RMS to host Family Wellness Night Monday

The Logan County Cattlemen’s Association in conjunction with the Logan County Antique Engine and Tractor Club will present the Turkey Track Thanksgiving Tractor Pull on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 30, beginning at 3 p.m. in the Logan County Ag Arena. Trick or Treat hours set for Logan and its cities

Trick or Treat hours for the four cities in Logan County and for the rest of the county have been announced. They are 4:30-7 p.m. in Adairville, 5-7:30 in Auburn, 5-7 in both Lewisburg and Russellville, and 4:30-7:30 in the unincorporated areas outside the cities.

East edges Lady Cougars in 5 sets

Leading two sets to one, the Logan County Lady Cougars needed to win one of the last two sets Tuesday to advance to the Fourth Region Volleyball Tournament finals. It didn't happen, though. Warren East, which was a slight favorite going in, scraped by with a 25-23 win in the fourth set. Then the Lady Raiders won the deciding set 15-9. Coach Caleb Sheffield's Lady Cougars, who were the defending regional champion and a state quarterfinalist in 2023, finished this season 20-15. Lydia Owens and Aubrey Sears received all-regional awards from Metcalfe County Athletic Director Josh Allen.

Logan to open v'ball region Sunday

Three of the five top-rated volleyball teams in the Fourth Region Tournament, including Logan County, have drawn into the upper bracket. The good news is that number one Bowling Green (30-6 overall, 11-1 region) is not one of them. The Lady Cougars (19-11, 22-1, 5th) will play Clinton County ((14-18, 9-10, 12th) at 4 p.m. Sunday at Metcalfe County. In their bracket are South Warren (21-11, 12-5, 3rd) and Warren East (19-10, 13-5, 4th). Coach Steven Lyne’s Todd Central team (18-16, 8-6, 9th) goes against BGH Monday. A Logan win would send the Lady Cougars into Tuesday’s 5:30 p.m. semifinals. The championship match will start at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Cougar Middle teams to host SKY championships tonight

The SKY Conference Football Middle School Championships will be decided at Logan County High School Saturday evening. Both the 7th and 8th grade Logan County teams play in both games tomorrow. The 7th grade game starts at 6 p.m. vs. Allen County-Scottsville. The 8th grade finals will follow, which matches Logan County against Barren County in a rematch of last year’s 7th grade Championship.

Cougars come from behind to beat East

Down 19-0 after a quarter, the Logan County Cougars ground out a 27-19 Class 4A district victory at Warren East Friday to move into a three-way tie for the number four spot in district standings. The game ended with the Cougar defense stopping the East runner inches short of the goal line on a play that started inside the Cougar 1-yard-line on a play that started with a tenth of a second showing on the clock. Among those making important offensive plays for the winners were Christian Helle, Ridge Holman, Brady Hinton, Cooper Parker, TySean Thomeczek, Elijah Sells, Caiden Kirby and the offensive line, who drove the Raider defense back over 80 yards on what proved to be the clinching touchdown.

Panthers blast Fulton County for championship

The Russellville Panthers won convincingly with a 40-12 road drubbing at Fulton County Friday. Their fifth win in their last six games clinched the Class 1A, Region 1, District 1 championship for Coach Mikie Benton’s Panthers. Sophomore Jamarion Gardner passed the 1,000-yard mark rushing for the season and senior quarterback Hunter Hallman broke the 1,000-yard barrier passing in this game. The Panthers have one more regular season game before they begin the playoffs at home.

Panther Band headed to state

After finishing third in regional competition this weekend, the Russellville Panther Band will compete at the Kentucky Music Education Association State Semifinals in Louisville Saturday morning and hopefully the finals that night. Director Trevor Cardwellm Assistant Director Brian Elliott and their band will leave for Louisville Friday at 5 p.m. from Rhea Stadium. They will go around Carrico Park Square and then take East Fourth Street and Bowling Green Road to Derby City. Russellville/Logan County residents who would like to show their support for the band are urged to be along that route to cheer them on.

RHS players named all-district

Russellville High School has announced the names of athletes on some Panther teams who have recently been named all-district. In boys soccer, the honors went to Riley Hatfield, Eli Flippen, and Mason Davenport for being honored as All District Soccer players. Russellville Lady Panthers' Finley Miller and Mya Rangel were selected to the 13th District Volleyball All-Season Team.

