Daymar offering Story Hour Friday

Daymar College is holding a Story Hour this Friday, May 1, beginning at 4 p.m. at its Russellville campus. The event is open to the public and free. There will be stories, prizes and fun. Daymar is located at 206 Sam Walton Way between Wal-Mart and Mighty Dollar.

Famed chorus, local singers to perform,

honor Ruth Morriss tonight at deGraffenried

The Cavemen Chorus (now known as The Spirit of the Commonwealth) will be singing tonight at Russellville High School's deGraffenried Auditorium starting at 7. Preceding their music, music shared by Polyvocae, the RHS production of Mary Poppins, and the LCHS Festival Choir. The Russellville Arts Council will also recognize Russellville High School graduate, the late Ruth Morriss, who was a great music educator across the country as well as arranger and musical director for the outdoor pageant Shakertown Revisited. Students will be admitted FREE and adult admission is only $5 at the door.

Jim Devasher dies from head injuries

suffered in West Virginia car crash

Former Southcentral Drug Task Force director Jim Devasher died Monday night in Huntington, W.Va., from head injuries suffered in a single-vehicle accident on Friday. A retired state police detective, he has been working as a private investigator and was returning home from a week of work and may have gone to sleep while driving, says one of his sons Chip. He has lived in Lexington in recent years. Jim Devasher has been active in many Christian ministries, often working with his close friend Mike Humble of Agape.

Stevenson Night offered by RHS softball

Tuesday vs. Todd Central Lady Rebels

From Russellville Athletic Director Calvin Head: "The RHS Athletic Department will have "Stevenson Night" Tuesday at the Lady Panther Softball game. We would like to invite all Stevenson Elementary students to attend the softball game FREE of Charge. All students must be accompanied by an adult. The free admission is only for the students. The game will start at 5:30 with our varsity team playing first and our JV team following. The Lady Panthers are scheduled to take on 13th District rival, Todd County. Our Lady Panthers are having a great season so far and this game will be one of the biggest of the year!

Will McKenzie leading conference golf tournament

Logan County High School graduate Will McKenzie is the 36-hole leader of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Golf Championship. It is a 54-hole event held at Liberty Country Club in Liberty, Ind. The Brescia University golfer takes a three-shot lead heading into Saturday's final round.

Peter Pan Jr. to be performed multiple

times at Crossroads this weekend

Logan County Middle Schools Students will present “Peter Pan Jr.” this weekend. A talented cast and crew of over 80 local students will take the audience on an adventure with pirates, mermaids, fairies and much more. Come to Neverland with Peter and the Lost Boys and of the Darling family as they battle Captain Hook and meet up with the Indians. It's a wonderful family show for all ages. Show times are Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2:30 and 6, and Sunday at 2:30. It will be performed at Crossroads Church. Tickets are just $5!

RHS, LCHS move to smaller swim

region in new KHSAA alignment

The KHSAA Board of Control has approved a new regional alignment for swimming across the state. The new alignment expands the number of swim regions across the state from five regions to nine regions. As a result, the number of schools in each region is reduced. Under the current alignment, Russellville and Logan County were among 41 schools in Region 1. Under the new alignment----in place through the 2018-2019 school year---they will swim in Region 2, now composed of 17 teams. They will be in a region with Allen County-Scottsville, Apollo, Barren County, Bowling Green, Butler County, Daviess County, Franklin-Simpson, Glasgow, Greenwood, Muhlenberg County, Ohio County, Owensboro, Owensboro Catholic, South Warren, and Warren Central.

Cougars to host South today

Following their third straight shutout win Tuesday, the Logan County Cougars will entertain South Warren at home today in a game postponed from Monday. The varsity game should begin about 6:30 p.m. Coach Ethan Meguair's Cougars and South are tied for the third most wins in the region at 12 each. Hunter Britt threw a no-hitter against Todd Central Monday. Softball Clash today at Logan

The Russellville Lady Panthers travel across town this afternoon to play at Logan County in the second Clash of the Cats of the season. Coach Brandy Trimble's Lady Panthers won their first meeting 3-2 on March 24, but after a fast start the RHS girls have lost four straight games. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:30.

Hornets knock Chattanooga from unbeaten

ranks in home opener Saturday

Teraes Clemmons put together a 3-point play with 17.5 seconds remaining in regulation Saturday to give the Bowling Green Hornets a 94-91 lead over undefeated Chattanooga Saturday at Logan County High School, and teammate Torrez Hampton pulled down a huge defensive rebound with 2 seconds left for what should have preserved the victory. But Damarius Smith missed two free throws, and Railsplitters' star Jonathan Adams fired a 25-footer that went in, went down and came out. Coach Nathan Thompson's team got its second win of the season while Chattanooga suffered its first loss. Kelly Russell Classic underway

The public is invited to a program at 11 a.m. Saturday as Russellville Baseball honors the memory of the late Kelly Russell, who died after being injured in warmups for the Panthers' regional baseball game in 1974. The 2nd annual Kelly Russell Classic began Friday night and will continue Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader and fund-raising for the Kelly Russell Scholarships. The program will be held in the middle school gym, which is adjacent to Kelly Russell Field. See Jean Reynolds' April Guest Article for more information.

