Country club open houses this weekend

Open houses are planned this Saturday and Sunday afternoons for prospective members to see improvements which have been made to the Russellville Country Club clubhouse and to learn about plans for the club, which was sold at auction by the previous membership this fall to Emmett Bonamarte. In an interview with Don Neagle on WRUS Wednesday, the Illinois resident said that his sister, Katie Morrison, is heading membership development and that his brother-in-law, Joe Morrison, is general manager. The Morrisons have been Russellville residents for about a decade, and Bonamarte plans to move here. Bonamarte is bringing in a professional chef to operate the restaurant and a golf pro. A variety of membership plans are available, including for young families and those under age 30. The open houses will be from noon to 7 p.m. each day.

Panthers beat F-S, move to 4-0 in district

Tanner Clark outscored Russellville's Barrett Croslin 35-24 Tuesday, but the Panthers outscored visiting F-S 67-59 to run their district record to 4-0. Clark was fantastic all night, but Croslin had 16 points in the first half and 8 in the fourth quarter. Croslin, who scored 6 straight points in the fourth quarter to give the Panthers the lead for good. got a lot of help from senior center Jordan Kennedy, who added 21 despite drawing his second foul in the first four minutes of the game. The Panthers hit 6 free throws in the final 30 seconds. Clark hit six 3-pointers and went 7 for 7 at the line. He scored at least 6 points in every quarter. The game marked the return of Zach Hines from several weeks' absence from a broken wrist, but guard Coco Darden is apparently lost for the season with an arm injury. Coach Phil Todd's Panthers travel Friday to Logan County, whose game with Daviess County was called off Tuesday.

RHS football chili supper set Tuesday

A chili supper sponsored by Modern Woodmen of America will be held Tuesday, Jan. 29, from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Russellville High School cafeteria in conjunction with the Russellville basketball games against visiting Franklin-Simpson. Donations will be accepted in this fund raiser for RHS football.

RHS edges Daviess by a point Saturday

Only a few hours after they had beaten South Warren in overtime, the Russellville Panthers held off visiting Daviess County 60-59 Saturday afternoon. Coach Phil Todd's team led 48-40 after three quarters, but they had to hang tough to win. Jordan Kennedy hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points in the fourth quarter on the way to 17 points. Christian Naylor & Darrion Quarles each added 16. Chase Whitmore scored 9 of his 20 points for Daviess in the fourth quarter, and Tim Bickel picked up 10 of his 18 in the third quarter.

Panthers beat South in overtime

Sophomore sub Lee McMurray hit a layup at the overtime buzzer on an assist from Christian Naylor to give the Russellville Panthers a 58-56 win over South Warren Friday. Coach Phil Todd's team came from behind repeatedly and played most of the game without guard Coco Darden, who injured his elbow in the first quarter. Jordan Kennedy scored 17 points to lead RHS to a homecoming sweep. Travis Hardcastle led three double figure scorers with 20 points for Coach Derrick Clubb's Spartans.

Lady Cougars come back to beat South

Down by 14 points in the third quarter, Coach Dedra Adler's Russellville Lady Panthers came back to beat visiting South Warren 52-50 Friday at homecoming. Khalia Hampton rebounded a blocked shot and put the ball in the basket for the winning points with 5 seconds. Amber Sydnor hit all 7 of her second-half free throws on the way to 24 points. After the game, the six-year starter was named homecoming queen. Colby Downing hit three 3-pointers in the 4th quarter for Coach Ken Waddell's Lady Spartans and finished with 20 points. Zach Hines, who has been out almost two months with a broken wrist, not only was named homecoming king but also returned to the floor in uniform.

Donations needed for All Dressed Up event

Community donations of prom-related items are being sought for the 2013 Annual All Dressed Up event to be held Saturday, March 9. Teenage girls are invited to attend, to get free items to wear to prom and other dress-up occasions. This will be held at New Life Baptist Church west of Auburn near Southern Outdoor Furniture. Items needed are prom dresses, shoes, handbags and wraps, jewelry, lighted makeup mirrors and makeup trays, and hair styling tools such as curling irons and flat irons. Items to be used as door prizes are also needed. If you would like to contribute to this cause, bring items by the church on Saturday, Feb. 9 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. or call 542-8694. South Warren at RHS games still on

Friday night’s doubleheader between visiting South Warren and Russellville will still be held at Jim Young Gymnasium, according to RHS Athletic Director Nathan Thompson. This school is partnering this week with the American Heart Association to bring more awareness to heart disease and related conditions for the RHS campus. The culminating event will a "white out" and sale of $10 tee shirts with proceeds going to the AHA.

