Todd come back to beat Logan 27-16

Logan County led visiting Todd Central 16-7 a minute into the third quarter Friday, but the Rebels dominated the rest of the game on the way to a 27-16 win matching a pair of 0-2 teams. Anthony Oberhausen & Gage Hales combined for 142 yards rushing and each scored a touchdown for the Cougars. Landon Stratton kicked a field goal and an extra point. Taylor Blakemore returned an interception 59 yards early in the game and he later caught a 42-yard pass from Justin Rone.Kicks were blocked byMason Robertson & Tyler Wood. Bryce Shanklinran for 86 yards and a touchdown for CoachBryan Jones'Rebels. He also threw a touchdown pass toJalyn Henry. Bronson Masseyran for two touchdowns. Brett Bostic pulled in a key interception for the winners.

Celebrate and Serve event Thursday

The entire Christian community is being urged to attend an event at Crossroads Church near City-County Park in Russellville Thursday at 6:30 p.m. "Celebrate and Serve" is designed to raise awareness of the financial, physical and psychological needs of children throughout Russellville and Logan County. Through testimonies and music, planners hope to raise money and personal support for children in need. Crossroads pastor Chris Cowan has been a spokesman for the project, but Family Resource and Yourth Service Center directors all over the county are involved, as are many churches and the Leadership Logan class. A large turnout is anticipated and welcomed.

CrimeStoppers Golf Scramble Sept. 15

The CrimeStoppers Golf Scramble will be held Saturday, Sept. 15 at Rolling Hills Golf Course. Preregister or register at the course at 7:30 a.m. before an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Entries at $40 each include golf cart and greens fee. Teams will be four-member. Mulligans can be purchased. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams and closest to the hole. Falcons hold off visiting RHS 34-27

In a game with over 700 yards total offense, Fort Campbell held off visiting Russellville 34-27 Friday. The Panthers kept tying the score in the second half on a run by quarterback Barrett Croslin and his 4-yard pass to Josh Hampton. A dropped Panther pass and a 47-yard run by the Falcons led to the winning touchdown with 7:48 remaining. Demarcus Hampton of RHS rushed for 129 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Zach Hines added 72 yards on 16 rushes, and he also scored.

Logan girls soccer now 3-1

The Logan County Lady Cougars beat Glasgow 2-1 to start the Pink Out evening at home Thursday. The win was especially meaningful to Coach Daniel McCarley, who is a former Glasgow coach. This was the third straight 2-1 score for the Lady Cougars, who have won two of them and are now 3-1 on the season. The Cougars of Coach Eric Evans dropped from the undefeated ranks with a 4-2 district loss to Franklin-Simpson in the nightcap.

Football teams on the road tonight

Both local high school teams will be on the road tonight. Coach John Myers will take his Russellville Panthers to the military base to play one of their toughest traditional opponents, Fort Campbell while Coach Dain Gregory and his Logan County Cougars will head just across the county line to play South Warren. Both games start at 7 p.m. WRUS will air the Panther-Falcon game live and will broadcast the taped account of the Cougar-Spartan contest at 2:05 p.m. Saturday.

Lady Cougars beat F-S for 67th straight district win

The Logan County Lady Cougars won on the road at Franklin-Simpson Thursday, their 67th straight district volleyball win. This one was different, though, since it was the first best-three-of-five district match ever for LCHS. The Lady Cougars won 25-9, 25-6, 25-10 to improve their record to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in the district. Assistant Coach Rob Imlay notes that the last district loss by the Logan girls came on Aug. 17, 2004 against Franklin.

Concert, buffet meal offered tonight

A picnic style buffet meal and concert are being offered tonight at the Historic Logan County Courthouse. Rosemary Cundiff Brown & Chris Kramer will be in concert after the meal is served. The meal starts at 6 p.m. with the concert to follow. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Call 726-3801 or 726-3787 to reserve a ticket. It's sponsored by REC.

