accident came 50 years ago today

On May 24, 1974--a half-century ago today, Russellville High School baseball standout Kelly Russel was struck at the base of his skull by a slowly thrown baseball during the Panthers' warmup for the Fourth Region Tournament. It apparently burst an aneurysm near his brain, and he never took another breath without mechanical assistance. His funeral was held a week later at RHS' deGraffenried Auditorium. The baseball field at RHS is named for him, baseball and softball games are played at an event bearing his name, and many Panther student-athletes have received financial assistance for higher education through the Kelly Russell Scholarship.
