Festival Bike Ride postponed a week

The Bike Ride which is part of the Logan County Tobacco & Heritage Festival has been postponed because of heavy rains from this Saturday until next Saturday, Oct. 5, Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Polly Steenbergen has announced. New registrations will be accepted by calling the Chamber office at 270-726-2206. She also says this is the final day to register at a discount price for the Road Rally, Jesse James Walk and Run, and the Craft Show and Flea Market.

Panthers and Cougars win convincingly

Both local football teams won convincingly on the road with similar scores Thursday, including earning running clocks. The Logan County Cougars led 40-0 after three quarters and beat district rival Calloway County 40-7. The Russellville Panthers led 20-0 at the half on the way to a 41-6 win at Todd Central.

Cougars' game Calloway moved to tonight

Because of severe weather concerns Friday, the Logan County Cougars will play football at Calloway County tonight at 7 p.m. Coach Todd Adler's team (2-3) will be two-touchdown favorites to get their first road win and first district win of the season against the Lakers (0-5). WRUS is not going to be able to broadcast the game under this new schedule.

RHS-at-Todd game moved to Thursday

Because of weather concerns, the Russellville Panthers (1-4) will travel to Todd Central (2-3) for their football game Thursday at 7 p.m., instead of Friday. The game will be broadcast live on WRUS.

RHS Band to present free

performance at Rhea Friday

From Sarah Beth Pitts: Our 45^th Annual Show of Bands was cancelled halfway through the event due to unsafe weather that blew in Sept. 14. Because of that our students, especially those who are seniors, had to miss out on their big home show exhibition performance and cadence march around the field. It was disappointing and many tears were shed but our kids are resilient and are hard at work to continue with a successful season. For our 13 senior students, we know we cannot get this event back, but we are going to do our best to try to recreate the experience Friday night under the lights at Rhea Stadium at 8:30. Please join us at the field and help us make this an even more memorable experience for our students! Please share and help us draw a crowd for these kids! This is a free performance, as there is no gate admission!

First Baptist and New Vision

churches considering merger

Members of both New Vision Community Church and First Baptist Church, Sixth and Main streets in Russellville, are expected to vote at services this morning on whether to combine the two churches into one. First Baptist Church has been a fixture and a force in downtown Russellville for over a century, but attendance has decreased dramatically in the past few years. New Vision is a relatively new congregation which has outgrown its site, which is a converted lumber supply store on the far western edge of the city. The combined church would meet in the First Baptist buildings with New Vision’s Brad Rogers, who is widely known and respected in Logan County, as the lead pastor. First Baptist does not have a full-time pastor currently.

Lady Cougars advance to 2A Final Four

Getting out the broom, the Logan County Lady Cougars swept Rowan County 25-8. 25-6, 25-17 in the first round of the Kentucky 2A Volleyball Championships at Kentucky Wesleyan College Thursday. Coach Caleb Sheffield’s team now plays in the semifinals Friday. It was the Lady Cougars’ seventh straight win and their ninth in their last 10 starts. They will play Taylor County, which ran its record to 15-5 with a 3-0 victory over Lewis County, at 10:45 Friday.

Logan burn ban continues

From Logan County Judge Executive Phil Baker: With the guidance from Local Fire Chiefs and Logan Co Ky Emergency Management directors, the decision to maintain the burn ban in Logan County seems wise given the unseasonably dry conditions. Safety and precaution are key in preventing potential fire hazards. I understand with fall arriving this isn’t a favorable choice, but know we all have the county’s best interest at heart while making this decision.

Russellville's 9^th Street to be resurfaced

A project to mill and resurface Ninth Street in Russellville is expected to begin this week. The section of KY 3240 from Russellville High School to the Bowling Green Road and Franklin Road will be down to one lane and motorists should expect delays. According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the work is being done during nighttime hours from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The project is being done by Scotty's Contracting & Stone LLC and is weather dependent.

