Hornets to honor Concerned Citizens tonight
|
|
When the Bowling Green Hornets entertain the River City Panthers at 7 p.m. tonight in a professional basketball game at Russellville's Jim Young Gymnasium, youngsters in the Concerned Citizens Tutorial Program will be special guests. General Manager Waseem Moorad invited Director Doris Vick and the students in the program to be on hand to see the game and be recognized. The Hornets expect Jamal Crook, Teng Akol & Vic Moses, who missed last week's game, to be back in action.

Cougars are 4th Region baseball kings
|
|
The Logan County Cougars are 4th Region baseball champions. Behind the pitching of Hunter Britt and Ryan Basham, LCHS beat Russell County Wednesday 3-2 at WKU. Matt Harper drove Gage Hales with his third hit. It's the Cougars' first regional title since Coach Ethan Meguiar was the second baseman in 1989.

Cougars beat Glasgow 2-0, reach finals
|
|
The Logan County Cougars will play for the 4th Region baseball championship at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at WKU. Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team, which has been near the top of regional standings all season, punched their tickets for the finals Tuesday by beating Coach Sam Royse’s Glasgow Scotties 2-0. Sophomore Caleb Bruner pitched his second straight postseason shutout, allowing GHS no runs on two hits, one walk and eight strikeouts. The Cougars scored both of their runs in the sixth inning. Ryan Basham singled, Thomas Miller reached on an error, Joe Holliday bunted them over, and Gage Hales slashed an RBI single for his fourth hit in two days. Bruner had two hits himself. Dustin Cartas, Matt Harper & Ian Woodall also had hits. The Cougars will play the winner of Greenwood and Russell County in the finals.

Gettings pitches Cougars to region win
|
|
With Blake Gettings pitching a complete game, the Logan County Cougars won their 4th Region opener Monday morning, beating Metcalfe County 4-2. Gage Hales had three hits, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. Dustin Cartas doubled and Cody Hunt singled for the five hits Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team produced. Gettings gave up the two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out five. The Cougars will play in the semifinals Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Writers' Night staged in Russellville Saturday
|
|
T.C. Thomason will host this season's second (open mic) Poets Prose Writers Night, called “Heart Mind & Soul,” this Saturday, June 1, at 7 p.m.at the same location as the Mary Ann Fisher Summer Concert Series music events, 6th & Morgan streets in Russellville. There will be a food vendor on site. Attendees should bring their own lawn chairs. Michael Gough says, “Know any writers of poetry or prose? Short stories? Let ‘em know. Everyone is invited. All ages. No cover charge. This will be an on-going 'open mic night' through summer.” These are sponsored in part by Russellville Blues and Historic Russellville.

Memorial Day Service to honor Bro. Joe
|
|
A Memorial Day Celebration will be held on Carrico Park Square in downtown Russellville at 10 a.m. Monday with the theme “Remembering Bro. Joe Carrico.” Speakers will include Rev. Mike Humble, Lt. Col. Scott Halter of Fort Campbell, and Mack Mallory of WRUS. A Color Guard from Fort Campbell will lead the flag observance and a male ensemble from the deGraffenried Chorale will perform, according to Main Street Russellville Director Darlene Gooch.

Law enforcement officers to play basketball

Officers from the Logan County Sheriff's Department and Russellville Police Department will play against coaches of the Givin' Back program Saturday at 6 p.m. at Russellville's Jim Young Gymnasium. The event is a fund raiser for the Givin' Back program, which provides training in sports and life for Russellville's youngsters.

Orndorff, Neblett, Adams & Jenkins lead RHS
|
|
Rebecca Orndorff and Kesi Neblett were both honored as valedictorians of the Russellville High School Class of 2013 during last Saturday's commencement. Troy Adams was salutatorian and Chelsea Jenkins was third overall. Orndorff was also the winner of the prestigious deGraffenried Award as chosen by the RHS Faculty.

Cougars continue dominance of 13th District
|
|
For the seventh time in the 14 baseball seasons of this century, the Logan County Cougars are champions of District 13. Coach Ethan Meguiar, who has guided his Cougars to region in 13 of those 14 years, saw Hunter Britt pitch eight innings of 2-hit, 2-walk shutout baseball as Logan won 7-0 for the second straight night. Caleb Bruner & Ryan Basham each had two hits and Ian Woodall drove in three runs against top-seeded host Franklin-Simpson Tuesday. This was the 12th time in those 14 years LCHS and F-S have met in the finals. Franklin has won five times.

