Two Cougar golf teams playing in Franklin today

Ten golfers are representing Logan County High School in the in the Battle at the Creek at Kenny Perry’s Country Creek Golf Course in Franklin. The B team, consisting of Kooper Burchett, Mason Hancock, Jacson Williams, Collin Jackson and Sam Bruner, is playing against other schools for the first time. As usual, the A team consists of Davis Switzer, Riley Shepherd, Karson Rodgers, Jaxon Tichenor and Zach Krohn.

Logan volleyball wins twice in Bluegrass Games

The Logan County Lady Cougars won their first two volleyball matches in the Bluegrass State Games Friday and have three more scheduled Saturday. They beat Heritage Christian 21-15, 21-10 and then held off Covington Holy Cross 21-15, 14-21, 17-16 in a nailbiter. Saturday they will be at Lexington Catholic High School to play Adair County at 9 a.m., Todd Central at 11, and Great Crossings at 1. Not only are the Lady Rebels of Todd County in Logan’s district but they are the team which Stephen Lyne and Rob Imlay have been coaching before returning to LCHS this season.

Bradshaw to play in TBT finals with big prize at stake

Pedro Bradshaw, one of Russellville’s all-time greatest basketball players, is a key reserve on the Eberlein Drive team which will play in the championship game of The Basketball Tournament (TBT) Sunday afternoon. Eberlein Drive, which is named for a street in Michigan, has some impressive wins, including beating Kentucky Wildcat Alumni at Memorial Coliseum. In the quarterfinals, they eliminated homestanding Best Virginia in Charleston. In the finals, which will be aired on Fox Sports 1, they will play Aftershocks, who are Wichita State. The winning team gets the million dollar first prize. No other team gets any of the prize money.

Tuesday the last day to register for soccer

This is the final day to register kids to play in the fall youth soccer league conducted by Russellville Parks & Recreation. The league is for girls and boys ages 4-9. The Rec Center will be until 7 p.m. for signups.

Opening Service for 8th of August Celebration Wednesday

The official Opening Ceremony for the 38th Annual 8th of August Emancipation Celebration Festival will be held Wednesday evening at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, beginning at 6 p.m. The Rev. Fred D. Fort is the pastor. The host pastor will be Perryn Dillard of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Tours of SEEK Museums will be available throughout the festival, which skips Thursday activities and then runs through Sunday. See the accompanying schedule of events.

RHS Band hosting Car Show Saturday

The Russellville High School Band will host its second Annual Back 2 School Car Show Saturday in the school parking lot. On-site registration begins at 8 a.m. The show will run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Entry is free but donations are accepted. It’s open to cars, trucks, motorcycles and vehicles of all classes.

World War II aircraft to be at local airport this weekend

According to Jeff Thoke of Honor Flight Bluegrass, the B-25 World War II bomber “Miss Mitchell” will arrive at the Russellville-Logan County Airport around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Then at 7 p.m. Saturday, rides are being offered at a cost of $495. Everyone is welcome to come out on Saturday afternoon, grab a free hot dog, and get an upclose look at this piece of America’s WWII history! Then come back on Sunday for the 10 a.m. veterans’ recognition ceremony!

Paving underway in West Russellville

Scotty’s Contracting has announced it will be paving Hopkinsville Street on Sunday night, Aug. 10. Work will begin in the evening and continue throughout the night. Please avoid parking on the street during this time. Drive cautiously and follow posted signs and flaggers. Access may be temporarily limited during paving.

Cougar football names captains for 2025

Coach Todd Adler has announced the captains for the 2025 Cougar football team. They are Carson Carlock, Isaac Christian, Robert Cooper, Maliq Ford, Caden Kirby, Cooper Parker, Luke Rogers and Tysean Thomeczek.

Madden Bloodworth places 2nd in Bluegrass Games

Russellville High School wrestler Madden Bloodworth finished second in her division in the Bluegrass Games this summer. She competed in the 18U, 118-pound class. Coach Jeremy Rust also took Panther wrestlers Kaleb Christian, Taven Harris and Brytan Ashley. “They all did great but faced some tough competition,” Rust says.

RHS grad Cam Cardwell named Panther golf coach

Russellville High School graduate Cameron Cardwell has been named Panther golf coach. He was already the tennis coach. A 2019 RHS graduate, he played golf, tennis, and basketball and could always be found on the Honor Roll. He graduated from WKU in the spring with a business degree. He is the Youth Minister at Aberdeen Baptist Church in Morgantown and resides in Russellville with his wife Brianna. He is the son of Panther assistant basketball coach Bobby Cardwell and his wife Sonya.