Itty Bitty Ball signups beginning

Registration for Itty Bitty Basketball, which is designed for 4-year-olds and kindergarteners, will be held at  the Russellville Recreation Center on Winter Street each Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2-6 beginning this week and lasting through Oct. 3. Tuesday Logan Farmers' Market

sessions to continue until Oct. 1

After some confusion, Tuesday sessions of the Logan County Farmers' Market will continue. The market will be open from 3-6 p.m. each Tuesday through Oct. 1. Saturday sessions will continue from 7:30-noon throughout the months of September and October. Summer vegetables such as tomatoes, greenbeans, squash and cucumbers are still available along with watermelons and some fall items such as sweet potatoes, butternut squash and acorn squash. The market is located under the pavilion behind the Logan County Extension Office.

Isaiah House 117 Car Show today at Kirby

Recently both Justin Kirby of Kirby Funeral Services Russellville and Lori Gafford of Isaiah 117 House Logan have been featured as Hughes and Coleman Hometown Heroes on WBKO television. Today, they will join forces as a car show and cruise in will be held at Kirby Funeral Services to raise funds for the project to benefit children. Cougars win Clash 42-3

After a close first half, the Logan County dominated the second half on the way to a 42-3 win in the football Clash of the Cats Friday at LCHS. Ridge Holman quarterbacked the win with Brady Hinton and Isaac Christian  making some spectacular catches. Jacob White and Elijah Sells ran the ball well, and Caiden Kirby executed a perfect pooch onside kickoff with Sells' making the recovery. Coach Todd Adler's Cougars are now 2-1 on the season.

Logan Middle b'ball tryout site changed

Tryouts for the Logan County Middle School girls basketball team will still be held at Logan County High Schol Saturday, but they will be in the Auxiliary Gym instead of the Main Gym. Hours will be 10 a.m.-noon. Entry will still be through the main front doors. Players must have an updated physical on file. Cassie Zenner is the new Lady Cougar Middle School coach.

Cougars lead Panthers during lightning delay

Logan County leads visiting Russellville 14-3 shortly before halftime in a very closely played Clash of the Cats during a lightning delay. Coach Mikey Benton's Panthers dominated the first quarter and led 3-0 on an Alex Arnold 35-yard field goal. The Cougars have scored twice in the second quarter on a 32-yard interception return by Kolton Kelley, a 3-yard run by Elijah Sells and a pair of Caiden Kirby conversion kicks.

Panthers' second half comeback falls short.

Glasgow took advantage of a subpar second quarter by the visiting Russellville Panthers to build a 21-0 halftime lead and held on for a 35-12 win over RHS in a rivalry that dates back to the middle of the 20^th century. The Panthers put together a 90-yard drive and scored on a 3-yard run by Too Two McKeage. Later, he scored on a 58-yard pass from Hunter Hallman, who threw for over 200 yards.

Death claims legendary

RHS Coach Ken Barrett

Legendary Russellville High School football coach Ken Barrett died Saturday not long after having entered Hospice. Coach Barrett, 93, directed the Panthers to three state championships in 11 seasons between 1980-90. Another one of his teams reached the state finals. His 1983-84 teams put together a 24-game, state-leading win streak. He was named the Greatest Coach in RHS football history at the time the 50 Greatest Players were honored. He was enshrined in multiple Halls of Fame, and the football field at Rhea Stadium bears his name. Mr. Barrett also served as a Russellville City Councilman, and he was a co-owner of a Russellville business. He is survived by his wife Emily, their three grown children and his grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

RHS comes close, Cougars break game open

Russellville and Warren Central each scored a touchdown on five-yard runs and then powered two-point conversions in the Lewisburg Bank Bowl Friday night. But the Panthers' extra points were nullified by a hold away from the ball. That was all the scoring in Central's 8-6 win in a game marred by over 20 combined penalty calls. Homestanding Logan County trailed early and appeared to be in danger of losing in the second quarter, but then the Cougars dominated the remainder of the Lewisburg Bank Bowl nightcap to beat Butler County 44-13.

Cornhole event to raise funds for fire victim

A cornhole tournament will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Auburn Park Pavilion to raise funds for Chris Neal, who was burned by a fire/explosion on his property and has been a patient in the Vanderbilt Hospital Burn Unit. He participates in cornhole tournaments in Auburn. The fee is $20 per person. Bilyeu’s Grill on Wheels will be on site and will donate 40 percent of its profits to the cause. Donations will also be accepted from non-players.

