Bethel Dipper featured in BG paper

A Russellville landmark has the honor of being the first in a series about "iconic spots in communities where residents gather for food, fun or conversation." Justin Story's article about the Bethel Dipper is in the Saturday Bowling Green Daily News today. The business was started in the Bethel Shopping Center adjacent to Walden Tire almost 60 years. The current owner and manager, Nancy Carter, worked for her grandfather, Tom Powell, and her dad, Earl Powell. The article is on Page 6A and online. The Logan County Public Library keeps editions of the newspaper for several days.

Joiner leads UK to World Series
|
|
Led by junior catcher Griffin Joiner and sophomore pitcher Kelsey Nunley, the University of Kentucky softball team won two of three games in the NCAA Super Regional against host UCLA last weekend and plays Southeastern Louisiana University in the NCAA National Tournament in Oklahoma City at 6 p.m. today on ESPN2. It’s the first-ever World Series appearance for the Lady Cats, who are coached by Rachel Lawson. Joiner, who ESPN announcers note has caught every pitch thrown by UK pitchers this season, hit a grand slam (her second of the season) in Game 1 and hit a key 2-run double on Sunday. Her four RBIs on Saturday are a UK NCAA tournament record. Joiner is the great-niece of Ann Shelton Bailey of Lewisburg and the granddaughter of Logan County natives Glenn Smith and Dixie Shelton Dennis.

South ends Logan season 6-2
|
|
The season and defense of their Fourth Region championship came to an end for the Logan County Cougars Memorial Day as Coach Ethan Meguiar's team fell 6-2 to South Warren at WKU. The Spartans led 4-0 before the Cougars could score twice in the fourth inning. Caleb Bruner pitched for Logan and had seven strikeouts. Some infield errors hurt the Cougar cause early. Cameron Shyrock pitched six innings for Coach Chris Gage's Spartans. Ty Pitts, the grandson of Ron & Paula Timberlake of Russellville, pitched the final inning. Logan finished with a 26-10 record. Either Russell County or Franklin-Simpson will win its 27th game Tuesday. They were both winners Monday and will play each other in the semifinals. The win improved South's record to 25-13.

The Logan County Cougars will have to go to work from the first pitch if they are to repeat as Fourth Region Baseball champs. Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team drew 14th District runner-up South Warren for a 4 p.m. start Memorial Day at the WKU baseball field. The teams have played twice this year. South won 4-3 early in the season and Logan shut out the Spartans 1-0 in the last week of the season. Logan has won 26 games and South 24. The survivor will play the Glasgow-Cumberland County winner at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The finals will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. 13th District runner-up Franklin-Simpson plays 14th District champ Bowling Green at 1 p.m. Monday.

Barry Wright was on 2012 ballot
|
|
The Democratic Primary election which Barry Wright won Tuesday was not his first time on the ballot. The Logan Journal had incorrectly said it was. Wright ran in 2012 for the remaining two years of the unexpired term of Third District magistrate Curtis Watkins, who died while in office. Wright had been appointed to replace him. No one ran against him in that 2012 race, but his name was on the ballot. He had five opponents this month and won with ease.

All Relay campsites already filled
|

With two weeks remaining until the annual Logan County Relay for Life, all 21 campsites around the Logan County High School football field are filled, Laura Jaynes reports. Thirty teams will participate in the event in addition to others who come to be part of the special night. "This is the first time in several years we've been filled up," Jaynes says. "There will be a huge variety of food and activities."

Thompson, Sydnor, McGinnis of LCHS qualify for state track meet
|
|
Three Logan County Cougar multi-sport seniors will be competing in the KHSAA 3A State Track and Field Championships this weekend in Lexington. At the regional meet in Elizabethtown, Michael Sydnor, a member of the football team, qualified for state in the triple jump for the third straight year. Joe McGinnis, who also plays on the tennis team, made it to state as regional runner-up in the discus. Deja Thompson, who has played basketball throughout high school, competed in track for the first time and qualified for state by placing third in the shot. Greg Howard is the veteran Cougar track and cross country coach.

