Autism awareness observance scheduled April 2 at City-County Park
|
|
World Autism Day is this Wednesday, April 2. It was just released last week that a shocking 1 out of 68 children are affected by Autism. To promote awareness and acceptance of Autism, everyone is invited to come to the Russellville City Park at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Melissa Campbell says, “We are going to light it up blue for Autism by releasing blue balloons with facts about Autism. Let's join together, Logan County. Show your support and acceptance by wearing blue, bringing a friend, and celebrating and honoring the many individuals on the spectrum.”

Blanket Trade Days on Red River grounds this weekend
|
|
The 6th Annual Blanket Trade Day at the Red River Meeting House at Schochoh will be held this weekend, April 4-6. This is a living history event focusing on portrayals of 1750-1815. Friday is setup day for campers, both primitive and modern. On Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., blanket trading will be open to all. Non-reenactors are welcome to set up a yard sale blanket/table to lay their items on. At 5 p.m., a community potluck will be held with a round robin at 7. On Sunday at 10 a.m., a period worship service will be open to all before the event closes. Firewood and water are furnished. There is no camp fee. No pets are allowed. An adjacent camping area is available for modern tents and campers without water\electric hookup. For more information, contact Tom Ruley at 270-586-7632. RCS may offer first grade classes
|
|
Russellville Christian School is considering adding a first grade class. The board met Sunday, March 23, with 17 families interested in enrolling their children in a first grade class, members of host Crittenden Drive Church of Christ learned this week. Applications are now being taken, and the class must have at least 12 students to become a reality. These plans must be finalized by April 15. A certified teacher will be employed for the class if it 'makes." Sharon McIntosh is director of the school. which has offered preschool and kindergarten classes since the 1970s, and David Stuart is chairman of the board. UK beats Michigan, heads for Final Four
|
|
Surviving one of the toughest regionals any team has ever experienced, the Kentucky Wildcats earned a berth in their third Final Four in four years by beating last year’s national runner-up, Michigan, 75-72 in Indianapolis. Aaron Harrison hit a pair of 3-pointers in the closing seconds, including a 24-foot game winner with 2.3 seconds remaining. The Wolverines’ Nik Stauskas, who had scored 18 points in the first half, missed a tying attempt from midcourt. Along the way Coach John Calipari’s team had won two other close games in the tournament against another pair of 2013 Final Four teams, knocking off undefeated Wichita State and defending national champion Louisville. Julius Randle scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for UK. Another freshman, seldom used Marcus Lee, was a force for the Cats, scoring 10 points and grabbing 8 rebounds while filling in for the injured Willie Cauley-Stein. Stauskas finished with 24 points forCoach John Beilein’s Wolverines. UK plays Wisconsin in Fort Worth, Texas this weekend. Florida and Connecticut are the other two Final Four teams.

Cats come back to beat Cards 74-69
|
|
The Kentucky Wildcats continued their remarkable turnaround of two seasons of disappointment Friday by coming from behind to beat defending national champion Louisville in the Mideast Regional semifinals in Indianapolis. Coach John Calipari's Wildcats trailed by 13 early and by 7 late, but came from behind to win 74-69. Dakari Johnson, Aaron Harrison & Julus Randle scored 15 points each while Andrew Harrison added 14. They are all freshmen. Seniors Russ Smith & Luke Hancock scored 23 and 19, respectively, for Coach Rick Pitino's Cardinals while sophomore Montrezl Harrell, whose foul problems were a factor, added 15. Injuries to the two teams' centers also were a problem. Kentucky's Willie Cauley-Stein suffered an ankle injury in the first half and didn't return to the game. Louisville's Stephan Van Treese had his nose smashed early in the game, tried to play later, but didn't score. UK now plays for a trip to its third Final Four in four years Sunday against last year's national runner-up, Michigan, which edged Tennesse by two points in the opening game at Indy.

A new website debuted Thursday with the publication ofhttp://www.turnervalleyproduce.com. Turner Valley Produce is located at 2575 Bowling Green Road, Russellville, across from Logan County High School's cross country track. It is operated by Clay, Elaine & Lindsay Turner. The website includes pictures of the operation along with a video about Turner Valley Produce produced by WKU PBS and widespread news stories about Clay Turner's being named a Local Produce Hero in Louisville last summer. The website was created by brother/son Trey Turner, whose New Age Moguls company builds websites, apps, and appointment scheduling technology along with providing mass texting service for businesses and professionals. DeGraffenried Chorale concert April 6
|
|
Two of Gabriel Faure`’s most popular musical works will be presented by deGraffenried Chorale on Sunday, April 6, at 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Temple. Cantique de Jean Racine, written when Faure` was only 19 years old, holds a cherished place in the choral repertoire for both sacred and secular occasions. This familiar piece is always most-loved and enjoyed of all who hear it, according to Chorale publicist Ann Rose. The Requiem, lasting only 35 minutes, consists of seven movements, the most famous of which is the soprano aria Pie Jesu, which will be sung by Iris Walton Perez. Also soloing in the Requiem will be Wade Baker. Those in key roles are director Mary Beth Dowden and accompanist Susan Fox.

