The Logan County Adult Education staff has launched its new civics class. These classes are designed to assist students that are interested in becoming U. S. citizens.

After receiving a $15,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education, ELL (formerly known as ESL) instructor Sharyl Markham has been ordering class materials, hired an assistant and began scheduling classes.  Mark explains, “Classes are offered at the Professional Learning Center on 121 South Spring Street, on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:45-6:45. Ann Palmer is on site to assist in our Family Literacy Program, so children of program participants are welcome.  We are also offering two new classes on site, Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m..noon  These classes are both civic and Spanish GED classes.  If interested parties have more than five in their group, our staff can set up classes off site, a home or church for example.  I travel quite a bit in Logan County to meet the demand for these classes.”  All classes are free to the public.

Hopefully, this civics grant is the first step toward students becoming a central location for citizenship resources.  There have been many changes and more immigrants may be eligible for citizenships.  If you are interested in attending these classes or know of someone who is interested, please contact Logan County Adult Education at 726-8777.  Ask for Sharyl Markham or Ann Palmer.

Logan County Adult Literacy is a non-profit agency that is partially funded by a grant from United Way of Southern Kentucky and through generous donations.