Pink Out planned by LCHS soccer

A full evening of soccer Thursday at Logan County High School will be accompanied by a Pink Out to support the American Cancer Society. The Lady Cougars (2-1)will entertain Glasgow at 5:30 p.m. and the undefeated Cougars of Coach Eric Evans will take on Franklin-Simpson. Meanwhile a parade of survivors, games, face painting, food sales and a silent auction will be held to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The event honors the late Christy Phillips, who was a soccer parent.

Logan shows strength against RHS

Russellville's 25-19, 25-13 win over district rival Franklin-Simpson gave Coach Terricka Quarles' team hope for an upset at Logan County Tuesday. It wasn't to be. Logan was in the attack mode from the opening point in a 25-10, 25-8 win. Coach Steven Lyne's team recorded 18 kills with Chanler Steenbergen getting 5, Katelyn Jones & Rebecca Dezarn 4 each, Megan Griggs 3 and Maddie Abbott 2. Rachyl Miller led with 12 assists and 4 aces. Victoria Cates & Abbott each had 5 digs. Logan plays at F-S Thursday night.

Lady Cougars edge F-S in extra period

Brittany Barton fired a goal over the head of Franklin-Simpson goalkeeper Sara McAbee 1:20 into the first extra period to lead the Logan County Lady Cougars to a 2-1 win over visiting Franklin-Simpson Monday. Logan had controlled the ball most of the game, taking 12 shots on goal to 1 in the first half, but trailed 1-0 at the intermission on a goal by Madelyn Biggs. Claire Hopkins scored the first Logan goal. Coach Daniel McCarley complimented his team's defense, especially that of Taleia Mason & Samantha Rittenberry. The Lady Cougars (2-1) entertain Glasgow Thursday.

Bears dominate 2nd half over Logan

Visiting Butler County scored 20 points in the 3rd quarter on the way to a 27-13 win over Logan County Friday night. The Cougars led 13-7 at the half after Ian Woodall sacked Bears quarterback Elijah Flener on one pass and then threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Blakemore on the next. The Bears picked off five interceptions. Justin Rone scored the game's first TD for Logan, and Matt Moore caught a pair of TD passes for Butler. Flener threw for 4 TD's and 112 yards. Woodall passed for 172 yards.
Russellville scored 18 points in the fourth quarter at Rhea Stadium to beat Trigg County 2514. The LoJo will have more details Saturday.

Races contested for cities' mayors

Adairville and Auburn citizens will be asked to choose between candidates for mayor on Nov. 6. Incumbent mayor Jim Wilkerson is seeking a third term and is opposed again by Councilwoman Donna Blake. Long-time Auburn mayor Dewey Roche is not seeking another term. Vying for that role are councilmen Mike Hughes & Wayne Thomas along with former candidate Maxie Rittenberry. Both cities also have nine candidates for the six council seats. Russellville had 10 council candidates registered by the January deadline. On the other hand, Lewisburg has only three council candidates. A complete list of candidates will appear in an article on The LoJo.

Three LCHS teams record wins

A trio of Logan County teams have recorded victories this week. The boys soccer team of Coach Eric Evans crushed Warren Central 10-0. Coach Daniel McCarley's Lady Cougars got a soccer win over Warren Central 6-3 Tuesday before losing to Muhlenberg County 2-1 Thursday. The volleyball team ran its record to 7-1 win a win over South Warren. This match was unusual in that it was best 3 of 5. Logan won 25-23, 18-25, 25-17, 25-20. Assistant Coach Rob Imlay explains that postseason matches will be 3 of 5 like college, so an attempt is being made to get experience in the extended matches.

