South stays undefeated with 45-22 win over visiting Panthes
|
|
As was the case last year, the Russellville Panthers have lost their last two games of the regular season. They were beaten 45-22 by undefeated South Warren on the road Thursday. Sophomore Ryder Litten, son of former Panther Jeff Litten, ran for two touchdowns, passed for two and intercepted a pass for the Spartans. Senior Lee McMurry caught two touchdown passes for RHS, one each from Coco Darden and his brother, Jaylyn McMurry. Desmon Quarles ran for 61 yards and a touchdown in the first half, but Coach John Myers held him out the second half with a hand injury. Josh Bigbee scored a two-point conversion on a pass from Darden, but he had a touchdown called back on the return of a fumble recovery when a teammate was called for an illegal block. Bryan Cummings & Austin McElwain caught the TD passes from Litten for Coach Brandon Smith’s10-0 team, which is ranked first in Class 3A.

Logan sophomores named all-region
|
|
Sophomores Amber Carroll and Catherine Miller were named to the All-Fourth Region Volleyball Team Thursday, showing how young this 21-win Logan County team is. South Warren, which eliminated the Lady Cougars in Wednesday's semifinals, became the first team besides Logan or Greenwood to win the regional championship in 11 seasons. South beat the Lady Gators 3-1 in the finals. Lady Spartan Sarah Pemberton was named tournament MVP.

Thursday a busy night in Logan
|
|
This will be a busy Thursday evening involving Logan Countians. Concerned Citizens of Logan County is hosting a Meet the Candidates program open to the public at 6 p.m. at the KP Hall on East Fifth Street. Then the words of Edgar Allen Poe come to life as the talented Fountain Square Players from Bowling Green come to haunt the Old Logan County Courthouse with chilling retellings of the Poe's classic tales of suspense. Doors will open at 6:30 for a performance starting at 7 p.m. Additionally, the Russellville Panthers will play their final regular season game at South Warren, beginning at 7 p.m. The game will be aired on WRUS AM, both on the air and on the internet.

South ends Logan v-ball season
|
|
South Warren ended the Logan County Lady Cougars' reign as regional volleyball champions Wednesday at Warren Central. According to Coach Rob Imlay, South won 25-23, 25-20, 25-18 in the regional semifinals. Coach Steve Lyne's team finished 21-18. Candidates file as write-ins
|
|
Two men met the deadline to file as write-in candidates for office in the Nov. 4 General Election. They are Robert Coker for District 6 constable, andJason Harper for Lewisburg City Council. There are still only four candidates for the six Lewisburg seats, so some appointments will be necessary.Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes has also notified County Clerk Scottie Harper that four people have filed for the U.S. Senate seat that she and incumbent Mitch McConnell are seeking. Those write-ins are Mike Maggard, Robert Ransdell, Shawna Sterling and Gregory Welch.

Panthers to host Country Day
|
|
The Russellville Panthers, who are seeded second in Class 1A, Region I, District 1, will play host to Kentucky Country Day, which is third in District 2, Friday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. in the first round of the playoffs, Athletic Director Calvin Head has announced. Coach Matthew Jones’ Bearcats have a 5-4 record going into this week’s game at Trimble County. They lost to district opponent Louisville Holy Cross 41-21, but beat Bardstown Bethlehem the next week by the same score and won over Caverna 14-6 Friday. Coach John Myers’ Panthers are 2-1 in the district and 7-2 overall going into Thursday’s game at undefeated South Warren, which is ranked first in the state in Class 3A.

Lee Greenwood to sing in Logan today for GOP
|
|
Veteran country music entertainer Lee Greenwood is to be in Russellville this afternoon as part of the reelection campaigns of Sen. Mitch McConnell & Rep. Ed Whitfield. According to WRUS News, Greenwood will sing his classic "God Bless the USA" at 1 p.m. at H&H Sheetmetal on the Morgantown Road in Russellville.

A Meet the Candidates program will be sponsored by Concerned Citizens of Russellville/Logan County this Thursday at 6 p.m. All candidates for public office on the ballots in Logan County are invited to attend and participate, and the public is encouraged to attend. Executive Director Dorris Vick says that state representative candidates Martha Jane King & Jason Petrie are among those who have accepted the invitation. It will be held at the KP Hall on East Fifth Street in Russellville.