Lawson leads Music for Moore effort
|
|
Carla Lawson, who owns and operates the Russellville Domino’s Pizza franchise along with her husband Rob, has created “Music for Moore,” which is designed to help the people of Moore, Okla. deal with Monday’s massive tornado. “Music has always helped lift my spirits,” she says. “I am taking donations of musical equipment—guitars, keyboards, any kind of musical equipment! Even some of the simple things like guitar strings! People have lost their musical items, and insurance will not cover these items that bring joy into their homes. Some people will have to use the insurance money to cover other things, so I believe that musical equipment will be kind of put off for now. Help lift Moore!” She has set July 5 as the goal date to have a full load of musical equipment to go to Oklahoma. Anyone who has music equipment (only) to donate is asked to contact Lawson, either at Domino’s or on the Music for Moore Facebook page.

Cougars, Todd girls, F-S teams win in district
|
|
Only one team from the Land of Logan survived the opening day of the 13th District Tournaments Monday. The Logan County Cougars beat the Russellville Panthers 7-0 at Franklin behind the pitching of Caleb Bruner and one big inning. Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team will meet the Franklin-Simpson Wildcats in the baseball finals Tuesday. Both softball teams lost on the 10-run rule. The host RHS Lady Panthers fell to Todd Central 12-0 while the Logan County Lady Cougars were eliminated 12-2 by Todd Central. Detailed stories will appear later.

David Bilyeus trucking supplies to Oklahoma
|
|
David and Joyce Bilyeu of Logan County were headed to Oklahoma Monday afternoon when a second tornado struck the state which has undergone unbelievable devastation this week. David retired as a trucker for UPS in January and then signed on as a volunteer driver for Nashville-based Church of Christ Disaster Relief. He is a member of Crittenden Drive Church of Christ in Russellville, whose members help out often with the relief group. Joyce is a retired teacher at the Russellville Area Technology Center. They left with a load of supplies for Shawnee, Okla., which was hit by a tornado Sunday. Monday an even worse tornado hit Moore, just outside Oklahoma City. By 9:30 Monday night the number of confirmed deaths in that city was 51, including 20 children, according to CNN, and the search was on for countless more missing people.

Logan tennis duo wins state opener
|
|
The doubles team from Logan County won its first match in the state tennis tournament in Lexington Thursday before being eliminated in the second round. Cougar juniors Logan Johnson and Adam Wilkins defeated the Oneida Baptist team of sophomore Donald Chick and senior Joshua Souane. In the next found they lost to ninth-seeded Ryan Cunningham and Scott Drees, seniors from Covington Catholic. Coach Dan Duncan’s team’s scores were not available.

Whitfield to be part of Strawberry Festival

The office of Congressman Ed Whitfield has announced that he will come from a wreath-laying ceremony in Paducah to appear in the 2 p.m. Strawberry Festival Parade in Adairville. Former South Logan magistrate Harold Prince and his wife Cecil will be parade marshals. A full schedule of activities is underway in Adairville Friday and Saturday.

Finley Woodard to coach Lady Cougars
|
|
Finley Baird Woodard, a star on the first-ever Logan County girls basketball team who later played for Lindsey Wilson College and the WKU Lady Toppers, is the new head coach of the Lady Cougars. Her appointment was announced at a public conference Tuesday by Principal Casey Jaynes and Athletic Director Hugh McReynolds. She has also served as associate director of admissions at WKU for several years. Woodard played in the regional high school finals for Coach Jim Thompson and in the NCAA Final Four for Coach Paul Sanderford. She follows Scot MacAllister, who resigned after eight years as the Lady Cougar coach.

Squeaky to play for Hornets at RHS
|

Former Russellville High School star Maurice “Squeaky” Hampton will be making his season debut for the Bowling Green Hornets this Sunday, May 19, against the Middle Tennessee Storm in Nashville, General Manager Waseem Moorad has announced. Hampton’s homecoming and home debut in Russellville will be at the next Hornets’ home game on May 31. It will be his first game at Jim Young Gymnasium since his senior year of 2002. Since then he has played four years as an All-OVC player at APSU and seven years overseas in five countries.

The Logan County High School doubles team of Logan Johnson and Adam Wilkins will play against another region semifinalist duo, Donald Chick and Joshua Souane from Oneida Baptist, on Thursday, May 16 at 11:30 a.m. at Shillito Park in Lexington in the state tournament, Coach Dan Duncan has announced.