Cartas' college signing moved to Tuesday

The signing ceremony to honor Logan County catcher Dustin Cartas as he commits to play baseball for Murray State University has been postponed from Friday because of weather concerns. Athletic Director Hugh McReynolds says the new time will Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 2:15 p.m. at Logan County High School.

New State Senator Whitney Westerfield is scheduled to speak at the Logan Lincoln Day Dinner this Saturday at the Sportsman Club in Russellville. City police conduct mock intruder drill at RHS

In conjunction with the Russellville City Police department, Russellville High School conducted a “mock-intruder” lock-down drill on the RHS campus Wednesday morning. "This was a good learning experience, as it has given us insight on things that are being done well and issues/concerns that need to be addressed concerning our safety procedures. This was a very realistic procedure," says Principal Kim McDaniel.

Hardison leads Logan past Glasgow

Sophomore Meagann Hardison hit five 3-pointers in the first half and seven straight free throws in the fourth quarter to lead the Logan County Lady Cougars to a 65-60 win at Barren County Tuesday. Four straight free throws by Laura Hunt gave Logan the lead for keeps with 2:50 remaining. Abbey Hinton had 19 points and 9 rebounds, and Megan Lindsey had 9 points and 6 rebounds. Katelyn Jones hit a goal near the buzzer to give Logan a lead going into the last quarter. Freshman Deanie Pedigo led the Trojanettes with 19 points and Kaitlyn Wyatt added 16, but Logan held leading scorer Kelsey Cummings to 3 points before she fouled out.

Cartas to play baseball for Murray State

Logan County High School senior Dustin Cartas will sign his National Letter of Intent to play college baseball on Friday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. in the Commons Area at the school, according to Athletic Director Hugh McReynolds. Cartas, a four year starter for the Cougars, has chosen to continue his baseball career at Murray State University.

RHS homecoming raising heart awareness

Russellville High School is partnering this week with the American Heart Association to bring more awareness to heart disease and related conditions for the RHS campus. The culminating event will a "white out" during the home basketball game on Friday night with South Warren. During this time, the school will recognize heart disease survivors, as well. T-shirts for the "white out" can be purchased this week at school. Principal Kim McDaniel says, "Please purchase a shirt to help RHS raise money for this worthy organization and to show your Panther support during our 'white-out' event."

Super Bowl to become the HarbaughBowl

Two men who know Southcentral Kentucky well will be coaching against each other in the NFL's Super Bowl in New Orleans in two weeks. And they just happen to be brothers. After Coach Jim Harbaugh's San Francisco 49ers upset the top-seeded Atlanta Falcons 28-34 in Atlanta Sunday afternoon, Coach John Harbaugh's Baltimore Ravens knocked off perennial Super Bowl participant New England 28-13 in Foxboro, Mass. that night. They are the sons of Jack Harbaugh, who coached Western Kentucky University to the 2002 Division I-AA national championship, and his wife, Jackie. Jim was an official assistant coach on The Hill and was the one who recruited the man who revived WKU football, Willie Taggart, to Bowling Green. They are the brothers-in-law of Indiana University basketball coach Tom Crean, who met and married Joanie Harbaugh while he was an assistant coach at Western.

Panthers lose to Glasgow in A region

Glasgow built a 30-19 halftime lead and held on for a 57-47 win over Russellville in the boys semifinals of the 4th Region All A Classic at Clinton County Friday. Trey Tinsley scored 18 and Miles Norris 16 for Coach John Tinsley's Scotties. Coco Darden scored 13, Jordan Kennedy 12 and Josh Hampton 10 for the Panthers.

Cougars lose another close one on Friday

For the fourth straight Friday night, the Logan County Cougars lost in the final moments of a basketball game. After losing three overtime games on successive Fridays, Coach Lonnie Mason's team fell at Franklin-Simpson when Demaris Payne put in a rebound shot with 2.6 seconds remaining for a 53-52 F-S win. Torin Graham, who scored 23 points for Logan, got a long shot off but it missed. Kevin Flippin scored 13 and Tanner Clark for the Wildcats.
The Lady Cougars had trouble scoring, losing 50-35 to the Lady Cats. Logan's Meagann Hardison led all scorers with 14 points. Autumn Babb had 10 and Sydney Gooch 9 for Coach Josh Matthews' F-S team.