Stevenson plans All Harvest Gathering
without masks during day on Halloween
|
|
An All Harvest Gathering will be held at Stevenson Elementary School on Friday, Oct. 31 from 10:30-12:30 p.m. Students will attend by grade level after they have lunch. Students may dress up for this event, but costumes cannot be scary, violent, or bloody (no masks or face paint). Students will "harvest our bounty" by collecting treats on the front lawn. Parent donations of wrapped candy or small trinkets are appreciated!

Services set for Captain Don Kenady
|
|
Don Kenady, 81, who invented reed switches which have been used in automobiles for decades, died this weekend at his Woodburn home. The award-winning design engineer at General Electric was the son of the late businessman Harold Kenady and Lillian Kenady of Russellville. He was the brother of former Logan County magistrate Kerry Kenady, who survives. An Air Force veteran, Captain Kenady is also survived by his wife, Martine Mayberry Kenady. Among their six children who survive is Kevin Kenady, a former Russellville High School math teacher who is dean of math and science at Southcentral Kentucky Community & Technical College. Funeral services will be held at J.C. Kirby & Son, Lovers Lane chapel in Bowling Green Tuesday at 2 p.m. Visitation will be held today from 6-8 p.m.

Mayfield holds off Panthers 16-8
|
|
Coming ever so close but still falling, the Russellville Panthers came up a little short against visiting Mayfield Friday. The two-time defending state champions escaped Rhea Stadium 16-8 for the Class A Region I, District 1 top seed. Coach John Myers’ Panthers led 8-3 at halftime on a Johnny Drumgole touchdown. Coach Joe Morris’ Cardinals scored the winning touchdown after recovering a fumble on the Panther 26. The Panthers put together a great drive late in the game with quarterback throwing what should have been touchdown passes on third and fourth downs, but the receivers didn’t pull them in. Mayfield improved to 8-1. Russellville’s record is 7-2 going into Thursday’s regular season finale at South Warren, the top-ranked team in their class.

Panther stars of decades long ago honorary captains at Rhea
|
|
Men who played key roles for the Russellville Panthers in some of the greatest games in Rhea Stadium history at least 60 years ago will serve as honorary captains for Friday’s crucial district showdown with state implications. Coach John Myers’Panthers entertain defending state champion Mayfield for the right to host the regional semifinals if they meet again in the playoffs, as expected. As part of the celebration of 75 years of Rhea Stadium, the honorary captains will include Harold ‘Tub’ Hinton, Huey Hinton, James Holman, Bob Ballance, Dr. Pat Kirkpatrick and Alderson Clark. Logan girls fall in soccer region 4-1
|

A super season came to end for the Logan County Lady Cougars Tuesday in a 4-1 loss to Bowling Green in the second round of the regional soccer tournament. Breanna Baptiste score the lone Logan goal on an assist from Emma Cartas. Also playing were Brittney Barton, Sara Bills, Madison Bruner, Lauren Burnett, Kelsey Coleman, Rachel Cunnningham, Meagan Ferguson, Holly Foster, Rebecca McElfresh, Courtney McGinnis, Desirae Powell, Hanna Shelton, Kathryn Smith and Logan Williamson. Coach Dan Duncan’s district champions finished with a 14-6 record, outscoring their 20 opponents 94-30.

Logan favored to win 12th straight v-ball district title
|
|
The Logan County lady Cougars seek their 87th and 88th straight district wins—along with their 12th straight district championship—as the 13th District Volleyball Tournament is played at Russellville’s Jim Young Gymnasium Tuesday. Tournament Manager Calvin Head says all three matches will be played that day. Coach Steven Lyne’s Lady Cougars (17-16) are 6-0 in the district and will play host Russellville (0-10) at 5 p.m. Deborah Elliott is the Lady Panthers coach. After that match, Franklin-Simpson (11-11, 4-2) will play Todd Central (8-15, 2-4). The winners are expected to meet in the finals at approximately 8 p.m.

Lady Cougars win 3rd straight district soccer title
|
|
The Logan County Lady Cougars beat Todd Central 4-2 at Franklin Thursday in the finals of the 13thDistrict Tournament to win the championship. Coach Dan Duncan’s team had already qualified for region by going undefeated in the three-team district. It was only the second match this October for LCHS, which completed a 14-5 season by beating South Warren (12-7) 3-1 on Oct. 4. Breanna Baptiste scored all three goals in that one with Emma Cartas getting two assists and Logan Williamson the other. Lauren Burnett is the goalkeeper. This was the third straight district championship for the Lady Cougars. They have a 33-17-2 record overall during that time with a 14-1-1 district record under Duncan and his predecessor, Coach Daniel McCarley.

