Program to honor Adairville Chief McComas

A fund raiser for former Adairville fire chief and EMT Larry McComas will be held Friday, Aug. 16, at Calvary Baptist Church, just south of Adairville. “Come for a night of praise as we raise funds for Larry, who has serious health issues,” says Calvary pastor Brent Johnson¸ who is also a councilman.”We are calling on the community to come out and help this citizen who has done so much to help others in this community.” Some of those lending their talents ar expected to be Barry Yates, Willis Allen, Paulette Cowen, Beth Mayes, Cynthia Hardesty, Frankie Hallums, The Calvary Praise Team, Humble Harmony, and others. Mayor Donna Blake and the city held a reception July 9 in honor of McComas. The program will begin at 6 pm.

Kaylin Page playing on 2-0 team at nationals

Auburn student Kaylin Page is a member of the Blitz 10U softball team which has won its two pool games in the national ASA tournament going on at Buchanon Park in Warren County. The Blitz beat the Georgia Red Devils 10-4 Monday and run-ruled the Georgia Thunder 13-1 Tuesday. The daughter of Troy & Alissa Belcher Page, Kaylin is the granddaughter of Kenneth & Becky Belcher of Russellville and Harold & Judy Page of Adairville. She is a member of the Logan County Middle School softball team, which is coached by her aunt, Julie McGee Belcher.

Girl with Logan roots playing in national tourney

Morgan Zuege plays middle infield for the 10U Lady Sluggers softball team from Louisville. She and her teammates are playing in the ASA national tournament at Buchanon Park in Bowling Green. She is a daughter of former Russellville High and Cumberland University tennis and basketball standout Libby Haines Zuege and her husband Steve, who is one of the coaches of the Lady Sluggers. Morgan's sister Jacklyn is an 8U All-Star in Louisville. They are the granddaughters of Shirley Haines of Russellville and the late Logan County Agriculture Agent Rodney Haines.

Tennessean chosen to coach Lady Panthers

A man new to Kentucky but certainly not to basketball was introduced as the new coach of Russellville girls basketball Monday. Justin McClellan is a native of Cookeville, Tenn. who played collegiately for East Tennessee State University. He has been an assistant women's coach at Fisk University and an assistant men's coach at Trevecca Nazarene, both Nashville colleges. Most recently he was head boys coach at Clarksville Northwest High, a school about three times the size of RHS. He also has six years military experience, including a tour of duty in Iraq. He was introduced to the press by Athletic Director Nathan Thompson. He will not only succeed former coach Dedra Adler, who resigned recently after eight years on the job, but he also will assume her teaching position at RHS.

Mason, Johnson on winning Blue Chip team

Sophomores Cierra Johnson and Taleia Mason of Logan County were members of the winning team at the Rick Bolus High Potential Blue Chip Camp at Georgetown College this summer. Additionally, Mason was named Best Defensive Player among the entire upperclass group, which included top players from across the nation. Bolus is considered one of the nation's most respected scouts, and his camp is one of the USA's premier gatherings of highly regarded players.
Additionally, junior Ben Wright of the Cougars participated in the boys Blue Chip Camp and gained valuable information on ways to improve his game, according to LCHS coach Lonnie Mason.

New Lady Panther coach to be named Monday

The next head girls basketball coach at Russellville High School will be introduced Monday afternoon, Athletic Director Nathan Thompson has announced. A new coach became necessary when Coach Dedra Adler resigned recently after eight years as head coach.

Registration, combines set for youth football

Registration and combines are scheduled for Jr. Pro & Youth Football (grades 3-6) in Logan County. Registration will be held at the Russellville Parks & Rec Office Saturday from 8:30-noon, Thursday, Aug. 1 from 5-7 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 2 from 8:30-noon. Combines will be held this Saturday at LCHS from 8:30-11 a.m. and Saturday, Aug. 4 at Rhea Stadium. One of the leaders, Mark Brown, says, “Even if you pre-registered you still need to show up to pay! If you do not, you will not get put into the draft.”

Auburn merchant Jimmy Burgher 90 Monday

James Burgher of Auburn will celebrate his 90th birthday on Monday, July 22. He is a sixth-generation native Logan Countian whose ancestors came to the Russellville area around 1810. A 1941 graduate of Russellville High School, he is among the oldest surviving WWII Veterans of the area, and is most noted for his business, Jimmy's TV & Appliance in Auburn, where he served the communities of Logan County for over 60 years.

