Lady Cougars win tight match for regional title

By the narrowest of margins, the Logan County Lady Cougars have won a return trip to the state volleyball tournament. Sophomore Chanler Steenbergen fired the go-ahead kill and freshman Catherine Miller served the two winning points as Logan won the fifth and final game 15-13 over tough defensive opponent South Warren in the regional finals Thursday before a standing room crowd at LCHS. Senior Rachyl Miller, who had been named Fourth Region Player of the Year earlier in the week, was also named MVP of the tournament. Joining her on the all-tournament team were seniors Maddie Abbott & Victoria Cates along with Steenbergen. Logan won the first game 26-24 but lost the second by the same score. With senior Katelynn Jones taking over the net in the third game, Logan won 25-20, but South took game four 25-21. Senior Brianna Wooden, freshman Amber Carroll, senior Savannah Shelton and junior Kapreshia Powell made key contributions along the way. The Lady Cougars will play 16th Region champion Raceland in their state opener Friday at Valley High School near Louisville.

Lady Cougars come back, reach regional finals

Down 2-0 at 7 p.m., the homestanding Lady Cougars won the final three games Tuesday in the regional semifinals. At 8:10, the Logan County Lady Cougars had beaten Bowling Green to reach their 10th regional finals in the past 12 years. Coach Steve Lyne's team led late in both of the first two games, but Bowling Green came back to win them both. Seniors Katelyn Jones, Brianna Wooden & Rachyl Miller, junior Kapreshia Powell, and sophomore Chanler Steenbergen were driving forces in keeping Logan alive. The Lady Cougars won the third game 25-19, but trailed 17-12 in Game 4. They came back with a pair of freshmen, Amber Carroll & Catherine Miller, serving. Senior Maddie Abbott was serving when LCHS tied the score at 2-2 with a 25-21 win. Catherine Miller served six successful points in the fifth and deciding game, and senior Victoria Cates shook off nagging injuries to play a key role in winning the rubber game 15-11. The Lady Cougars play the championship game Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against South Warren, which beat Russell County 3-0 in the nightcap.

RHS-South kickoff moved to 7:30 Friday

Superintendent Leon Smith & Athletic Director Nathan Thompson have announced that the kickoff for the South Warren at Russellville football game Friday has been moved back 30 minutes to 7:30 p.m. to keep from conflcting with Trick or Treating, which has been moved to Nov. 1 because of pending inclement weather. Senior Night activities will still begin at 6:30, Smith says.

Lady Cougars, BGH advance to semis

The Logan County Lady Cougars and the Bowling Green Lady Purples will meet in the regional volleyball semifinals Wednesday at 6 p.m. on Logan's home court. After BGH knocked off Clinton County, the Lady Cougars breezed past Allen County-Scottsville 3-0 in Monday's second game. Two more opening round games will be played tonight.

Mexican meal Friday a Christmas toy fundraiser

An "authentic Mexican meal" is being offered for delivery this Friday as a fund raiser for children's Christmas toys. It will consist of an enchilada plate (four enchiladas, rice and beans) for $10. The meal can be ordered through the Facebook page Christmas Toy Fundraiser or by contacting Jana Hunter Hardin or Natali Monroy Lopez. The meals will be delivered in Russellville. Those who live in other areas can picks theirs up at the Shell station on East Ninth Street in Russellville.

RHS band finishes 10th in state

The Russellville High School Marching Panthers, who are directed by Brian Brown, finished 10th in the state in their class in Louisville Saturday. Principal Kim McDaniel says, "Way to go band students!! A huge thanks to all the students and parents for their support of this program throughout the season. The RHS Band Boosters is a dedicated, supportive group and does so much for our band!"

Lady Cougars, BGH would meet in regional semfinals

Regional co-favorites Logan County and Bowling Green have drawn into the same bracket of the 4th Region Volleyball Tournament to be played at LCHS next week. BGH plays Clinton County at 6 p.m. Monday, followed by Logan entertaining Allen County-Scottsville. The Lady Purples and LCHS have each only lost once in the region, and that was to each other. If they win Monday, they will play Wednesday at 6.

Hamilton, Smith, Rostampour & Stratton score

For the fourth straight game, the Logan County Cougars scored twice Friday, but once again LCHS was on the wrong end of a running clock early and fell 70-14 at Warren Central. For the second straight week, sophomore Jarrett Hamilton threw a touchdown pass, this one to classmate Devin Smith for 50 yards as the first half neared an end. Also scoring for the Cougars was senior Brennan Rostampour on an 8-yard run to bring his total rushing yardage for the game to over 100.Landon Stratton kicked both extra points. Central's Raul Guillen, a soccer player like Stratton, kicked 10 extra points in his football debut. Eight players scored touchdowns for Coach Mike Rogers' Dragons, including Rondell Green, both on interceptions.