Jackson's Orchard will return to Russellville Thursday with more of its immensely popular peaches for sale. The truck is expected to arrive about noon at Fellowship Church of Christ on Franklin Street across from the old Logan County Hospital and will remain until sold out.

Jackson's Orchard returning to Logan Thursday

Jackson's Orchard has a late variety of peaches ripening on its Bowling Green trees in abundance, orchard patriarch Bill Jackson tells The Logan Journal. The Jackson's Orchard truck will return to Russellville Thursday (tomorrow) about noon in its regular location, across from the old Logan County Hospital on Franklin Street at Fellowship Church of Christ. Turner Valley Produce will also be there with watermelons, cantaloupes, tomatoes and many other vegetables.

The Logan County Lady Cougars open their season today against Hopkinsville at the Stadium of Champions Field 2, starting at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Cougars are coached by Barry McReynolds. He is assisted by Brandi Lindsey. The seniors on this year’s team are Kyla Bilyeu, Kenzie Frcka, Lily Humble, Maria Ojeda, Caroline Timmons and Lilaina Veigel.

Tom Noe's life to be celebrated

at public library this Saturday

A Celebration of Life for the late Tom Noe will be held at the Logan County Public Library, this Saturday, Aug. 3, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Mr. Noe was a former County Attorney for Logan County, The public library has been very important to the Noe family. Tom’s mother, the late Lillian Rhea Noe, became library director when a new building was constructed on Russellville’s West Sixth Street in 1966; she served in that role until 1990. Tom was vice chairman of the library board when the current modern library was built and opened in 2013-14. The family says, “Everyone is welcome. A casual gathering with photos and video for everyone to share their memories of Tom.”

Weekend full of activities

at Emancipation Celebration

The next two days will be filled with activities, music, food, fun and fellowship as Russellville becomes the focal point during the annual 8^th of August Emancipation Celebration Festival. Most events are scheduled at Hampton Park or up East Seventh Street to the Concerned Citizens headquarters/KP Hall. But activities also will be held at Rolling Hills Golf Course, Kathy’s Hair Salon, SEEK Museum sites at various locations, and churches throughout Logan County. A Back to School event will be held for all students in the Logan County and Russellville school systems this Wednesday, July 31, from 3-5:30 p.m. at the Logan County Extension Office. From Logan County 4-H: “Join us for an afternoon of fun at the Logan County Farmers' Market on Tuesday, July 9, from 2-4 p.m.! Free goodie bags to the first 180 kids and 100 parents (limit 1 parent bag per family).” The Farmers’ Market will continue until 6 p.m., as usual. Jackson's Orchard to bring peaches to Logan Thursday

One of the area's legendary agri-businesses, Jackson's Orchard, will return to Logan County this summer with a truckload of fresh peaches for sale. The mega-growing/selling fresh fruit provider will bring a load of peach baskets to Russellville this Thursday, July 11, at approximately 11:30 a.m. The location will be the same as it has been the past few years, the Fellowship Church on Franklin Street near East Fourth Street across from the old Logan County Hospital. Also, Turner Valley Produce will have a variety of vegetables for sale. There is no set closing time; it will be based on when Jackson's Orchard peaches are sold out.

Culvert work to close Gordonsville Road

A project to replace a culvert will temporarily close a section of KY 1151 Gordonsville Road in Logan County. The closure is expected to begin Wednesday, July 17, with the road reopening Friday, July 26. The closure will be at mile point 5.8 located just north of U.S. 68. Motorists will need to seek alternate route. Message boards will be in place notifying motorists of the closure.

Bloodmobiles to be in Auburn & R'ville

Red Cross Bloodmobiles are scheduled to be in Russellville and in the Auburn area this afternoon. One will set up at New Friendship Baptist Church at 5030 Friendship Road, Auburn. from noon-6 p.m. Another will be at Second Baptist Church, 401 East Second Street, Russellville, from 2-6 p.m.