Memorial service for Trayvon Martin planned

Justice for Trayvon National Day of Action will be observed in Russellville Saturday, July 20 at 8 p.m. in the courtyard of the Historic Logan County Courthouse in Russellville. A candlelight vigil will be held and ministers will speak. The event is open to the public. Teenager Trayvon Martin died from a gunshot inflicted by George Zimmerman in Florida in February 2012. Last week Zimmerman, 29, was found not guilty of either murder or manslaughter, triggering intense public debate.

Ice cream sales to help families at Christmas

Chaney’s Dairy will be in Russellville Friday selling its popular ice cream with part of the proceeds going to Christmas benefits provided by Logan Countians. Sharing profits will be Soldier Family Christmas and Brother Joe’s Family Christmas. The Soldier Family Christmas is a program designed to help Fort Campbell families begun by Logan Democrats. Brother Joe’s Family Christmas is the renamed Agape Toys for Tots, founded by the late Brother Joe Carrico. Joe Laird, Councilman Jack Whipple and County Democratic Chair Evelda Steersman are among the leaders of the event, which begins at 3 p.m. in front of the Chamber of Commerce. In addition to ice cream, those attending are invited to donate new unwrapped $10 toys for children age 10 and under.

Auburn natives open store, featured in story

Two Auburn natives were featured by a journalist who lives in Auburn in a recent issue of the Bowling Green Daily News, and the article involved more Auburn connections. Lisa Chasteen Proctor & Lauren Crawford have opened The Toy Store on Old Louisville Road near Bowling Green. The store features vintage toys, baby items, sporting goods, etc. The women told writer Robyn L. Minor that their inspiration for the store came from growing up in Auburn and enjoying the wonders of Cox Variety Store, owned and operated by the late Martha and Dick Cox. The store has been closed for several years but still has tantalizing items inside. Crawford and Proctor, who also have other jobs, are renting the building from another Auburn native, Bowling Green businessman Eddie Hanks. Many of the items for sale are on consignment. Public to choose movie in Lewisburg

Friday Nite Flix returns to old downtown Lewisburg this Friday night. The public is invited to bring a lawn chair, blanket, snacks, and soft drinks at 8:30 p.m. Spokesman Jeff Dye says, “We'll have two movies to choose from this week, "Oz the Great & Powerful" and "Rise of the Guardians.” The movie with the most votes or hands shown will be the one we show. Jacksons Orchard to be at Garden Market on Fourth Street in Russellville

Bill Jackson and Brent Price of Jackson's Orchard in Bowling Green have announced that they will be sending peaches to Russellville today (Thursday) for sale at the Kentucky Wonders Garden Market on East 4th Street. The market will begin at 12:30 p.m. Clay Turner of Turner Valley Produce will have vegetables for sale. The market will be open at the Historic Russellville building across from the Saddle Factory on Thursdays for the foreseeable future.

Parents of Logan middle school football players to be held next Thursday

David Bledsoe, the new head football coach for the Logan County middle school team, has announced a meeting for parents of prospective players on Thursday, July 11, at 5 p.m. at the Logan County High School gymnasium. Former Cougar football standout Todd Adler will be one of the assistants.

Democrat Grimes to challenge Sen. McConnell

Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, a Democrat, announced Monday that she will run for the United States Senate seat which has been held for decades by Republican Mitch McConnell. The Kentucky Democratic Party’s Dan Logsdon issued this statement from Gov. Steve Beshear: "I am very excited that Allison Lundergan Grimes has entered the race for the United States Senate, and pledge to do everything I can to assist her in defeating Mitch McConnell. For 30 long years McConnell has reigned over partisan dysfunction and played political games, bringing Washington, D.C. to a standstill instead of getting things done for the people of the Commonwealth and the nation. Secretary Grimes will be a strong candidate who will fight for our families and our nation."

Groups can apply for spay/neuter grants

The deadline to apply for grants to help low-income Kentuckians spay and neuter their pets is two weeks away, the Kentucky Animal Control Advisory Board has announced. Grant applications must be postmarked by July 15. Local governments and non-governmental organizations that apply must mail applications and attachments to: Spay/Neuter Kentucky Program, Kentucky Department of Agriculture, 500 Mero St., Frankfort, KY 40601. Applications that are late or incomplete will not be considered.
Applicants may request up to $5,000. The board has set aside a total of $150,000 for the current round of grants. The funds are generated by proceeds from the sale of Kentucky's spay/neuter specialty license plate.