Bar-B-Q pit to reopen April 1

Roy's Bar-B-Q will reopen its "Little Pit" on Franklin Street/Bowling Green Road on Tuesday, April 1 at 10 a.m., co-owner Roy Morgan has announced. The smaller branch of the legendary eatery has been closed for five months because of the illness of its manager, Michelle Morgan, Roy's wife. She is much healthier now. "Several of us will help her as she fully regains her strength," Roy says. The larger Roy's restaurant on Sarah Lane has remained open during the interval.

Baseball Clash delayed a day, softball date not yet announced

The first softball and baseball Clashes of the Cats this season were scheduled for Tuesday, but Logan County Athletic Director Hugh McReynoldsannounced Monday that both games have been postponed because of the forecast of. Later in the day McReynolds said the Russellville-at-LCHS baseball Clash will be held Wednesday at 5 p.m., varsity only. No date has yet been announced for the softball Clash, which will feature new RHS coach Brandy Nuyt Trimble against her alma mater, LCHS.

Area basketball season ends but UK and UofL teams still alive
|
|
The area basketball season ended Saturday when both the Bowling Green Purples and WKU Lady Toppers lost in tournament play. Coach D.G. Sherill's Purples lost 81-68 to Covington Holmes in the state tournament's Final Four. Coach Michelle Clark-Heard's Lady Toppers lost 87-74 to heavily favored Baylor in the NCAA Tournament, WKU cut the lead to four late in the game. Coach John Calipari's University of Kentucky Wildcats play undefeated Witchita State in the Round of 32 in the men's NCAA Tournament today. Coach Rick Pitino's University of Louisville Cardinals won their 12th NCAA game in the last three years Saturday in a bruising battle with St. Louis. The defending national champs will meet the UK-Witchita winner later this week in Indianapolis. The Louisville and Kentucky women won their NCAA openers earlier this weekend and continue their quests toward the Final Four in Nashville.

Bollenbeckers honored for adoptions

A Russellville couple was honored Tuesday at the Cabinet for Health and Family Services Department for Community—Based Services. Educators Tim and Sandra Bollenbecker received the Outstanding Service Through Adoption Award. The Bollenbeckers have seven children, five of them adopted. Their children are Timothy, Travis, Justin, Bryce, Olivia, Landon and Nicholas Bollenbecker. They also have one foster child currently. Sandra is quoted by Daily News reporter Alyssa Harvey as saying, “I told Tim I wouldn’t take an engagement ring from someone who wouldn’t adopt or foster some day.”

Petrie files for state representative
|
|
Todd County attorney Jason Petrie Tuesday filed his candidacy for state representative as an independent in District 16, which covers Logan and Todd counties. He will face incumbent Martha Jane King, the lone Democratic candidate. No Republican filed. Petrie originally filed to run for district judge, but he withdrew to seek the state representative’s post. The remaining two candidates for district judge, Ken Williams of Logan County and Nan Calloway of Todd County, do not have to run until November. Incumbent Judge Sue Carol Browning is not seeking another term.

UK, UofL handed disappointing NCAA seeds in same bracket
|
|
The last two NCAA men's national basketball champions, the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville, were handed disappointing seeds in the 2014 tournament which begins this week. Coach Rick Pitino's Louisville Cardinals, who are ranked fifth in the nation and won both the regular season and tournament of the American Athletic Conference, were banished to a number four seed. Coach John Calipari's UK Wildcats, who were ranked first in the nation to start the season and lost by only a point to the nation's current top-ranked team, Florida, in the SEC finals Sunday, were seeded eighth in the same Midwest bracket. If the seedings hold up, UK would have to play UofL in the third round. Four of the top five ESPN analysts-- Jay Bilas, Digger Phelps, Jay Williams and Dick Vitale--Sunday night picked Louisville to meet Big Ten champion Michigan State, also a number four seed, in the national finals. Louisville will play Coach Steve Masiello's UMass team Thursday in Orlando. The Cats will take on Kansas State Friday in St. Louis. Undefeated Wichita State, Big Ten regular season champion Michigan and ACC runner-up Duke are also in the Midwest Region.

