Kemp ends tenure as superintendent

This is the final day of Marshall Kemp's tenure as superintendent of the Logan County Schools, a position he has held for 15 years. He submitted his letter of retirement to the board of education in January. He also has served as superintendent of the Russellville Independent Schools, assistant superintendent of Logan County Schools. and principal of Adairville Elementary. Dr. Kevin Hub, who has been an administrator in Madison County, will assume his duties as Kemp's successor Tuesday.

CharacterWorks Character Celebration set Aug. 9 at new library

The annual Logan County CharacterWorks Character Celebration will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, at the new Logan County Public Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Planners promise it will be "free and fun for everyone." Activities will include games, a water slide, live music by Trey Farlee, free Italian ice and other food. Lisa White, the new Stevenson Elementary principal, heads the county-wide organization and would welcome hearing from those who would like to help.

Thompson resigns as RHS athletic director, to be followed by Head

RHS Athletic Director Nathan Thompson has resigned from that position, he announced Friday. He said, “After much thought and discussion with my wife Laura, I have decided to step down as athletic director of Russellville High School. My last day officially will be next Monday, June 30. Due to the nature of the position, we didn't wait long to find a replacement. I'm pleased to announce that the new athletic director of Russellville High School will be Calvin Head.” Thompson, who had an outstanding athletic career in three sports at RHS, is a loan officer at First Southern National Bank. He continues as the school’s golf coach and is the head coach of a Russellville-based semi-pro basketball team, the Bowling Green Hornets. Head was recently introduced as the Lady Panther basketball coach and previously served as boys basketball and girls softball at his alma mater, Todd Central.

Little League district tourneys start

Logan County Little League is sending three All-Star teams into district action at Ephram White Park in northeast Warren County, starting Friday. Names of players and coaches along with the schedule can be found in a Sports Article on The LoJo athttp://www.theloganjournal.com/Stories.aspx?Article=sports518. The schedule of each game can also be found in the Crabtree Community Calendar on the Home Page of The LoJo.

Country Cause Concert set Saturday

The Logan County Foster and Adoptive Parents Association fundraising event, Country Cause Concert featuring Adam McPhaill, will be held this weekend and The Bluegrass Volunteers have been added to the lineup. The concert will be held at The Barn On Oakville Lane on Saturday, June 28 with food and silent auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. and music beginning at 6. Seating is available and those attending can bring a quilt or chairs for seating on the grounds. This event is open to the entire family. Tickets are $20 per person. Proceeds will assist with training for Logan County Foster Parents and fun and education events for children in care in Logan County.

Estes, Stuart attend WKU ag event

Two Logan County FFA members participated in the ASSET (Agriculture Students Striving for Effective Tomorrows) Conference hosted by the WKU Department of Agriculture June 16-19.  The five-day conference is designed for students who have completed their junior years of high school and are interested in studying agriculture in college. The conference focused on activities involving leadership, communication, social development, making the most of a college experience, and life awareness associated with agriculture. Attending from LCHS were Wesley Estes and Nick Stuart.

RHS offices closing for dead period

According to Russellville Jr./Sr. High Principal Kim McDaniel, "The KHSAA 'dead period' will begin June 25 and last until July 9. No activity of any kind can take place during this observed period. The RMS/RHS offices will also be closed from June 23-July 4 and will reopen on July 7."

LCHS offices to be closed during sports dead period starting Tuesday

Logan County High School administrative and guidance offices will be closed during the KHSAA dead period from June 24-July 9.  Principal Casey Jaynes says, "We appreciate your support during this time frame to allow our faculty and staff to take some time off during the summer months."

Holliday signs with national champs

Logan County third baseman Joe Holliday signed Saturday to play baseball for Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn. Holliday batted .325 for Coach Ethan Meguiar's 26-game-winning Cougars with 6 doubles, two triples, a homer, 16 RBIs. 25 runs scored, 15 walks, and the fewest strikeouts on the team (7 in 144 plate appearances). He also won three games pitching with a 2.064 earned run average. His parents, Phil & Jan Holliday, credit former Russellville star P.J. Jones, who played for Cumberland coach Woody Hunt at Cumberland before being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles, for making Hunt aware of Holliday. Hunt has coached the Bulldogs for 34 seasons and won his third NAIA national championship this spring to go along with two national runner-up finishes.

