BGH edges Cougars in 12 innings
|
|
The end of an outstanding season was prolonged for the Logan County Cougars Wednesday night. After two days of rainouts and five extra innings of baseball, Coach Ethan Meguiar's team fell 3-2 to Bowling Green at WKU. Caleb Bruner & Matt Harper pitched an excellent game for Logan, but Coach Dan Mosier's Purples loaded the bases in the bottom of the 12th and Ethan Wilson beat the throw home on a fielder's choice to end the game.

|
|
A lead front page story in the Wednesday Bowling Green Daily News describes the celebration at Auburn School Tuesday in honor of the school’s being named a Kentucky Middle School to Watch. Pictured are Principal David Ward, Superintendent Kevin Hub, Tommy Floyd of the Kentucky Department of Education,& students Crandall Barrow & Emily Green. Among students mentioned by name by reporter Alyssa Harvey are Caden McKinnis, Kile Todd & Green. Harvey quotes Fran Saylers, executive director of the Kentucky Middle School Association, as saying, “There’s a good feeling in the school. It makes you feel entirely different.”

R'ville blood drive Monday

The Russellville Community Blood Drive will be Monday, June 1 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The hours are noon.- 6 p.m. The goal for the blood drive has been raised by about 20 units due to the shortage of blood. Louise Parker says, "Please come out and give the gift of life. Fundraiser for Humane Society to be conducted Friday by FSNB
|
|
Misty Bromm and John Brett Reynolds are leading a First Southern National Bank fund raiser for the Logan County Humane Society/ Shelter this Friday at the former location of FSNB in the Bethel Shopping Center before the bank moved into its nearby larger location. A yard sale will start at 8 a.m. Lunch will follow, beginning at 10:45 a.m. (hot dogs, chips, drink) for $5 All proceeds will go to the Humane Society. Donation buckets are set up this week at the new bank if people want to make a donation to the cause.

Regional baseball tourney postponed
|
|
All 4th Region Tournament baseball games were postponed in Bowling Green Monday, including Logan County's matchup with Bowling Green High. The first two softball games were also postponed, but South Warren shut out Allen County-Scottsville 10-0 in the third scheduled game. The Russellville Lady Panthers were to play the next game against Cumberland County.

R'ville Memorial Day program set

The Russellville Memorial Day Program will be held on Carrico Square Monday, beginning at 10 a.m. Darlene Gooch of Main Street Russellville says Lt. Col. Scott Halter will speak and Hannah Lawrence will sing the National Anthem. Also on the program will be Mayor Mark Stratton, Rep. Martha Jane King & Judge/Executive Logan Chick, and the Fort Campbell Color Guard will also participate. In case of rain, the ceremony will move inside the 4th Street Theater.

Dockins’ Faulkner team advances,
Harper’s Lindsey-Wilson eliminated
|
|
Lindsey Wilson College was eliminated from the Avista NAIA World Series in Idaho Saturday after losing two close, low-scoring games. Ryan Harper of Logan County went hitless in three at bats in a 3-1 loss to Vanguard of California on Friday. Then on Saturday, he only batted once in a 2-0 loss to Tabor of Kansas and didn’t get a hit. Harper went into the World Series hitting .400. Meanwhile Faulkner University of Alabama—the number two seed—beat Vanguard 4-1. Harper’s Cougars teammate, John Logan Dockins, is a member of that team but did not play in the win. Top-seeded Oklahoma Baptist lost to Tabor in the second round. Faulkner is scheduled to meet third-seeded Embry-Riddle of Kansas Monday afternoon in a winners’ bracket semifinal.

Cougars draw BGH at region
|
|
The Logan County Cougars have their work cut out for them to start the Fourth Region baseball tournament. They play 14th District champion Bowling Green (29-6) at 7 p.m. Monday at WKU's Nick Denes Field. The Purples have the region's best record; Coach Ethan Meguiar’s Cougars are fourth at 24-10. BGH won 2-1 when they played April 24. The Cougars have good pitching, ranking second in the region in fewest runs allowed, but they are having trouble scoring runs, including managing just one run in the 13th District Tournament. They are eighth in the region in scoring. The Cougars have scored one or no runs in 10 games, and three or under runs in 19 games. The winner of this game will face either Barren County (19-16) or Metcalfe County (8-17) on Tuesday.

