F-S beats Panthers 34-12
|
|
Franklin-Simpson sealed a home playoff game next week by beating the visiting Russellville Panthers 34-12 Friday. The Wildcats improved to 6-4 while RHS fell to 8-2. Russellville's scores came on touchdown passes from reserve quarterback Jacob Naylor to Josh Bigbee & Jason Mitchell. The Panthers entertain Fort Knox next week while the Wildcats will play host to Madisonville-North Hopkins.

Regional cross country meet
for 3 classes to be held at LCHS
|
|
Talented runners--both boys and girls--from three classes will engulf the cross country track at Logan County High School Saturday for the Region 2 meet. Berths at state are at stake. Class 3A will run at 9 a.m., Class 1A at 10:40 and Class 2A at 1 p.m. LCHS Athletic Director Greg Howard and cross country coach Joe Dan Laster will oversee the meet.

Greenwood edges Logan in 5 sets
|
|
By the narrowest of margins, the Logan County Lady Cougars were eliminated from the Fourth Region Volleyball Tournament Tuesday at Monroe County. Coach Steven Lyne's team won the first two sets over Greenwood but then lost the last three. The score of the final set was 15-12. The Lady Cougars finished the 2015 season with a 29-9 record.

East Logan Water to open
Russellville office Wednesday
|
|
East Logan Water District's office is closed today as the utility moves from Auburn to its new headquarters at 333 Franklin Street in Russellville near the entrance to Hampton Park. Charles Kelley and Jana Hanks, after decades of service, are no longer in that role. Linda Alexander is the new manager. The Russellville office will open Wednesday.

Groundbreaking Wednesday
for expansion of Logan Aluminum

Logan Aluminum will hold a groundbreaking in conjunction with Tri-Arrows Aluminum as construction begins on a major expansion of Logan Aluminum Wednesday at 1 p.m. The expansion is expected to house the new rolling operation to manufacture automobile body parts.

Logan to meet Greenwood in
yet another volleyball regional
|
|
The two most dominant volleyball programs in the Fourth Region over the last 13 years will clash in an opening-round match of the Fourth Region Tournament Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Logan County Lady Cougars (29-8) will go against the Greenwood Lady Gators (24-13) in the second night of action. These two schools met in nearly every regional final for over a decade. They have played each other three times this season. Coach Jason Reels’ Lady Gators won the first two confrontations, but Coach Steven Lyne’s Lady Cougars beat both Greenwood and defending regional champion South Warren on the way to the championship of a major tournament on the season’s final weekend. Russell County and Allen County-Scottsville are in the bracket with Logan and GHS. Monroe County and South Warren were winners Monday.

Bruner starts intrasquad game for WKU
|
|
Former Logan County High baseball star Caleb Brunerwas the starting pitcher for the Black team in Game 3 of the Fall World Series, which is a series of intramural games involving members of the Western Kentucky University baseball team. He pitched three scoreless innings and his team led 3-0 going into the fourth inning, but the Red team hit him and relieverJared Wilson in the fourth. The Red team won the game 8-3. Bruner was Kentucky High School Baseball Player of the Year this spring.

Panthers rush to district title
|
|
The Russellville Panthers rushed for 418 yards on the way to a hard-fought 46-21 win at Crittenden County Friday. As a result, Coach John Myers’ team (8-1) won the Region I, District 1, Class 1A championship. Bryson Thomas carried the ball 16 times for 124 yards, two touchdowns and a 2-point conversion. Josh Bigbee added 115 yards on 18 carries, M.J. Jones needed only six touches to gain 84 yards, and Johnny Drumgole picked up 50 yards on just six carries. He scored on his first carry of the night. Paul Jones recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass. Jason Mitchell & Damon Hales both returned kickoffs for touchdowns. Quarterback Nick Castiller passed for 256 yards, including nine receptions by Tyler Coleman for 153 yards and two touchdowns to lead Crittenden County (6-2).