Jeff Moore, father of Cpl. Josh Moore, dies unexpectedly

The father of a Logan County hero, the late Cpl. Josh Moore, died unexpectedly in his sleep at home last night, according to family friend Jeff LawsonJeff 'Seymore' Moore was an employee of Daniel Construction assigned to providing support at Logan Aluminum, which is located near his home on what is now Cpl. Josh Moore Memorial Highway. Josh Moore died seven years ago while serving America in the Middle East. His parents, including devoted mom Carolyn Moore, have been diligent in keeping his memory alive.

Shelton resigns as RHS baseball coach, takes Christian Co. job

Greg Shelton has resigned as Russellville High School baseball coach, Assistant Coach Greg Owens tells The LoJo. Shelton, a Lewisburg native, coached the Panthers for two seasons. His teams went 36-32, including 10-19 in the Fourth Region. Shelton won his 900th game this season, most of them during a Hall of Fame career at Franklin-Simpson. Owens says Shelton will become head coach at Christian County, which has gone 47-35 in outgoing coach Grayson Crawford's two seasons, both ending as Second Region runner-up. Shelton will have almost five times as many boys to choose from at CCHS. According to the KHSSA, 627 of 1,257 students at the Hopkinsville school this year were boys. Of Russellville's 290 students, 135 were boys. The Panthers lose three super players in seniors Barrett Croslin, who was named the Fourth Region Athletic Directors Player of the Year, Zach Denney & Corey Wright.

Cougar Bruner 2nd team all-state

Honors continue for Logan County junior Caleb Bruner, the Fourth Region Baseball Player of the Year. He has been named second team all-state by the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association. The only other Fourth Region player honored was Glasgow senior Ryan Hinkley, who was third team all-state. Kaleb Duckworth of Henderson County, who has signed with WKU, and Lexington Tates Creek's Devin Hairston, a Louisville signee, were co-Mr. Baseballs. WKU also has signed Mr. Football Nacarius Fant and Miss Basketball Ivy Brown.

White leads cheering in BG as USA wins World Cup opener

While the United States was pulling off a 2-1 win over Ghana in a World Cup first round match in Brazil, Jonathan White of Russellville was leading the organized cheering in Bowling Green. Chad Bishop wrote the lead sports article in the Monday Daily News about White's putting together a chapter of the American Outlaws, a nationwide group with over 18,000 members in 137 cities. The purpose of the Outlaws is to build interest in and support of national soccer. The group watched America's thrilling win at Hiligans dining establishment, and there's no doubt they were loud when Clint Dempsey scored for the U.S. in the opening 30 seconds, the fastest goal by an American in World Cup history, and when John Brooks headed in the match winner in the 86th minute, four minutes after Andre Ayew had tied it for Ghana. The only down side was a painful injury suffered by American standout Jozy Altidore. 
Jonathan White is a former All-District soccer player for Russellville High School and is now the school's assistant soccer coach. He also the Adairville Baptist Church youth pastor.

Freeland, LCHS FFA lead nation in Ram truck test drives

Freeland CDJR of Russellville and Logan County FFA chapter led the nation in test drives of Ram trucks during a special promotion on Saturday, April 26, manager Nick Rice announced this morning on WRUS. A total of 439 people took a test drive, resulting in a donation of $8,780 to the LCHS FFA chapter. That was double the number of the second place finishers among 150 participating dealerships, Rice said. As the national winner, Freeland will host a private concert by country music star Easton Corbin in August for FFA members, test drivers and special guests. Joining Rice in making the presentation on WRUS were FFA Treasurer Connor Williams and reporter Jessica Brown.

Old Courthouse Jamboree series to begin Saturday afternoon

The Old Courthouse Jamboree begins its Summer Series today in the courtyard in downtown Russellville. Bluegrass, gospel and country music will be played on the second Saturday or each month from 1-5 p.m. Special guests and local musicians will be playing. Those attending are invited to bring lawn chairs. Concessions will be provided by local non-profit organizations. Today's featured guests will include The Bilbreys, Dawn Michelle & The Sawyer Brothers. This is sponsored in part by Logan County Tourism. Procter, Bruner & Harper to play baseball in East/West Jr. Showcase

Three stars of high school baseball teams from the Land of Logan have been chosen to play baseball in the East/West Junior Showcase on Wednesday, June 18, at Lexington Bryan Station High School. They are Jacob Procter of Russellville and Matt Harper & Caleb Bruner of Logan County. They all just completed their junior years.

