Matthews' Lady Cats, Stinson's Lady Scotties fall by 3 points each at regional tourney
|
The teams coached by two men who have ties with Logan County High School both lost their 4th Region Tournament girls games Wednesday at Barren County High School. The Franklin-Simpson Lady Cats fell 59-56 Russell County. F-S is coached by LCHS graduate Josh Matthews. Defending regional champion Glasgow lost to regional favorite Bowling Green 49-46. The Lady Scotties are coached by Justin Stinson, who was an assistant coach at LCHS. Both teams trailed by 13 at halftime, came back but then came up short.

Clark, Perry half of new F-S Hall of Fame
|
Ronnie Clark & Kenny Perry are two of the inaugural Franklin-Simpson High School Hall of Fame members. Clark, who served as basketball coach and then principal at Auburn High School from 1957-62, was principal of FSHS 1960-62, has been a bank president in Franklin and a member of the WKU Board of Regents. He now is mayor of Franklin. Perry, who set records while winning the Russellville Country Club Invitational, is 10th in all-time career earnings on the PGA Tour and has won many of golf's greatest honors. The other two charter members are Dr. Davd Wayne Patterson, who is chief resident of George Washington University Internal Medicine, and Dr. David Leon Mooneyhan, who has put together a distinguished career in educational administration. An induction ceremony was held Thursday.

Panthers hold on for regional win 66-60
|
After leading by 17 points four times, including in the fourth quarter, the Russellville Panthers withstood an onslaught by Allen County-Scottsville 66-60 Monday in the opening game of the 4th Region Tournament at Diddle Arena Monday. Jordan Kennedy scored 8 of his game-high 21 points in the final period and RHS went 8 of 10 at the line in the stanza to avoid the upset, Christian Naylor & Darrion Quarles each hit 3 straight free throws late, totaling 10 and 11 points, respectively. Naylor had 5 assists and Barrett Croslin 3..Jordan Witcher scored 14 of his 17 points in the 4th quarter for the Patriots, and Jared Walden added 8 of his 15 in the frame. Coach Phil Todd’s team will now play in Friday’s semifinals at 6 p.m. against Coach Willie Feldhaus' Russell County Lakers, who beat Greenwood 79-63 in the second game Monday.

Panthers to play AC-S at region Monday
|
The pairings were determined Saturday evening for the Region 4 boys basketball tournament at Diddle Arena. 13th District champion Russellville (17-12) will open Monday at 6 p.m. against Allen County-Scottsville (15-16) Monday’s second game will pit District 16 champion Russell County (24-5) against District 14 runner-up Greenwood (16-15). Tuesday has District 14 champion Warren Central (24-6) battling District 13 runner-up Franklin-Simpson (15-14) followed by District 15 champion Barren County (24-5) playing District 16 runner-up Clinton County (18-11). Semi-final action will be Friday, March 1st, at 6 and 7:30. The finals will be Sunday, March 3 at 3 p.m. Advanced tickets will cost $5 while tickets at the gate will be $6. Tickets will go on sale at RHS Monday.

RHS baseball selling fund-raising cards
|
New Russellville High School baseball coach Greg Shelton wants to take the Panthers to Florida for the first time ever during spring break, according to one of the players' parents, Artis Stratton. New uniforms are also a goal. To raise money, the team (and parents) are selling cards for $20, which have coupons worth $250 in discounts.

BG Tech names Dean's List from Logan
|
Bowling Green Technical College has announced its Dean List students for the Fall Semester 2012. Those with Logan County addresses are Lora Ann Clark, Christin Lea Ford, Kyra Nicole Forgy, Amanda Dawn Harrington, Casey Holloway, Holden Hudnall, Tammy Ann Inscoe, Julie Kahl, Robert Joseph Keith, David Wayne Kie, Raymond Alan Klein, Nina Marie Lindsey, Amy Munday, Mary Elizabeth Pedigo, Shelia Ann Rager, Nicholas Scarbrough, Heather Camille Taylor, Amber Thorlton, Israel Vargas, Tyler Alan Whittington and Valerie Tenille Williams. The school's name is being changed to South Central Kentucky Community and Technical College.