RHS softball draws Cumberland
|
|
The Russellville Lady Panthers got the best draw available to them in the Fourth Region Softball Tournament, which begins Memorial Day. Coach Brandy Trimble's team (11-16) will face 16th District champion Cumberland County at 7 p.m. Monday at the WKU Softball Field. Even though Cumberland has an 18-12 record, the other two teams which RHS could have drawn, Warren East (26-8) and Allen County-Scottsville (20-11), have better worksheets. If RHS wins, the Lady Panthers will go against the AC-S vs. South Warren winner Tuesday.

Crawford resigns as softball coach
|
|
From Logan County softball coach Michael Crawford: "I have resigned as head coach. I am resigning for personal reasons and to focus on school and my own family. I wish the girls and the team the best of luck." In his four years as coach, the Lady Cougars had a record of 37-91, including 12-18 in the 13th District and 6-10 against other regional teams. His first team in 2012 won its tournament opener, but Logan is 0-5 in postseason play since then. Crawford is also a member of the football coaching staff.

Westerfield wins GOP primary
|
|
Whitney Westerfield, who represents Logan County in the Kentucky Senate, is the Republican nominee for Attorney General following Tuesday's primary election. He won over Michael Holder and will face Democrat Andy Beshear in the General Election. His opponent is the son of Gov. Steve Beshear. Another area nominee is Jean-Marie Lawson Spann, who grew up in the family business at Hartland Equipment in Bowling Green. She will oppose Republican nominee Rick Nelson for Commissioner of Agriculture. Another WKU graduate, Commissioner of Agriculture James Comer of Monroe County, came up seven dozen votes short of Matt Bevin for the GOP nomination for governor, but vote totals are being checked. Bevin or Comer will face current Attorney General Jack Conway, who was virtually unopposed for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

F-S ends LCHS string of titles
|
|
Logan County's four-year stranglehold on the 13th District Baseball crown came to an end Thursday night as Coach Ethan Meguiar’s Cougars fell 4-0 to visiting Franklin-Simpson in the 13th District championship game. The teams had split on the season. Both will advance to next week's regional tournament.

F-S edges Lady Panthers 4-3;
baseball finals postponed
|
|
The continued improvement of the Russellville Lady Panthers was evident in the district championship softball game Wednesday, but Coach Brandy Trimble's team came up a run short. Coach Matthew Wilhite's Franklin-Simpson team won 4-3 at LCHS. The Lady Cats had won the first two meetings 4-0 and 5-2. WRUS reports that the baseball champion-ship game between defending champ Logan County and F-S was postponed because of rain.

Bruner, Cougars edge Procter, RHS
|
|
The Russellville Panthers and Jacob Procter showed what a difference team improvement and a pitcher on top of his game can make. After losing the first two Clashes of the Cats by a combined score of 30-1, Coach Blake Crabtree's Panthers rode the pitching of the previously injured Procter to the edge of victory in the 13th District Baseball Tournament Monday. The Cougars were a little better, though, relying on the pitching of Caleb Bruner, one of the best pitchers in LCHS history, for a 1-0 win on a two-hitter. Michael Riley drove in Matt Harper with the game's only run in the third inning. Coach Ethan Meguiar's Cougars will be in familiar territory tonight at 6, playing Franklin-Simpson for the championship at LCHS.

Lady Panthers edge Lady Cougars
2-1 in district softball opener
|
|
Adding another milestone to their remarkable season, Coach Brandy Trimble's Russellville Lady Panthers eliminated Logan County 2-1 in the opening game of the 13th District Softball Tournament at LCHS. Tara Gilbert pitched a 2-hit, no-walk, one-run game. Malynn Ray & Rachel Fisher scored the RHS runs. Seventh grader Brea Croslin scored the lone Logan run. Meagan Ferguson pitched well for Logan, as both runs scored on errors. Watch The LoJo for more details.

Hornets advance to CBA semis
|
|
In a tough quarterfinals game Sunday afternoon, the Bowling Green Hornets outscored Springfield by 15 points in the fourth quarter to rally past the Sentinels and win 105-94. The win puts Bowling Green into the Central Basketball Association semifinals against arch-rival Middle Tennessee Storm on Saturday, May 30 in Fort Wayne, Ind. A week earlier, Coach Nathan Thompson’s Hornets won by a league-record 62 points (135-73) against Peoria. It was the fourth straight Saturday they had won home games at Logan County High School for a CBA-record eighth straight home win, dating back to last year when they were playing at Russellville’s Jim Young Gymnasium. Owner Waseem Moorad’s Hornets are the number two seed in the tournament.