Airport receives expansion grant

U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield (KY-01) has announced the Russellville-Logan County Airport Board will receive a federal grant of $367,957.00 for the county’s airport. The award, given by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), will fund the design of a runway extension, which will allow it to meet the operational needs of the airport.  The funding will also help acquire approximately 11 acres of land.

Car show, rally open weekend activties of Purple Martin Festival

The Purple Martin Car Show open this weekend's Lewisburg Purple Martin Festival, although some preliminary events have been held. The car show begins at 5 p.m.Friday and lasts until dark. There will also be a Purple Martin Rally, which is a Tricycle, Bicycle and Power Wheel Race! Vendors will begin setup at 3 p.m. and have their booths open during the show.

Sleeper Agent to perform in BG on July 4 and then appear on Letterman July 9

Sleeper Agent, a band whose single "About Last Night" has been number one two consecutive weeks, will perform a free show in downtown Bowling Green on the Fourth of July at the new Hitcents Plaza with fireworks to follow. The band is also scheduled to appear on the David Letterman Late Night show on July 9. Band co-founder Tony Smith, a guitarist and vocalist, is the son of Russellville native Patty Smith and her husband Galen Smith of Bowling Green.

Diabetes education event postponed

The Diabetes education event which was to be held Tuesday in Russellville has been postponed because of conflicts. Kathy Thweatt of the Barren River Health Department says it will be rescheduled for the fall.

Khalia Hampton to play for APSU

Khalia Hampton, a four-year basketball starter for the Russellville Lady Panthers, will be a preferred walk-on for the Austin Peay Lady Governors. Athletic Director Nathan Thompson made the announcement at the introductory press conference for new Lady Panther basketball coach Calvin Head last week. Hampton played for Coach Dedra Adler most of her career and for Coach Justin McClellan last season.

Rich Hendrick named to Hall of Fame

Former Bristow and Western Kentucky University basketball star Rich Hendrick will be one of the inductees in the 2015 class of the Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame, which has been named this weekend. He is married to Carol Holman Hendrick, a graduate of Russellville High School who also taught at her alma mater. Rich Hendrick was a banker in Logan County for several years. More details of Hendrick's career at Bristow and WKU will appear later on The LoJo.

Tractor show underway in Auburn

The annual Logan County Antique Gas Engine and Tractor Show is underway today at McCutchen-Coke Park in Auburn. The tractor parade begins at 10:30 a.m. Weigh-in for the tractor pull begins at 11 with the pull starting at noon. A kiddie tractor pull will be held during the afternoon, and the park is filled with displays of old tractors and engines. No admission is charged. Drexel Johnson is in charge of the event.

Services today for Larry Moore, co-owner of The Harvest

Funeral services will be conducted today (Saturday) for Russellville businessman Larry Moore, who died June 2. He and his wife Stephanie, were co-owners and operators of The Harvest grocery store on East Fourth Street along with his step-daughter,Leslie Dunning and her husband Tony. He was also a realtor. He was active in the Masons, Shriners and Gideons. Services will be held at 2 p.m. at Young Funeral Home's Russellville location.

Library reading program opens Friday with demo on stuntology

The Summer Reading Program at Logan County Public Library will kick off Friday with a presentation by stunt master Sam Bartlett at what is usually Storytime during the school year. He will perform tricks and then show youngsters how to do stuntology. Times are 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Johnson, Harris lead LCHS graduates

Logan Johnson was named valedictorian and Grace Harris salutatorian Tuesday when Logan County High School held its 2014 Commencement at Diddle Arena on the WKU campus. One of the highlights was honoring Superintendent Marshall Kemp, who is retiring at the end of this month after over 42 years of service to local education. Calvin Head to coach Lady Panthers

Former Todd Central softball and boys basketball coach Calvin Head was introduced as Russellville's new girls basketball coach Tuesday afternoon. Head coached Lady Rebels softball for five seasons and Rebels basketball four years, both ending this season. He is a former Todd Central and Lindsey Wilson basketball player and was named to the Kentucky East-West Senior basketball game in 2006. Head succeeds Justin McClellan, who coached Lady Panther basketball last season. Watch The LoJo for more details.