Panthers win 2nd straight district title
|
Just as they had done in their tournament opener against Logan County, the Russellville Panthers came out strong Thursday to jump on host Franklin-Simpson 36-18 on the way to a 72-57 win for their second straight 13th District championship. Four Panthers-- Jordan Kennedy, Christian Naylor, Darrion Quarles & Barrett Croslin-- finished in double figures. Then when veterans Drew Talley & Tanner Clark led a late charge, Josh Hampton fired three straight assists to keep Coach Phil Todd's team comfortably ahead. Kennedy finished with 23 points and Naylor 15 while Talley had 16 and Clark 15 for Coach Dee Spencer's Wildcats. The teams will play in the 4th Region Tournament at Diddle Arena either Monday or Tuesday. Coach William Unseld's Warren Central Dragons will be one of the teams in the tournament, following a close semifinal win over coach D.G. Sherill's Bowling Green Purples in Thursday's district semifinals.

RHS & F-S to play their 12th district finals
|
For the 12th time since Franklin-Simpson moved into the 13th District in 1995, the Wildcats and the Russellville Panthers will meet in the boys championship game Thursday night. Coach Dee Spencer’s F-S team beat Todd Central 64-58 Tuesday with balanced scoring from Demaris Payne, Drew Talley, Tavin Lovan & Tanner Clark, with each scoring 13 to 15 points. Luke Huff scored 21 for Todd Central. Russellville is the defending champion, the 7th time they have won the title in these 18 seasons. Coach Phil Todd, who is back after eight seasons away from the bench, will be going for his fifth championship in 11 seasons as head coach since F-S came aboard. Dennis Pardue was at the helm for three of the titles, including last year. The Wildcats have won eight championships in 18 years of 13th District play. The Panthers have won both meetings between the two schools this year. Tipoff at Franklin-Simpson is at 7 p.m.
In other tournament action, homestanding Greenwood eliminated the top-seeded Warren East Wednesday. Coach Jason Stonebreaker’s Gators beat the Raiders 52-45 after eliminating South Warren earlier in the week. Greenwood had not won a single district game going into the tournament. Warren Central and Bowling Green play an elimination game Thursday. Coach Justin Stinson’s defending regional champion Glasgow Lady Scotties beat Monroe County, which had won over them two of three times during the season. Coach Pardue’s Garrard County Golden Lions lost 66-52 to Boyle County in the 45th District to finish the season 7-22. Former Panther Trevor Clark was his assistant.

Todd Central withstands Hampton-led RHS
|
Playing tough defense and getting a super game from junior post player Kahlia Hampton, the Russellville Lady Panthers put themselves in position to upset two-time defending champion Todd Central Tuesday is an opening-round game of the 13th District Tournament at Franklin. But Todd shut down RHS star Amber Sydnor (4 points) and got a good second half from Ariel Johnson to beat the Lady Panthers 34-25. Hampton scored 7 of Russellville’s first 9 points as Coach Dedra Adler’s team led 9-4. Then Nathashia Haskins scored the final five points of the first half to put Russellville up 15-14 at intermission. The Lady Rebels held Russellville scoreless the next 10 minutes to lead 22-15 after three quarters. Hampton scored the first six points of the third quarter to cut the lead to one, but Demetria Rose hit a shot for Todd and Julia Fox added 6 of her 8 points to clinch the win. Hampton finished with 16 points and Haskins with 5. Johnson led Todd with 9. The Lady Rebels meet Franklin-Simpson in Friday’s finals.

Croslin, Kennedy lead RHS past Cougars
|
Barrett Croslin & Jordan Kennedy each scored 22 points to lead the Russellville Panthers to a 76-63 win over Logan County in the first round of the 13th District Tournament at Franklin-Simpson Monday. With Croslin scoring 13 points in the first quarter, Coach Phil Todd's team took a 27-8 lead into the second quarter. Coach Lonnie Mason's Cougars came back repeatedly, cutting the lead to eight twice. RHS hit 25 of 35 free throws and Logan 9 of 22. Torin Graham scored 23 in his last game for the Cougars and Landon Stratton 12. The Panthers play the winner of Tuesday's Franklin-Todd Central game in the finals on Thursday.

Host Franklin ends Lady Cougars' season
|
Franklin-Simpson dominated the Logan County Lady Cougars 69-34 in the opening game of the 13th District Tournament at Franklin Monday. Led by veteran Sydney Gooch and seventh grader Keely Morrow, Coach Josh Matthews' Lady Cats made it difficult for Logan to get the ball downcourt. Katelynn Jones returned from illness to lead the Lady Cougars with 10 points and fellow post players Megan Lindsey & Abbey Hinton added 8 and 7, respectively. F-S will play the winner of Tuesday's Russellville vs. Todd Central game in Friday's finals.

