Suspect arrested in Rigney murder

A suspect has been arrested in the murder of Brad Rigney, 36, in Russellville. According to WRUS News, Gerald Allen Benjamins was found and arrested Monday in Jeffersonville, Ind., just across the river from Louisville. Mr. Rigney, an employee of Adairville School, was found dead in his Rhea Boulevard home on Dec, 28 by his brother, Tiger Rigney. Russellville police plan a press conference at department headquarters Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., according to WBKO.

Gospel Singing set for Festival

The annual Old Time Gospel Singing which is part of the Logan County Tobacco & Heritage Festival, returns on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 1:30 p.m. at the Historic Logan County Courthouse. Featured artists include Marty Brown Jr. & The Praise Band, The Senior Gospel Heirs, Russ Funk, Warren David Wright, Larry Houchin, The Greater Life Trio, Pete Lehman, Daniel Vaughn & Kevin Bratton, Nick & Dee Dee Reed, Travis Bryan, and more. Franklin leaves Rhea with 21-20 win

Franklin-Simpson squeaked out a 21-20 win over the Russellville Panthers Friday at Rhea Stadium. Nick Groves scored the tying touchdown late in the third period and the Cats kicked the conversion. Russellville threatened late in the game, thanks to a 40-yard completion by Jaylin McMurry on a tremendous catch by his brother, Lee McMurry. But Jaylin missed on a pass to Coco Darden near the end zone for an interception, and Groves kept picking up first downs to run out the clock. Desmon Quarles ran with power for the Panthers, scoring the first Panther touchdown, Josh Bigbee ran 89 yards for a score, and Johnny Drumgole scored a touchdown one play after his hold had nullified a Darden TD. A fumbled kickoff that went F-S' way set up the winning score. The loss was Russellville's first of the season. Coach Doug Preston's Cats improved their record to 4-1.

Auburn students to bike, walk to school as a group Thursday morning

Auburn Elementary School will conduct its annual Walk/Bike To School Day Thursday, Sept. 25. Principal David Ward says, "Students will meet at our local city park and make their way to the school at 7:25 a.m. All students will receive a certificate of participation."

R Club selling bricks for Rhea wall

The newly established "R" Club is selling bricks to be placed at the Summer Street entrance to Historic Rhea Stadium. Currently, 300 bricks are available for sale, with a price of $75 to $100 (depending upon size). For more information, contact Ann McReynolds or Greg Owens. Proceeds will go the construction of a memorial at the stadium and special needs of the RHS football team.?

LCHS Festival of Bands Saturday

The Logan County Festival of Bands will be this Saturday, Sept 20 at the high school. The opening ceremony will be at 4:30 p.m., awards at 8:30. Bands attending include Russellville, Todd County, Butler, Franklin-Simpson, South Warren, Warren East, Grayson, Allen County-Scottsville, Breckinridge County, Greenbrier High School (Tennessee). Admission is $5 and concessions are available. At the Russellville show on Saturday, Logan County placed second in its class, and also second overall, giving the Marching Cougars the Reserve Grand Champion award for the second weekend in a row. David Dayton is the director, assistant director is Mandy Beasley, and Molly Bell is the field commander.

Panther tickets can be bought early

The RHS Panthers will play Todd Central in the McCracken County Bowl at McCracken County High School. The game will begin at 2 p.m.., followed by Calloway-Bullitt Central at 4:30 and McCracken-Southaven at 7. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students. Tickets for adults/parents can be purchased online in advance to avoid lines at the game: 1. Go to the McCracken County High School's website. 2. Click on "here" where it says "Purchase your tickets online here."
3. Follow the steps to purchase and print tickets at home. These will be scanned at the gate and will help avoid a wait at the door.

Riley to speak on Living Joyfully

As part of Crittenden Drive Church of Christ's Summer Series, Tom Riley will speak today at 7 p.m. on the subject "Living Joyfully." This is part of an eight-week series with the theme "Restoring My Soul." Riley is minister of Bellevue Church of Christ in the Nashville area and is the son of long-time Potter Children's Home Director Barclay Riley and his wife Marilyn, who are members of Crittenden Drive.

Adult Ed offering open house

Logan County Adult Education Week is Sept. 22 -26. The Adult Ed staff invites everyone to an Open House on Thursday, Sept. 25 from 2-6 p.m. to be held at the Logan County Adult Learning Center, located at 121 South Spring Street in Russellville. Program Director Pam Morgan says, "Everyone is invited to visit the learning center, enjoy refreshments and register for door prizes."

Panthers vs. Rebels begins at 2

Athletic Director Calvin Head has announced that Russellville's game against Todd Central in the McCracken Bowl in Paducah will begin at 2 p.m. instead of 3. The game will be aired live over WRUS with John Brett Reynolds and Chris McGinnis calling the action.