Panthers play Class A semifinals tonight

Coach Phil Todd's Russellville Panthers will play Glasgow at 6 p.m. Friday night at Clinton County in the semifinals of the All A Regional at Clinton County. The Panthers won at Cumberland County 82-77 Wednesday to reach the semis. The finals will be Saturday with the winner of the RHS game facing tonight's Monroe County-Clinton County winner. The Lady Panthers were eliminated Thursday by defending regional champion Glasgow 72-53. Coach Dedra Adler's RHS team will entertain Edmonson County tonight in a JV/Varsity doubleheader.

Survey being conducted for airport

The current FAA Airport Improvement Project (AIP) for the Russellville-Logan County Airport involves completion of a justification study for extending the runway from its current 4,000 feet length to 5,000 feet. The purpose of the extension is to get the runway long enough for small business jets to use. The board is working with the aviation engineering firm Garver Engineering, whose office is in Brentwood, Tenn. Garver Engineering has extensive experience in airport design and planning. As part of the study, Garver has prepared an airport usage survey which board members are currently distributing to Logan County businesses. The board includes newly appointed Steve Ramsey. “If the results of the study are favorable, then the next step will be to apply to the FAA for the runway extension project funding,” says Board Chairman Steve Dilliha.

Lady Panthers advance in All A region

Russellville's girls recorded an impressive win Monday, beating Cumberland County 74-54 in the Class A Region at Clinton County. Senior Amber Sydnor hit 13 of 15 free throw attempts on the way to 28 points. Khalia Hampton scored 18, Nathanshia Haskins 11, Davonna Sydnor 9, Davonya Bryant 7 and Shea Hampton 1. "Our press worked well. We forced lots of turnovers and played good team basketball," says Coach Dedra Adler. "I had to play some young girls on the bench and they came in and helped." The Lady Panthers play Coach Justin Stinson's defending regional overall champion Glasgow team Wednesday. The Panthers' scheduled game against Cumberland County was postponed because of weather both Monday and Tuesday. Now they are scheduled to meet Wednesday on Cumberland County's home court.

BG Tech becomes SKYCTC

A new name became official this month for what has long been known as Bowling Green Technical College. "BG Tech" is now South Central Kentucky Community & Technical College or SKYCTC. President Nathan Hodges, who is retiring this summer, explains the name has been changed "to honor and recognize our entire 10-county region and highlight the comprehensive mission of providing technical and transfer education, adult education and workforce training." The BGTC name will still be used often this semester as the change is effected and promoted.

Russellville's game with Ohio County Saturday has been canceled, Athletic Director Nathan Thompson has announced. The Panthers and Lady Panthers will still play Cumberland County at Clinton County tonight even though weather forecasts have caused some concerns.

Cougars drop another close game Saturday

Hopkins County Central built a 37-32 halftime advantage and held on for a 70-69 win over the visiting Logan County Cougars Saturday, four days after the HCC girls had beaten LCHS in double overtime and one night after the Cougars lost at Todd Central in OT. Landon Stratton scored 15, Torin Graham 14 and Ben Wright 11 for the Cougars. Taylor Blakemore & Wright each had 7 rebounds and Tahmir Graham 6. Jonathan Jones totaled 38 points and 11 rebounds for the Storm. The Cougars unquestionably lost the game at the foul line. The winners hit 27 of 50 free throws, the Cougars a paltry 9 of 23. Blakemore and Adam Wilkins both fouled out. Ten Cougars played 11 or more minutes as Coach Lonnie Mason rested the starters after the tough night on Friday. They included John Wilson Coots, J.R. Morrow, Tucker Baldwin, Clint Knight, Stratton, Blakemore, Wilkins, Wright and the Graham brothers.

Logan girls upset Todd; F-S holds off RHS

The Logan County Lady Cougars won a district game Friday while the Russellville Lady Panthers won a half. Meagann Hardison hit 4 free throws late, got some key assists to Abbey Hinton and led the defense in shutting out Todd Central standout Ariel Johnson the first three quarters to lead LCHS to a 39-36 win. Hardison and Hinton each scored 12, Megan Lindsey 7 and Taleia Mason 6 for Logan. Madison Alvis played a key defensive role. Johnson got all 10 of her points for Todd in the fourth quarter. Alicia Salazar also scored 10 and Julia Fox 6.
The Lady Panthers outscored host Franklin-Simpson 25-24 in the second half, but Coach Josh Matthews' Lady Cats had led 19-3 after a quarter and 31-15 at intermission on the way to a 55-40 F-S win. Amber Sydnor scored 16 and Nathanshia Haskins10, but the Lady Cats held Khalia Hampton to 5. Megan Krantz led F-S with 12 points. Tasia Covington added 10, and Sydney Gooch 9.