RMS fall softball open workout scheduled

From Coach Ryan Davenport: "There will be an open workout on Monday in the indoor facility at RHS for any girls interested in playing middle softball next year. It will be from 5-7 p.m. This is for girls currently in 4th through 7th grade. If it rains we'll have to cancel because the high school teams will be using the facility."

Megan Scarbrough named to international

business honor society at Western Kentucky

The WKU chapter of the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society in business inducted 56 students, faculty and business professionals during its annual ceremony on April 15. Among them was Megan Renee Scarbrough, an accounting major from Auburn. Students ranking in the top 10 percent of the baccalaureate and top 20 percent of graduate programs at schools accredited by AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) are eligible for this invitation.

Babe Ruth sign-ups end soon

It's Babe Ruth baseball sign-up time. Anyone wanting to play ages 13 to 15 should contact Artis Stratton at 270-847-1453 or Ethan Meguiar at 270-221-5480. The fee is $55. Sign-ups will end on Monday. There will be no sign-up at Russellville Parks and Rec.

Lt. Gov. Luallen to announce infrastructure

grant for Adairville today at city park

During an announcement/ceremony scheduled at Adairville City Park at 1 p.m. today, Lt. Gov. Crit Luallen and Commissioner Tony Wilder of the Department for Local Government will announce the awarding of a major community development grant to the city of Adairville. Also scheduled to speak are Mayor Donna Blake, Rep. Martha Jane King and U.S, Department of Agriculture Rural Development Community Program Specialist Anthony Hollinsworth. The grant is expected to be for over a half million dollars to use on water and sewer improvements to the South Logan city. The public is encouraged to attend.

RHS diamond games postponed

From Russellville High School Athletic Director Calvin Head: "The RHS baseball game that was scheduled for tonight vs. Todd County has been canceled and moved to tomorrow night (Wednesday). With this being a district game we want to try to get it in this week. The game will start at 5:00 at Kelly Russell Field with the Varsity team playing first. The JV game will follow the varstiy game. The softball game today has been canceled. They have moved the game to tomorrow (Wednesday) night. This is also a district game that is scheduled to be played at Franklin-Simpson. Game times will be the same, 5:30 for varsity with JV to follow.

SKYCTC offering job fair April 22

Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College is hosting an area-wide job fair on Wednesday, April 22 from 11 a.m. -2 p.m. at the College’s Main Campus on Loop Drive in Bowling Green. EPB customers to be without power

for four hours Saturday morning

The Russellville Electric Plant Board has announced a total power outage that will take place on Saturday, April 11 from midnight until 4 a.m. TVA has notified the EPB that they will be changing out faulty arresters that will result in a loss of power to its customers. This outage will affect all electric power customers, as well as fiber service customers who live within the REPB service area. If you have any questions regarding the planned outage, please call the office at 270-726-2466.

Friends of Kelley Ashby Paul

After Sen. Rand Paul of Bowling Green officially announced his candidacy for president of the United States Monday, the Bowling Green Daily News carried a feature article on his wife, Russellville High School graduate Kelley Ashby Paul, which reporter Alyssa Harvey had been working on for several weeks. In it, fellow RHS graduates Lally Riley McLean, Kelley Smith Steenbergen, Shelly Smith Dillard & Alison Baker are quoted extensively, along with retired educator Bobbie Jean Burnett. Kelley Paul is the daughter of Lewisburg native Hilton Ashby and his wife Lillian Ashby, who have lived in Russellville since the potential First Lady was in the fifth grade. The newspaper is available this morning and online.

Logan-Central game moved home

The Logan County Cougars' baseball team is still scheduled to play Warren Central Tuesday, but Assistant Coach Adam Decker has announced that the site has been moved to LCHS. The JV game will begin at 3 p.m. with the varsity game to follow. Decker says games with Hopkinsville, Warren East and Barren County that were postponed because of weather have been canceled.

Airport board to discuss extension

of runway with engineers

The Russellville-Logan County Airport Board will hold a called business meeting with the airport’s engineer, Garver, on Monday, April 6 at 5:30 p.m. in the conference room at the airport. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss details of a proposed contract with Garver engineers for design of a runway extension.

Author, veteran to speak at library

Logan County Public Library has an author scheduled to speak on April 11, from 10 a.m. until noon. Michael Freeland from Hopkinsville has written four books to date, with his latest being "Homeplace," a book of poetry. He is also a WWII veteran. Tracy Houchens, adult programming director for the library, says. "Mr. Freeland will be speaking about his new book and also about his WWII experiences."