Many fall sports teams busy today

A middle school boys soccer match with Russellville visiting Logan County at 5:30, followed by the high school Cougars entertaining Glasgow is a highlight of local sports activities today. Also at LCHS, Middle School Softball will face South Warren. The Cougar varsity and JV teams are playing in a tournament at Madisonville Country Club. In middle school volleyball, Lewisburg is at Olmstead, Adairville at Chandlers, both at 5:30.

Jr. Conservation Board plans Back to School Bash

Coming off a very productive and well-received year, the Logan County Junior Conservation Board will hold a Back to School Bash on Wednesday, Aug. 20, beginning at 3:45 p.m. It will be at the Conservation Office, which is located at 253 Hopkinsville Road, Russellville. All high school students are welcome.

Adairville plans three monthly Bike Nights

Beginning this Saturday, once-a-month Bike Nights will be held in Adairville in August, September and October. The dates are Aug. 16, Sept. 20 and Oct. 18, each running from 5-8 p.m. BH James Distillers will arrange for refreshments and music. Dueling Pistols will be open with food and gaming.

Cougars finish 4th at Madisonville

Riley Shepherd led the way as the Logan County Cougars placed fourth against what Coach Will McKenzie calls “tough competition” in a tournament at Madisonville Country Club Monday. He shot 76, just ahead of Davis Switzer’s 78 and 81s by Karson Rodgers and Zach Krohn.

Logan Cross Country to experience many firsts Thursday

When the Logan County Cross Country teams take the home field Thursday evening for the Nightfall Relays, a number of firsts will be at play. On this first meet of the 2025 season, Logan runners will wear their new uniforms for the first time under first-year coach Sye Head on their newly marked and cleared cross country course for the first time. Head, his dad Gregg Head, team members and many of their parents have spent many hours not only in practice but also working to get the course—some of which goes through a thickly grown wooded area—ready for this big moment.

After-school hours today filled with sports events

At least 11 sports events involving Russellville and Logan County teams are on the Roy’s B-B-Que Sports Calendar on The LoJo today. Both schools’ varsity football teams are playing scrimmages, all four boys and girls soccer teams will be in action, the five county middle school volleyball teams have matches, and the Logan County cross country teams will host a relay event while showing off their revamped course. Lady Panthers beat Butler County Soccer 8-1

With sophomore Alexis De La Cruz leading the way with four goals, the Russellville girls soccer team ripped Butler County 8-1 on the road Friday. Coach Eric Evans’ team got two goals and an assist from Abbagale Riley, a goal and an assist by Trystanne Hickman, a goal by Jalah Witt, and an assist each by Aliza Wilson and Brooklyn Ray. Senior goalkeeper Chloe Penrod was credited with six saves while allowing the lone goal. The Lady Panthers will play their first district match at Franklin-Simpson Tuesday at 5:30.

Cougars win Class 2A state qualifier

At the 2A State Qualifier at Park Mammoth Monday, the Logan County Cougars earned a first-place team finish with three Top 10 individual finishes. Riley Shepherd tied for third place with a 73, Karson Rodgers tied for fifth with a 76, and Davis Switzer finished in a tie for seventh with 78. The other score that counted on the team’s 310 total came from Zach Krohn, whose 83 put him in a tie for 15th. Not far behind was Jaxon Tichenor, who tied for 20th with an 85. “They battled all day, and had we had two seniors come in clutch at the end! Riley birdied the last two holes, and Karson almost holed out on 18 and had a tap-in birdie,” notes Coach Will McKenzie. State will be played Sept. 8 at Owensboro Country Club.

JD Country Milk wins gold medal at state fair

JD Country Milk of Logan County has won the Gold Medal Award in the Non-Homogenized Full Fat Chocolate Milk category at the Kentucky State Fair going on in Louisville. JD Country Milk is located on Ellis Road between the Franklin and Nashville roads southeast of Russellville.  Fan John Flaherty wrote on Facebook, “Well deserved! Like liquid, chocolate ice cream.”

Large crowd attends FFA Back to School Bash

From LCHS FFA: Last night, the Logan County FFA Chapter kicked off the 2025-2026 school year by hosting our annual Back to School Bash. We are so glad all of our new and existing members were able to come together for a great meal and amazing games! We would also like to thank the following individuals for helping make this event possible: Meg VanSickle for allowing us to use her home and Joanna Coles, Jarrod Coles, Clacy White, Holly White, Gretchen Stokes, David Stokes, Samantha Allen and Micheal Allen for serving food.

Three Russellville High School seniors were recognized for being Governor’s Scholars at the RISD Board Meeting Tuesday night. They are Ella Kate Parrish and Aliza Wilson for being Governor’s Scholars as well as Leland Minosky for Governor’s Scholar for the Arts. Principal Drew Teel made the presentations.