LoJo draws million hits in 21 days
|
|
The Logan Journal achieved a milestone Tuesday when the online newspaper surpassed the million-hits mark for the month of May in just three weeks. The LoJo has been averaging over a million hits per month throughout 2014, but this month the seven-figure plateau was reached in just 21 days, almost 50,000 hits per day. “We are pleased so many people are making The LoJo their source of local, well-written news,” said Publisher Trey Turner. “Our advertising has grown dramatically this year, too. Our rates are more than reasonable, and businesses taking advantage of them are getting a lot of exposure for a small price. Everything seems to be coming together for The LoJo.”

Incumbents reign in primary elections
|
|
Incumbents who faced opposition won Tuesday's Primary Elections. They included two countywide office holders, Sheriff Wallace Whittaker & Coroner Mary Givens, both by big margins. Five magistrates won their races. Four of them--Jack Crossley, Barry Wright, Drexel Johnson & Thomas Bouldin--were reelected, since they don't face opposition in the fall. A fifth, Russell Poore, won the primary but will face GOP nominee Dickie Carter in November. All but Bouldin won with ease. He came out ahead of Clay Bilyeu by 53 votes. Races for jailer were both close. Phil Gregory edged Chris Hightower by 32 votes in the GOP race. Wendell Jackson won over Edward Hardin by 298 votes. They will square off in the fall.

Cougars shut out F-S for district title
|
|
The Logan County Cougars are the 13th District baseball champions once again. With Caleb Bruner pitching the shutout, Ian Woodall driving in Jacob Wood with the only run the Cougars would need, and Matt Harper circling the bases on a ball he hit to the left-centerfield fence for an insurance run, Coach Ethan Meguiar's team had enough offense to repeat as champion. Meanwhile third baseman Joe Holliday and leftfielder Daniel Beaty made some sensational defensive plays late in the game to preserve the shutout. Victoria Cates to play volleyball and softball at Illinois college
|
|
Logan County High School senior Victoria Cates will sign to play college volleyball and softball with Lincoln Trail College in Illinois on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the media center. During her four years with the Lady Cougar Volleyball program, Cates helped the team record a 117-38 record with an Elite Eight finish in the state tournament, a regional championship, two regional runner-up finishes, and four 13th District championships. She has also been a starting catcher and pitcher for the softball team. The Lady Statesmen compete in the state's well respected community college system.

|
|
The softball season came to an end for teams from the Land of Logan Monday in the semifinals of the 13th District Tournament. Coach Brandy Trimble's Russellville Lady Panthers held Franklin-Simpson to 11 runs but couldn't score themselves. Coach Calvin Head's Todd Central Lady Rebels upset Logan County 9-7, even though Logan had won their regular season meetings. The finals will be played Wednesday at F-S.

F-S edges Panthers, to meet powerful Logan in district finals
|
|
Despite a great comeback by the Russellville Panthers, the winngest teams in the Fourth Region will meet in the 13th District Baseball Tournament finals Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Logan County High School. After falling behind Franklin-Simpson 6-1 Monday, Coach Greg Shelton's Panthers came back to trail just 7-6 before falling to the Wildcats 8-6. In the opener, Coach Ethan Meguiar's Cougars struggled early but roared late to beat Todd Central 9-2 behind the pitching of Joe Holliday & Hunter Britt. Both LCHS and F-S have won 25 games, including 6-1 records in the district. In the regular season they each won on their home field by a single run. Kimberly Baugh named Scholar of the College at WKU

Kimberly Baugh, a graduate of Russellville High School, was named a Scholar of the College during Commencement at Western Kentucky University Saturday. Scholars of the College have the highest GPAs in their college. Baugh, the daughter of Mike and Angie Baugh of Russellville, earned the honor from Ogden College. She earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and is an Honors College graduate.

