An entertaining high school basketball game ended on an explosive dunk by Lee McMurry and a Panther victory as Coach Phil Todd's Russellville team won its sixth straight game Friday, knocking off South Warren 70-60 to cap off RHS' homecoming and a highly successful Green Out night honoring lymphoma patient Dillon Porter. 17-10 before the Panthers went on a 13-2 run. Ricky Bellamy put the Panthers up 25-22, but Dayton Gumm's 3-pointer with 0:07 sent the game into a halftime tie. McMurry scored all 14 of his points in the second half and CoCo Darden made some huge plays in the third quarter to make it seem the home team was going to win with ease, but South kept coming back. Darden scored, drew a charge and then threw an assist to Pedro Bradshaw in one stretch. Jason Mitchell hit a pair of shots late on the way to 17 points, and then McMurry put the exclamation point on the win on an assist from Micah Naylor. Darden also had 14 points and Bradshaw 11. For South, Gumm scored 20, Michael Hicks 18 and Brandon Stacker 14.

RHS girls game canceled Tuesday but boys will play pair
|
|
Russellville will play a boys junior varsity/varsity doubleheader against visiting Springfield Tuesday night. It had been scheduled as a girls/boys matchup, but Athletic Director Calvin Head says the game for the Lady Panthers he coaches was canceled because of sickness at the Tennessee school. The varsity game will feature the two most successful coaches in the 4th region in this century, RHS' Phil Todd and Springfield's Tim Riley, formerly of Warren Central. Head says this will still be a Pink Out in a battle against breast cancer, beginning at 6 p.m.

Chili supper football fundraiser offered before RHS games Tuesday
|
|
The Russellville High School Football team will host its annual Chili Supper on Feb. 3 in the RHS Cafeteria. This will also be Basketball Senior Night recognition as the Lady Panthers and Panthers host 13th District Rival Franklin-Simpson. Doors will open at 5:30 and serving will end around 7 p.m. The meal will consist of chili, hot dogs, desserts, and drinks. Donations will be accepted at the door. This year Modern Woodmen of America will match all funds received at the supper up to $2,500. Athletic Director Calvin Head says, “We would like to extend a huge thank you to Mr. Donald Bibb, Modern Woodmen representative, and all of his staff on their continuous support of our athletic programs and RHS Football.”

Logan teams sweep Franklin
|
|
Logan County’s teams continued their winning ways Friday and took big steps toward playing the number four seed in the district tournament. In fact,Coach Finley Baird’s Lady Cougars clinched the number one seed with a 59-45 win at Franklin-Simpson. Logan is 5-0 in district games that count toward seeding, and the Lady Cougars have only a game with Russellville remaining.Coach Lonnie Mason’s Cougars ran their district record to 5-0 as well, but they need a win over Russellville Feb. 6 to guarantee their second straight top seed. The Cougars romped at F-S 75-54 Friday. The Cougars have won seven straight games while the Lady Cougars have won 10 of their last 11 outings. Pardue, Kenwood get district win over Riley, Springfield
|
|
In a Tennessee Class AAA district encounter involving coaches with extensive local ties, Coach Dennis Pardue’s Kenwood Knights beat Coach Tim Riley’s Springfield Yellowjackets 67-58 Tuesday at Springfield. Kenwood was led by Matthew Norl, brother of Daniel Norl, who is playing for Eastern Kentucky. Matthew had 14 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists. Tyree Boykin, son of Terry Boykin, who was the point guard when Russellville’s Bubba Wells was starring for Austin Peay, had 16 points and 5 rebounds. Springfield was led by Dalano Walker with 11 points. Kenwood, which won the First Southern National Bank Christmas Classic in December, is now 13-7 overall and tied for first place in the district with a 6-3 record. Springfield, which finished fifth in the FSNB, is 11-10/4-5 and tied for fourth in the district.

|
|
The Logan County Lady Cougars led all the way in a 67-53 win over visiting Edmonson County Tuesday night despite dealing with several injuries. Maegann Hardison scored 16 points, including 6 of 6 from the free throw line. She had 3 each of assists and steals. Despite an injured wrist, Brooke Barnes had 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Torrie Pollard scored 11 points and added 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Taleia Masonhad an off-night scoring but had 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and 2 deflections. Rachel Barnett scored 8 points on 4 of 5 shooting and pulled down 7 boards. Kapreshia Powell scored 9 points. Two girls did most of the scoring for Coach Ted Hill’s Lady Cats with freshman Citlin Simon scoring 19 and seniorBrandi Lindsey 17. Coach Finley Baird’s Lady Cougars improved their record to 12-6.

P.J. Jones named to Kentucky Softball Hall of Fame
|
|
Former Russellville baseball standout P.J. Jones was notified Monday that he has been named to the Kentucky Softball Hall of Fame. He will be inducted in Lexington in October. After helping lead Coach Lou Kendall’s 1988 Panthers to the regional baseball finals, he played four years for legendary Coach Woody Hunt at Cumberland University. In 1992 he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and played professionally in their organization. Following baseball, he played softball professionally for 11 years, including in the super majors in California. He and his family now live in Bowling Green.

