Each month the Logan County Board of Education hears/sees a presentation about activities at the various schools and gets Good News Reports from the schools. They learned the following at the November meeting:
DISTRICT:
? Jason Givens was elected Fourth Region Director of the Kentucky School Plant Management Association. He will serve in this office for a two year term. Congratulations Jason!
? On Oct. 15, the USDA conducted a review of the Commodity Food Program at the Central Office and at Olmstead School. Food Service Director Jamye Stokes was notified by the KY Department of Agriculture that no discrepancies were identified at either site.
? In the last six weeks all school cafeterias, with the exception of Adairville, received a 100 percent rating on their health department inspections. Adairville received a 99 percent rating. The problem cited was very minor and was quickly corrected by the cafeteria staff.
? This month the Russellville Rotary Club, through its Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet and Operation Warm programs, provided over 300 pairs of shoes and 200 winter coats for Preschool through twelfth grade students in Logan County.
? Rotary also delivered a dictionary to every third grader in Logan County Schools.
ADAIRVILLE:
? Congratulations to the following students for being selected for the Superintendent Teen Task Force: Olivia Bouldin, Hannah Crutchfield, Austin Epley, Brittany Garrett, Bennie Guzman, John Hendricks, Katie Ray Holloman, and Anna Shoulders.
? Our school has begun “Sharpen the Saw Fridays” as a part of our Leader in Me initiative. During this time, teachers and staff members – from our nurse and classroom aides to our custodian - are “sharpening the saw” with small groups of students who share common interests. Groups are participating in activities such as quilting, scrapbooking, monologue, string art, basketball, hiking, Lego building, drama, community service, baton twirling, and so much more!
? Congratulations to our eighth grade class who took the Explore test in September and earned the highest scores in our district on the English and Reading portions of the test, second highest scores on the Math and Science portions of the test, and the 2nd highest overall composite score in Logan County.
AUBURN:
? Auburn’s 8th grade students participated in the Reality Store event on Oct. 21. Students were given an opportunity to learn how to budget living expenses.
? Mighty Molar provided free periodontal cleanings to K-8 students on October 22-23.
? The Power Team visited Auburn’s 5-8 grade students on Nov. 6 to encourage the students to strive and be the best, academically and personally.
? Auburn’s Beta Club sponsored a Talent Show on Nov. 7. Many talented students from K-8 performed for family, friends and the community.
? Artwork created by Auburn seventh grade student Olivia Brown was selected for the “VSA Kentucky 2015 Student Traveling Exhibit”. The exhibit was on display at the Galt House in Louisville on November 23 – 25, 2014 and will be at the Capitol Plaza Tower in Frankfort during Youth Art Month in March 2015.
CHANDLERS:
? Approximately 350 parents/guardians took part in student-led conferences on the afternoon of Oct. 16.
? Fifty-one eighth graders participated in a job shadowing day on Oct. 22, coordinated and organized by a group of middle school students.
LEWISBURG:
? Cher Rosser, Lewisburg Math Intervention Teacher, was recognized by Northern Kentucky University and Kentucky Center for Mathematics on Monday, Oct. 27. Recognized as a ‘Trailblazer for Mathematics Education’, Mrs. Rosser was honored at a reception in Bowling Green for her diligence and efforts in assisting students with math content success.
OLMSTEAD:
? Eighth grade students participated in a field trip to Murray State University and Land Between the Lakes (LBL) in October. Students moved through three sessions at MSU (poetry writing with award winning writer Constance Alexander and mock simulations with the occupational safety and hazard department), met with the president of the university, and then toured the campus. At LBL, they worked on building leadership skills and learned about early American history and t conservation.
? On Nov. 11, Olmstead held a Veterans Day program. Four WWII veterans and a Vietnam veteran visited with students before the program. Student representatives from every grade level presented parts of the program. Veterans and currently serving military were recognized during the program. Also, students with family members serving in one of the branches of service were recognized. Veteran James Terry Stinson, from Owensboro, was the keynote speaker.
LCHS:
? The LCHS Cougar Band placed fifteenth in Class AAAA in the KMEA State Competition. Congratulations to the LCHS Cougar Band!
? LCHS Band Director David Dayton has been chosen as the Third District Band Director High School Teacher of the Year! David’s name will be submitted to KMEA so he can compete with other districts for the overall state award. Congratulations Mr. Dayton!
? Boys Varsity Cross Country placed 2nd at the 5th Annual Meet of Champions held at LCHS on October 25th. The following student athletes have qualified to compete in State Cross Country in Lexington: Levi Crossley, Thomas Lyne and Meredith Johnson.
? Abbi Lillard’s Multimedia students, Savanah Rogers, Tori Mills, & Price Brown recently shot a video for Logan County Tourism. The videos were submitted to the regional tourism board where they will be pieced together with others in the region to create a video that will be shown daily at Mammoth Cave National Park. They will now, along with other multimedia students, be working on a video for Logan County Tourism that will be shown around the state to promote travel to this area.
? A special thanks to LCHS students Karyn Kutzman and Lydia Manley who performed in the BGonStage Lead the Way Talent Show in Bowling Green on October 14 at the Brickyard Café. This was to recognize the area talent and promote the Leader in Me Program in schools.
? Congratulations to sophomores Bethany Pearson and Coby Foster. They were September’s Attendance for Academic Success Contest Winners. Each student received a $15 gift certificate for Subway and an Academic Success medallion.
? Girls Soccer finished the season 14-6. They were undefeated in district play and won the district tournament for the third straight year. The Lady Cougars were tied for 7th in the state in goals per game and 12th in the state in scoring margin. Bre Baptiste and Emma Cartas were selected to the All-Region Tournament Team. All-Region Regular Season Team members include Baptiste, Cartas and Lauren Burnett.
? On Oct. 24, the LCHS BETA Club competed with other 3rd District BETA Clubs at Hillvue Heights in Bowling Green. The following students placed in their category: Rachel Barnett, Kira Binkley, Rachel Cunningham, Hope Dodson, Kaitlyn Foster, Karina Holloman, Korbin Holloman, Cierra Johnson, Tori Mills, Sierra Morrow, Savannah Rogers, Kellie Warden, Audrey Wells and Logan Williamson.
LCAS:
? On Nov. 6, Dr. Hub visited the Logan County Alternative School and spoke to the students about the skills they would need for getting and keeping a job.
RATC:
? Dr. Kevin Hub, superintendent of Logan County Schools, announced plans to build a new Area Technology Center (ATC) to meet the needs of future students. Potential partnerships with Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC), as well as local business and industry, will provide high-tech, quality training and impact the future of the Logan County workforce.
