11 for the champs with Eli McMurry leading the Panthers with11 and Kein Gray and Noah Stovall adding 10 points each for Coach Phil Todd’s team. Both teams advance to next week’s regional. Tournament brackets will be drawn Saturday morning at Warren East.