RHS tracksters qualify for state
|
|
Eight members of the Russellville High School track teams have qualified for the state Class 1A track meet this weekend, according to Athletic Director Calvin Head. They include eighth grader Sariana Allen in the 100 and the 200 meter dashes, Tacorian ‘CoCo’ Darden in the 100, 200 and 4x100 and 4x200 relays; Josh Bigbee in the 100 and the relays; Carl Jones in the shot put and the relays; Johnny Drumgole in the triple jump and the relays; Truston Clayton in the shot put; and Deshawn Mason & Deante Dowlen in the relays. Dennis Sydnor & Matt Tipton are the coaches.

Faulkner, Dockins beat CU,
reach NAIA World Series

|
Faulkner University beat Campbellsville University 5-3 in baseball Thursday in the championship game of the Montgomery Region. Coach Patrick McCarthy's Eagles advance to the Avista-NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho later this month. Former Logan County Cougar John Logan Dockins is a member of the team.

Dockins part of Faulkner team
which beat Campbellsville Wednesday
|
|
The Faulkner University Eagles beat Campbellsville 3-1 Wednesday to reach the finals of the NAIA regional baseball tournament being played in Montgomery, Ala. where Faulkner is located. John Logan Dockins is a member of the Faulkner team, which is 47-13, Southern States Athletic Conference champion, and one win away from reaching the Avista-NAIA World Series for the third straight year. Dockins, who graduated from Faulkner earlier this month, has been named to the All-Conference Academic team for the second straight year. The Logan County High School graduate will serve as a intern youth minister at Crittenden Drive Church of Christ for the second straight summer and then return to Faulkner to work on a masters degree. He is the son of Harris and Sharon Dockins.

Cat Clashes featured in both
district tourneys next week at LCHS
|
|
In both the 13th District softball and baseball tournaments next week at LCHS, Cat Clashes will be staged. The Russellville and Logan County softball teams will play at 5:30 Monday with Franklin-Simpson and Todd Central to follow. On the adjacent field, the F-S and Todd baseball teams will play the first game with the Cat Clash to follow. Tournament Manager Hugh McReynolds says the order of play is reversed so the fans of each school can go to both games without conflict. One $5 ticket will work for both tournaments. Championship games will be played Tuesday with the softball to start at 5:30 and baseball at 6.

Funeral services planned for
dads of Ben and Sandra Brown
|
|
One of Logan County's best-known couples, PVA Ben Brown and his wife, retired educator Sandra Brown, have lost their fathers within four days of each other. Former tobacco warehouse owner and Logan County Election Commissioner Tommy Brown died Friday, and retired Carpenter Co. engineer Al Eggleston died Monday. Funeral services will be held soon. Watch for their obituaries on The LoJo tonight, since both are being arranged by Summers, Kirby & Sanders Funeral Home, which announces its obituaries here.

Strawberry Festival starts today

The annual Adairville Strawberry Festival starts today. A car, truck and tractor will begin at 1 p.m. on the square with a ham, bean and cornbread dinner plus strawberry shortcake to begin at 5:30 with an auction at 7, all at Costellow's Cafe on the square. The festival lasts a week with the next events Tuesday evening at Adairville Elementary School.

TVA honors Russellville EPB
|
|
Russellville Electric Plant Board (EPB) has received special recognition from TVA for helping the agency exceed energy efficiency and demand response goals for the seventh straight year. “Russellville EPB provides the staffing, promotion and resources to ensure that customers are aware of and can participate in energy efficiency measures to save on electric bills,” said Cindy Herron, director of EnergyRight Solutions for TVA. Russellville EPB ranked fourth across the TVA territory in Total Program, Savings to Sales with over 1.4 million kWh of saving.

Tisdale-Oakley team advances
in regional tennis action
|
|
The doubles tennis team from Russellville High School of Will Oakley and Cameron Tisdale, which went undefeated in regional play this year, has advanced to the third round of the regional tournament in Bowling Green. They will play this afternoon with a berth in the state tournament on the line. Travis McDaniel also won a regional match in singles, and Sam Cosmer & Sam Cundiff played for the Panthers, who are coached by Calvin & Tracy Naylor. Today’s match is at 4 p.m.

Hornets win 3rd straight at LCHS
|
|
The Bowling Green Hornets got a much-needed defensive deflection in the closing seconds to preserve a 91-90 over the Fort Wayne Flite. Coach Nathan Thompson’s Hornets had led at every stop in the home game. Torrez Hampton put together a huge rebounding game. The Hornets, who have won three straight Saturday nights at Logan County High School, moved into second place in the Central Basketball Association. The Hornets are now 4-2 while the team from northern Indiana team is 4-3. Bowling Green will play its final regular season home game next Saturday, also at LCHS.