Lady Cougars win 22nd straight district title

The Logan County Lady Cougars have won their 22nd consecutive 13th District Volleyball championship. In fact, it has been 7,769 days since they have lost a district match in either the regular season or postseason. Coach Caleb Sheffield’s team beat Todd Central 25-22, 25-11, 25-14 in Tuesday’s finals at LCHS, The Lady Cougars had eliminated Russellville 25-2, 25-10. 25-13 on Monday. Lady Cougars Aubrey Sears, Lindy Mitchell, Lydia Owens, and Kirsten Harris were named to the 13th District All Season Team.

Clash to open volleyball district tourney

The host Logan County Lady Cougars are favored to win their 22nd straight district volleyball championship this week, starting with a Clash of the Lady Cats tonight at 5:30 against Russellville. Coach Caleb Sheffield's team hopes to extend the program's streak of not having lost a district match in over 20 years. The Lady Panthers are coached by Bailey Howell and Jerry Thweatt. Franklin-Simpson and Todd Central will play the second match tonight. The tournament finals will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the LCHS Auxiliary/Volleyball Gym.

Biggest football games of season tonight

The most important football games of the regular season will be played tonight by local teams. Often, the Logan County-Hopkinsville game has been for the district championship, but tonight the winners will most likely ensure themselves a playoff berth representing their six-team Class 4A district. Host Logan (3-4 overall,1-2 district) is a two-point favorite over the Tigers (2-5, 1-2). Russellville (3-4, 1-0) and Caverna (5-2, 1-0) are guaranteed playoff berths in their four-team Class 1A district, but tonight’s winner will most likely be the number one seed in the postseason. Host Caverna is rated fifth in the state, but the Panthers have won three of their last four games. WRUS will broadcast the RHS game live tonight and a recorded version of the Cougar game at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Kentucky Schools Commissioner to visit Logan Friday

Kentucky Commissioner of Education Robbie Fletcher will visit with Logan County Schools leaders Friday. He will be hosted by Superintendent Dan Costellow and Assistant Superintendent Ben Kemplin. Planned are a tour of Olmstead School at 10 a.m,, tour the Logan County Career and Technical Center at 11:45, and talk during lunch with the seven county principals, school board members, central office staff, and Rep. Jason Petrie.

L EAD Board calls meeting for property/prospect issues

The Logan Industrial Development Authority, Inc. (LEAD) will hold a called meeting Monday, Oct. 21, at noon in the Logan County Chamber of Commerce Meeting Room in the Harrison-Hite Building, 116 South Main Street, Russellville. After discussion of the contract on the contract for the spec building now under construction in West Russellville, the board will go into closed session for “discussion of property/prospect issues.” No specifics were announced. The purpose of a spec building is to have the basics of a site ready to attract new industries to the community,

Registration for Bitty Ball basketball begins Monday at the Russellville Recreation Center. This is for first and second graders. Signups can be done during regular office hours and on most Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-7 p.m. through Nov. 21 except next week, when the extended hours will be only on Monday, Oct. 28.

Auburn names its own top Haybale winners

The Williams Flooring Center entry on Main Street has been named Auburn's favorite in a contest conducted by Auburn Kentucky Tourism. Livvy Mae Boutique's entry, which was first-place winner in Logan County Tourism's Haybale Trail competition, placed second, and Susan Lynn Forsyth's entry, which earned a third place nod in one of the county divisions, was also third in this one.

Cougar basketball tryouts this week

Tryouts for the 2024-25 Logan County Cougar basketball season will be held on Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for those athletes not participating in a fall sport. There will be a separate tryout on Sunday, Oct. 20l from 1:30-2:30 p.m.for those that are currently playing a fall sport. You must have an updated KHSAA physical in order to tryout. Questions? Lady Cougars win regional opener

Pulling an impressive upset, the Logan County Lady Cougars edged visiting Barren County 4-3 Sunday evening to advance to Tuesday's regional semifinals on their home field Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Statistics for the game aren't available yet. Coach Barry McReynolds' team now plays Bowling Green, which knocked off Barren County 7-1 in the tournament opener earlier in the day.

