For the second year in a row, the Logan County School District is ranked highest among 15 surrounding districts, according to the Kentucky School Report Cards, which were released to the public at midnight Thursday.

The districts with which Logan is compared are Glasgow, Monroe County, Edmonson County, Warren County, Simpson County, Muhlenbeg County, Bowling Green, Barren County, Todd County, Allen County, Metcalfe County, Butler County, Caverna and Russellville.

“We are very proud to share that the hard work of our students and staff, and the support of our parents, community and Board of Education, has earned us the prestige of being labeled a “Distinguished” district, recognized across the Commonwealth as a state leader in academic achievement, implementation of effective and innovative instructional strategies, and meeting the needs of all students,” says new Superintendent Kevin Hub.

“Achievement gains in every one of our schools illustrate our high level of professional collaboration, competitive spirit, and strategies designed to support continuous improvement.”

Four of the five Logan middle schools are among the top five in the region with the fifth in seventh place among the 22 schools. Auburn is number one with a score of 78.7, Adairville second at 75.5, Olmstead fourth at 74.9, and Chandlers fifth at 73.1. The only other middle school to crack the top five was South Warren, which was third at 75.3.

After James E. Bazzell Middle School of Allen County finished sixth, Lewisburg was seventh at 71.4, the same as Bazzell’s score.

In state middle school standings, Auburn ranked 18th of 330 schools, Adairville 22nd, Olmstead 27th, Chandlers 54th and Lewisburg 77th.

Among elementary schools, Olmstead was ranked fourth in the region among 33 schools with a 79.4. Two Monroe County schools topped the list with Cumberland Trace of Warren County third. Glasgow’s South Green and Edmonson County’s Kyrock were fifth and sixth with Auburn seventh at 76.3. Adairville placed 14th at 72.3, Chandlers 17th at 71.1, and Lewisburg 25th at 66.6.

Olmstead is ranked 43rd of 561 elementary schools in Kentucky. Auburn is 98th.

“Four of our schools scored at or above the 95th percentile and met or exceeded each of their accountability goals, earning them the label of ‘School of Distinction.’  Those schools are Adairville Middle School, Auburn Middle School, Olmstead Middle School and Olmstead Elementary School,” Dr. Hub notes. “Chandlers Middle School and Auburn Elementary School scored above the 90th percentile and earned the label of ‘Distinguished.’  Lewisburg Middle School ranked at the 89th percentile, nearly scoring ‘Distinguished’.”

Logan County High School ranked eighth among the 17 high school in the region with a 75.1 score. Glasgow was tops at 81.8 with Warren County at 79.6. Others placing ahead of Logan were Monroe County, Todd Central, Greenwood and Metcalfe County.

“Our largest gains were at Adairville, Chandlers and Lewisburg elementary schools, and Logan County High School continues to improve its College and Career Readiness rates,” Hub said.

“While each of our schools has a unique character, based on years of culture and tradition, our school and district leaders have embraced instructional practices designed to address the individual needs of our students.”

Despite continuing its role as the top academic school district in a 10-county area, Logan still has work to do, Hub says.

“Despite achievement gains at every school, our most pressing academic issues moving forward will be maintaining the standard of excellence we’ve come to expect, continuing a focus on the needs of ALL students, and being committed to the college and career readiness of every graduate,” Hub says.

David Ward is principal at Auburn, Katina Kemplin at Adairville, Ben Kemplin at Olmstead, Caycee Spears at Chandlers, Randy Marcum at Lewisburg and Casey Jaynes at LCHS. Mike Hurt supervises assessments through the central office.