The Dream of Dr. King to be remembered at KP Hall Monday

“Remembering the Dream” will be the theme of a Dr. Martin Luther King Day observance at the KP Hall on East Fifth Street in Russellville, beginning at 10 a.m. Monday. Local historian Michael Morrow will speak and Karen White will present a film on Dr. King’s legacy. The public is invited and refreshments will be served. Lady Cougars keep winning

The Logan County Lady Cougars won their eighth game in nine starts Saturday night, beating visiting Clarksville Northeast 59-48. Maegann Hardison & Kapreshia Powell totaled 16/10 and 14/7 points/rebounds, respectively. Torrie Pollard hit 6 free throws on the way to 8 points and had 6 deflections, 5 steals, and 4 each of rebounds & assists. Brooke Barnes totaled 8 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Taleia Mason totaled 7 each of points & deflections, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Cierra Johnson was second in rebounding with 9 to go along with 4 deflections. The Lady Cougars hit only a fourth of their shots but pulled down 46 rebounds.

Panthers get district win at F-S

Senior Lee McMurry had 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Russellville Panthers to a 60-52 district win at Franklin-Simpson Friday. One of his biggest plays was a long pass for an assist to Pedro Bradshaw to make the lead 58-46 for Coach Phil Todd’s team, much like the one he had gotten to Bradshaw for the game-winner three nights earlier against Greenwood. Bradshaw finished with 10 points, as didJason Mitchell, who was the beneficiary of one those long assists from CoCo Darden a few seconds earlier. Darden added 9 points. Micah Naylor hit some big free throws on the way to six points.Carlesso Doaks & Tony Lockhart each scored 15 points for Coach Dee Spencer’s 5-13 Wildcats. The Panthers improved to 7-9.

The magic number for Brooke Barnes was 11 while leading the Logan County Lady Cougars to an 80-64 win over University Heights Academy. The junior center hit 11 of 15 field goal attempts on the way to 25 points and she pulled down 11 of her 16 rebounds on the defensive end. Kapreshia Powell was also had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds along with 2 each of assists, steals and deflections. Bradshaw beats buzzer & Greenwood
|
|
Pedro Bradshaw sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer Tuesday, giving the Russellville Panthers a 68-67 win at Greenwood. Bradshaw got the ball on a pass from Lee McMurry, who had rebounded a missed Gator free throw. Bradsahw finished with 21 points while CoCo Darden & Jason Mitchell each added 13. Darden scored 11 of his points in the second half. Five of them came in a row to tie the score at 46-46 late in the third quarter, and then he hit a shot with 5.2 seconds remaining in the game to make Bradshaw's game winner a possibility. Coach Phil Todd's Panthers were coming off an 81-59 win over Ohio County.

EPB to raise video fees

The Russellville Electric Plant Board has announced a price increase for the company’s video services. Effective Feb. 1, the average customer’s video bill will increase by $6.60. The price adjustments are driven, for the most part, by a 339 percent increase in local programming fees. EPB is providing bill inserts to video customers to discuss and explain the reasoning behind the price increase.

The Logan Journal has recorded several milestones recently. In its sixth calendar year online, The LoJo averaged over a million ‘hits’ per month for a total of 12.9 million, an average of about 34,000 per day for the entire year 2014. The first 10 days of 2015 saw that average grow to 63,300 hits per days. The number of Facebook users who have asked to be notified when a new story goes on The LoJo has ballooned to 3,134. Russellville sophomore Loreal Cheaney ranks third in theDaily News area in scoring (18.3), 4th in rebounding (8.5) and 5th in free throw shooting (74.7). In a 70-58 loss to Hopkins County Central Monday, she had 25 points and 15 rebounds. The two girls ahead of her in scoring, Allen County Scottsville’s Morgan Rich and Glasgow’sBree Glover, are considered two of the best college prospects in the state. Logan County players who are ranked includeTorrie Pollard (2nd in steals, 4th assists),Brooke Barnes (3rd in rebounding),Taleia Mason (3rd in steals, 9th in assists), and Kapreshia Powell (9th in steals). Logan County’s basketball teams continued their winning ways Friday by sweeping a district doubleheader at Todd Central. Both remained undefeated in district games that count on seeding. Coach Finley Woodard’s Lady Cougars won their seventh straight game, beating the Lady Rebels 67-44 after leading 36-10 at the half. Maegann Hardison scored 19 points, Kapreshia Powell 12, Brooke Barnes 9, and Torrie Pollard & Taleia Mason 8 each in the win. The Cougars jumped out to a 12-0 lead, propelled by three quick steals by Tucker Baldwin on the way to a 58-40 win. Ben Wrighttotaled 16 points and 8 rebounds forCoach Lonnie Mason’s Cougars whileTahmir Graham had 12 points, 7 boards, and 4 assists. Noah Whittinghill added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

After leading by only two points at halftime, the Logan County Cougars took the third quarter 21-9 and beat visiting Butler County 65-54 Tuesday.Taylor Blakemore & Tahmir Grahameach scored 16 points while Ben Wright had 15 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocked shots. Noah Whittinghillhad a solid stat line with 8 assists and 6 each of points and rebounds. Blakemore hit 9 of 12 shots, Wright 6 of 8 and Graham 8 of 14, but the rest of the team went 5 of 28. Zach Burden led the Bears with 19 points.

Maegann Hardison hit a trio of 3-pointers on the way to 12 points. Taleia Mason had 6 assists, Torrie Pollard 6 blocked shots, and Rachel Barnett 3 each of steals and blocked shots. Kapreshia Powell, Emily Jones, Jessica Hines, Cierra Johnson & Ann Meguiar Bouldin joined them in scoring.