Ag Educators award Bryan Estes special career honor

Bryan Estes, retired agriculture teacher and FFA Advisor at Logan County High School, was honored Friday in Louisville by the Kentucky Association of Agricultural Educators (KAAE) with the distinguished “Ag Teachers Change Lives” award. Often considered to be the "Ag Teachers' Hall of Fame," this award celebrates agricultural educators who have made a lasting impact on their students and communities. Shown, from left in the accompanying photo, are LCHS ag teachers present and retired. They are Jay Campbell, Bryan Estes, Dr. Wesley Estes and Doug Milliken.

Celebration of Life Services will be Saturday at Logan County Extension Office at 1 p.m. for Alexa Steersman, who died in an automobile accident in Auburn in mid-July. Her parents, Ronnie and Evelda Steersman, will be hosts with assistance from Kirby Funeral Services Russellville.

Daviess County wins Battle of the Panthers

After a relatively close first half (15-6), the Daviess County Panthers dominated the third quarter on the way to a 45-6 win over the Russellville Panthers in the first game of the Lewisburg Bank Bowl Friday. Jamarion Gordon scored the RHS touchdown on a four-yard run. Passes from quarterback Jerius Coleman to JaCoveon Temple-Dickerson and Labryan Nourse were effective for the host Panthers.

Helle leads Cougars’ come-from-behind win

Host Logan County’s only lead in the game came at the right time, as the Cougars came from behind to beat Hart County 19-15 in the second game of the Lewisburg Bank Bowl Friday. Junior running back Christian Helle scored two touchdowns, including the final one, for Coach Todd Adler’s team. The Cougars ran only one play in the first quarter, but it was a big one. Helle ran 51 yards for a touchdown, and Caiden Kirby kicked the tying point, but Hart led 15-6 at halftime.  It was the first regular-season loss since 2022 for the Raiders, who had won 22 straight games before postseason action.

RFD to dedicate Safe Haven Baby Box Tuesday

The public is invited to attend the dedication and blessing of Russellville’s Safe Haven Baby Box tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Russellville Fire Department at 620 North Main Street, beginning at 1 p.m. The fire department and the city are working with the Safe Haven program to provide a place where parents who aren’t able to care for their infants can make sure the child will have a safe home.

Cougars to face another quality opponent Friday

For the second straight week to start their 2025 season, the Logan County Cougars will entertain a quality football opponent. Last Friday they came from behind to end Hart County’s 22-game regular-season win streak. Friday they will take on McCracken County, a Class 6A school which is ranked in the Top Ten in the state despite having lost their opener giving up 48 points in the process. That loss was to powerful crosstown rival Paducah Tilghman, the defending Class 4A state champion which is in Logan’s district. Coach Tyler Brooks’ Mustangs are led by senior quarterback Maddox O’Neal, who passed for 2,896 yards and 41 touchdowns last season, and senior running back Landon Newman, who ran for 817 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2024. Against Hart County, Logan’s Christian Helle was a workhorse, carrying the ball 19 times for 142 yards and a pair of touchdowns. In his first varsity start, sophomore Luke Rogers completed 14 of 22 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown without an interception. Senior Isaac Christian caught 5 passes for 54 yards, TySean Thomeczek 3 for 27 yards, and Cooper Parker 2, one of them for a touchdown. Michael Hammonds totaled 11 tackles and Carson Carlock 10. Game time is 7 p.m.

Cougars lead McCracken in fourth quarter

Going into the fourth quarter, the Logan County Cougars lead a very good McCracken County team 19-9 at Cougar Field. Caiden Kirby has helped his team in every way possible with his kicking, including a punt to the one that led to a safety and a field goal late in the second quarter to build the lead to 10. Christian Helle has scored two touchdowns, Luke Rogers has thrown some key passes, and Isaac Christian, Cooper Parker, Elijah Sells and TySean Thomeczek are everywhere... Make that three touchdowns for Helle, who just scored with 10:02 remaining. Kirby's conversion makes the Cougar lead 26-9.

Cougars beat Mustangs 33-16

The Logan County Cougars ran their record to 2-0 on the young season by beating McCracken County 33-16 Friday at home. The clinching score came on a 17-yard halfback pass from Christian Helle to Cooper Parker late in the game. Coach Todd Adler's team will play the Clash of the Cats against Russellville at Rhea Stadium. The Panthers played well early in their game against Rockcastle County but the bigger school wore them down. A running clock started with Rockcastle leading 60-20 midway through the fourth quarter.

Cougar golf places high in strong field

From Logan County Golf Coach Will McKenzie: “Our Cougars showed grit and skill at the Region 1-4 Preview, finishing 6th out of 19 teams in a competitive field at Crosswinds Golf Course in Bowling Green Saturday. Proud of the team’s hard work and determination on a challenging course.” The team total was a solid 310. Shooting 75s were Davis Switzer and Riley Shepherd. The other two scores that counted were Karson Rodgers’ 78 and Jaxon Tichenor’s 82.