WKU's Evans slam dunk runner-up
|
Former Western Kentucky University basketball player Jeremy Evans was runner-up in the NBA Slam Dunk competition Saturday night, a year after he won the 2012 championship. Terrence Ross of the Toronto Raptors took first place. Evans, who plays for the Utah Jazz, was one of three finalists in the West division, all of whom played their collegiate ball in Kentucky. He eliminated Eric Bledsoe of UK and Kenneth Faried of Morehead Sate. Kyrie Irving won the Three Point Shootout. Commentators were Shaquille O'Neal, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Rick Fox. Concerned Citizens to distribute new shoes
|
Concerned Citizens of Logan County will have hundreds of pairs of new women's shoes to give to those who meet income guidelines on Saturday, March 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Most of the shoes are size 6, although a few pairs are sizes 9 and 10, according to Executive Director Doris Vick. The shoes are courtesy of the Feed The Children organization. Those wishing to receive the shoes should bring identification and proof of income. Concerned Citizens is located in the KP Hall on East 5th Street in Russellville.

Central's playing floor now Tim Riley Court
|
The playing floor of Warren Central's gymnasium is now officially Tim Riley Court. The honor was made official Thursday while the Dragons were beating Daviess County 77-42. Riley coached Central for 14 seasons, winning 307 games, eight 4th Region championships, and a state championship in 2004. His Dragons were state runner-up the following season and a Final Four team in 2007. He retired in 2011 to become a member of the WKU Lady Toppers coaching staff. Riley is the son of Auburn native Jean Drake Riley and her husband, former Chandlers and Logan County High School teacher Douglas Riley The decision to honor him was led by Athletic Director Todd Steward, who is a graduate of Olmstead High School.

Lady Panthers' game to start early
|
Tonight's Russellville girls game against visting Christian County is starting 30 minutes ahead of schedule. Athletic Director Nathan Thompson says the junior varsity game will tip off at 5:30 with the varsity to follow. It will be the final home game for six-year starting point guard Amber Sydnor. The Stevenson Elementary Jump Rope Team will perform. It's now coached by Keela Osborne following the retirement of founder Lou Kendall.

Janet Hurt leaving Logan for new position
|
Dr. Janet Hurt was thanked by the board of education Tuesday for her service to Logan County Schools. She has been chosen as the executive director for the Race to the Top – District (RTT-D) grant with the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative (GRREC) and the Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative (OVEC). After leading Adairville School to previously unprecedented accomplishments as its principal, she has been serving for several years as assistant superintendent. She will help lead 22 school districts in utilizing one of 16 national grants in the academic improvement initiative. Logan is one of those districts.

RHS improves front door security
|
Russellville High School’s installation of a new entrance system for the main high school doors was completed Thursday. From now on, in order to gain entrance to the high school, visitors will activate the buzzer on the panel located to the far right side of the porch area. They will be asked by someone in the front office to identify themselves and state their purpose for visiting RHS. “I would like to thank our local board of education for recognizing the need to improve our school with the implementation of this equipment,” says Principal Kim McDaniel.

City, county schools to be in session Monday
|
Both Superintendent Leon Smith of the Russellville Independent Schools and Superintendent Marshall Kemp of the Logan County Schools have announced that instead of their schools being dismissed Monday for the Presidents Day holiday they will all be in session Monday, Feb. 18 to make up for a day missed in January for inclement weather. Kemp says this will allow schools to be dismissed before Memorial Day if weather cooperates.

Adairville SBDM to start principal search
|
The Adairville School Site-Based Decision Making Council will hold a special called meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 19 to begin the process of the selection of principal for the 2013-14 school year, according to Superintendent Marshall Kemp. The agenda will include a review of law related to principal selection, establishment of criteria for the principal based upon the needs of the school, discussion of recruiting strategies, and selection if a trainer for the council on principal selection. Retired administrator Mike Hurt is serving as interim principal following the unexpected death of Principal Paul Sansom during the school year.