Saturday is last day to use
vouchers at Farmers' Market
|
|
This Saturday morning is the final time for people with 2015 Senior or WIC vouchers to spend them on fruits and vegetables at the Logan County Farmers' Market. The vouchers expire Oct. 25 and can only be used at a farmers' market. The Logan market, which is held twice a week at the pavillion behind the Extension Office. Hours are 7:30-noon. Ample produce is still available for purchase.

Marching Cougars win Grayson
show, head to regional

The LCHS Marching Cougars traveled to Grayson County last Saturday and performed their show “A Day at the Derby”. The show is under the direction of David Dayton and Mandy Beasley. The color guard and the percussion won first place in their 4A Class. The Marching Cougars came in first place in their 4A Class. Publicity Chair Carol Kimmel says, "The students were excited to see that their hard work is paying off in competition. They want to keep the momentum of winning going as they go to KMEA Regionals in Hopkinsville this Saturday."

Retired teachers collect items
for students to allow them to learn

From retired educator Sue Wood: As retired educators in Logan County, teachers know that students are best ready to learn when they have the basic tools they need. The Russellville/Logan County Retired Teachers Association (RLCRTA) is committed to providing food to fight hunger in Logan County, school supplies for school students, essential clothing for children in need, and toys at Christmas. Working with the Family Resource Centers, teachers have collected over 80 bags of nonperishable food items for the summer backpack program, over 40 bags of school supplies, over 40 items of clothing, and over 100 toys at Christmas. Retired teachers take great pleasure in making life a little better for children in need.

The Logan County Lady Cougar Volleyball team kept its streaks alive and thriving Tuesday by winning the program's 13th straight 13th District championship. The team, coached by Steven Lyne, Rob Imlay, James Imlay and Hannah Hudnall, has won 96 straight district matches as well. The Lady Cougars beat Russellville 3-0 in the opening round and Todd Central 3-0 in the finals. The wins ran Logan's total to 29 this season.

Section of Nashville Road being resurfaced
|
|
The state highway department is working on U.S. 431, Nashville Road, from KY 2371 (MP 7.4) to south of Country Club BLVD (MP 11.75)- Crews will begin resurfacing operations. Portions of this 4.5 mile stretch of roadway will have a one-lane road controlled by flaggers. Trucks will be entering and exiting the highway, so motorists should use caution while traveling through this work zone.

Logan County soccer teams
to open regional play Monday
|
|
Logan County’s soccer teams will open regional play against challenging competition, both on Monday. Coach Dan Duncan’s 13th District champions (9-8-3) will play 15th District runner-up Barren County (12-6) at 5:30 p.m. at Glasgow. They didn’t play each other in the regular season. Coach David Embry’s Trojanettes have the third most wins in the region but lost 5-0 to Glasgow in the district finals. The winner will play 14th District champ Bowling Green (16-2-2) at 7:30 Tuesday. The finals will be at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Coach Eric Evans’ Cougars (13-7-2) will take on 14th District runner-up South Warren (11-6-4) at 7:30 Monday at Franklin-Simpson. Logan did not play a 14th District team during the regular season. The winner will face 15th District champion Glasgow (17-3) at 5:30 Tuesday. The finals will be played at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Favored going into the tournament, the Logan County Lady Cougars beat visiting Todd Central 3-0 Thursday for the championship of the 13th District Soccer Tournament. Coach Dan Duncan's team had qualified for region based on their regular season play, but they lived up to expectations. Todd had eliminated Franklin-Simpson 8-1 to reach the finals. Named All-District based on season play were Lady Cougars Hanna Shelton, Lauren Burnett, Logan Williamson & Emma Cartas.

Cougars reach district soccer finals
|
|
The Logan County Cougars beat Todd Central 5-3 Tuesday in the 13th District Tournament at LCHS. This moves them into Thursday’s finals and next week’s regional tournament. Sedale Shannon scored two goals for the Cougars with Logan Houchens, Josh McKinney and Erik Williams adding one each. Picking up assists were Coby Foster, Lorenzo Garcia, Ashton Ross and Garrett Wilhelm. Kenny Cornist was the winning goalkeeper. Coach Eric Evans’ team will play Franklin-Simpson, which eliminated RHS 12-0. The Lady Cougars will also play in Thursday’s championship match after earning the top seed from regular season play.