This is the final week of school in the Russellville Independent system. According to RHS Jr./Sr. High Principal Kim McDaniel, this is the schedule: Monday—Final Exams for 2nd and 5th periods and Senior Trip to Holiday World; Tuesday—No school for students for Election Day but teachers will report to help fulfill annual days; Wednesday—Final Exams for 1st and 4th periods and 8th Grade Trip to Holiday World; Thursday—Last day of school for students, final exams for 1st and 4thperiods; senior graduation practice at 8:30 a.m. after which seniors who have completed their paperwork will be dismissed; 8th grade ceremony practice at 10 a.m.; parents wishing to pick up students after lunch can do so, student drivers can leave with parental permission, and buses will run at normal dismissal times; Friday—8th Grade Ceremony at 6 p.m. at deGraffenried Auditorium with a dance immediately afterwards in the high school lobby for 8th graders only; Saturday—RHS Commencement Services in Jim Young Gymnasium at 10 a.m. Seniors should be at school by 9 a.m. for pictures and practice.

Bluegrass Festival underway at Auburn
|
|
The 25th Annual Logan County Bluegrass Festival makes its two-day run Friday and Saturday at Auburn's McCutchen-Coke Park. Officially 'jamming' begins this evening, but Bluegrass pickers, singers and enthusiasts have been picking and grinning all week. The energetic Jaymes Dulworth has worked diligently to line up featured performers and publicize the event. Dulworth is a member of the group 79 Grass, which will perform both days, Also in that group is Otis Bilbrey, the founder and guiding life of what was first known as the Bluegrass Jam. No admission is charged. Those attending are asked to bring lawn chairs but not bring alcohol or drugs.

Lewisburg native Greg Shelton, who is in his second year as coach of the Russellville Panthers, will go for his 900th win as a head baseball coach Thursday when RHS hosts Butler County at 5:30. Most of Shelton's wins, including a state championship, came at Franklin-Simpson. He also coached Beech in the Hendersonville area. "Coach Shelton has a good opportunity to make that his 900th win. That will be out last home game of the season, and it would be great to have a good crowd in attendance to show our support," says Superintendent Leon Smith. David Clark to coach F-S Lady Cats

Only a few days after Josh Matthews resigned as coach of the Franklin-Simpson girls basketball team, a familiar name has returned to lead the Lady Cats. David Clark tells The LoJo that he has accepted the offer to coach the team. Clark has been highly successful as both the girls and the boys head coach at F-S. He resigned as the boys coach three years ago, but coached the middle school girls last year in conjunction with former Lady Cat coach Lex Lindsey.

Miller, Wilkins, Croslin honored
|
|
On May 4, Logan County High School seniors Rachyl Miller (volleyball)and tennis player Adam Wilkins attended the SCORES (South Central Outstanding Regional Excellence in Sports) banquet at the Corvette Museum Conference Center in Bowling Green. They were recognized as Wendy’s Heisman school winners. This award is based on academics and athletics. Also at the banquet, Russellville High School senior Barrett Croslin was recognized as the school’s Top Male Athlete. Warren Central’s Chris Porter Bunton, son of former Auburn High star Kenneth Bunton, was recognized as the area’s top male basketball player, Justin Stinson, who previously coached in the Logan County system, was named Male Coach of the Year for coaching females, the state Class A champion Glasgow Lady Scholars.

Jefferson still top WKU draft pick
|
|
Joseph Jefferson's place in WKU Football history remains intact. The Logan County High School graduate was taken in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, and that still is the highest pick for a former Topper. For the first time since Jefferson and Mel Mitchell were taken 12 years ago, two Toppers were drafted this weekend, but linebacker Andrew Jackson went to the Colts in the sixth round and free safety Jonathan Dowling to the Oakland Raiders in the seventh round. Zack Greenwell reports in the Daily News that running back/kick returner Antonio Andrews signed a free agent contract with the Tennessee Titans, linebacker Xavius Boyd with the Baltimore Ravens and fullback Kadeem Jones with the St. Louis Rams. Tight end Jack Doyle made the Colts last year as an undrafted free agent while defensive end Quanterus Smith, a 2013 fifth rounder, spent last season on the Denver Broncos' injured reserve.