Lady Panthers beat East for 1st win

The Russellville Lady Panthers got their first volleyball win Tuesday, beating a Warren East team which had earlier won over RHS district rival Franklin-Simpson. Coach Terricka Quarles directed her team to a 19-25, 2518, 25-21 win over East. RHS does not report individual stats. Seniors include Kathleen Noe & Nathasha Haskins and juniors are Kayla Costellow, Khalia Hampton, Sydney Herndon, Shea Hampton, Davonna Sydnor & Jayla Townsend. The Lady Panthers open district play at Franklin Thursday.

 

 

 

Lady Cougars get lopsided district win

The Logan County Lady Cougars started their district season Tuesday with a lopsided win over Todd Central, 25-2, 258. Chanler Steenbergen had 11 attacks and 6 kills while Megan Griggs totaled 8 and 5. Rachyl Miller set up 10 shots with assists and Brittany Harper led with 4 digs.

Coaches named for RMS soccer team

Russellville High School, which has not been able to field a varsity soccer team the last two years, will attempt to have a middle school team in 2012. The first practice will be held Thursday from 3:30-5 p.m. The new coaches are also new teachers at the school. Kathryn Crawford from Pulaski Count, and Chelsey Veatch, from Greenwood "both have a strong soccer background and really want to see the program succeed," says Principal Kim McDaniel. "We hope we have enough students participate to complete a strong, solid roster."

Carmen Tisdale named to RHS SBDM

New member Carmen Tisdale will be part of her first meeting as a member of the Russellville High School Site Based Decision Making Council Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the RHS library. She was elected to replace fellow parent Mary Celsor, who had resigned recently.

Logan volleyball wins 4 of 5 at Apollo

The Logan County Lady Cougars won 4 of 5 matches in the Owensboro Apollo volleyball tournament this weekend to finish fifth among 24 teams. Assistant Coach Rob Imlay reports that LCHS beat Whitesville Trinity and Hopkins County Central to reach the Gold Bracket. Logan lost to Green County in Saturday's first match, but then won over Henderson County and Apollo, both in three games. Coach Steven Lyne's team is now 5-1 on the season.

Lady Cougars sweep Central in opener

After their freshmen and JV teams won, the Logan County Lady Cougars' varsity beat visiting Warren Central 25-15, 25-13 Thursday. Rebecca Dezarn had 5 kills with Megan Griggs, Chanler Steenbergen and Ohio County trasfer Katelyn Jones each getting 4. Rachyl Miller totaled 16 assists and 6 digs. Steenbergen led with 7 digs while Madison Abbott added 5 and Victoria Cates & Brittany Harper 4 each.

Hendricks seeks another term in Georgia

Logan County High School graduate Joe W. Hendricks is seeking another term as district attorney in the Appalachian Circuit of Georgia. He and his wife Kaye live in Talking Rock, Ga. He is a graduate of Berry College in Georgia and was in private law practice from 1998 until he was first elected in 2004.

8th of August celebration opens tonight

The opening ceremony for the annual 8th of August Emancipation Celebration will be held in a gospel service Thursday evening at Mt. Zion Baptist Church on South Morgan Street in Russellville. Rev. Devin West will be the master of ceremonies and will also conduct the Logan County Community Choir in the song service. A spiritual message will be brought outside the church by guest speaker Rev. Jeremy Meriweather, pastor of Gracey Baptist Church.

LCHS volleyball, RHS football at home tonight

The Logan County Lady Cougars open their 3012 volleyball season today against visiting Warren Central. Coach Steven Lyne's team finished its season last year in its accustomed place, the regional finals. The freshman match starts at 5:30 p.m. with JV and Varsity to follow.
The Russellville Panthers will entertain Glasgow in a preseason football game at Rhea Stadium at 6 p.m. Glasgow was state runner-up in Class 2A last year. Coach John Meyer's Panthers reached the second round of the Class 1A playoffs. Admission is $2.