Work to start Monday on improvements to KY 79 near Chandlers School
|
|
A new re-alignment project for KY 79 in Logan County starts Monday, March 17. Scotty’s Contracting and Stone was awarded the $3.7 million contract. The project begins near Chandlers Chapel Elementary School (MP 6.5) and extends north approximately a half mile through Davenport Hill (MP 7.0). A new bridge at Motts Lick Creek will also be constructed. According to Wes Watt of the District Highway Department, vegetation clearing is scheduled to start Monday and motorists need to slow down when approaching this area.

Young men die in vehicle crash

Two young men from Logan County died as the results of a traffic collision near Portland, Tenn. early Thursday morning, multiple courses are reporting. The deceased are Cody Yell, 23, of Adairville and Connor Edwards, 21, of Auburn. Alex Reed of Auburn was injured in the violent collision with a truck that was stopped to turn.

Bodies of dead dogs being found
|
|
WBKO television news reported Wednesday that the bodies of four dead dogs have been found in Logan County recently, three of them inside Russellville. All of them appeared to have been emaciated and abused. The possibility of them having been used in dog fighting is being investigated, the report said. City Police Officer Mary Lynn Moore and Humane Society Director and Animal Control Officer Kathy Maddox were quote in the story by Melissa Warren.

Conservatives prefer Rand Paul
|
|
For the second straight year, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Bowling Green has won the straw poll for presidential preference at the Conservative Political Action Conference at Oxon Hill, Md. Bloomberg reports that he won 25 percent of the votes. A distant second was Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas with 11 percent. Also finishing behind him in order were retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. Paul’s wife is the former Kelley Ashby of Russellville. His father, Rep. Ron Paul, won the poll in both 2010 and 2011.

Coach Justin Stinson’s Glasgow Lady Scotties, who have already won the Class A state championship, took a big step on their way to an overall title Sunday by overwhelming Bowling Green 79-59 for the regional championship. Sensational sophomore Bree Glover totaled 34 points, 16 rebounds, 3 assists, a block and a steal from her point guard position. WKU signee Shalika Smith had 20 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Emily Alexander added 17 points. For BGH, Oneisha Turner was most of the show with 32 points and 12 rebounds. The Lady Scotties open play in the Houchens Industries girls state tournament at Diddle Arena Wednesday at 8 p.m. against 11thRegion champion Lexington Lafayette.

Monroe ends season for Panthers
|
|
The 13th District basketball season ended Saturday night when Monroe County (22-10) beat Coach Phil Todd’s Russellville Panthers (11-19) 75-58 in Glasgow. Coach Stephen Kirkpatrick’s Falcons shot 64 percent in the first half (16 of 25) but led only 35-31. They shot 57 percent for the game and out-rebounded the Panthers 22-6 in the second half. Skyler Geralds, who hit 9 of 12 from the field, led the winners with 19 points. Monroe, in fact, had four guys named Geralds in double figures with Devin & Dillon scoring 12 each and John 11 in just nine minutes of action. Dillon Geralds had the same number of rebounds as the entire RHS team with 18.Lee McMurry led the Panthers with 16 points, Barrett Croslin 14, Coco Darden 8,Pedro Rivera 7, Christian Naylor 6, Jaylin McMurry 3 and Micah Naylor & Tremon Morris 2 each. The 13th District champion Panthers ended their season in the school’s 11th straight regional tournament at 11-19. Monroe will play Warren Central in Monday’s second semifinal.