South Warren, BGH sweep LCHS, RHS
|
The 14th District ruled over the 13th District Tuesday. Bowling Green beat Russellville twice. Coach Lavonda Johnson's Lady Purples were dominant over RHS 84-33. Russellville's boys were within 6 points of the Purples in the 4th quarter but faded. Jordan Kennedy scored 18 for the Panthers, but 16 of them came in the first half. Christian Naylor scored two straight baskets on assists from Kennedy, and Barrett Croslin crafted a 3-point play and drew a charge on Blue Tisdale late, but Coach D.G. Sherill's Purples were too deep in the 79-66 win. Clay Stivers scored 19 points and Justin Wright 16. Naylor held Nacarius Fant to 4 points. The Logan County boys lost to visiting South Warren at the foul line. The Cougars hit just 14 of 31 foul shots while the Spartans were 19 of 27. For Logan Torin Graham had 12 points but got only 2 of 7 free throws to fall. Taylor Blakemore scored 8 of his 10 points late. Landon Stratton reinjured his knee in the third quarter. South forces OT, edges Lady Cougars
|
In a game that was close throughout, the South Warren girls edged Logan County 53-50 in overtime Tuesday at LCHS. Led by Madison Alvis & Megan Lindsey late in the game, the Lady Cougars built their biggest lead of the game at 45-40, but Amaya Lasley hit a couple of shots to force an overtime. The game was last tied at 49-49 when Abbey Hinton scored on an assist by Maegann Hardison, who is recovering from illness. Brittney Taylor hit what proved to be the clinching shot. Hinton led Logan with 17 points. Alvis got extended playing time and responded well in the absence of the injured Kapreshia Powell and the ailing Katelynn Jones. Eighth grader Logan Williamson, who a week earlier was leading Olmstead to its third straight middle school championship, played much of the game at point guard in the absence of the injured Laura Hunt & Taleia Mason. Lasley had 18 for South while Taylor & Timitryl Patterson each scored 11.

Speed limit to revert to 55 near Auburn
|
The speed limit on U.S. 68-80, which was raised to 65 a few months ago, is being lowered again. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will lower the maximum speed limit to 55 on the stretch near Auburn from a point 500 feet west of the first Auburn exit on the Russellville side to a point 660 feet east of KY 103 (Chandlers Road). The reduced speed area will encompass the traffic light at 103, the railroad crossing, and the connection with old US 68 on the Russellville side of Auburn. Signs will be installed Wednesday.

Panthers, Lady Rebels get district wins
|
After having lost three straight games, the Russellville Panthers won a district game at Todd Central 63-54 Friday. Jordan Kennedy scored 20, Darrion Quarles 15 and Zach Hines 10 for Coach Phil Todd's team. Jon-Michael Brown led Todd with 17 points. With the loss, the Rebels finish in a tie with Logan County for third place. A tiebreaker will be used Wednesday to see who plays top-seeded RHS and who host Franklin-Simpson in the district tournament. The Lady Panthers led Todd Central 32-31 late in the third quarter, and then Coach Steve Phillips' Lady Rebels scored the final 19 points of the game for a 50-32 win. Amber Sydnor led the Lady Panthers with 15 points, 11 of them in the first half. Ariel Johnson & Savannah Foister each scored 15 for Todd while Claire Hart added 9. The same two teams will play again in the district.

Graham, Kennedy, Wright among area leaders
|
Torin Graham & Ben Wright of Logan County and Jordan Kennedy of Russellville are among area boys statistical leaders in a survey conducted by the Bowling Green Daily News. Graham is the leading scorer (17.5),5th in both steals (31) and assists (75), and 8th in rebounding (5.0). Kennedy is 2nd in scoring (17.2) and rebounding (7.4). Wright, a sophomore, is 3rd in rebounding (6.1) and 5th in both scoring (13.5) and free throw shooting (75.7%). Also Chrisitan Naylor of RHS is 3rd in free throw shooting (77%), 4th in steals (33), 7th in assists (64) and 10th in scoring (10.8). Also listed are Panthers Josh Hampton (5th in rebounding at 5.7 and 7th in free throw shooting at 74%), Barrett Croslin (3rd in assists with 79) and Darrion Quarles (4th in rebounding at 5.8) along with Logan County's Taylor Blakemore (8th in rebounding at 5.0) and Landon Stratton (9th in free throw shooting at 73%). Neither Coach Dedra Adler of LCHS or Coach Scot MacAllister of LCHS submits girls' stats. Russellville's Amber Sydnor would be in the running for top scorer and Logan's Meagann Hardison would not be far behind.

