Panthers beat Falcons in home opener
|
|
The Russellville Panthers recorded an impressive home football opening win Friday. Coach John Myers' Panthers fell behind Fort Campbell early, took the lead at halftime, dropped back into a 28-28 tie and then won 42=35 at Rhea Stadium to go 2-0 on the season. The game will be aired today at 2:05 p.m. by 610 WRUS.
The Logan County Cougars looked good in an opening drive against South Warren, but a fumble led to the only touchdown the Spartans would need in a 50-0 win. Logan had no kicking game after Landon Stratton was injured before the game, and the Spartans continued to get great field position to start scoring drives. Still Coach Dain Gregory was pleased with the play of freshman quarterback Tyler Wright and junior receiver Kaleb Coursey.

South Warren, Ft. Campbell football to be here
|
|
Both football teams from the Land of Logan will be in action at home tonight. Andy and Zach Woodall will have the South Warren at LCHS game live on WRUS with pregame at 6:30. John Brett Reynolds and Alex Watkins will record the Fort Campbell at Russellville game (kickoff at 7) for airing on WRUS at 2:05 Saturday. Broadcasts are also on the WRUS website.

CrimeStoppers offering run or walk
|
|
Logan County Crimestoppers will sponsor their first “Run to Stop Crime” Saturday, Sept. 14 at Hampton Park. Registration starts at 7 a.m. with the race beginning an hour later. The fee is $30 per runner/walker. No animals are allowed. A medal will be presented to the top runner in each category. A T-shirt is guaranteed for each pre-registrant with limited availability on race day. Contact Chief Victor Shifflett at 726-7669 for more information. All proceeds go to the CrimeStoppers reward fund.

Death claims Logan librarian Linda Kompanik
|
|
Logan County Public Library Director Linda Kompanik, who successfully spearheaded the effort to build an expanded library building owned by the library board, will not get to be there for the move to the new facility this winter. Mrs. Kompanik died Wednesday after a lengthy illness that has kept her away from the library she loved for several months. She had been Logan librarian since 1995. Among many changes to the library during her tenure was the computerization of library services. A past president of Russellville Kiwanis Club, she and her husband John lived in Christian County. She was a 1973 graduate of Christian County High School. A Celebration of Life service will be scheduled later, according to Don Neagle of WRUS.

Centenarian throws out first pro pitch
|
|
A veteran 'pitcher' and his Russellville family were pictured on Page A-1 of Bowling Green’s Park City Daily News Monday. Clarence Morton Sr. of Allensville threw out the first pitch at a Bowling Green Hot Rods game this weekend. This came in honor of his 100th birthday on the 8th of August. Shown with him on the mound was his grandson, William ‘Jae’ Allison, founder of the Givin’ Back program for kids in Russellville. Another picture shows him sitting in the stands with his daughter, Levanora Allison, of Russellville. An accompanying story by Natasha A. Simmons tells about his baseball experiences over the last century.

Panthers build big lead, beat Trigg
|
|
After giving up a touchdown during the first two minutes of the game, the Russellville Panthers built a 41-7 lead at Trigg County Friday before substituting liberally in a 41-21 win. Coco Darden scored three touchdowns in the first half. Desmond Quarles and Dustin Morgan also rushed for touchdowns and Lee McMurry caught a touchdown pass from Barrett Croslin. Demarcus Hampton made some big runs and Rashaun Jones blocked a punt.

Clay Turner named state Local Food Hero
|
|
Clay Turner of Logan County's Turner Valley Produce was one of three vegetable growers from across the state who were honored at the Kentucky State Fair as Local Food Heroes. He was presented his award by Commissioner of Agriculture James Comer and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer in a ceremony at the Kentucky Proud booth Friday. The other two honorees were Mike Lewis of Berea and Ramsi Kamar of Louisville. Turner accepted on behalf of his three-person family operation, which includes his mom, Elaine Turner, and his sister, Lindsay Turner. The three Local Food Heroes will be honored again next week at LP Field in Nashville at halftime of the Kentucky-Western Kentucky University football game.

RHS Principal McDaniel takes medical leave
|
|
Russellville High School Principal Kim McDaniel has begun what she expects to be a short medical leave of absence while she recovers from extensive medical treatments. “My plan is to return mid-September, four weeks at the most,” she tells The LoJo. .Assistant Principals Lisa White and Brandon Blake will act on her behalf while she is out, and extra people will be on campus to help with monitoring and supervision duties. “We also are able to rely on our new school resource officer—Vince Brown—to help with hallway and classroom supervision,” she says. Mrs. McDaniel began teaching in the Russellville school system in 1994 and taught fifth grade science/math for 12 years. She served as the Curriculum and Assessment Leader for the middle school and high school from 2006-12 before becoming principal of the junior and senior high schools.