In games ending in identical scores, Glasgow (27-6) and Bowling Green (21-5) advanced to the 4th Region girls basketball championship game with 64-56 semifinals wins Saturday afternoon at Allen County-Scottsville High School. Coach Justin Stinson, a former teacher and coach at Logan County High School, directed the Lady Scotties past South Warren with sophomore Bree Glover scoring 23, freshman Ellie Bartley 16, WKU signeeShalika Smith 13 and Emily Alexander 10. Glover had 11 rebounds and 4 assists. South (23-8) was led by Colby Downing with 22,Amaya Lasley with 15 and Timitryi Pattersonwith 12. BGH was led by Oneisha Turner with 26 in Coach Lavonda Johnson’s team’s win over 13th District runner-up Franklin-Simpson (24-5). Coach Josh Matthews got 16 points from senior Jenna Curtis along with 12 points, 3 assists and 2 steals from eighth graderKeely Morrow. In her last game for the Lady Cats before heading to Austin Peay State University, Sydney Gooch had 15 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. The championship game will be played at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The Lewisburg Rural Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual bean and ham supper, which has been scheduled for several months, will be held today, beginning at 4:30 p.m. It will include auction items including a cake auction, and karaoke byClay Bilyeu, will be held tonight at Lewisburg School. Franklin-Simpson ran its record to 23-5 Thursday with a 49-32 win over Clinton County in the girls regional basketball tournament. Jenna Curtis scored 16 and Megan Krantz 12 for Coach Josh Matthews' 13th District runners-up. Sydney Gooch had 9 points, 4 assists and 2 steals and Keely Morrow 9 points and 2 each of assists and steals. The Lady Cats will play Coach Lavonda Johnson's Bowling Green Lady Purples (20-5) in Saturday's second semifinal at Allen County-Scottsville. BGH held off AC-S (27-3), which had been the favorite until an injury to star player Morgan Rich. The championship game will tip off Sunday at 3 p.m.

Community Education Coordinator Alicia Carmichael has announced that both classes scheduled for Thursday night have been postponed. They are a guitar class taught by Charles Crafton, and an EXCEL class tuaght by Diane Crawley. They will resume next week.

Both school systems to remain closed
|
|
Both Logan County and Russellville schools will remained closed Thursday because of weather issues. Russellville students will definitely be out of school Friday, as well. Superintendent Leon Smith of Russellville says, "There will be no school in Russellville Independent Schools on Thursday, March 6due to inclement weather. Professional Development will be this Friday, March 7. Stevenson Elementary staff will report to Stevenson and Russellville Jr./Sr. High will report to the Technology Center." Smith had earlier explained that the speaker at Friday's session is under contract and that he is going to address is crucial to the school system's goals.

Russellville schools will be dismissed again Wednesday because of weather. Superintendent Leon Smith also has announced that students will still be out of school Friday for a Professional Day. "This may be questioned by the public but we have a contract with an out-of-state presenter, Dr. John Antonnetti. We have had this contract for a year and he is very difficult to reschedule. This PD with Dr. Antonnetti is related to what our middle and high school staff will be implementing for the remainder of the 2013-2014 school year." No decision has yet been announced for Thursday.

Hairitage Salon ribbon cutting delayed

The Logan County Chamber of Commerce has announced the postponement of a ribbon cutting which had been scheduled for Wednesday. April Triplett of the Chamber says another date will be set for a ribbon cutting for Hairitage Salon, Brooke Johnson and Darla Baldwin, owners, which is located at 1120 West Ninth Street, Russellville.

With very little improvement in weather or road conditions, Logan County Schools, Russellville Schools, and Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College will be closed again Tuesday, officials have announced. Morning classes at WKU are canceled but classes beginning at 12:45 p.m. or later will be held.

SES Principal Brown resigning

At the end of one year on the job, Stevenson Elementary School Principal Debbie Brown will vacate the position this summer, according to Russellville Schools Superintendent Leon Smith. She announced to her staff in late February that she “would be submitting her resignation and planned to look for other opportunities. She has enjoyed her time in Russellville but felt like she wanted to pursue other opportunities in education. She has worked the majority of her years in elementary education,” Smith said. Brown, who had been instructional supervisor for Todd County schools, was chosen last year to succeed long-time SES Principal Tammy Corum, who retired. This is the third principal search in three years for the city schools, which have only two principals. Kim McDaniel was named principal at Russellville High School two years ago when John Myers was promoted to the central office.

Weather delays funeral services again
|
|
Funeral services for Howard Holloway have been delayed again because of weather, Price Funeral Home has announced. Visitation now will be Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. with services at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A complete obituary for Mr. Holloway appears in the Obituary section of The LoJo, although the times are incorrect.

|
|
Both the Logan County and Russellville school systems will be closed Monday because of weather conditions, as will all campuses of Western Kentucky University and Southcentral Kentucky Community & Technical College. The Logan County Community Education One-Hour Bread class is being postponed. Alicia Carmichael & Diane Crawley of community ed will notify registered students when that class will be rescheduled.

Funeral services postponed for Howard Holloway because of weather
|
|
Times for visitation and funeral services for Howard Holloway of Russellville have been changed, according to Trent Price of Price Funeral Home in Lewisburg. Mr. Holloway was found deceased Friday. Originally visitation was to be Sunday night and the funeral Monday, but now the visitation will be Monday from 5-8 p.m. and the funeral Tuesday at 10 a.m. More details are in the obituary section of The Logan Journal.