Work underway on KY 100, resurfacing scheduled later this year
|
Motorists traveling on KY 100 between Russellville and Franklin are experiencing delays as KYTC crews clear vegetation from the right of way, extend culverts, and build shoulders over the next several months. This work is being done between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. and, when necessary, a flagman helps direct traffic. Resurfacing of the route will take place in late summer/early fall once all of the improvements have been made. The project was awarded to The BRC Group in November 2012 for $913,000 and is scheduled for completion this summer.

Former RHS football star Gary Silvey dies
|
Gary Silvey, who was co-captain of the first Russellville football team to reach the state finals, died Tuesday in Virginia. He had successfully battled cancer and his death came as a surprise. He and the late Benny Cox captained the 1964 Panthers to their first WKC championship since 1950. He was the center on a Northwestern Louisiana University team which went undefeated. He became a coach and then athletic director of all schools in Newport News, Va. He and his wife, the former Bobby Sue Clark, retired to Williamsburg, Va. Their son, Brian Silvey, and his wife Heather live in Russellville.

Olmstead breezes to twin county wins
|
Both Olmstead teams won with ease in the finals of the Logan County Middle School Basketball Tournament Tuesday. The Lady Rams, coached by Daniel Alvis and Chris Wilcutt, won their third straight girls championship with a 40-20 win over Adairville, the same team they beat in last year’s finals. Then Coach Todd Gill’s Rams jumped out to a 23-0 lead and beat the Auburn Tigers 63-25 after leading 41-9 at the half. Logan Williamson, who has been the point guard on all three championship teams, scored 11 and Lee Ann Coots 10 for the Lady Rams. Lorenzo Garcia had 15 points and Dalton Nash 14 to lead 11 Rams who scored. Details of all tournament games will appear on The LoJo later.

Concerned Citizens featured in Daily News story, boosted by McDonald's
|
The tutorial program conducted by the Concerned Citizens of Logan County is featured in an article on Page A-3 of the Bowling Green Daily News' Tuesday. Feb. 5 edition. The story by Alyssa Harvey details the good works the organization headed by Doris Vick does and talks about its need for more donations. One business which helps the cause is McDonald's of Russellville, The monthly fund raiser in which McDonald’s gives a percentage of its sales to Concerned Citizens is now underway, from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Both Olmstead teams, Adairville girls, Auburn boys reach county finals at LCHS Tuesday
|
The Adairville Lady Cardinals and Auburn Tigers won lopsided games Saturday afternoon in the Logan County Middle School Tournament. Coach Todd Webb's Lady Cards won 31-23 after leading 19-10 at the half. Coach Josh Hall's Tigers were impressive in a 48-21 win. They move on to Tuesday's championship games. Then Saturday night, both Olmstead teams won over Lewisburg, meaning the Rams and Lady Rams will also be in Tuesday's finals.

Lewisburg advances to today's semifinals
|
Lewisburg's teams won games against Chandlers Thursday to start the Logan County Middle School Tournament. The Lady Rangers won 18-15 and the Rangers 22-19. They will play Saturday night at Logan County High School against Olmstead's teams, which are both top seeded. This afternoon, the Adairville and Auburn teams are scheduled to meet in both games. The finals will be Tuesday night at LCHS.

Lady Panthers, Cougars get Clash wins
|
The Russellville Lady Panthers and the Logan County Cougars were winners in the second Clash of the Cats doubleheader at LCHS Friday. Behind 27 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals by Amber Sydnor and a clinching free throw by Davonna Sydnor, Coach Dedra Adler’s RHS girls won 40-39, even though Logan's Meaghann Hardison bombed in a shot from near halfcourt as time expired. With the win the Lady Panthers made sure they don't have to play top seed Franklin-Simpson at Franklin in the first round of the district tournament. Torin Graham hit 13 of 16 free throws, including 8 of 10 in the second half, on the way to 23 points as Coach Lonnie Mason's Cougars won 75-71. Clint Knight & Landon Stratton each scored 13 and Ben Wright 10. Christian Naylor, Barrett Croslin, Jordan Kennedy & Lee McMurray all fouled out for the Panthers, who clinched the top seed in the district despite the loss as Franklin-Simpson fell at Todd Central.