Coaches to resume WRUS program tonight
|
|
Nothing signals that football season is upon us more than the return of Coaches' Corner on WRUS. Logan County Cougars coach Dain Gregory and Russellville Panthers coach John Myers will talk about their teams and the season which begins Friday. The program is broadcast on WRUS (610 AM) each Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., originating at Roy's Bar-B-Q. Zack Woodall & John Brett Reynolds will interview the coaches. The high school season begins Friday with the Panthers going to Trigg County and the Cougars on the road at Butler County.

Countywide Summer Party now to be Aug. 24
|
|
CharacterWorks' Countywide Summer Party has been rescheduled for Saturday, Aug. 24 after having been postpone last Saturday because of heavy rain. The place (Summer Street adjacent to Rhea Stadium), time (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) and fun events will stay the same, says Logan County CharacterWorks Director Lisa White.

Paving underway at Russellville intersection near Walgreens, Farmers' Hardware & FSNB
|
|
Paving began Tuesday on the intersection project in downtown Russellville at 4th and Bethel Street where the new First Southern National Bank branch has been constructed. As this project draws closer to completion, work will be required in the actual traveled way of the intersection, according to Greg Meredith of the state highway department.. For two more days, travelers in this area will experience long delays due to lane closures and flaggers directing traffic to facilitate paving operations. It is recommended that motorists seek alternative routes in Russellville. Meredith says, "Remember to use caution and remain alert to changing traffic patterns if you have to travel in this area during the next few days."

Hampton to preach at Fellowship Sunday
|
|
Russellville native Jimmie Lee Hampton will speak at Fellowship Church of Christ Sunday morning. A graduate of Russellville High School, Hampton is a graduate of Lipscomb University where he was a member of the tennis team. The Nashville resident often is the speaker at Lipscomb Chapel services. He will teach the Bible Study class at 9:30 and then will preach at the 10:30 worship service. He will be filling in for his long-time friend Danny Williams, who is the congregation's regular minister. Fellowship is located at the intersection of Russellville's Franklin and East Fourth streets, across the street from the Logan County Health Department.

Abbey Hinton leaves Logan, Lady Cougars
|
|
Talented junior post player Abbey Hinton has left Logan County High School after one promising semester of action. Hinton transferred from a Tennessee high school to LCHS at the start of last season after having played on a championship travel team for Coach Scot MacAllister during summer ball. She had to sit out most of the first semester before being declared eligible by the KHSAA. Her Lady Cougar career started with great promise, as she led Logan to its first championship of the FSNB Christmas Classic. The season went downhill after that and MacAllister reluctantly resigned. Hinton's mother, Melinda Hinton, was vocal in trying to keep "Coach Mac" at LCHS, but he is now the coach of the Russell County Lady Lakers. Melinda Hinton told The LoJo Wednesday that Abbey has transferred to Friendship Christian, a private school in Lebanon, Tenn. The Lady Cougars had no seniors last year, so new coach Finley Woodard will have several experienced players to build around in her first year on the job.

A series of eight Wednesday evening discussions of the Beatitudes of Jesus (Matthew 5:3-11) begins tonight at Crittenden Drive Church of Christ with Andy Walker of Woodbury, Tenn. speaking on "Blessed are the Poor in Spirit." In future weeks, speakers (in order) will be Gary Puryear of Henderson, (former Crittenden Drive interim minister) Jim Brown of Cedar Hill, Tenn., Tom Riley (son of Barclay & Marilyn Riley of Russellville) of Nashville, Daniel Gaines of Bowling Green, Vashun Daniel, who is minister of Russellville's Knob City Church of Christ, of Lebanon, Tenn., former Crittenden Drive minister Andrew Phillips of Columbia, Tenn., and George Jensen of Hawesville. Services start at 7 p.m. each week.

Russellville schools to start for students
|
|
The 2013-2014 school year at Russellville Jr./Sr. High School begins Tuesday. "We have had two very successful open-house events and look forward to welcoming your students on Tuesday morning," says Principal Kim McDaniel. Start times for the middle and high school have changed. The first bell will ring at 7:55 with the warning bell at 7:59 and first period begins at 8 a.m. McDaniel adds, Our planned dismissal is for 3:05. Please be aware that the elementary routes determine how quickly the buses get to our campus."

Death claims former Russellville mayor Smith
Former Russellville mayor and Logan County Coroner Ken Smith died Thursday night at the Alive Hospice Center in Nashville where he has been a patient all summer, according to his daughter-in-law, Noel Smith. He has fought cancer and complications from chemotherapy for the past six years, she said. Among his survivors are wife Johnnie, sons Randy, Al and Jon Ray, daughter Frances Smith Keyes, brother Algie Ray Smith, sisters Ann Coffman & Pat Smith, and several grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Al Smith tells The LoJo, "My dad went Home last night to run more marathons with his Savior Jesus."