District soccer at LCHS this week

|
The 13th District soccer tournaments will be held at Logan County High School this week with all matches at night. Monday, Coach Jonathan White’s Russellville Panthers will face top-seeded Franklin-Simpson at 7:30. Tuesday at 6, Coach Eric Evans’ second-seeded Cougars will play Todd Central. Thursday at 6, the girls championship game will be held. Coach Dan Duncan’s Lady Cougars, who are top-seeded and have an automatic berth in the region because it’s a three-team district, will go against Monday’s Todd vs. F-S survivor. The boys finals will be held Thursday at 7:30.

Ryan Kemp dies in auto crash
|
|
Ryan Kemp, a 2003 graduate of Logan County High School, died in an automobile accident in Danville Friday afternoon. According to Danville Police and WLEX-TV, Kemp’s SUV drifted into oncoming traffic and struck a pickup truck driven by Lincoln County minister Kevin Jones. Kemp’s GMC Acadia burst into flames, and he died at the scene. The WLEX report said Jones, 26, was taken to a hospital but that his condition was unknown. Ryan Kemp, 30, is the son of retired Logan County Schools Superintendent Marshall Kemp and the late Olmstead teacher Cynthia Mason Kemp. A graduate of WKU, Ryan Kemp, 30, had suffered with diabetes and its effects for many years.

RMS wins football playoff opener,

The Russellville Middle School 7th grade football hosted the first round of the KYMSA Football playoffs this past Saturday at Rhea Stadium. They defeated South Warren Middle School 22-14 to advance to the second round. They will play this Saturday vs. Bowling Green Middle School. The game will be played at Bowling Green HS and kick-off is scheduled for 6:30.

Logan teams having super seasons
|
|
Four Logan County teams are enjoying super seasons. As always, the Lady Cougar volleyball team is a regional contender. According to the KHSAA Scoreboard, Coach Steven Lyne’s squad is 19-6 overall, 9-3 in the region, and a perfect 6-0 in the district. Going into the district tournament, the Lady Cougars are on a 94-match winning streak against district opponents. Coach Eric Evans’ Cougar soccer team is tied for the third most wins in the Fourth Region with a 12-3-2 record going into the final three regular season matches. Two of those losses are to district rival Franklin-Simpson, which is 13-1 overall. Coach Dan Duncan’s Lady Cougar soccer team has won four of its last five meetings, tying the other. The team is 8-6-3 overall and has already clinched the top seed in the district by sweeping matches against Todd Central and winless Franklin-Simpson. Coach Joe Dan Laster’s Cougar cross country team finished second in the Gatorland meet last weekend and third in their home meet Saturday.

RHS Academic Team off to good start
|
|
The Russellville High School Academic Team had a successful first meet of the season against Edmonson County and Christian County. Both the varsity and junior varsity teams won their quick recall matches against Christian County, and the varsity team narrowly lost to Edmonson County in overtime. Several students placed in the top ten in league standings (which takes into consideration not only the results of the local meet, but scores from all 15 schools that make up the Pennyrile Academic Association). Students achieving top ten status include: Phillip Wilkerson (#1 in JV science),Anna Shoulders (#7 in JV science), Will Mullen (#9 in JV arts & humanities),Bryce Bollenbecker (#9 in JV language arts), and Kendra Farlee (#8 in varsity language arts).

Thunder on the Square Sunday

Cruisin’ for A Cure’s Thunder on the Square will be held in Russellville Sunday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. as part of the Logan County Tobacco & Heritage Festival. All types of vehicles are welcome. There is no entry fees but donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation are welcome. A variety of vendors will on site, and cash prizes and drawings are planned. Dr. Kerr returns home
|
|
Russellville dentist Dr. Paul Kerr returned home Wednesday after spending a month at TriStar Skyline Medical Center following a motorcycle accident Aug. 28. Jim Riley announced his return home during services at Crittenden Drive Church of Christ Wednesday night but said the family is still requesting no visitors as he recuperates from three surgeries.