Former Cougar trackster Johnson excels in field and classroom
|
|
Former Logan County Cougar Aaron Johnson competes for Campbellsville College track and in the Mid-South Conference Championships threw the discus 136 feet, 8 inches, qualifying him for 6th place. That throw was better than the NCAA qualifying mark. Johnson also broke the school record in the hammer throw with a throw of 110 feet, 5 inches, breaking the old record by over three feet. His discus throw earned him a spot in the NCAA National Track and Field Championships in Rome, Ga, “Aaron learned his technique while competing at LCHS and has honed his skills at the collegiate level. I can’t explain how proud and excited I am for Aaron and his family,” says Cougar coach Greg Howard. “While competing for Campbellsville he has also been named Mid-South Conference Academic All Conference and has been named an NCAA Academic All American!”

Logan-Todd, RHS vs. F-S matchups featured in tourneys
|

Logan County and Russellville have settled into opposite brackets in the 13th District baseball and softball tournaments. Coach Ethan Meguiar’s Cougars tied with Franklin-Simpson at 5-1 for the top spot in baseball, and the Cougars won the coin flip. They will meet number four Todd Central (0-6 district) at 5 p.m. Monday, May 19, at LCHS. F-S will meet Coach Greg Shelton’s third-seeded Panthers (2-4) at 7:30. The championship game will be played at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20. Host Franklin (6-0) is the top seed in the softball tournament and will meet Coach Brandy Trimble’s Lady Panthers (0-6) at 5:30 p.m. May 19. The second game—scheduled to begin at 7—will match Coach Michael Crawford’s second-seeded Lady Cougars (4-2) against Todd Central (2-4). The championship game will be played Wednesday, May 21, at 6. Josh Matthews resigns as F-S coach
|
|
Logan County High School graduate Josh Matthews has resigned as coach of the Franklin-Simpson Lady Cats after three seasons. He told the Daily News that he wants to pursue a career in administration. Matthews was a junior college head coach for several years before coming back to Franklin, where his dad, Bob Matthews, was a highly successful coach. Bob Matthews also was a winning coach at Russellville High School, and Josh attended both RHS and LCHS before playing junior college basketball in North Carolina. The Lady Cats won 19 games two years ago and 24 this year, but they were upset by Coach Finley Woodard's Lady Cougars for the 13th District championship. Earlier this spring, Todd Central girls coach Steve Phillips resigned. Woodard is now the senior girls coach in the 13th District, since she was hired a few weeks ahead of Russellville's Justin McClellan.

The NFL Draft has begun with the selection of Jadeveon Clowney of South Carolina by the Houston Texans. Soon we'll know if the record held by Logan County High School graduate Joseph Jefferson will remain intact. Jefferson is the highest draft pick in WKU football history. He went in the third round of the 2002 draft and became a starter for the Indianapolis Colts at defensive back. Senior Toppers Antonio Andrews, Jonathan Dowling, Andrew Jackson & Xavius Boyd are all hoping to be drafted.

Shawn Ross chosen to lead Russellville Fire Department as chief
|
|
Russellville City Council approved Mayor Mark Stratton's recommendation Tuesday that Owensboro fireman Shawn Ross become Russellville's new fire chief, succeeding the retiring Billy Poole. The five-year veteran of the Owensboro department then was introduced to the firefighters he will lead. WRUS News reports that Ross is the brother of County Attorney Joe Ross and holds two degrees from Western Kentucky University.