Cougars take lead, contend late, but fall at Barren County
|
|
After playing their best three quarters in a game this season, the Logan County Cougars fell 35-12 at Barren County Friday in a game carried over WRUS. With 5:02 left in the first quarter, Coach Steve Duncan'sCougars earned their first lead of the season on a 9-minute drive that ended with Joseph Olliges' 5-yard run. The Trojans scored the next three touchdowns, but the Cougars cut the lead to 21-12 on a pass from Olliges to Cole Stanley.

Wilcutt, Finney to be honored at Aviation Heritage Park
|
|
Two Logan County natives will be honored during a ceremony at the Aviation Heritage Park in Warren County. Col. Terry Wilcutt served as a NASA pilot before becoming a commander of NASA missions. Commander David Finney, an Auburn native and a graduate of the U,S, Naval Academy, became engineering manager of the Johnson Space Center in Houston. He retired from NASA in 2008 and died in 2010. His widow, Jill Finney, will represent him at the ceremony. One of those participating will be NASA Administrative General Charles Bolden.

Dr. Janet Hurt joining Russellville
Schools as assistant superintendent

A familiar name in local education administration is joining the leadership team of Russellville Independent Schools at the upper echelon. Superintendent Leon Smith has announced that Dr. Janet Hurt has agreed to serve as interim assistant superintendent, beginning in November following the Oct. 31 retirement of Susan McCloud. Dr. Hurt is a former associate superintendent of Logan County Schools and principal at Adairville Elementary School. She is considered one of Kentucky’s foremost experts on improving student performances on standardized tests. See The LoJo for more information in a future article.

Former Potter Home superintendent Barclay Riley dies
|
|
Barclay Riley of Russellville, who worked with orphans’ homes in Kentucky and Tennessee for almost half a century, died at his home Wednesday morning. He resigned his position as minister of Crittenden Drive Church of Christ in the early 1960s to become superintendent of Potter Children’s Home in Bowling Green for 25 years. After that he worked with Tennessee Children’s Home for 20 years. Among congregations he served was Adairville Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, sons Steve, Joe and Dr. Tom Riley, daughters Mary Linda Moore (of Olmstead) and Sara Louise Boyd; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Crittenden Drive Saturday at 11 a.m. with Charles Roney, Tom Riley, Andy Walker and Frank Dockins Jr. officiating.

LCHS to study interest in
fielding high school bowling

From Athletic Director Hugh McReynolds: “As part of the school’s on-going efforts to remain in compliance with Title IX guidelines as set forth by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, the Logan County High School Athletic Department will conduct a meeting to gage the level of interest among students for the creation of a high school bowling team which would begin no sooner than the 2015-2016 school year. This is a follow-up requirement from student surveys that were conducted during the spring of 2014 which showed some interest in the sport activity of bowling.
This meeting will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. in Room 400 for students currently in grades 8 -11. During this meeting, the school’s administration will outline steps that have to be taken for this sport activity to be added to the list of sports presently offered at the school. In addition, the requirements for participation will be discussed as well as the time commitment involved.”

District soccer starts Monday
|
|
District soccer tournaments will begin today in Franklin, although Logan County’s teams don’t play until later in the week. Coach Jonathan White’s Russellville Panthers (1-13) meet Franklin-Simpson (13-5) at 7:30 p.m. , following the Todd Central- (3-12) vs. Franklin (3-16) girls match. Coach Eric Evans’ Logan County Cougars (8-10) and Todd Central Rebels (8-6) play Tuesday’s only match at 6 p.m. Coach Dan Duncan’s Lady Cougars (13-5) are the top seed in the girls division and don’t have to play a semifinal match, since Russellville does not have a girls team. On Thursday, the Lady Cougars will meet the F-S vs. Todd winner in the girls final at 6 p.m. The boys final will follow about 7:30.

Festival Events still on today

DeeDee Reed of Logan County Tourism reports this morning that the Jesse James Robbery Reenactment at 9:30 a.m. and the Logan County Tobacco & Heritage Festival Parade at 10:30 are still expected to happen. She says that music events on Carrico Park Square will be moved into the Historic Old Logan County Historic Courthouse if weather warrants the move.