Slack, Morris take SKY swim honors

Two swimmers from Russellville won High Point Awards at the South Central Swimming and Diving Championships at Greenville Country Club in late July. Benjamin Slack won in the boys 9-10 age group while Maggie Morris was tops in the girls 6 and under. Also swimming were Lilly Morris, Sophie Morris and Campbell Bush. Slack and the Morrises are part of SKY Swim Club, coached by Dee Wilkins. Russellville Country Club no longer has its own swim team..

Bowling Green Tech English course moved

The English 101 class being offered by Bowling Green Technical College in Russellville this fall has been moved to the Russellville High School Computer Lab. It will meet from 5:30-8 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning next week. Diane Wood Wilkins is the instructor. As of Wednesday morning, 13 students were enrolled in the class. Whitfield to be in Russellville Wednesday

Congressman Ed Whitfield will be in Russellville Wednesday at 2 p.m. for a ceremony at Dr. Brian Humble's Community Health Center on the Hopkinsville Road. He plans to attend the Elkton Rotary Club meeting prior to his appearance in Logan County.

Russellville schools to open year Tuesday

Russellville City Schools open for the 2012-13 school year on Tuesday. New RHS principal Kim McDaniel has announced the following: "Students may begin entering the building at 7:30 a.m. The first bell rings at 8:08 with the final tardy bell ringing at 8:15. Tuesday, all students will report immediately to their homeroom teachers, since there is no breakfast being served. Students will receive a new schedule and will be able to turn in forms and student fees to their homeroom teachers. They will also be given their student planners to use for the year. Teachers will also introduce and review our new hallway procedures during this time as hallway transitions has been named as our school's focus area with our Safe and Civil school plan. They will then report to a modified 1st and 2nd periods with regular schedule resuming at 3rd period."

Paul Sansom, Blands in Kentucky Open golf

Russellville's Paul Sansom will play in the Kentucky Open golf tournament at Traditions Golf Club in Hebron, starting Tuesday. The Middle Tennessee State University golfer will be joined by the Blann brothers, Jordan and Seth, of Bowling Green, sons of RHS graduate Donna Lewis Blann. The second round will be Wednesday with the final round Thursday.

Joe Blanton traded from Phillies to LA Dodgers

One of new Russellville baseball coach Greg Shelton's star players has been traded to another major league team. Joe Blanton, who pitched for Shelton at Franklin-Simpson, was the starting pitcher for the Phillies in 100 games. He is 8-9 this year and 34-25 overall for Philladelphia. He pitched in two World Series. He joins former Phillie Shane Vixtorino as a new Dodger.

BG Tech offering English course in R'ville

Bowling Green Technical College is offering English 101 at the Logan County Extension Office on Tuesdays from 5:30-8;15 p.m. The class begins Aug. 14. The teacher will be RHS graduate Diane Wood Wilkins. This is the third straight semester a class has been offered in Logan County. Tickets on sale for WKU, UofL game in Nashville

Tickets for the Dec. 22 basketball game between Western Kentucky and Louisville at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville are now on sale and can be purchased through the WKU Ticket Office by phone at 1-800-5-BIG RED or 745-5222 locally. Tickets in the lower level and club level are $35, and upper level tickets are $20. On the day of the game, the first 100 WKU students with a valid WKU ID card will enter free. All tickets ordered before Oct. 1 will be fulfilled by HAF priority rank. WKU and Louisville begin a new four-year series with the game. The Bluegrass State rivals have played in each of the last four seasons, and WKU leads the all-time series 39-36. Louisville finished last season in the Final Four.

Crittenden Drive series on 'Fruits of the Spirit' begins

Crittenden Drive Church of Christ is conducting a nine-week series on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. on the topic "Fruits of the Spirit," based on Galatians 5:22-23. Tonight's speaker on the topic Kindness will be Steve Hunter of Tompkinsville.The speaker and topic for the next eight weeks can be found on the Community Calendar of The LoJo. Among the speakers will be Dr. Jim Selby, president of Hopkinsville Community College, and former Crittenden Drive minister Andrew Phillips of Columbia, Tenn.