New Lady Cougar b'ball coach to be named Tuesday following MacAllister's resignation
|
|
A public announcement will be made Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Commons Area of Logan County High School, naming the school's new head girls basketball coach. Scot MacAllister, who has coached the team for eight seasons, resigned earlier this spring. Highlights of "Coach Mac's" tenure were two straight winning seasons from 2008-10, including 18-12 the second year when the team reached the regional semifinals, and this season, when the Lady Cougars won the FSNB Christmas Classic. There were no seniors on the 2012-13 team. The eight-year record overall was 90-125, including 35-89 in the region and 16-42 in the district. Mac's teams were 10-9 against Russellville.

Wilkins-Johnson team headed to state tennis

|
The doubles team of juniors Logan Johnson & Adam Wilkins will represent Logan County High School in the state tennis tournament. Coach Dan Duncan's team won three regional matches in straight sets, including a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Russellville's Cameron Tisdale & Will Oakley, before losing in split sets to Bowling Green's Noah Flemer & Brandon Lee in the semifinals. The other wins were over Allen County-Scottsville and Glasgow. State will be in Louisville.

Track seniors to be honored during softball tonight
|
|
Two days after the Logan County boys track team finished as regional runner-up and two Lady Cougars qualified for state as well, Coach Greg Howard's 18 seniors will be honored between softball games as the Lady Cougars try to sweep a strong Hart County team. The ceremony is expected to take place about 6:15. Finishing behind only defending state champion Paducah Tilghman, the Cougars have several going to state, including Colton Spencer, who won the 400 and joined Sye Head, Michael Sydnor and Aaron Foster in winning a relay; Justin Rone, who qualified in four events, and Dylan Cole, who qualified in three. The Lady Cougars who qualified are Hayley Mayher and Jasmine Martin. Complete results will follow.

Tony Key subject of Daily News sports feature

Former Russellville Panthers center and current Bowling Green Hornets post player Tony Key is the subject of an extensive sports feature in the Bowling Green Daily News' Sunday edition. Zach Greenwell's story, which runs most of two full newspaper pages, is entitled "Unfulfilled dream, Former Russellville star has taken long journey since early NBA hopes vanished." It tells of his backboard-breaking days as RHS went to the state Final Four his junior year, of his giving up his Division I eligibility to go undrafted by the NBA in 2001, his time at Los Angeles City College, his international pro experience and his frustrations. His brother and current coach, Otis Key, is quoted frequently, as is his coach in California, Mike Miller. It also tells of how the deaths of his sisters, Hanna and Jessica, were devastating to him. The newspaper is available at many stores in Russellville, and the Sunday edition is usually out for reading at Logan County Public Library throughout each week.

Aeron Smith leads top-ranked Lady Gators
|
|
If there were such an award in high school softball, Aeron Smith would just about have the Triple Crown wrapped up. Smith, who was All-13th District while playing for Logan County as a seventh grader, has been playing for Greenwood every since. Coach Penny Reece’s Lady Gators, who are one game short of North Laurel’s state win-streak record at 29-0, have been ranked first in the state all season, are ranked 20th in the nation, and have outscored their opponents 288-12. Smith leads the 4th Region in batting average (.578), hits (59) and RBIs (54). She also had 8 home runs including a grand slam. In the 27th game of the season, Smith broke the GHS RBI record of 51, which Lindsey Green set in 45 games in 1997. A junior who plays summer ball for the prestigious Louisville Lady Sluggers, Smith has committed to play for UT-Martin. She is the daughter of former Auburn residents Tim and Darcy Smith and the granddaughter of Shelby and Beverly Piper & Geraldine and Billy Hodges, all of Logan County, and Charles and Linda Smith of Manchester, Tenn.

Kesi Neblett to be a speaker at Gatton graduation

One of the speakers in the graduating class of the Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky will be Kesi Neblett of Russellville. That commencement exercise will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Van Meter Auditorium on the campus of Western Kentucky University. She has been a student at the nation’s top-ranked high school for two years. Her parents, Marvinia and Charles Neblett, want all friends of the family to know they are invited to the ceremony.