Free books part of Boo Bash Saturday

Logan County Adult Education is going to be at Boooooo Bash this morning giving away free children's books, which includes chapter books for tweens and teens, according to Family Education Coordinator Sharyl Markham. Books have been donated from Denver's library. The Boo Bash begins at 11 a.m at the Recreation Center (Old Armory), behind the post office.

Festival bike ride rescheduled Nov. 9

During this year’s Tobacco & Heritage Festival, the Chamber had to cancel the Ride of Champions Bicycle Ride due to rain. The event has been rescheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m., starting from Logan Memorial Hospital. Registration forms may be obtained at the Chamber office, Park Square, Russellville or online at www.loganchamber.com  Preregistration deadline is Nov. 6. Lady Cougars win 11th straight district title

The Logan County Lady Cougars won their 11th straight 13th District volleyball championship Thursday, beating host Franklin-Simpson 25-7, 25-7, 25-5 in the finals. Logan had beaten Todd Central and F-S had upset Russellville in opening rounds. The two wins ran Coach Steven Lyne's team's district win streak to 80 straight matches. Davonna Page named regional president

Russellville School Board Member Davonna Page has been named Kentucky School Board Third Region President.  She will be serving on the KSBA Board of Directors representing the third region. "Congratulations to Davonna!" says Superintendent Leon Smith. "We are proud of her leadership and dedication not only to our school district but to the state of Kentucky."

Cruise-In in Auburn Saturday to feature 50s

A 1950s Car/Motorcycle Cruise-In will be held Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in downtown Auburn. Dust off those leather jackets and poodle skirts, and come on out and enjoy the 1950's music, while looking at the automobiles and motorcycles of years gone by. Prizes will be awarded for Best 50's Hair Men & Women, Best 50's Outfit, Men & Women, Boy & Girl along with door prizes, including cash prizes drawn hourly for all automobiles/motorcycles that enter. Author of Red River book at library today

Melanie Meadow will be at Logan County Public Library this morning to sign her book The Waking Up. The theme involves a young woman experiencing the Second Great Awakening, which began at the Red River Meeting House between Adairville and Schochoh. The book signing will begin at 10:30 a.m. and books will be available for purchase. Prior to the signing, Meadow will join librarian Evelyn Richardson being interviewed on WRUS by Don Neagle, beginning at 9:05 a.m.

Mason Robertson catches two TD passes

Senior Mason Robertson caught touchdown passes from a pair of young quarterbacks Friday in the Logan County Cougars' 53-13 loss to Barren County in the final home game of the season. The passes were thrown by freshman Tyler Wright and sophomore Jarrett Hamilton.Coach Dain Gregory's team plays its final district game at Warren Central Friday.

Marching Panthers earn state band berth

The Russellville High school marching band placed fourth overall in regional competition at Hopkinsville Saturday and secured a spot in next Saturday’s state competition in Louisville. The band director is Brian Brown and Kelsey Harris is field commander. “It was a phenomenal performance,” says Principal Kim McDaniel. “These students work diligently through the heat of the summer and on a daily basis to make our band strong and competitive!  I couldn’t be more proud of such a dedicated group of students!”

Nick and Pat Kafoglis to be honored

The William H. Natcher Dinner honoring Mrs. Pat and Dr. Nick Kafoglis will be held Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the Knicely Conference Center West at WKU’s South Campus. Panthers win 47-0, run record to 8-0

Shutting out an opponent for the third time this year, Coach John Myers' Russellville Panthers won at Fulton City Friday 47-0. The win, which guaranteed RHS a home playoff game, ran their record to 8-0 heading into next week's showdown at Mayfield. The last six wins have been by four touchdowns or more, and five have involved a running clock via 40-point margin. A taped broadcast of the game can be heard on 610 WRUS today at 2:05 p.m. with John Brett Reynolds and Alex Watkins calling the action.

Cougars entertain Trojans for playoff spot

The most important 5-A district game of each season for the Logan County Cougars is tonight as Coach Dain Gregory's team entertains Barren County. The last two seasons, the winner of this game advanced to the playoffs while the loser was eliminated. Last year that winner was LCHS. The Trojans could finish third in the district with a win tonight, since they upset Greenwood a couple of weeks ago. One of tonight's highlights is honoring all senior athletes and band members. A list of them appears in a sports article inside. The game is being aired on WRUS by Andy & Zach Woodall.

Todd Central ends Cougar soccer season

The season ended for Coach Eric Evans' Logan County soccer Cougars Wednesday when they were beaten 3-0 by Todd Central’s .Jon Michael Brown, Chase Collins and goalkeeper Tyler Harris scored for the Rebels. Host Franklin-Simpson beat the Rebels 5-1 in the Thursday championship game. Logan finished the season with an 8-7-1.

