Good News for Logan County schools in December

Each month the Logan County Board of Education hears/sees a presentation about activities at the various schools and gets Good News Reports from the schools. They learned the following at the December meeting:

 

Adairville:

All-District Band Auditions were held at Warren Central High School in Bowling Green, and the following students qualified for All-District Band: Hannah Crutchfield, Austin Epley, Riley Hobbs, & Grace Richardson. Congratulations to these students!

The Adairville Beta Club sponsored a school-wide collection of pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Eighty-nine pounds were collected by the Adairville student body!

 

Some of the Adairville School members of our county-wide GLEE choir sang for the Veterans Day observance at Russellville's Square. They were Aly Dotson, Bailey Howell, & Sydnee Jones. We are so proud of these ladies!

Auburn:

The Auburn Middle School's theatre enrichment class presented "Willy Wonky and the Chocolate Factory" on Dec. 9 to almost 200 in attendance.

Eighth grader Karrah Cron was selected to play for the Audubon Volleyball Association’s (AVA) 15-U National Team. AVA, based out of Owensboro, is one of the top 8 volleyball clubs in Kentucky. She will travel with her team throughout the South and will finish the season playing at Disney World next summer.

The KY Youth Assembly (KYA) at Auburn collected a total of 1,114 items of food for the FRYSC as part of their service project for KYA.

Auburn's KYA attended the annual convention in Frankfort on December 4- 6. The group received the "Outstanding Bill" award and presented the proposed bill on the floor of the KY House of Representatives on Dec. 5.

Auburn reading interventionist Holli Waltrip was featured on the Read-to-Achieve webcast speaking about the Family Reading Night event conducted in conjunction with our Wellness Committee. The night was called the "Family Fit and Fun Night" and was conducted on Sept. 9.

The Auburn Academic Team participated in the 6th Grade Showcase competition on Dec. 6. The following placed in the competition: Henry Ham – 2nd place Arts and Humanities

 and3rd place Social Studies; Zach Yates – 6th place Math; Lindsey Brinkley – 5th place Composition; Kellie Proctor – 2nd place Composition

Auburn celebrated the Poppy Leadership Award on Dec. 10. The following student-led activities were conducted for Poppy: band performance, students speaking on leadership from K to 8th grade, dance off with Poppy, cheerleading performance and a half-court basketball shoot off with Poppy. Chandlers:

Several student groups have organized the following donation campaigns to help those in need this holiday season:

Forty-seven filled shoe boxes were donated to Operation Christmas Child.

Over 450 canned food items were given to families in need.

Students and families donated over 200 items of clothing to Barren River Area Safe Space (BRASS).

 

Lewisburg:

On Oct. 9, the Lewisburg Beta Club was named a National Beta School of Distinction. They received a banner to display and a recognition letter that reads, “This national award speaks highly of your commitment to academic rigor and illustrates your dedication to preparing students for college and career readiness.” The National Beta School of Distinction award was created to recognize those schools that demonstrate an increase in membership. The club currently has 47 members and has been busy since August with service projects, fundraising and preparing for the State Beta Convention in February.

On Tuesday night, Dec. 8, Lewisburg School held its first annual ‘Cookies with Santa’ Family Reading and Math night. Over 180 parents, students and staff members enjoyed an evening of reading and math activities, and even Santa Claus made an appearance. Door prizes of books and math games were given away, and all families left the evening with their own personal copy of ‘The Gingerbread Man’ for their home library.

Olmstead:

On Monday, Nov. 17, the primary classes at Olmstead School had a Math and Reading Family night. All kindergarten through third-grade families were invited to share in a night of learning and fun. Thirty-three parents spent 30 minutes in their child's classroom learning math and reading strategies their children were learning, as well as ways to help at home. Students enjoyed playing Math and Reading games while their parents were busy learning. Many of Olmstead's Beta students helped make this evening a success.

The 6th Grade Academic Team competed in 6th Grade Showcase at University Heights Academy on Dec. 6. They place 3rd in Quick Recall and 2nd Overall. Individual winners were as follows: Price Violette - 1st place Arts & Humanities; Andrew Lyne - 1st place Mathematics; Blake Wood - 3rd place Language Arts; Emily Oliver - 3rd place Writing Composition & 3rd place Science; Harley Robertson - 4th place Mathematics & 4th place Writing Composition

Archery Winter Warmup Competition was held at Olmstead School on Dec. 6 with the following results:

Olmstead Elementary Team shot a 2867 for 1st Place

Olmstead Middle School Team shot a 3174 for 1st Place

Twenty-two shooters won individual medals

As a school, Olmstead raised $4,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation during “Diabetes Awareness Month” in October.

LCHS:

The following students were selected by audition over the past two weekends for the KMEA 3rd District All-District Band. The KMEA 3rd District includes most of south-central Kentucky, encompassing counties from Christian to Cumberland, including twenty high schools. These students have worked very hard and have gone above and beyond their normal classroom expectations. If you see them in the halls, in your classrooms, or out and about, please congratulate the following student:

9th Graders: Angus Moore – Euphonium – 1st Chair; Samuel Noe – Tenor Saxophone – 3rd Chair; Brayden Yates – French Horn – 1st Alternate; Dylan Coonts – Percussion 1st Alternate

10th Graders: Sara Wright – Contrabass Clarinet – 1st Chair; Zoe Beasley – Alto Saxophone – 1st Chair; Jack Mills – Trombone – 2nd Chair; Lauren Batten – Flute – 5th Chair; Victoria Welsh – Clarinet – 11th Chair

12th Graders: Caleb Williams – Trombone – 1st Chair; Zach Skotak – French Horn – 3rd Chair; Emily Crutchfield – Clarinet – 14th Chair; Molly Bell – Oboe – 2nd Alternate

The following students were selected to audition for the KMEA All-State Band in December – we want to wish them luck as they prepare to audition against the top students in the state! Lauren Batten – flute; Zoe Beasley – alto saxophone; Molly Bell – alto saxophone; Angus Moore – euphonium; Caleb Williams – trombone; Zach Skotak – French horn

Caleb Williams was selected for the KMEA All-State Band. This is the first time in many years that Logan County High School has had a student selected to be part of this group! In February, Caleb will spend four days, in Louisville rehearsing and performing with the top high school musicians in the state.

LCHS Cheerleaders placed 9th in the Super Large division at the state KHSAA cheer competition.

RATC:

Pre-Nursing Program: Certified Nursing Assistant Certification: Adriana Hinojoza, Becca Engler, and Reagan Thomaston

 

LCAS:

One student should complete the program by Christmas break. We are excited to welcome Mr. Toby Turpin to the Alternative School; he will be the interim principal after Christmas Break.