Panthers win Clash 55-12

Russellville continued its undefeated season and its recent dominance over Logan County Friday at LCHS with a 55-12 win. Coach John Myers used the evening to get experience for sophomore quarterback Jaylin McMurry, and moved regular QB Coco Darden to running back. Darden scored 2 touchdowns, rushed for 94 yards, caught a 27-yard pass, and intercepted 3 Cougar passes. Johnny Drumgole scored 2 touchdowns, one coming on a fumble recovery, and Mason Aquirre scored on a blocked punt. Josh Bigbee, Jecory Bard and Desmon Quarles also scored rushing touchdowns. McMurry ran for a two-point conversion and Milam Watkins kicked five extra points. M.J. Jones and T.K. Hampton combined on a fumble recovery.

Coach Steve Duncan’s Cougars had several highlights. Their first touchdown came on a 4-yard run by Anthony Oberhausen after a 57-yard kickoff return by Luke Woodall. Oberhausen scored the final TD on a 58-yard pass from Tyler Wright. Kaleb Coursey caught a long pass from Wright.

Music on the Farm to be held

Saturday at Shakertown

Music on the Farm, sponsored by Col. Robert and Cora Jane Spiller will be held this Saturday from 2-5 p.m. on the Shaker Farm at South Union. Director Tommy Hines says, "Imagine how nice it will be to feel the cool fall breezes wafting through the 1875 Grain Barn, listening to live music while strolling across the Shaker farm, and enjoying afternoon dessert! Kick back in a relaxed family atmosphere and partake in some traditional Southern delicacies, including fried peach pies, apple cider slushes, and homemade Shaker Sweet Potato Pie ice cream from Chaney’s Dairy Barn."  Tickets: $15 per person, $25 per couple, $5 children ages 6-12.

Final Old Courthouse Jamborees of summer set Saturday in Russellville

The final Old Courthouse Jamboree of the summer will be held this Saturday at the Historic Logan County Courthouse, according to organizer Don Rust. The show starts at 1 p.m. Among the entertainers will be The Bilbreys, Tim Harris of WRUS, and Ken Jolly with Alan Goins. It will be outside in the courtyard unless weather conditions force a move inside. There is no admissison charge.

Marching Cougars win Class AAAA,

place 2nd overall at F-S

The Logan County High School Cougar Marching Band competed at the Franklin-Simpson Marching Invitational this Saturday, Sept. 6. The Cougar Band placed 1st in Class AAAA and Best Color Guard in Class AAAA. The Cougar Band also placed 2nd in the overall competition regardless of class, earning them the Reserved Grand Champion Award.

City Jr. Pro signups Oct. 2

Dome Theater coming to

Stevenson Monday, parents invited

The Dome Theater mobile planetarium is coming to the Stevenson Elementary School gymnasium Monday, Sept. 8! During the school day, students will learn about topics such as dinosaurs, oceans, and space. Between 5-7:30 p.m. parents are also invited to the Dome; each program runs about 20 to 25 minutes, and the last show starts at 7. This event is part of the SES-PTO 2014-15 membership drive. For more information about the Dome Theater:

Coursey, Wright put Cougars on 1st scoreboard of season

Kaleb Coursey scored the first touchdown of the season for Coach Steve Duncan's Logan County Cougars Friday. He and quarterback Tyler Wright connected on a 50-yard pass in the second quarter, delaying the running clock until the second half in a 55-6 loss at Franklin-Simpson. The Cougars got into the F-S red zone on their last two possessions, but fumbled on fourth down both times, the first resulting in an 80-yard return by Josiah Robey. What proved to be the winning touchdown and extra point came on a pass from Colton Hurt to Cody Uhls plus a kick by Evan Figert.

Watch D.O.G.S. Kickoff Dinner with Dad is schedule tonight at Stevenson Elementary School from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. SES students and their dads or other important men in their lives are invited to come eat pizza, enjoy some time together, and learn more about the Watch D.O.G.S. program at SES.

The Stevenson Elementary School Fall Festival has been postponed, according to school spokesperson Donna Brown Wilkerson. The PTO has moved the date to Saturday, Sept. 20. The times will remain the same, including an auction from 1-3 p.m.

Auburn man part of free concert

Spirit of the Commonwealth, a vocal music group which was previously known as the Cavemen Chorus, will perform their contest sets as they prepare for 2014 Fall Cardinal District Competition in Indianapolis on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. at Greenwood Park Church of Christ across from the mall on Campbell Lane. The concert is free. A fish fry before the concert will be held from 5-7 p.m. That meal is $10 for adults and $7.50 for those 10 and under. The food is being prepared by JD's Bakery of Bowling Green and JD's Country Milk of Russellville. One of the chorus members is Derek Guyer of Auburn, who will lead singing at the Red River Meeting House Association Annual Meeting on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 14.

Lady Cougars breeze by Todd

Adding another district win to their streak, the Logan County Lady Cougars beat Todd Central 25-9, 25-7 in volleyball Tuesday, Chanler Steenbergen had 6 kills and Brianna Wooden 5. Molly Latham fired 4 aces and handed out 13 assists. Amber Carroll recorded 12 digs and Catherine Miller 7 for Coach Steven Lyne’s team.

Exercise class to combat effects

of arthritis beings in Auburn

A free exercise class designed to help reduce pain and stiffness will begin today at 9:30 a.m. at Auburn Senior Center. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Class will be taught by Cheryl Kerchenski on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, according to Senior Center Director April Pawley.