Lady Cougars repeat as district soccer champs

The Logan County girls soccer team won its second straight 13th District championship Thursday, beating Todd Central 3-2 on extra kicks. Coach Dan Duncan's Lady Cougars, who had the best regular season record in District 13 and thus the bye, at Franklin-Simpson. Todd advanced to the finals by beating F-S 3-0 Wednesday. Shelby Ellis scored two goals for the Lady Rebels with Sydney Wofford getting the other. Ashley West was the goal keeper in the shut out. Both Logan and Todd will advance to the regional tournament.

Services set Thursday for Harold Prince

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Dean Funeral Chapel in Adairville for former long-time Logan County magistrate Harold Prince, who died Monday at the Alive Hospice Center of St. Thomas Hospital West in Nashville. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour Thursday, He is survived by his wife Cecil, his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Cynthia Prince, his daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Ronald Kelly and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Fite makes cut in state golf tourney

Sarah Fite, a freshman from Logan County High School, made the cut at the state girls golf tournament at Bowling Green Country Club this weekend, She got an 82 Friday to make the cut Friday and added a 92 to that on Saturday. Ethan Meguiar is the LCHS golf coach.

Golf scramble Saturday for Ralph Parrish

A benefit night golf tournament will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, for former Russellville High School football standout Ralph 'Tree' Parrish. He and his brother, Barry Parrish, started on two of the great Panther teams in 1969 and 1970 for coaches Stumpy Baker & Jim Gladden. Ralph has advanced Stage 4 terminal prostate cancer, according to his nephew, Oscar York. The fee is $200 per four-man team. The tournament starts at 3 p.m. at Rolling Hills Golf Course.

RHS Baseball Golf Scramble Oct. 19

The Russellville High School Baseball Team will hold a golf scramble Saturday, Oct. 19, at Rolling Hills Golf Course. A shotgun start will begin at 8 a.m. Three team prizes will total $900, and prizes will also be given for longest drive and closest to the pin on two holes. Also planned are $500 in door prizes. Logan County 4-H fund-raising meal Wednesday

Logan County 4-H is offering a luncheon Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the Extension Office. Tickets can be bought in advance or at the door. The menu includes a choice of ribeye, chicken or hotdog. A $6 plate gets a meat, chips and dessert. A $3 kids' plate is for hotdog and chips. Drinks are 50 cents each. All Proceeds will benefit the Logan County 4-H Council. Meals will be served from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Delivery is available with orders of five or more plates.

Memorial service for Linda Kompanik Sunday

A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 13, to honor the late Logan County Librarian Linda Kompanik, who died after a lengthy illness this summer. Logan County Public Library will be closed all this weekend, Saturday for the Tobacco & Heritage Festival and Sunday for the service to honor Mrs. Kompanik's memory. The doors will open Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and the memorial will begin at 2.

Lady Cougar Fite earns state golf berth

Freshman Sarah Fite of Logan County High School qualified for the state golf meet in Bowling Green Tuesday by shooting a 79 on the Tompkinsville Country Club course. The top four individuals who aren’t on the top two teams at region get to move on to state. A transfer from Mason County, Fite has played in the state tournament previously as part of her team there, according to Coach Ethan Meguiar. More details about the regional tournament will appear on The LoJo later.

Cougars to host powerful BGH Thursday

After a break-through night Friday that found freshman Tyler Wright completing 21 of 48 passes for 284 yards and 2 touchdowns, Mason Robertson catching 11 passes for 198 yards and a touchdown, Brennan Rostampour rushing for 94 yards on 15 carries and the team scoring three times as many points in one game than they had all year, the reward for the Logan County Cougars is playing the number one team in the state overall with a 36-game win streak. Coach Kevin Wallace's utra-successful Bowling Green Purples come to Cougar Field Thursday as Coach Dain Gregory's Cougars open Class 5-A district play. Game time is 7 p.m. Andy and Zach Woodall will air the game over WRUS, beginning at 6:30.

Cougar Basketball Skills Clinic Oct. 19

The Cougar Basketball Skills Clinic will be held Saturday, Oct. 19 at LCHS. Sessions will be from 9-11:30 a.m. for Grades 5-8 and 1-3:30 p.m. for Grades 9-11. FSNB to showcase new location Oct. 19

First Southern National Bank will move into its new Bethel Branch in Russellville this month. Branch Manager Tracey Gilbert says that an open house will be held Saturday, Oct. 19 from 2-5 p.m. for the public to see the new building. FSNB employees and their families will get a special preview this weekend, she said. The majority of bank offices and most of the tellers will move to the new location, which is at the intersection of Hopkinsville and Bethel streets in the former location of Felts Finer Foods and the north side of Bethel Shopping Center. The new drive-through has six state-of-the-art bays. The drive-through behind the Main Branch on Carrico Park Square will close after Oct. 18 in preparation for the grand opening of the new facility on Monday, Oct. 21. Gilbert says plans are being made for the Main Branch to benefit the community, but that a couple of tellers will still be there to conduct business, including senior teller Betty Lou Wright.
