Good News for September

As is usually the case, members of the Logan County Board of Education heard “Good News” from the schools in the district at their September meeting.

Adairville teachers Sandra Bollenbecker and Lori Bouldin introduced Bennie Guzman, Hannah Crutchfield, Dominque Goin, Dustin Brown, Olivia Bouldin, Allye Adams, Auburee Adams, Shelby Byrum, and Sarah Kate McLellan. The students presented a morning assembly program and ended with a song based upon the seven habits being learned in all elementary schools.

The following Good News reports were presented:

 

DISTRICT:

·        FRYSC had approximately 330 students who were fitted for new Nike Tennis Shoes though the Rotary Club’s Happy Feet Program.

·        Through the generosity of the community, FRYSC was able to help supply students with much needed school supplies.

·        Over 55 students are receiving weekend meals to help them have nutritious meals when school is not in session.

·        FRYSC has been able to furnish two families who were getting established in a new home after being homeless with furniture and household items. Churches, staff, and community donated furniture and items to get these families and students back on their feet.

ADAIRVILLE:

·         As part of Leader in Me Program, Adairville School has established a variety of student leadership positions. Students are applying for school-wide jobs and will be interviewed for the positions. A large number of applications were received, and the interview process is under way. Some of the positions posted were: Gym leader, Recycle team, Cafeteria leader, Welcome team, Primary buddies, Afternoon bus notes, Music leader, School Ambassador, etc.

·         Adairville Librarian Melinda Garrett conducted the annual Book Fair and reports that participation has been great with parents coming in before school to purchase books for their children and themselves

·         Staff members Victoria Finch, Carol Ann Dossett, and Meagan Owens completed masters degrees in special education and passed the Praxis for new certification.

·         Adairville School was selected by the Kentucky Department of Education as one of 49 Honorable Mentions regarding teaching conditions, school safety, and student achievement.

AUBURN:

·        Auburn School is proud to announce an Agriculture Education program for the 6th -8th grade students. The members are part of the Logan County Chapter of the National FFA Organization. Auburn School FFA members will represent the Logan County Chapter in various competitions at the KY State FFA Convention in June.

·         Auburn School was selected by the Kentucky Department of Education as one of 49 Honorable Mentions regarding teaching conditions, school safety, and student achievement..

CHANDLERS:

·         A record number of middle school students tried out for the Academic Team as over one-quarter of the students participated in the two-day event.

·         Over 40 gentlemen attended the annual Watch D.O.G.S kick-off event to promote male participation in the school.

·         Twenty-five third through fifth graders tried out for the Odyssey of the Mind extracurricular club promoting team-oriented real world problem solving.

·         Eighth grade Algebra I/math teacher Sheila Cunningham received two classroom grants-

o   The Reflex Grant, valued at $1225, is a web-based math facts program that will reinforce basic skills.

o   The Monsanto Grant for a pilot “Flipped Classroom” was also awarded.

LEWISBURG:

  • THE FRYSC provided an Artist in Residence that worked with 3rd – 8th grade students to design and paint a Leader in Me Mural on the Wall.Students were very involved from sketching ideas to painting the mural on the wall.There were also afterschool art classes with the artist in which students learned about art history, art techniques and created an art piece of their own.
  • On Aug. 27, the Lewisburg Junior Beta Club inducted 22 new members.The 2013 – 2014 club now has 45 total members and is looking forward to a successful year.

OLMSTEAD:

Olmstead’s Library has received a $2,000 Community Partnership Grant from Target.Grant funds will go towards an author event set for spring 2014 entitled-Family and Friendship through Author’s Eyes.

  • Stephanie Alvis was awarded a Pet in the Classroom grant of $150.
  • Guidance Counselor Candi McCullough partnered with Destiny O’Rourke from KHEAA Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority to do a Career College Readiness activity with the entire 8th grade.They discussed the Explore, The PLAN and ACT assessments.They also discussed careers and colleges.
