Each month, members of the Logan County Board of Education receive reports from the seven schools about Good News that has affected their school recently. The following is the report from November.
Adairville:
At the beginning of November, the Rotary Club visited our 3rd grade students and donated a student dictionary to every 3rd grade student.
Adairville is preparing to honor this month the 155 3rd-8th grade students who achieved a score of Distinguished or Proficient on the KPREP test from last year. Of these 155, thirteen students scored Distinguished across the board while 40 more students scored all Distinguished and Proficient in all areas tested.
On November 5, K-5 students enjoyed a presentation by FOODPLAY, which focused on developing healthy eating habits and exercising.
Auburn:
Auburn School had a hugely successful Tiger Family Fun Night on Friday, Nov. 6. We are very appreciative of all the PTO members, community partners, local businesses, parents, students, and staff who helped to make this event such an enjoyable one for all who attended.
WKU students have been collaborating with Auburn School teachers in multiple ways this month. We have had several block students coming to observe in our classrooms from K to 8th grade.
Ms. Beth Stinson, sixth grade science teacher, hosted two nutrition students for an interactive science lesson on health eating and physical activity.
K-5 students also learned about healthy eating with the Logan County Schools Food Service presented FoodPlay on Nov. 5, a dramatic presentation teaching students about making healthy eating choices.
Auburn School with the FRYSC hosted its first monthly Volunteer Day on Wednesday, Nov 11.
Chandlers:
Nearly 80 percent of Chandlers students had a parent in attendance for our fall Student-Led Conferences in October.
Bonnie Spears joined us in October as our new Assistant Principal and is already off to a great start.
Over 50 5th - 8th grade band students were able to attend a performance by the Nashville Symphony.
Chandlers School recently received a check for $1,000 from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). These funds are the result of a partnership between TVA and local schools to increase student interest in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Lewisburg:
Lewisburg School has welcomed 15 families of children ages 0-4 for our first two sessions of Born Learning Academy. Each family enjoyed a meal, a Born Learning Academy class and parent and child activities. This Academy is to help parents better understand the importance of early learning and help students be more prepared for Kindergarten.
The Lewisburg 8th grade traveled to Land Between the lakes and Murray State University for an educational overnight trip. The students toured Murray’s Campus, participated in team building activities at Brandon Springs and visited The Homeplace an 1850s working farm.
Red Ribbon Week was hosted by the Guidance Office and the Family Resource Youth Service Center, faculty and students participated in the theme week focused on educating our students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
Olmstead:
Over 100 4th and 5th grade students, teachers, and parents attended a private screening of the movie Goosebumps in Clarksville on Friday, Oct. 16. The film is an adaptation of the beloved children's book series, Goosebumps, by author R. L. Stine. Students were invited to attend the movie after reading and successfully passing the Accelerated Reader testing on one of Stine's books.
Chief Larry Jones and Marty Marshall from Auburn and Logan County Deputy Sheriff Eric Evans gave a Stranger Danger presentation to preschoolers at Olmstead on Oct. 20. The “Safety Pup” canine helped the students answer questions.
To help raise awareness for Autism, and in honor of third grader Blake Hood, a staff fundraiser luncheon was held on Oct. 22. Teacher Catherine Taylor cooked a meal for teachers who had ordered in advance. Proceeds of $300 went to Team Blake. Several teachers and Principal Bonnie Watson participated in the Walk held at Centennial Park in Nashville on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Olmstead administrators host a breakfast with their bus drivers the last Monday of each month. Drivers were treated to breakfast on Oct. 26, as they discussed celebrations and concerns, as well as strategies for managing students on the bus.
On Oct. 30, preschoolers dressed in costume and trick-or-treated through the main office, the ISI room, computer lab, lunchroom, and library, where staff members stood to hand out treats.
LCHS:
The LCHS Music Department has received a grant from BRADD to use SKYPAC in Bowling Green as a performance venue at no charge during this school year. We are excited to announce that our LCHS Winter Concert 2015 will be held at SKYPAC. This concert will take place on Thursday, Dec. 17, and will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature the LCHS Band, Choir, and Jazz Band. This event is free and open to the public.
*Cougar Marching Band - Won 1st place in Class 4A, Best Percussion in Class 4A, and Best Color Guard in Class 4A in the Grayson County Marching Contest and competed in Regional Competition in Hopkinsville on Oct. 24.
*Volleyball team – The girls won their 13th straight district championship to advance to the regional tournament.
*Academic Team – Won three out of four matches against Barren County and Warren Central
*Lady Cougar Soccer – District Champs… advanced to regional tournament
*Boys Cougar Soccer – District Runner-up…. advanced to regional tournament
*Cross County - Advanced to State - Gage Cousineau and Thomas Lyne competed in state meet – improved their PR during the race.
*Competitive Cheer earned Regional Runner-up in the Small Squad Division
Renaissance Rally was held Nov. 5 – celebrated successes of students with music, prizes and recognitions
RATC:
Russellville ATC will have 17 students accompanied by twp teacher advisers from HOSA and FBLA participating in the Titans Learning Lab Leadership Day at Nissan Stadium where they will be touring the stadium, Titans Locker rooms, andbe introduced to different types of jobs in professional sports.
Sam Cosner, Health Sciences student, has been chosen to represent RATC as the Rotary Student of the Month for November.
DISTRICTWIDE:
The Russellville Rotary Club provided 246 new coats to family resource centers for distribution to students in need.
