Tryouts slated for LC Middle Softball

Tryouts for Logan County Middle School Softball will be held May 22 on the softball field at LCHS. A parent meeting will begin at 5:45 p.m. with physical activities following. Girls in Logan County schools in the fifth through eighth grades are eligible. Property clothing and equipment should be brought to the tryouts, and updated physicals should be posted. For more information, contact Coach Phillip McKinney or assistant coach Michael Crawford at 270-772-4027.

deGraffenried Chorale’s first concert at new LCHS PAC

‘Notes of Nostalgia’ is the theme of the first ever deGraffenried Chorale concert at the new Logan County High School Performing Arts Center on Saturday, May 16, at 7 p.m. The group presented a concert of the same named eight years ago, and many of the chorus members are still part of it, including Director Mary Beth Dowden and accompanist Susan Fox.

Logan alums lead LWC to conference finals

With Nora Epley scoring the winning run on aggressive baserunning and Emerson McKinnis getting one of the winners’ four hits, the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders beat homestanding University of the Cumberlands 3-2 Friday to reach the finals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament Saturday. The Logan County High School graduates have been among the leaders all season for Lindsey Wilson, which is ranked 10th in the nation in NAIA softball, has won the conference regular season, and has been chosen to host part of the national tournament. McKinnis, who has been named first team all-conference catcher, helped ace Kayden Murray pitch a three-hit, no-walk, 8-strikeout jewel.

Penrod playing for berth in nationals today

Former standout Russellville Lady Panther Madison “Matt Matt” Penrod and her Kentucky Christian University Knights will play host Alice Lloyd College this evening for a berth in the National Christian College Athletic Association’s national softball tournament in Dallas. The two teams have each won a one-run game against each other to reach the finals. A sophomore who has been named All-Conference, Penrod is listed as a utility player, but she does a lot of the catching. She has played in 42 of the Knights’ 52 games and is batting .267 with 27 hits with a home run, a double. 12 RBIs  and 12 walks. She has stolen both bases she has attempted. She batted .333 with 12 extra base hits in 33 games as a freshman.

Schochoh Church of Christ to celebrate 130 years

A celebration of the congregation’s 130th anniversary will be held at Schochoh Church of Christ this Sunday beginning at 10:30 a.m. A tribute will be held to the late Mary Nelle Hutchison Chumley, whose first husband, John Hutcheson, was a long-time minister at Schochoh before his untimely death. The song leader will be former Schochoh minister Steve McCarley, and the speaker will be Bethany minister Harris Dockins, whose family were part of Schochoh while his dad, Frank Dockins Jr., was the minister. A fellowship meal will be held afterwards.

Cougars advance in district baseball

Coach Ethan Meguiar’s Logan County Cougars find themselves in a familiar role tonight. As is the case almost every year, Logan will play host Franklin-Simpson in the 13th District finals. The Cougars held off Todd Central 4-2 Monday while F-S beat Russellville 12-2. Both teams from the Land of Logan were eliminated in softball. Russellville lost an 8-7 heartbreaker in eight innings to Todd while Franklin survived a 3-1 win over Logan County.

End of school activities abound in city schools

Beginning with the kindergarten Do-Not-Cry Breakfast Thursday morning and ending with the Russellville High School Graduation Saturday morning, there’s lots to do as the school year ends for Russellville Independent Schools. On the attached schedule, you can find an Awards Ceremony Thursday for first through fourth graders at Stevenson Elementary School, the last day for students Friday, the Senior Walk at Stevenson, the Russellville Middle School Award/Graduation Ceremonies Friday, and then the RHS graduation Saturday.

F-S beats Logan for district title

Jordan Brandon pitched a two-hit, one-walk jewel for Franklin-Simpson Tuesday at their Greg Shelton Field on the way to a 5-2 victory over the Logan County Cougars in the 13th District Baseball Tournament finals. Starting Cougar pitcher TySean Thomeczek wasn’t as sharp as usual, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 4 each of hits and walks. Mason Hancock allowed no runs on no hits and a walk in the final inning. Thomeczek tripled in Odin Wood with one of the Cougar runs, and he scored the other. Liam Costello got the other hit. Landon Gregory earned the Cougars’ only walk. Gregory and Lyndon Wilson were hit by pitches. Four sophomores were named all-season. They are Gregory, Wilson, Thomeczek and Jonas Hayes, who pitched a 1-hit, 2-run, 3-walk, 10-strikeout jewel over Todd Central in the semifinals.

LCHS Commencement tonight at WKU

The Logan County High School Class of 2026 will graduate tonight. Commencement exercises will be held at Diddle Arena on the campus of Western Kentucky University. A total of 209 seniors are expected to graduate.

Cougars draw Russell County at region

Thirteenth District Runner-up Logan County is scheduled to play 16th District Champion Russell County at 12:15 Monday in the 4th Region Baseball Tournament. As usual, all four first round games will be played on the WKU baseball field. The Cougars (19-17 overall, 11-12 region) have a .53979 RPI and are ranked fifth in the region. The Lakers (16-21, 8-7) are ranked tenth with a .48970. With a win, Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team would go against the Barren County-Bowling Green survivor. Even though the Purples have the top RPI in the region, they are a district runner-up, having lost to Greenwood in the district. Second-rated Franklin-Simpson plays Monroe County. Rain is forecast in the area for the next five days.

Logan Little League stars to be named Saturday

From Greg Meacham: The Logan County Little League Tournament has been canceled due to inclement weather. On Saturday, May 23 at 2 p.m., the Little League will formally recognize the 1st and 2nd place teams at the Little League field, followed immediately by the announcement of all-star team selections. The Little League extends heartfelt thanks to all parents, grandparents, and fans for making this year a success.

Chloe Penrod receives Kelly Russell Scholarship

The winner of the Kelly Russell Scholarship at Russellville High School in 2026 is Chloe Penrod. An all-round athlete, Penrod played softball for four years, soccer for three years and basketball one year. She has earned many athletic awards. An outstanding student, she graduated fifth in her class this year with a 4.0 GPA. Her future plans include attending Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College to finish her associates degree. She will then transfer to WKU and major in family consumer sciences or social work. Kelly Russell was a popular star athlete at RHS who lost his life in a sports activity while wearing his Panther baseball uniform.

McKinnis earns Academic All-District honors

Sophomore catcher Emerson McKinnis has been named Academic All-District in softball by the College Sports Communicators organization. The honor signifies that a player is one of the “nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.” McKinnis and fellow Logan County High School alum Nora Epley held Lindsey Wilson University Softball win their conference championship, be ranked din the Top Ten in the nation in NAIA, and host a regional postseason tournament.

Concerts @ Carrico to begin Friday

The first of four free Concerts at Carrico in Russellville is planned for Friday evening, sponsored by the Logan County Chamber of Commerce. Performing at 7 p.m. will be the band Dizzorderly Conduct. This year, the concerts will also feature Tyrone Dunn & Kin-Foke, Sixty-Eight Eighty The Band, and Kendra Remedios. Anyone interest in attending is invited to bring a chair and ‘kick back while you enjoy live music and food truck vendors.”

Kids’ Day of Fishing at Coon Range

A Kids' Day of Fishing will be held Saturday, June 6, at Coon Range Fish & Game Club, 1283 Coon Range Lake Road, Lewisburg. Memberships are available for families, but this event is open to anyone ages 14 and under. Food and prizes will be involved. All fishing will be from the bank.