Ten LCHS students chosen for top programs

Seven juniors at Logan County High School have been selected for the 2012 Governor’s Scholars Program, Principal Casey Jaynes has announced. They are Trevor Brown, Will Hughes, Kaitlyn Jenigan, Logan Johnson, Cody McLellan, Courtney McReynolds and Adam Wilkins. Additionally, Will Cunningham has been chosen to attend the Governor’s School for the Arts, D.J. Lee has been selected to participate in Professional Education Preparation Program (PEPP) at Pikeville College, and Grace Harris been accepted to Murray’s Commonwealth Honors Academy for the summer program.

First of two graduations for Neblett Saturday
|

For most teens, graduating from high school is a once in a lifetime experience. For Kesi Neblett of Russellville, it will involve twice-in-a-month experiences. Charvinia Deton Kesi Amira Neblett is a member of the graduating class of the Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky, which has once again been ranked the nation's top high school. That commencement exercise will be held this Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m. in Van Meter Auditorium on the campus of Western Kentucky University. She has been a student there for two years. She also is considered a member of the graduating class of Russellville High School. The RHS commencement exercises will be held Saturday, May 18 at 10 a.m. at Jim Young Gymnasium. Kesi, the daughter of Charles and Marvinia Neblett of Russellville, will attend New York's Columbia University this fall.

Debbie Brown, Katina Kemplin new principals
|

A Todd County educator has been named principal of Russellville's Stevenson Elementary School. The selection of Debbie Brown, who is currently instructional supervisor for Todd County schools, was announced Friday. She is a native of Clifty and is a former teacher at North Todd Elementary School. She will succeed Tammy Corum, who is retiring at the end of this school year.
WRUS News has reported that Katina Kemplin has been named the new principal at Adairville Elementary School. She is currently assistant principal at Auburn Elementary and is the wife of Olmstead Elementary principal Ben Kemplin. The position came open upon the death of Adairville principal Paul Sansom. Mike Hurt has been serving as interim principal.

Hawks edge Hornets 105-103 in OT

Nicholas Reed hit a spinning shot with 1.5 seconds remaining in overtime to give the visiting St. Louis Hawks a 105-103 win over the Bowling Green Hornets at Russellville High Schools Friday. Justin Taylor had hit two free throws with 1:04 remaining to give the Hornets a lead, but they didn't score in the final minute. Coach Otis Key's team almost won in regulation, but Brandon Stockton's baseline drive went in and came out with a second remaining.

McLean County beats Lady Cougars 5-1
|
|
Jessica Jones led McLean County on both offense and defense in a 5-1 win over visiting Logan County Friday. The senior homered, doubled, singled and drove in a pair of runs on offense. She also pitched a two-hitter. Those hits were by Logan seniors Megan Griggs & Rebecca Dezarn. Classmate Shelby Browning was hit by a pitch and Dezarn reached on an error by Jones. Shelby Milam pitched a five-hitter.

Citizens of Character celebration Saturday

The second annual Citizens of Character celebration will be held at Crossroads Church Saturday, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Approximately 50 students in Logan County have been invited to attend. All CharacterWorks supporters are welcome to attend, says local director Lisa White.

Concerned Citizens to distribute shoes

Once again, Concerned Citizens of Logan County will distribute women's shoes this Saturday at the KP Hall on East Fifth Street in Russellville. The shoes, which are in sizes 6 and 10, have been provided by Feed the Children. To qualify for shoes, a woman must show proof of identity and proof of income. It will be done from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, contact Doris Vick.

McKenzie places 2nd for number 2 Brescia
|
|
Logan County High School graduate Will McKenzie played a big role in Brescia University's placing second in the KIAC Championships in Lexington this week. McKenzie shot 82-73-76-231 to place second among Bearcats golfers. Chase Carrico shot 226 and Matt Galloway 240 among seven BU linksters. Meanwhile Brescia finished second in the conference tournament as a team, trailing only Point Park. Asbury was third and IU East fourth. This apparently will be the final outing for McKenzie as a Bearcat. The sophomore, who has been the public address announcer at Brescia basketball games, plans to transfer to WKU this fall to pursue a career in broadcasting, according to his dad, former WRUS sportscaster Terry McKenzie.

Funeral services set Sunday for Judge Bailey
|
|
James Ernest Bailey, who made Logan County history by being elected judge-executive as a Republican in 1977, died this week. He was elected to a second term and later switched his registration to Democrat. A 1965 graduate of Olmstead High School, Mr. Bailey made his home in North Logan. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, May 5 at Post Oak Baptist Church in Russellville at 2 p.m.
