The Russellville Urban Gardening Project Inc. (RUGP is an urban agricultural program) has received a grant from the federal agency National Resources Conservation Service to build a seasonal high tunnel on the corner of Fifth and Caldwell.

The Grow Appalachia Project at Berea College will be installing the high tunnels on Monday, Oct. 26, and Tuesday, Oct. 27, starting at 9 a.m. each day.

RUGP is dedicated to community gardening for engagement within Russellville and surrounding areas. RUGP partners with the city of Russellville, Logan County Extension 4-H, Kentucky State University Cooperative Extension, New Visions Community Church and Stevenson Elementary School. Children utilize the garden to learn about careers in agriculture.  The students plant veggies, help maintain the garden, and go on educational field trips.  

A high tunnel or hoop house (which it is often referred to) is a low-cost version of a standard greenhouse, which is freestanding gutter-connected covered structure, without heating or electrical power. The high tunnel uses passive ventilation for air exchange and cooling, and an irrigation system for crop production. Consequently, the farmers have much more control of the crops they produce.