Lady Cougars shut out Todd in soccer district

The Logan County Lady Cougars held off host Todd Central 2-0 Tuesday in the semifinals of the 13th District Soccer Tournament Tuesday. Scoring the goals were Nia Scipio & Lilaina Veigel on assists by Lily Humble & Maria Ojeda. Goalkeepers ensuring the shutout win were Kyla Bilyeu with 5 saves and Emma Bean with a sixth. Coach Barry McReynolds also sent on the field Sydney Walker, Caroline Timmons, Finja Schaefer, Adalyn Rogers, Kaylee Poe, Destini Pascual, Chloe Meredith, Kenzie Frcka, Richlynn Elam, Haley Cowan, Ava Cowan & Caroline Boortz. The Lady Cougars will play in the finals Thursday at 5:30 against top seed Franklin-Simpson, which beat Russellville 10-2 Monday.

Rising country music star JD Shelburne returning to Festival

Country music star JD Shelburne, a Kentucky native whose popularity is growing across the nation, will return to Russellville to headline the grand finale concert of the Logan County Tobacco & Heritage Festival this Saturday, beginning at 6 p.m. The concert is free. RHS girls win soccer finale

Led by Trystanne Hickman & Chloe Penrod, the Russellville Lady Panthers dominated Butler County 6-0 Friday for their first win in the last match of the regular season. Hickman scored four goals and added two assists. Goalkeeper Penrod recorded 21 saves in the shutout. Raigan Fuston had both a goal and an assist, Alexis De La Cruz scored, and M’Riyah Boyd added an assist. Also playing for Coach Eric Evans’ team in the win were Iriana Banks, Shaelynn Cross, Brooklyn Ray, Jazara Ray and Kendyll Wright.

Underdog Panthers bomb Bombers

The old gambler’s plea “7 come 11” proved to be too conservative for the Russellville Panthers Friday night. With 7 seconds gone in the game, RHS led 7-0 on a 7-yard fumble into the end zone by the visiting Ballard Memorial Bombers. Despite Ballard’s being an 8-point favorite, RHS led 21-8 after a quarter, 35-8 at halftime, and 48-8 midway through the third quarter, starting the clock on its rapid run. Tutu McKeage scored that timely touchdown, his fourth of the game. Jamarion Gardner had rushed for 118 yards on 7 carries by halftime, Hunter Hallman had thrown for 81 yards on 5 completions, and JaCovean Temple-Dickerson 3 receptions for 58 yards and a 41-yard touchdown [ass from Hallman. The Panthers had 201 yards in total offense in the first half, as compared to Ballard’s 96, dragged down by minus 53 yards rushing. Gordon totaled 163 yards on the ground, giving him over 600 yards in the last four games, three of them wins. The Panthers are off next week before going to Caverna for what is expected to the district championship on Oct. 18.

Thunder on the Square car show will be held this Sunday from 10-5 on Carrico Park Square in Russellville as the Logan County Tobacco & Heritage Festival reaches its midpoint. Clay Bilyeu is the driving force behind these events.

Panthers enter district play at home tonight

All-important district play begins tonight at Rhea Stadium when the Russellville Panthers entertain Ballard Memorial in Class 1A’s western-most district. This will be RHS’ only home district game before the playoffs. Coach Mikie Benton’s Panthers are coming off three straight strong outings, which include impressive wins over Trigg County and Todd Central and a solid performance for most of the game against Franklin-Simpson. Sophomore Jamarion Gardner has been a force, rushing for 223 yards and 4 touchdowns on just 11 carries at Elkton. Ballard (3-3) is still an 8-point favorite in KHSAA RPI rankings. Game time is 7 p.m. with live coverage on WRUS.

Cougars to host powerful district foe Tilghman

The Logan County Cougars will face Class 4A favorite Paducah Tilghman in a district battle Friday at Cougar Field. The 6-0 team from far western Kentucky is rated a touchdown better than the squad with the second and third highest RPIs, Franklin County and Boyle County. The Blue Tornado is averaging winning by a score of 48-10, including 41-10 over Mayfield and 42-16 over an Allen County-Scottsville team which has beaten Logan this season. The last several years the 3-3 Cougars, who are coming off a romp over Calloway County last week, have been consistent contenders annually, and Coach Todd Adler, his staff and his players have made a habit of overcoming strong odds. This is the first of two trips to the Land of Logan for Tilghman in less than a month. Coach Sean Thompson will bring his team to Rhea Stadium in the regular season finale Nov. 1.