Concerned Citizens offers free desks

Concerned Citizens of Russellville/Logan County has received 16 desks to use where needed. They were given to the group which helps young people in many ways by the national Feed the Children organization. "We're going to keep one for ourselves and then donate them to groups which help those in need," says Executive Director Doris Vick. Groups which have the need for a desk and assist others can apply for a desk by contacting Concerned Citizens at 725-8721.

Diddle Media Room to be named for Just

Longtime WKU Sports Information Director Paul Just will be recognized Saturday for nearly 50 years of service on the Hill with the naming of the E.A. Diddle Arena Media Room in his honor during a pregame ceremony before WKU's men's basketball game against Florida Atlantic at 7 p.m. Since 1966, Just has been involved in sports information and media relations at WKU, including working as Sports Information Director from 1978 until 2002. Just has remained active, working part-time in the athletic media relations office and serving on the Board of Directors for the Alumni W-Club. "When looking at the rich history of WKU Athletics, Paul Just's name is not only prominent as one of its chief storytellers but also as a key figure in the bloodlines of the university," WKU Director of Athletics Todd Stewart said. "With nearly five decades of service at the university, Paul has not only worked with some of the legendary Hilltopper and Lady Topper coaches and student-athletes but has also been a part of some of the most recognizable moments in our history.” Hailing from Greenville, Just earned his degree from WKU in 1969. He joins Johnny Oldham and Bobby Rascoe as honorees during 50 years of Diddle Arena.

Panthers win, others lose close games

The Russellville Panthers were the only winners among Land of Logan teams Tuesday, but the other three lost close games. Coach Phil Todd's Panthers won at Greenwood 54-39. Earlier the Lady Panthers were tied with the Lady Gators at halftime and at the end of regulation, but Greenwood won 66-50 in overtime. The Logan County boys fell 78-66 at Butler County. It was the fifth straight win for Coach Calvin Dockery's Bears. Hopkins County Central hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into a second overtime, and Ja'Leigh Smith sank a free throw with no time on the clock as the Storm beat the Lady Cougars 52-51 in the only home game of the four.

McDonald's to assist Concerned Citizens

A percentage of food sales at the Russellville McDonald's Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. will be donated to Concerned Citizens of Russellville-Logan County. Executive Director Doris Vick says the funds will be used to assist in the Concerned Citizens Tutorial Program.

CharacterWorks students to be honored

CharacterWorks Unified Logan County will recognize all the students who have been nominated as CharacterWorks Students of the Month. They are from Adairville, Lewisburg, Chandlers, Stevenson, and Russellville Middle/High School. Jr. Pro registration, evaluations next week

Logan County Jr. Pro Basketball sign-ups and evaluation days are set for Saturday, Jan. 19 and Sunday, Jan. 20 at Logan County High School. The league is for boys and girls first grade through sixth grade. The cost is $40 for the first child in a household and $35 for every additional child in the household if sign-up is completed before early registration deadline on Jan.16. Add $5 per child after that date. Registration forms are available at the schools in the county and Russellville systems from physical education teachers. RHS sweeps Logan in pair of close games

In a night of games that were close all the way, Russellville's basketball teams swept a pair of thrillers from visiting Logan County in the first official Clash of the Cats of the season. After the Lady Cougars took the lead on a free throw by Katelyn Jones set up on an assist from Kapreshia Powell with 36 seconds remaining, Khalia Hampton and Amber Sydnor each hit a pair of free throws to give the Lady Panthers a 54-51 win. Hampton scored 21 while Sydnor had 17 and Nathanshia Haskins 14 for Coach Dedra Adler's winners. Meagann Hardison scored 19 and Abby Hinton 12 for Logan.
In the boys game, the Panthers outscored the Cougars 21-12 in overtime for a 94-85 win. The score was tied at 73-73 at the end of regulation and was still tied at 81-81 before Christian Naylor put the Panthers ahead for keeps on a 3-point swisher. The Panthers outscored their guests 14-4 the last two minutes of the game. Hampton scored 23 while Barrett Croslin & Jordan Kennedy each had 17 for Coach Phil Todd's Panthers. Bill Gaines to be honored at Auburn Baptist

This Sunday, a local sports legend is going to be honored in a special birthday party. Bill Gaines, who along with his wife Nancy, has been one of the most loyal fans of Auburn High School and its successor, Logan County High School, will be honored during the 11 a.m. service of Auburn Baptist Church. Planners hope many former athletes, coaches and cheerleaders whom he has supported attend.
