Logan County High School athletic director Hugh McReynolds will retire at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. During his 23-year career as athletic director, he has served on several state and national associations, and currently serves as past president of the KY High School Athletic Directors Association (KHSADA). He has been on the association’s board of directors for 15 years and has been a finalist for Athletic Director of the Year twice.
He has been active in the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators’ Association for 21 years and has served as chairman of its Sports Turf Committee since 2008. He’s a national faculty member of the NIAAA Leadership Academy. He was the NIAAA-State Award of Merit winner from Kentucky (2007).
The graduate of Lewisburg High School and Western Kentucky University said, “I have worked long and hard to ensure opportunities and benefits for students to explore and expand their interests in interscholastic athletics. Athletics at the high school level should be educationally based for it is simply another classroom where students can learn valuable lessons that will go with them throughout life.”
McReynolds says his proudest moments as athletic director involve increased opportunities for students. “During my career at Logan County High School, we have more than doubled the number of opportunities for students from 20 teams in seven sports in 1992 to 47 teams in 14 sports currently. In 1992, we had 219 student-athletes. This year, we had 639 student-athletes in addition to 135 athletes in the five middle school.”
McReynolds also takes great pride in LCHS’ being a leader in treating male and female athletes equally. “Logan County High School is considered one of the top schools in the Commonwealth regarding compliance with KHSAA’s Title IX and Gender Equity efforts,” he says.
McReynolds became the first non-administrator athletic director when Bob Nylin succeeded Bob Birdwhistell as principal. Those three men have been the only AD's in the 33-year history of Logan County High School.
In his career, McReynolds has been district tournament manager 17 times combined in softball, basketball, volleyball and baseball. He’s also been regional manager six times combined in softball, volleyball and archery.
McReynolds’ earliest association with Cougar sports was as the trainer. He says he takes pride in the large number of LCHS graduates who are now involved in athletic training, physical therapy, coaching, sports management and facilities management. McReynolds was also officially an assistant coach in football during part of his tenure.
“I would like to personally thank Mr. Hugh McReynolds for his years of service to Logan County High School and Logan County Athletics,” said LCHS principal Casey Jaynes. “Hugh has spent countless hours ensuring safety of playing and practice fields, ensuring Title IX compliance and making sure our student athletes have the best opportunities in the classroom and on the field of competition.
“From taping ankles on Friday night for football to representing LCHS on regional, state and national committees, Hugh McReynolds has given much and asked for little in return during his tenure at LCHS.”