The Harlem Wizards will bring their brand of fun basketball to Russellville's Jim Young Gymnasium tonight to play a group of local 'celebrities.' Among those scheduled to play are former UK football starter Mikie Benton; Russellville Athletic DirectorNathan Thompson, who was a key player on the Panthers' back-to-back Final Four teams; Trey Turner, the only two-time Kentucky Nike HoopStar from either Logan County or Russellville who played college basketball at Hanover; and Victor Hampton, who had excellent basketball and track careers at RHS. The game, which starts at 6:30 p.m., is a fundraiser for Logan County Little League Baseball. Tickets are $10 at the door. Katelyn Jones of LCHS reaches regional tennis quarterfinals

Logan County multi-sports standout Katelyn Jones has reached the singles quarterfinals of the Fourth Region Tennis Tournament. The number one player for Coach Dan Duncan's Lady Cougars, the senior won two matches in straight sets Saturday at Kereiakes Park in Bowling Green. She will play number two seed Lauren Wiseman of Bowling Green High Monday. Jones and Palmer Lessenberry of Glasgow are the only two players among the eight still in contention who are not from Warren County. Jones has also been named to all-star teams as a starter for Logan's regional champion volleyball team and the district champion basketball team.

RHS Academic Awards to begin week of displays, book fair
|

The 13th Annual Russellville High School Academic Awards Ceremony will be held Monday, May 5, at 6 p.m. in the RHS Gym. According to Principal Kim McDaniel, over 200 students will be recognized for a variety of awards and honors during this event. Invitations have been sent to students receiving awards for this ceremony. The RHS Book Club will also be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair during the awards ceremony and throughout the rest of this week. The RJSHS Art Club will also be hosting its annual art show in the lobby. Brenda Brown is the art teacher.

RRFD fund raiser Saturday
|

Russellville Rural Fire Department’s annual fund raiser will be held Saturday, May 3, at 5 p.m. at the fire department. Door prizes, cotton candy, a kids’ bouncy, and a $300 grand prize will be part of the evening. A pulled pork loin plate will be available for $7 and a hot dog plate for $4. Music by Clay Bilyeu and live band entertainment will be provided.

Pork chop grilling offered downtown today for Concerned Citizens

Concerned Citizens of Russellville/Logan County is offering a grilled pork chop meal in front of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce on Carrico Park Square from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today. A meal of pork chops, chips, cookies and a drink will cost $6. Donations will also be accepted. Community leaders are helping with the grilling. Funds will be used on the After School Tutorial program, the Summer Program and the Food Bank. Milam resigns as county ag agent
to work for company coming to Auburn
|

Logan County is in need of a new county extension agent for agriculture and natural resources. Chris Milam, who has held the position ever since the retirement of the late Rodney Haines, has resigned to become the liaison between the farm community and Logan County's newest industry, Russellville Rotarians were told Thursday. The president and CEO of Champion Petfoods of Alberta, Canada, talked with Don Neagle on WRUS before appearing before the Rotarians. Milam, who as president of the Logan Economic Alliance for Development (LEAD) helped attract the company to an 84-acre tract of land just east of Auburn, has also been president of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce and has been instrumental in the development of the county's massive, state-of-the-art UK Ag Extension Complex on the 68-80 Bypass in north Russellville. The UK Agriculture Department is taking applications online for a replacement for Milam through May 20. Extension agents and staff are officially UK employees.

Chamber ribbon cutting today for new Brown Animal Hospital
|
|
A ribbon cutting will be held at 11:30 this morning for Brown Animal Hospital, which is operated by Dr. Jenny Brown-Todd and is located at 153 South Summer Street in Russellville in the long-time office of Dr. Jim Chambers. The Logan County Chamber of Commerce will conduct the ceremony. Dr. Brown, a graduate of Russellville High School, is the daughter of educators Larry and Brenda Brown and the wife of RHS basketball coach Phil Todd.
