Lady Cougars’ season ends despite Adler’s strong showing

Barren County’s 71-44 win over Logan County in the opening round of the Fourth Region Tournament Sunday at Diddle Arena made a trio truths clear: 1) The regional favorite Lady Trojans (30-2) are a very good team, which shoots and rebounds well while having several talented players; 2) Logan County sophomore Brenley Adler is one of the most outstanding players in the region, scoring a game-high 23 points while constantly working hard on both ends of the court; and 3) Coach Dedra Adler’s  very young team (no seniors, just two juniors) doesn’t quit when the odds are stacked very high against them, refusing to stop battling and keeping the winners from gaining a running clock, even though they led 17-2 to start the game. Junior Reece Wetton was the only Lady Cougar besides Adler to score for Logan in the first half. She finished with 11. Five Logan (17-16) players—Anslee Buchanan, Alissa Hampton, Addison Holloway, Marlee Boisseau and Avery Thompson—also scored. Shelby Byrd scored 15, Addyson McFall 14, and Ann Ashley Atkinson and Layla Harris 12 each for Coach Piper Lindsey’s Lady Trojans.

Cougars’ season ends at region

South Warren ‘s painfully rugged defense forced the Logan County Cougars into 20 turnovers that resulted in 28 points for the Spartans Wednesday in an opening round game of the Fourth Region Tournament at Diddle Arena. They also forced the Cougars into repeated missed shots. As a result, South won the game 57-44 to end the Cougars’ season. Even though Cougar star Davis Switzer was held scoreless the first quarter, behind the scoring of freshman JB Mctire the Cougars built a 19-14 lead, the last basket on a Switzer drive. But then he suffered a blow to the head on a foul that wasn’t called, and he seemed to struggle the rest of the half. The Spartans went on a 15-0 run.  Logan came back in the fourth quarter. When Jaxon Tichenor hit the team’s first 3-pointer with 2:40 remaining in the game, the Cougars pulled to within 46-40, but more turnovers ended the comeback there. Switzer (19) and Mctire (15). Coach Josh Frick’s team finished an excellent season with a 20-10 record, including 10-2 in the last 12 games.
