SKYCTC offering course on new medical coding

The implementation deadline of ICD-10-CM medical coding (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification) is Oct. 1, 2015.Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College is offering ICD-10-CM training in Bowling Green and Glasgow this summer.

This course provides instruction on the layout of the ICD-10-CM, coding and chapter specific guidelines, the history and future of ICD-10 CM and the latest coding conventions. In addition, this course will provide the learner with opportunities for actual practice utilizing the ICD-10 CM to enhance the learning experience.

WHAT IS ICD-10 CM?

This course provides instruction on the layout of the ICD-10 CM, coding and chapter specific guidelines, the history and future of ICD-10 CM and the latest coding conventions. In addition, this course will provide the learner with opportunities for actual practice utilizing the ICD-10 CM to enhance the learning experience.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course the learner should be able to –

? Describe the difference between ICD-10-CM and ICD-9-CM

? Correctly utilize the coding conventions and the official coding guidelines for inpatient, outpatient and/or physician cased coding

? Code to the appropriate level of specificity either to the category, 4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th

 character depending on code requirements

? Tab ICD-10-CM book correctly for speedier coding

? Correctly code external causes including cause, place and activity

? Code without fear

 

CLASS SYLLABUS

Course Assessment:

Learning objectives will be measured by a 10-question quiz at the end of each area covered. A score of at least 70% should be obtained by  the learner in order to achieve a certificate for successful completion.

Topics:

? Introduction: Overview, Coding Conventions, Guidelines

? Coding Infectious and parasitic diseases, neoplasms, nervous systems, disorders of the eye and adnexa, diseases of the ear and mastoid process

? Coding mental and behavioral disorders, diseases of the blood and blood forming organs, circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems

? Coding diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissues, of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue, genitourinary system

? Coding for pregnancy, complications of pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium, conditions originating in the perinatal period and congenital malformations

? Coding symptoms, signs, abnormal clinical laboratory findings, injury poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes of morbidity, coding for factors influencing health status and contact with health services.

International Classification of Disease, Tenth Revision,

Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) is a revision of the ICD-9. It uses alphanumeric codes to identify diseases and health problems. There will now be more than 68,000 codes in the ICD-10 compared to 13,000 in the ICD-9 with twice as many categories.
